Leonardo da Vinci
INTRO/ATTENTION GETTER GOES HERE:
THESIS/PREVIEW: In order to appreciate the artistry and legacy of Leonardo da Vinci, it is
vital to brush over his childhood, sculpt out his early career, view his important works and explore his
legacy of discoveries and ideas of nature and science.
Personal LifeLeonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, the illegitimate son of Piero da Vinci
(“Leonardo da Vinci.” DISCovering Biography) and a peasant girl, Caterina. His father took custody
of da Vinci shortly after his birth (“Leonardo da Vinci Renaissance Man.”) raising him first in Vinci
and then in Florence (“Leonardo da Vinci.” DISCovering Biography). Meanwhile, his mother married
someone else and moved to a nearby town. “They kept on having kids, although not with each other,
and they eventually supplied him with a total of 17 half sisters and brothers” (“Leonardo da Vinci
Renaissance Man.”). da Vinci never married, although when he died in Aboise, France on May 2,
1519, Francesco Melzi, his assistant and rumored lover, become the primary heir and executor of da
Vinci’s estate (“Leonardo da Vinci” Biography.com).
Career
da Vinci began his work as an artist as a young age. Apprenticed at 14 to the artist Verrocchio,
da Vinci spent the next six years learning a variety of “technical skills, including metalworking, leather

arts, carpentry, drawing and sculpting”. He earned his master artist designation by the age of 20 in the
Guild of Saint Luke (“Leonardo da Vinci” Biography.com). Leonardo remained in the Verrocchio
studio until 1477 when he opened his own workshop. (“Leonardo da Vinci Renaissance Man.”).
Other than a few sketches in his notebooks, little of Leonardo's work at this early period little survives,
other than some sketches in his notebooks. (“Leonardo da Vinci.” DISCovering Biography).
Career Notable Works Some paintings are recongnizable world wide
and require no introduction. Such is the case with da Vinci’s portrait
Mona Lisa – Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del
Giocondo, more simply known as Mona Lisa.
