Dear Friends,Several years ago, in the spirit ofPesach, I thought that I mightcompose a new set of Passoverquestions for the twenty first cen-tury. Even though definitive an-swers to all Four Questions are notfound in the Hagaddah, we surelyknow the answers. We eat Matzah(unleavened bread) because ourancestors left Egypt in haste and

didn’t have time to let the dough rise. We eat Maror(bitter herbs) to remind us of the bitterness of the Egypt-ian bondage. We dip twice – first a vegetable in saltwater to remind us of the tears of our ancestors, and thebitter herbs in Charoset to remind us of the mortar thatwas used to create bricks in Egypt. Finally, we eat in areclined position because in the ancient world only freemen and women had the luxury of reclining when theyconsumed a meal. (If you visit the Pompeii Exhibit atthe Arizona Science Center, you can see frescos that de-pict wealthy people reclining while they eat. This ex-hibit will be open until May 28, 2018.)

Therefore, I humbly submit the following questions:

1. Why do many people today make Passoverpreparation so difficult? The answer is “It doesn’t needto be.” Of course a good Spring cleaning is in order, but you don’t have to wear a HAZMAT suit to sanitizeyour refrigerator or rent a blow torch to Kasher yourdentures. We would do well to remember that on theeve of Passover, we recite a formula in which we dis-avow any Chametz (leavened food) that we may haveoverlooked and it is considered “like the dust of theearth.”

2. Why do we spend a fortune on Passover food? One again, there’s no need to do so. Yes, there are afew things that we need to buy (e.g. a shank bone, bitterherbs, and matzah), but too many Jews needlessly buyfood items that they wouldn’t ever consider eating dur-ing the rest of the year. Who really needs jelly candy, chocolate covered matzah, and seven layer cakes madeout of potato starch? There is no lack of fresh vegeta-bles and fruits that do not need rabbinic supervision.God forbid we should eat healthy foods duringPassover! For your edification, once again we have en-closed this year’s Passover Guide published by the Rab-binical Assembly so that you can learn how to preparefor Passover this year. It also details which foods doand do not require to be under rabbinical supervisionfor Passover. And don’t forget that if you would like aBedikat Chametz Kit (to search for Chametz, orleaven), it will be available to you in the Beth El officeor you can request to have one sent to you.

3. Why do so many get together as family and friendsexclusively on Passover? The truth is that every week onthe Holy Sabbath we have the opportunity to share a deli-cious meal with loved ones. The Passover Seder is themost widely observed Mitzvah during the year (more thanfasting on Yom Kippur), but every Sabbath affords us theopportunity to enjoy the company of loved ones, to sitaround an adorned table, to feast, to sing and to savor thepresence of those who make a difference in our lives.Nothing signifies our freedom as Jews more than the abilityto observe a day of rest and renewal each and every week.

4. Why don’t we make good on our declaration atthe end of the Hagaddah, “Leshana Haba’ah Biyrusha-layim” – “Next Year in Jerusalem”? Surely it is far easierfor moderns to make a pilgrimage to Israel in the twentyfirst century than ever before. We are only a plane rideaway from enjoying the homeland of the Jewish People. While we recall the miracles of the exodus which inspiredour observance of Passover, the greatest miracle of themodern age is the establishment of the Jewish State, theState of Israel. If you have never been to Israel, what areyou waiting for? And if you have been to Israel, go again!I have posed a series of four questions for your consider-ation. You may wish to ask your own questions aroundyour Seder tables to make Pesach more fun and interestingthis year. As Claude Levi-Strauss (the French Anthropol-ogist) has taught: “The wise man doesn't give the right an-swers, he poses the right questions.”

Wherever you choose to attend Seder I hope that youcome up with your own wonderful questions, and offersome possible answers. On behalf of my family and thestaff and officers of Beth El Congregation, I wish you all aChag Kasher Vesameach, a Kosher and Happy Passover.

Dear Friends,I was 14 years old when I sang in myvery first cantorial concert. My cantorgrowing up, Yehuda Rottner, wasfriends with some of the most famouscantors in the world and he invitedthem to our synagogue for one of thebiggest cantorial concerts in SouthFlorida. The concert featured Can-tors Rottner, Yaakov Motzen, Avi Al-

brecht, Naftali Hershtik (former chief cantor of TheGreat Synagogue in Jerusalem), and Yitzchak-MeirHelfgot (who recently collaborated with Itzhak Perl-man). And then of course yours truly was thrown in tosing one cantorial piece after the intermission.

The piece I sang was entitled V’lirushalayim Ircha (AndTo Jerusalem Your City) written by Yiddish film, the-atre, and liturgical composer, Abraham Ellstein. This isa piece that is very close to my heart to this day and isone that I still perform on a regular basis. However, itwas not until recently that I learned the composer ofV’lirushalayim Ircha has a Broadway credit under hisbelt.

Abraham Ellstein was born in New York in 1907 toJewish immigrant parents on the Lower East Side ofManhattan. He is perhaps best known for writing themusic for the film Yidl Mitn Fidl made famous byMolly Picon. However, what most people do not knowabout Ellstein is that he wrote the music for a very shortlived Broadway musical, Great To Be Alive!

Great To Be Alive! opened at the Winter Garden The-atre (where Mamma Mia played for 13 years from2000-2013) on March 23, 1950. Not much is knownabout the story of this show as it was very short lived, but the following synopsis is found in the Playbill Vault:“The living and the ghosts of the dead commingle hap-pily in an old mansion in Robert Russell Bennett, Abra-ham Ellstein, Walter Bullock, and Sylvia Regan'smusical.” Unfortunately, the show closed on May 6,1950 clocking in a total of 45 days on Broadway.

This is not the only time that a Jewishly themed Broad-way show has closed prematurely. Soul Doctor, a showabout the controversial music-rabbi Shlomo Carlebach(which also used his music as the score for the show)was destined to be on Broadway for at least a year backin 2013 but closed only after 3 months. Another show,Cantorial which is a non-musical was supposed to playto a Broadway sized theater but only existed off-Broad-way (in a theater that housed less than 499 seats). Itseems that with the exception of Fiddler on the Roof,Broadway is not yet ready for a fully thematic Jewishshow despite the insurmountable amount of Jews whorun that industry.

Shalom,Friday, March 30 is the first night ofPassover. This year, as always, if youare unable to have the Seder at yourhome or be at someone else’s home, please consider attending the Beth ElCommunity Seder. Cantor Angresswill lead the traditional Seder withbeautiful singing and a deliciousmeal.

We probably all have memories of our family Seders. As young children reading the Haggadah always seemedinterminably long. The four questions, the glasses ofwine, a scrumptious meal with chicken soup, matzoballs, tzimmes, potato kugel, finding the afikomen, themelodies etc. are familiar and memorable.

Passover is not just a gastronomical experience. As weprepare for this holiday, let us not forget that one of the613 commandments is to teach our children aboutMoses leading the Children of Israel, from slavery to thePromised Land. Every Jew is required to participate inthe re-telling of the story of the Exodus: the enslavementof the Children of Israel, the bravery of Moses andAaron, the crossing of the Red Sea, the giving of the tencommandments and the travails of the journey to thePromised Land.

The claim is frequently made, that the story of Mosesand the Exodus is a national myth, and does not give the“Children of Israel,” the Jews of today, any superior rightto the specific portion of earth we call Eretz Yisrael.

Archeological evidence shows undeniably that Jews livedin this land before the days of Nebuchadnezzar, throughthe Persian conquests, the Roman empire, Turkishcaliphate and British Mandate. The first use of the term“Yehudah” (Jew) is found in the book of JeremiahXXXIV:9, written just before the Babylonian destructionof the Temple built by King Solomon, about 600 yearsbefore the destruction of the second Temple by the Ro-mans. Since the destruction of the second Temple,2000 years ago, we Jews have been saying at the conclu-sion of the Passover Seder “Next year in Jerusalem.”

The Passover Seder is an opportunity to experience thevitality of Judaism. The fact is that we Jews do exist, andhave so for centuries. Passover is a time to remind our-selves and our children that we are descendants from along line of proud people tempered by our experiencesthroughout the ages. The gathering of Jews to read theHaggaddah, reminds us of our heritage, and will lead usas we head into the future.

Dear Friends,A few bits of information I want to sharewith you…in case you did not know!

Beth El’s mission: We are an egalitar-ian, Conservative synagogue that servesthe spiritual and social needs of our con-gregants. We are the only Conservativesynagogue in Phoenix and were recog-nized by the IRS as a 501(c) (3) organi-zation in September, 1930. Imagine…

that’s going on 88 years. Although I joined the staff in2006, something like 76 years after Beth El was organ-ized, I believe we have sustained an atmosphere ofwarmth and spirituality that has so many of our familieshere from generation to generation. If I were to guess thenumbers, I’d probably be way off base, as I’m still in awewhen I meet a congregant whose family has been a partof Beth El since its inception and many more for 50 plusyears.

We offer a twice daily service - 7 days a week - where youwill find that warmth and spirituality abound. There is awide range of programming for adults and children of allages that provide multiple opportunities for members andvisitors to connect to their Jewish heritage, to each other, and to Beth El.

The learning environment in our Religious School (Di-rector Nanci Siegel Manson) and our Preschool (DirectorJoanie Charnow) are both fun and relevant – each ensur-ing that the lessons are age and grade appropriate.

The circle of life is celebrated and valued within the con-gregation and our clergy and staff provide the utmost inassistance during times of illness, loss, and of course need. And think about it…our sanctuary is spectacular. I cannottell you how much pride I feel when I’m showing some-one around our facility and walk into the sanctuary withthem. It’s beautiful with the lights on and even morebeautiful when I walk into the sanctuary and the lights arenot yet on, with the sunlight shining through our stainedglass windows. The room looks beyond spectacular.

So, now that I’ve shared some information on whatmakes us great, look at what we have to offer in March.Rabbi Lavinsky is wrapping up his Ethical Life class, Blan-ket Boosters is meeting on the 11th and 25th, Mahjongon the 7th and 21st, Adult Hebrew classes, a Family Shab-bat dinner, a Women’s Seder experience, Lunch &Learn, Book Club, Movie Matinee, Community MahjDay on the 18th , Birthday and Anniversary Shabbat, andPassover Seder at the end of the month.

I hope you take advantage of our programs – and to seeyou soon – and often!

Talmud Torah NewsPassover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is aspringtime holiday that celebratesour freedom. We remember thatour ancestors were slaves in Egyptand retell the story of the Exodus-how our people were set free.

What are we all enslaved by today?Pressure to succeed at work or atschool? Perhaps something else?

Striving for personal excellence is important to us allbut are we putting too much pressure on ourselves to“do it all?” Are we making the necessary time to takecare of ourselves and to do the things that make us trulyhappy? Passover is a time to concentrate on freeing our-selves from that which enslaves us and to appreciate thefreedom that we have. A great way to do this is to focuson spending time with your loved ones, family andfriends.

Consider having your kids do some Passover prep workwith you. “Operation feather and candle” is a personalfavorite of mine. One of the best known customs ofPassover is eating only unleavened bread (made fromdough that has not risen). All the food that is made fromleavened bread is considered chametz, not kosher forPassover. We clean our houses of all the chametz onthe days before the holiday begins.

Upon completion of this “spring cleaning” in prepara-tion for Passover, we do one final search for chametzwe may have missed the first time around. It’s easy tomake this tradition a fun activity for the whole familyand make the kids feel like they are part of an important- and highly delicate mission.

The custom, way before the Dust Buster, Roomba, andflashlight, is to carry a candle, a feather and a woodenspoon on this hunt for chametz. You use the feather tosweep the food into the wooden spoon. The candle isused for light, since the search is done at night, tradi-tionally one night before Passover begins. Its moremeaningful and exciting to do this search with the lightsoff.

Parents can carry the candle (or use a flashlight to besafe); kids can carry the feather or wooden spoon. Havea paper bag handy so you can put all the chametz in itand dispose of it properly.

Note to parents: To make sure that the search is a suc-cess, its customary to hide a few wrapped pieces ofbread or crackers (classic chametz culprits) around thehouse beforehand. Or stuff a wrapped candy bar underthe cushion of the couch; when they find it, they’ll have

Nanci Siegel Manson

a final chametz snack before Passover begins.

Ladies, ladies, ladies….Save the date for our annualWomen’s Seder on Thursday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m.Come and enjoy a night just for you and take part in our“Evening with Miriam.” Watch for more details in nextmonth’s echo.

Answers to last month’s Jewish trivia questions…

1. Q: Which fast day falls just before Purim? A: Fast of Esther

2. Q: Hadassah is another name for which Purim queen?

A: Esther

This month’s trivia question, as we are never too old tolearn something new…

1. How many matzahs are covered at the Seder table?

2. How many sons are mentioned in the Hagaddah?

Until next time….

Preschool NewsWe ended the month of February get-ting ready for Purim. The children werevery excited to make Mishloach Manotbaskets (care packages containing food)for the special people in their life andfriends at school. In school we learn alot about Gimilot Chasadim, acts of lov-ing kindness. The children are alwaystalking about taking care of each other

and doing things to help others. We also teach the childrento stand up for themselves and to not be bullied. This themeties into the Purim story and then into Passover as well.Passover has a lot of good ethical lessons for all of us to thinkabout. Passover is the most celebrated of all Jewish holidays.Passover presents us with the opportunity to get together withfamily and friends. Passover is also centered around that fa-vorite Jewish pastime -- eating! But when we look moredeeply into the holiday, we learn that without Passover therewould be no Jews. On Passover we celebrate the exodusfrom Egypt by retelling the story of how Moses led our peo-ple out of Egypt. At school the students will be busy baking, experimenting, and cleaning their rooms. The children learnabout the prohibition of eating chametz (leavened bakedgoods) on Passover. Rabbi Lavinsky will come with a candleand a feather to conduct the traditional search for chametzwith the children in their classrooms to make sure all of it isgone before the official holiday begins. Before we go on ourPassover break, we have a Seder where the children prepareeverything.

There is a common thread in all of my articles which is eth-ical living and learning. Here in our preschool we want allof the children to know how important their character is, andthat their success and happiness will depend on who they areinside, not what they have or how they look. It is importantfor parents and teachers to be advocates for character andnot casual about improper conduct. Be clear and uncom-promising. Together we can encourage your children to betrustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good cit-izens.

It is important to keep celebrating and learning about theJewish holidays, customs and traditions. They help the chil-dren build character, stand up for what is right and teach ourJewish beliefs and traditions. As the children get older andthey understand more, we delve deeper into these holidays, customs and traditions.

As an educator of young children and their families I feel itis my job to be an advocate for character. It is important thatwe as teachers and parents model the good behavior you liketo see in your child(ren). Whatever you allow, you encour-age. I continue to learn and teach by example.

Torah Fund 2018 Campaign is Here!

As we celebrate the 100th year ofWomen’s League which is just begin-ning, and the 75th year of Torah Fundwhich is just concluding, we count ourmany blessings as individuals within thecommunity of Israel. We are blessed at

Beth El Congregation with children and grandchil-dren who bring vibrancy; and with the love of familyand friends – especially our Women’s League sisters– who are a strong support to us. How good are allthese blessings in our lives!

The theme of this year’s Torah Fund Campaign isMah Tovu, meaning “how good!” is a phrase that orig-inates in the Torah, in Numbers 24:5. The full phraseis: Mah tovu ohalecha Ya’akov, mishk’notecha Yisrael- How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings,O Israel!

The Torah Fund Campaign helps support the educa-tion of future rabbis, cantors, educators and scholarswho will serve as leaders of the Conservative/MasortiMovement. Individual donors to Torah Fund at theBenefactor level of $180 or higher will receive the dis-tinctive Torah Fund pin in recognition of their gift.

This year’s pin/pendant makes a treasured keepsakeof the Women’s League centennial celebration towear with pride! Please contact our interim TorahChair, Barbara Becker to pledge your support for fu-ture generations of Conservative Jewish leaders.

Feeling a little green?Rabbi Lavinsky would very much liketo know when congregants are ill or inthe hospital. Please call AliciaMoskowitz at 602.944.3359, ext. 113so that we can put you on our MiShe-berach list and/or schedule a visit. Because of HIPAAprivacy regulations, the hospitals no longer call to tellus when a member is ill. Please keep us informed. This includes supplying contact information for mem-bers who may not be ill, but otherwise restricted in theirdaily activities. We don’t want anyone to fall throughthe cracks. Do not assume that anyone at Beth Elknows, unless you or another family member makesthe call to inform us.

The Rabbi is available for you!In addition to being able to schedule an appointmentwith Rabbi Lavinsky through the week, he has also es-tablished “drop by” office hours from 8-10:30am onTuesdays and Thursdays. If you would like a home orhospital visit, please call Rabbi Lavinsky at602.944.3359, ext. 108. He is here to serve you!
