Collaborative Parishes of Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More The Church celebrates the feast of the Epiphany on January 6, or on the Sunday nearest that date. This year, the nearest Sunday was January 5. The Baptism of the Lord was then celebrat-ed on the next available Sunday, still within the Christmas season, last Sunday, January 12. The season of Christmas then ends on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This means that the next day that follows (typically Monday), is the beginning of Ordinary Time. Since the Sunday celebration has already happened, the only possible choice is to begin the first “week” of Ordinary Time on a Monday. This means the first Sunday of Ordinary Time is now the 2nd Sunday in Ordi-nary Time! Ordinary Time is the only liturgical season in the Roman Rite to begin on a week day, which is how we move from the Baptism of the Lord to the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. During Ordinary Time, the Church chooses readings and Gospels that teach us how to live ordinary Christian lives in extraordinary ways: the Way of Jesus in the world. Ordinary Time is the time in our Church calendar be-tween seasons of fasting and feasting, between Advent (fasting) and Christmas (feasting) or Lent (fasting) and Easter (feasting). During the Ad-vent and Christmas seasons, great events of Jesus’ life are celebrated: the Immaculate Conception, the Incarna-tion, the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord. On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in Saint Peter’s Square, Decem-ber 1, 2014, the Holy Father reflected on the phrase “the heavens were opened” as it related to the events of Advent, Christmas and the Lord’s Baptism. He said: “Today’s page from the Gospel emphasizes that, when Jesus had received baptism from John in the River Jordan, “the heavens were opened” to him (Mt 3:16). This fulfils the prophecies. In fact, there is an invo-cation which the liturgy has us repeat during the Season of Advent: “O that thou wouldst rend the heavens and come down” (Is 64:1). If the heavens remain closed, our horizon in this earthly life is dark and without hope. Instead, in celebrating Christmas, once again faith has given us the certainty that the heavens have been rent with the coming of Christ. And on the day of the baptism of Christ we continue to contemplate the heavens opened. The manifestation of the Son of God on
earth marks the beginning of the great time of mercy, after sin had closed the heavens, raising itself as a barrier between the human being and his Creator. With the birth of Jesus, the heavens open! God gives us in Christ the guarantee of an indestructible love. From the moment the Word became flesh it is therefore possible to see the open heavens. It was possible for the shepherds of Bethlehem, for the Magi of the East, for the Baptist, for Jesus’ Apostles, and for St Stephen, the first martyr, who exclaimed: “Behold, I see the heavens opened!” (Acts 7:56). And it is possible for each one of us, if we allow ourselves to be suffused with God’s love, which is given to us for the first time in Baptism by means of the Holy Spirit. Let us allow ourselves to be invaded by God’s love! This is the great time of mercy! Do not forget it: this is the great time of Mercy!”
Let us allow ourselves to be invaded by God’s love! Why would any of us not wish to be “invaded by God’s love?” After all, if one of us had been the only person on earth, Jesus still would have come to redeem us. He, the Good Shepherd, still would have given His Life to make a perfect sacrifice for the sins of just one of His lost sheep. That is how much Jesus loves each one of us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” “Whoever believes” will have eternal life. That is the covenant God has made with us through His Son, Jesus. If we believe in God’s love for us, then we have eternal life. Sounds simple, but we cannot take pieces of the Gospel and make them the whole Truth.
Saint Peter was the first to declare his belief that Jesus was the Messiah, but did not Jesus-shortly before His Ascension- ask Peter: “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.” Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he an-swered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd My sheep.” Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep” (Jn 21:15-17). If we believe, then we must also
love, not only God but one another. We must feed God’s sheep-each one of them-with mercy and love, because at the Last Supper, our Lord Jesus had declared: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (Jn 13: 34-35). As Pope Francis has declared, “This is a time of great mercy.” And, if God has shown mercy to us, then we must show mercy to one another. Ordinary Time, when we are neither fasting nor feasting, is indeed a good time to reflect on the love that God has for each of us, even those in our lives whom we may deem unlovable. If God loves that person so much that if he or she had been the only person on earth, He would have died just for them, then we must love them, too. If they have hurt us, we must forgive them in our hearts; we must show them the same mercy that God has shown us. This is the meaning of our Baptism.
In his Sunday homily on Baptism (Sept. 4, 2013), Pope Francis spoke clearly and directly about one virtue of our Baptism: gentleness, which he called “the forgot-ten virtue.” The Pope said: “being gen-tle, making room for others. There are so many enemies of gentleness, aren’t there? ...When the Spirit causes us to be born to new life, he makes us gentle and kind, not judgmental: the only Judge is the Lord. The proposal to be silent fits in here…Let us ask the Lord to show us and the world the beauty and fullness of this new life, of being born of the Spirit, of treating each other with kindness, with respect. Let us ask for this grace for us all.” The Holy Father further asked: “Does it not seem to you that in our own time extra fraternal sharing and love is needed? Does it not seem to you that we all need extra charity? Not the sort that is content with extemporaneous help which does not involve or stake anything, but that charity that shares, that takes on the hardship and suffering of a brother. What flavor life acquires when we allow ourselves to be inundated by God’s love!”
In this new year, let us all strive to be “invaded by God’s love” as we develop within ourselves the virtues of mercy and gentleness so that “the peace of the Lord which surpasses all understanding,” will fill our hearts, our homes and our Church.

Cardinal Seán is declaring a Year of the Eucharist
for the Archdiocese of Boston!
The year will officially begin on Holy Thursday 2020 and end on the Feast of Corpus Christi 2021. A video and a letter (in 5 languages) from the Cardinal speaking about his own love for the Eu-charist

New session collaborative bereavement support group begins on Thursday, January 30 from 12:45 to 1:45 in the Sacred Heart lower church hall. Why seek a faith-based support group? One of the things that make this group different from secular groups is that we focus on prayer and explore our faith and our dependence on God with others who are grieving the loss of a loved one. God’s comfort and healing come to us in very personal ways. God is present as we make this journey. We help and console each other through our listening and speaking. We will explore the many methods of prayer used by Catholics aver the centuries. Prayer is at the heart of this support group. It is like a compass on our journey of grief, keeping us on the path and showing us the way. When we pray we ask to be able to open ourselves more widely to receive God’s love and care. As we grow in our prayer life, we will find that we recognize more often that God is indeed with us; walking with us on this long and difficult journey. Please consider joining us for a week or a season. There are 7 meetings for this session beginning January 30 and every other Thursday until April 23rd.
Faith Formation News
Upcoming Faith Formation session: Youth in Grades 7 & 8 meet this Tuesday, January 21 in Sacred Heart Church hall at 6 pm.
Discipleship II: All candidates who expect to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in March are reminded that service forms, guidelines for writing letters to the Bishop and information for the choice of their Saint’s Name are available on the collaborative website. These documents should be presented to class no later than February 11.
Confirmation Retreat will be held in Sacred Heart Church hall on Saturday, February 8 at noon. Please note: the retreat ends with Mass at 4 pm.
Candy Sale & Raffle today: Cub Scout Pack 19 is holding its annual Hilliard Candy ($2/bar) and iPad raffle ($10/ticket) after all the Masses today. Thank you support of our collaborative Pack. Scout Sunday will be celebrated on February 9 at the 11:30 am Mass in Sacred Heart Church.
THANK YOU, SAINT COLETTA DAY SCHOOL : Most every Wednesday, students from the Saint Coletta Day School in Braintree come to Sacred Heart Church to dust all of the pews in our Church. This visit is part of a training program for students age 8-22 who attend the school. We are most grateful for this service, the students who faithfully provide it, and for their supervisor, Jim, who accompanies the students to our Church each week.
CANCER SUPPORT GROUP: This group has been a great comfort and support to those who are being treated for cancer, who are in remission or who know someone who is a victim of this disease. A Rosary for Life is prayed during this meeting. If you are interested in joining this group, please call Maureen at the parish offices.
This Wednesday, January 22nd is a national day of prayer for the protection of the unborn child. Please make this your special intention for the day and in support for those on the March for Life in Washington DC
Parent Meeting for those whose children are receiving First Communion this year will be
held on Thursday, February 6th, 6:30pm in Sacred Heart church hall.

Collaborative Food Pantry
Our Food Pantry is located in the hall at St. Thomas More Church. We are grateful for the many donations we receive each week. But this month our shelves are overflowing because of your overwhelming generosity during the Christmas season. We are also most grateful for those parishioners, who volunteer each week throughout the year to stock our shelves and to bag and deliver food to those in need, and to the members of our SVDP Conferences who coordinate this ministry of loving support to God’s People. If you know of someone in need of food, or if you have any questions about our food pantry kindly call Maureen at the office. Thank you for your continuing generosity!
