TVET traineeship helps jump start Belle’s career

I was looking for a challenge outside of the normal school

syllabus.

Growing up in the country, Belle Meyer was in Year 10 when she first heard about TVET school based traineeships. She jumped at the chance to combine her interest in learning a trade with finishing school.

On completing the High School Certificate, Belle wasn’t sure that she wanted to continue her senior school studies, so she worked with her career adviser to find some study options that would allow her to continue high school while learning real-life skills.

Belle found a TVET traineeship program offered by TAFE in association with Toyota Lexus. The program gave her the opportunity to complete her Higher School Certificate and also a Certificate II in Light Automotive Servicing.

Belle said, “I decided to start this course because I was interested in learning about engine construction but also because I was looking for a challenge outside of the normal school syllabus.

The TVET course gave me a great practical start in understanding engine construction and concepts. It also gave me the opportunity to develop a strong personality and the confidence to further my education and career path by starting an automotive apprenticeship with Toyota Lexus.”

Belle is currently studying the Certificate III in Automotive Technology course at St George College while undertaking her apprenticeship with Toyota Lexus.

“Studying at TAFE has not only made me tool-smart but has prepared me for the real-life working environment. The teachers have given me the resources and skills needed to undertake mechanical repairs confidently, while arming me with the knowledge on how to communicate with customers in a professional environment. They have encouraged me to continue every step of the way.”

Flying from Adelaide to Sydney to attend classes in watchmaking has paid off for graduate Eliza Camac, who won the 2012 Apprentice of the Year category at the South Australian Training Awards.Eliza came to watchmaking by chance after taking a job at a local watchmakers store during her university gap year. She soon found the work fascinating and decided to swap her university plans for an apprenticeship, with the hitch being that Ultimo College was the only education provider in Australia to offer the watchmaking course!

Eliza flew to Sydney 30 times over three years to complete her Certificate III in Watchmaking. She topped her class in 2010 and 2011 and also picked up a Sydney Institute Student Excellence Award for her outstanding achievements.

“The facilities at Ultimo College are great and I have enjoyed being able to acquire on-the-job skills. I was able to mix with my peers and expand on my knowledge outside the workplace and gain skills and experience that I may not have achieved in a local shop,” Eliza said.
