Weekend Associate
Welcome to all who are with us today! We want you
here and we are thankful for your presence.
Someone who has been part of this parish for
years, recently told me that he enjoys reading my little
‘welcome’ item in each week’s bulletin to see how many
different ways I can say welcome to those who are
coming here. Regardless of how I put it, it is very
necessary that we re-state over and over again that we
want visitors and regulars alike to feel at home here.
You who are here for the first time, please join us
in a full celebration of the Mass. Truly let the Word of
God, in readings and homily, speak to you. And join in
the singing as a way of praising God. And most of all, in
the Eucharist, become part of the communion with the
Lord and one another.
Again, welcome! What more can I say? - hw

Pastor’s Note:
PRE-HEATING I recall as a kid trying to bake
something, probably when Mom was
not at home. I read the recipe which
told me the temperature for the oven,
even using the usual phrase, “Pre-Heat at ___ degrees.”
To me, that seemed a waste of time, so I just turned on
the oven and put the item inside.
Needless to say, it didn’t really bake. And when I
extended time, then it got hard as rock! I learned a lesson
about pre-heating. Yet we tend to overlook ‘pre-heating’
in other cases.
And one of the best examples of this failure is
taking place right now in our society. People jump right
into Christmas without pre-heating. That is, they skip the
very important season of Advent. And without this
preparatory time, our Christmas celebration – especially
in the religious sense – is likely going to come out flat
and undone.
Advent means we try to find a quiet time within
our hearts in the midst of hectic commotion outside.
Advent means we reflect on the longing that we have for
greater fulfillment than anything on earth can provide.
Advent is all about expectation and anticipation, being
not yet where we need to be.
Advent this year is just over three weeks long,
and we know that those weeks pass quickly. Please start
the pre-heating today.
MASS AT NURSING HOME
There will be a 10:00 a.m. Mass on Friday, Dec. 6, at Portage Valley Nursing Home, Pemberville Rd. You are welcome to join the residents for this Liturgy.
EUCHARISTIC DAY
Plan to join us for prayer this coming Tuesday, December
3, for all-day Eucharistic prayer. Beginning at the end of
the 9:00 a.m. Mass, we will have exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament, which will run until a 7:00 p.m.
Vesper Service with Benediction. You may stop in any
time during the day for quiet prayer. Please see the
schedule in the atrium to sign up for a time slot for
prayer. Most of us simply need more quiet time, and this
is your opportunity. And then join us in the evening for a
powerful prayer to end the day.
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, our bulletin is
going to press early. So we will have the report of
Sunday, November 24, in next week’s bulletin. Again,
thanks to all who joyfully support this parish.
GIVING THROUGH DIRECT DEPOSIT
You can give to the church through direct deposit (ACH),
indicating how much you want to give weekly or
monthly. Please complete one of the forms found in the
magazine rack in the parish hallway and turn it in to the
parish office along with a voided check, needed for
routing purposes.
THANKS FOR THANKSGIVING
FOOD Blessed John people have come through
again, with lots of food for our St.
Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Baskets
and for our Food Drive for the
Assumption Center. These acts of kindness on your part
make a big difference in the lives of many, many people!
THANKS FOR THE BRIDGE
Perhaps you noticed the bridge over the little ditch, a
bridge that allows us to go to the relaxation and reflection
area at the east pond. Gradually, this
is being built up to be a little
meditation place. (I have spent time
on the bench this past summer,
praying and reading.)
Connor Shank of our parish
coordinated the bridge-building
efforts as part of his Eagle Scout
project. Thanks, Connor, we are truly appreciative. (The
bench and garden area were providing by previous Eagle
Scouts.)
FAITH ALIVE – SLIDES OF BUILDING
Thanks to all who came to each of the two sessions of
‘Sneak Peek’ of the building plans for our parish church
building. To help more people see where we are heading,
we will show those same slides again next week at the
beginning of each session of Faith Alive! You don’t want
to miss this.
FAITH ALIVE!
Our next Faith Alive! will be 2:00
p.m. and 5:30 p.m., next Sunday,
Dec 8. We will be exploring our
belief in the Holy Spirit. You can
register for Faith Alive! on line under ‘Faith Formation.’
Deadline for registration is today Dec 1. Don’t forget to
bring your bibles.
SUNDAY MORNING SACRAMENTAL
CLASSES FOR OLDER CHILDREN We will NOT have class today due to Thanksgiving
vacation, or on Dec 8, due to Faith Alive!
These children will receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation at our Advent Reconciliation Service at
7:00 p.m., Dec 10. There will be one final class on Dec 15
in Room 105, to reflect on their experience of the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. Class will be finished by
11:20 p.m., so the students and their families will be able
to attend 11:30 a.m. Mass. Several of the children who have already
completed their First Eucharist preparation will be
receiving First Holy Communion at the 11:30 a.m. Mass,
Dec 22.
VIOLET IN THE SNOW
The children of the parish who
participate in Children’s Liturgy of
the Word will be singing a
communion meditation at the 4:30
p.m. & 7:30 p.m. Christmas Eve
liturgies and the 10:00 a.m. liturgy on
Christmas Day. We will be singing
our song for the Responsorial Psalm
throughout Advent during Children’s Liturgy. Also the
children will be given the words this weekend. There will
be no Children’s Liturgy or communion meditation at the
11:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Liturgy.
NEW PARENT RETREAT
Our next New Parent Retreat for parents
wishing to baptize their first child here at
Blessed John is at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan 5.
Those who wish to baptize their
children should be aware we do not baptize
children during Lent, which begins on
March 5. Baptisms will resume the week
after Easter, which is April 20.

Blessed John Teen Fuel
@teenfuel23
High School
Grade 8
Grades 6 & 7
Hey High school youth, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Teen Fuel meets 6:00-8:30 p.m., Sunday, December 1, at church and will chat about the top-searched person on the internet right now, Pope Francis. In this empowering night we will learn a little bit about the Pope, get to use the green screen a bit, and discuss with each other how his words and works empower us as young Catholics! He is a real inspiration not only to people of our faith but to other faiths as well! Pope
Francis is a great conversation starter about the Catholic faith, which can lead us to help people see the beauty of Catholicism. We will take a look at that as well. Guys and girls nights will meet the following week, 6:00-8:30 p.m., Sunday, December 8, at specified locations for fun and faith-filled nights. Please be on the lookout in e-mails or texts as more details on this night are to follow.
I hope you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving with your families! I hope you felt the joy of being with your family! You might still be filled with a peace of being in a home of people who love you. Yet, I have to ask you candidates: how often do you feel that you are happy? Do you often feel at peace? Individualism, hedonism, minimalism, and relativism have become common ways of life nowadays, trying to remedy the missing joy and peace people have in their lives. Maybe you have never heard of these terms before, but you have probably encountered them in your life at some point. Confirmation meets this week 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, December 2, in the atrium to look at these different viewpoints and how they fall short of true joy and peace in the light of Jesus Christ. We will also get a glimpse of St. Thomas More’s heroic sacrifice for the faith in his own age of difficulties. It’s sure to be a great night filled with fascinating conversations with a healthy dose of fun thrown in for good measure! Make sure you remember that there will be a session for parents, sponsors, and candidates on the “Theology of the Body” 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, December 9, presented by the traveling Generation Life Missionaries. Candidates, please let sponsors and parents know about this evening so they can be in attendance with you. It is not mandatory for parents to be there, but it’s definitely an opportunity not to be missed! Within this evening we all will learn to treat each other with a greater admiration because of our divine dignity given to us by God. The hope is that we come to appreciate that dignity through this evening.
Did you have an awesome Thanksgiving break? I hope you did! We get to hang out again at Impact 6:30-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, to talk about the Holy Spirit. The relationship of God the Father and Jesus His son is important in understanding who the Holy Spirit is. It’s so amazing that Jesus came into the world through Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit! Jesus comes alive in us through the power of the Holy Spirit in the same way that He came alive through the Holy Spirit.
Through this evening we can see how the Holy Spirit works today! I would love to give all of the Impact youth a chance to show off their talents 6:30-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, in the atrium during Impact! There will be dinner provided and a lot of other fun happening! You can sign up to share your talent by contacting Phil through an e-mail or phone call with a description of your talent and how long you need to perform it!

DWELLING PLACE
Today we embark on the beautiful season of Advent. I
must admit, that this is one of my favorite seasons of the
year. I always find myself wishing it were a little longer.
In anticipation of celebrating Advent at our parish this
year, I chose to collaborate with parishioner Chris Clody
once again to write a song uniquely for our parish
Masses.
Today we will sing Dwelling Place for the first
time and continue to use it over the next weeks in
preparation for Christmas. This song focuses on allowing
ourselves to be open enough to allow Christ to enter our
hearts and minds this Advent season. It’s VERY easy to
become distracted by all of the secular preparations for
Christmas. Those preparations aren’t bad, but if we don’t
prepare our hearts spiritually, we have really missed the
point of Advent.
Its is also important to remember that we don’t
celebrate just the historical birth of baby Jesus, but also
the fact that we encounter him every day and that
someday he will return again. It is my hope and prayer
that this song will help all of us take a deep breath over
the next few weeks and enter into the true meaning of this
time of year. “We are yearning, dwell within us.” -
Michael
ADVENT RECONCILIATION
As we move into Advent, it is good to take time to reflect
and place yourself honestly before the Lord. Our Advent
Reconciliation service, with six priests present, will take
place at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 10. (That is next
week!) Plan to make this part of your pre-Christmas
preparation for your family.
WINTER WEATHER MASS
POLICY If and when snow days occur this winter,
please know that we cancel weekday
Masses on those days when the Perrysburg schools are
canceled (not delayed). As for Sunday Masses, they are
almost never canceled!

MASS AT ST CLARE COMMONS
St. Clare Commons is starting to ‘fill up’ with residents.
We are happy to welcome our new neighbors. Two
things are in the works. First of all,
members of the St. Clare Community
will be starting to come to Blessed
John for Sunday Mass. They have their
own ‘St. Clare Shuttle’ that will bring
them. Secondly, we will have one of
our weekday Masses at St. Clare, so
their residents and those of Blessed
John who come to weekday Mass, can
join together.
Starting on Monday, December 9, the usual
Monday a.m. Mass will take place in the St. Clare
Commons chapel, beginning at 9:30 a.m. instead of our
usual 9:00 a.m. time. On that day, after the initial Mass,
there will be a light breakfast for all who attend, as a
time to get acquainted with each other.
USE OF BACK EXIT (THROUGH ST CLARE)
As noted in the item on Christmas, we invite all who
come to consider using the back entrance/exit that goes
through St. Clare Commons. It is open and available. It
connects with Five Point Road and may allow you to
avoid the busier traffic on Dixie Highway. Of course, we
ask that you use caution wherever you drive.
WEEK AT A GLANCE
(Dec 1-Dec 7) Sunday: Teen Fuel, Giving Tree Begins;
Monday: Confirmation; Tuesday:
Eucharistic Day, Bible Study, RCIA;
Wednesday: Wake-Up Bible Study,
Christmas Youth Choir, House Band
Rehearsal, Emmaus Rehearsal, Impact,
Cub Scouts, Families Anonymous;
Thursday: Mixed Choir, Pastoral
Council; Saturday: Piano Recital, Giving Tree Gifts
Return.
HELPING TYPHOON VICTIMS
Catholic Charities is accepting donations for the victims of
Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Those wishing to
donate to relief efforts, distributed by Catholic Relief
Services, can place their donation in an envelope marked
“Typhoon” or “Philippines.” We will be glad to get this to
Catholic Charities. You may also text the word RELIEF to
25383 to make a $10 donation that will be charged to your
phone bill.
Thank you to those who have already made a gift
to CRS.
BISHOP INTERIM
PERIOD On Wednesday of this week,
there will be a farewell Mass for
Bishop Blair at the Cathedral.
After that time he will be
moving to Hartford, CN, where
on December 16, he becomes
the new Archbishop of that
archdiocese. This leaves our diocese without a bishop.
During the interim, there will be a temporary
administrator. That person will be elected from the
‘College of Consultors,’ which includes eight priests from
within our diocese. (I happen to be one of those
Consultors.) The temporary administrator will fill in for
the bishop until a new bishop is appointed, which could
be up to a year or more.
Please pray during this time of transition, first that
we choose a good temporary administrator of the Diocese
and then that the Holy Spirit guide the church leaders in
picking the new bishop for our diocese. - hw
REGISTRATION INTENT FORMS
Have you noticed that we have changed our Parish
Registration form? We now call it a ‘Parishioner
Registration Intent’ form. That is, if you are wishing to
register as a parishioner, please complete a form as the
first step towards registration. We will then contact you
in order to share more about our parish and to help you
find your way of being an engaged parishioner. We feel
that this approach will be more personal and help all new
parishioners get off to the right start with our parish.
We love having new members join the parish.
This approach will make it even better for you and for
us. Registration Intent forms can be found at the parish
website as well as at the church doors and in the
magazine rack.
GRIEVING THE LOSS OF SOMEONE?
We have a number of ‘Care Notes’ for those who are
suffering the loss of someone through death. You can
check out these Care Notes just to the south of the
gathering space in the hallway of the Parish Life Center.
Please take what you likely with read…or pass on to
those who need them.
FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT

RETIRED RELIGIOUS FUND
For many years now our diocese, along with all the
dioceses in this country, has had a collection during
December to support retired religious (primarily
religious women), many of whom have grown old and
have very little to live on.
The Catholic Church owes much to the
religious sisters who have taught in schools, served in
hospitals, run orphanages, and done incredible outreach
to the poor. Often they were paid nothing or almost
nothing. Religious communities are aging and
sometimes really struggling. This fund can help.
You will find some special envelopes in your
packets for this purpose as well as additional envelopes
in our church next weekend, Dec 7-8. Thank you for
supporting these sisters.
LECTOR BOOKS
All Lectors are asked to pick up one of the Lector
Workbooks after Mass this week, in Room 102. The new
liturgical cycle (First Sunday of Advent) begins today,
December 1.
WOMEN’S RETREAT WEEKEND
The men just got back from their retreat; so ladies, it is
your turn for a weekend of relaxation and renewal! This
year the women’s retreat begins at 7:00 p.m. Friday,
February 7 and ends at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, February 9
(2014). The retreat is at Lial Renewal Center, 5908
Davis Rd, Whitehouse. More details later!

CHRISTMAS MASS PLANS
Most families are already
planning their Christmas Eve
and Christmas Day gatherings
and dinners. Please take some
time to consider the
Christmas Mass you and
your family will be attending.
Two things to consider:
All the Masses will be
crowded, so we ask that
you arrive early and that
you be ready to offer
hospitality to others. The
most crowded Mass by far
is the 4:30 p.m.; some
may choose to avoid
coming to that Mass. Many in recent years have
‘discovered’ the joy of coming to the Christmas
morning Mass (10:00 a.m.).
Because of the heavy traffic for all the Masses, we ask
you to plan to use special care in coming and leaving
the premises. Please do not plan your events SO
CLOSELY that you find yourself rushing. Most
Masses will run a little longer, simply because of the
crowd. And, remember, you are welcome to use the
back driveway that goes through St. Clare Commons
and brings you out on Five Point Road.
Mass times for Christmas Eve are 4:30, 7:30, and 11:00
p.m. On Christmas Day we have one Mass at 10:00 a.m.
GIVING TREE
Our parish Giving Tree returns today. Once again,
Blessed John will be sponsoring a number of families in
need for the upcoming Christmas holiday. Thanks to
you, both children and adults will receive gifts that they
otherwise would not have under their tree.
Here are the basic “Giving Tree” instructions. It
is important that the item(s) you purchase come to
church wrapped and have attached the “tag ornament”
you took off the Giving Tree, so that our team of
volunteers will know to which family the gifts will go.
There is also a sign-up opportunity in
the atrium for those who would like
to donate a ham or cookies. As in the
past, we need families and individuals
to volunteer to deliver these
Christmas gifts. You can sign up in
the atrium as well.
A heartfelt Thank You in
advance for all your assistance in
making this a blessed Christmas for
those in need. If you would like to
volunteer your time to help in any
way, please call Shirley Urbaniak at
419-350-7086.
MID-WEEK MEDITATION
We have all had those times when we
get out of focus and forget to turn
attention to God, especially as the
week goes along. For that reason, Fr.
Herb publishes a weekly “Mid-Week
Meditation.” It is a brief opportunity
for people to turn their attention to
faith, using normal everyday
experiences to draw us back to God.
To add your name to the list, please
go to www.flocknote.com/blessedjohn. There you can
register (free of charge) and indicate how you want to
receive messages from Blessed John, either as email or on
your mobile device. Then subscribe to ‘Mid-Week
Meditation.’
PARISH WEBSITE
Our parish website is updated regularly and can probably
answer almost any question you have. Even more, it is a
good introduction for you to the life of this parish. Please
visit it often. And don’t forget you can stream Sunday
Masses live or watch them in the website archives.
Website: www.blessedjohn.org.
FAMILIES ANONYMOUS
Families Anonymous meets 6:00-7:00
p.m., each Wednesday, in Room 105.
If you are struggling with a loved one
who has issues of addiction or mental health and want to
learn how to cope by practicing the 12 steps, this meeting
is for you. For more information contact Marla in the
parish office.
