Furthermore, the adjustable width of the gullet plate means a Passier saddle can be adjusted perfectly to suit the shape of any horse’s back. This can even be done a number of times. A Family-Owned Company with a FutureA Family-Owned Company with a Future

Passier stands for the highest level of craftsmanship. It’s a name with a long tradition, for a company which stays in the family. This ensures that some things will not change – the things which characterize a true Passier product. Since 1867.

G. Passier & Sohn is founded in 1867 by Georg Christian Passier, Regimental saddler of the Royal Ulan Regiment No. 13. He quickly establishes a clear quality concept. The company becomes the court supplier of His Majesty the Kaiser and King – a very special appointment indeed.

In 1901 his son Ernst Passier, a merchant, joins the company and heads it during the First World War. After the war the company is rebuilt – the good connections abroad are especially helpful in this phase. Thus the company is able to survive inflation and the economic depression.

In 1930 his son Georg Passier joins the company – saddler and businessman with experience in the USA. After the Second World War the destroyed production plant and sales offices of the company are rebuilt under his management. The main focus of the company is the export of quality goods made in Germany.

In 1968, exactly 101 years to the day after the founding of the company, son-in-law Jochen A. Kannemeier enters the expanding, family-owned company. Exceptionally high-quality saddles, bridles and accesso-ries – such as saddle girths, stirrup leathers, etc. – are produced in two locations.

In 1994, 80 years after the death of Georg Christian Passier, the fifth generation joins the company: at this time, Georg D. Kannemeier, is the sole manager of G. Passier & Sohn. Today the former crafts-man’s shop exports to more than 40 coun-tries on every continent. A family-owned company with a future. Since 1867.

Types of Leather – in Top Passier QualityTypes of Leather – in Top Passier Quality

Leather is a raw material that comes from a natural source – which is why meticulous quality control is so important. The ideal cut is selected from each hide for Passier saddles. This means that natural imperfections such as insect bites or scars are rarely found in hides on Passier

products. As exclusively purely vegetable tanned leather without an artificial finish is used at Passier, Passier products still maintain their natural and extremely high-quality look even many years later.

Calf Leather The softest, most comfortable leather that is currently available on the market and suitable for saddles, it is finished specially for Passier with a wax coating. It is used in the seat, knee inserts, and panels, and is absolutely non-slip.

Jupa Leather The extremely soft processed and non-slip cow hide is used in the seat and knee inserts and provides especially comfortable seating.

Stretch Leather According to a traditional process, the surface of the very durable cow hide is shrunk. This leather is used in the seat and knee inserts. It provides a good grip and a comfortable seating feeling.

Vachette Leather

The smooth, extremely hard-wearing cow hide is used in the seat and knee inserts. Vachette leather is the traditional seat leather which, however, has be-come considerably softer through modern processes.

The Leather Colors – Ultralarge Passier Selection The Leather Colors – Ultralarge Passier Selection

Black, Havana, Redwood, Sun-tan, Teak and London Colour are the leather colors used by Passier for saddles, bridles and accessories. Naturally maximum color fastness and color consistency are principal priorities as far as all leather colors are concerned. Given the right care, the colors therefore

remain consistent and, if anything, become even more attractive in the course of use. The wide selection means the perfect color is available for every rider and every horse. A large selection based on tradition because each color has its own history and its currently-preferred field of use.

Teak The walnut brown resembles the color of teak furniture. Teak is the most popular saddle color in the fields of jumping and all-purpose on the US market.

Redwood This reddish brown is a warm, natural color. The leather color Redwood has been a suitably noble alternative to black since the end of the nineties.

Black Black is the typical saddle color and is used on about 80% of all saddles today. Black is especially popular for dressage as it supports the elegant appearance of horse and rider.

Havana The warm, dark brown is the ideal saddle color for chestnuts. Havana is mostly used in Europe today in the fields of all-purpose and jumping.

London Colour This light, slightly yellowy, brown is the oldest known leather color. London Colour takes on a very nice patina when used. Today it is used primarily for jumping saddles.

Sun-tan The light brown, slightly iridescent shade is achieved by the natural coloring that leather takes on when exposed to sunlight. The extraor-dinary color ensures an interesting appearance.

The heart of a saddle is the saddle tree. The PS saddle tree was developed 50 years ago by Passier, and has been continuously produced since then by our own saddle masters in Langenhagen. More than 1,200 steps are necessary to produce it. The main materials are wood and leather. In order to achieve the high degree of flexibility, several bamboo strips

are worked into the saddle tree. The models with the PS saddle tree are available in up to seven different sizes from 16” to 19”. As every saddle is made-to-measure, it is possible for Passier to produce a saddle seat in one size in combination with saddle flaps in another size.

Metal Bands | The Passier metal bands stabilize the saddle tree and also provide the necessary flexibility. Sheet metal is purposely not used in Passier metal bands so as not to injure the fibers of the steel and to thus provide the greatest possible stability. Instead, spring band steel is used which, through after-treatment, takes on a shape which is optimum for the saddle.

Stirrup Bar | The stirrup bar of the PS saddle tree is made of a high-quality wrought bronze alloy which is produced according to a kneading process. This stirrup bar has extremely high breakage and tear-out strengths of far more than 600 Nm. This means that it is impossible for a Passier stirrup bar to break or tear out of the saddle tree under normal circumstances.

Gullet Plate | A wrought chrome-vanadium alloy is used for the Passier gullet plate. This has the considerable advantage that on the one hand, the finished gullet plate is very stable, on the other hand however, the width can easily be adjusted again afterwards – a number of times, if necessary. Another feature are the relatively short gullet plate sides which result in greater freedom for the shoulders. Riveting bolts are used instead of tubular rivets to ensure optimum strength and longevity.

Stretch Joint | The stretch joint on the PS saddle tree makes it possible to adjust the materials connected to the gullet plate to a new width in case the width of the gullet plate is changed. The wood and the especially strong and fully tanned sole leather simply “wander” with the gullet plate.

Synthetic Saddle Tree – a Result of ResearchSynthetic Saddle Tree – a Result of Research

The Passier synthetic saddle tree is made of an elastomere which was tested under space conditions. Its development and further refinement are a core element of Passier research. A saddle tree made of this synthetic material cannot break under normal conditions and can therefore respond successfully to the highest demands. Passier saddles with the synthetic

saddle tree are available in six sizes from 15.5” to 18”, with a ten-year warranty on the saddle tree. As every saddle with a synthetic saddle tree is a unique product from a master saddler’s hand made in Germany, it is possible to combine a saddle in one size with saddle flaps in another size.

Elastic Material | There is no stretch joint on the synthetic saddle tree since the synthetic materials used are so elastic that the material can adjust without any joint. This is how the synthetic saddle tree creates the perfect conditions for an optimum seat. On any horse. Gullet Plate | A wrought chrome-vanadium alloy is used for the Passier gullet plate which makes it extremely stable and has the considerable advantage that the width can always be adjusted again subsequently by an expert. This is why Passier saddles will always fit any horse’s back perfectly – and can even be adjusted a number of times, if necessary. A further feature of the Passier gullet plate are the relatively short gullet plate sides which result in greater freedom for the shoulders and mean the horse can move better. In order to ensure optimum sturdiness and longevity, riveting bolts are also used for the synthetic saddle tree. Stirrup Bar | The stirrup bar of the Passier synthetic saddle tree is made of stainless steel. As the rider’s safety comes first, this stainless steel bar also convinces through its extreme resistance to breakage and tearing with a strength of well over 600 Nm. This means that it is impossible for a Passier stirrup bar to break or tear out of the saddle tree under normal circumstances. Metal Bands | The very stable Passier metal band made of spring band steel provides highest stability as well as flexibility of the synthetic saddle tree.

Saddle Panels with Foam Inserts – the Soft RevolutionSaddle Panels with Foam Inserts – the Soft Revolution

Passier product development strives to achieve maximum horse-friendliness. This is why all saddle models are subjected to consistent model upgrading. It is therefore a logical consequence that a decision in favour of a Passier saddle is also a decision in favour of an optimum degree of comfort for your horse. The saddle panels with foam inserts developed by Passier are a particularly good

example. Because the new foam inserts ensure an extremely soft, smooth contact area with the horse’s back. Furthermore they also mean an optimum distribution of the rider’s weight. On account of the very good experience with the saddle panels, all newly made Passier saddles are now produced with the new saddle panels with foam inserts.

Gusseted Panels | All saddles with Passier saddle panels with foam inserts also have gusseted panels. Thanks to the gussets, the surface is enlarged and the fit to the horse’s back is improved. A further advantage is that it is easier to make changes later if necessary.

Foam Inserts | The very beneficial inserts consist of 10 mm Molton PUR-Ester foam with cotton backing. This foam has no memory effect which means it has excellent re-set properties. A further advantage for the longevity of the saddle is that the foam cannot be damaged during re-flocking. The saddler’s tool simply glides over the cotton fabric.

Smooth Surface | Use of the foam inserts ensures an extremely soft, smooth contact area with the horse’s back. Any small bulges or holes which may occur in the panel flocking due to heavy use can be compensated for in an ideal way so that the horse no longer feels them.

Wide Channel | The channel is designed of even width with the Passier saddle panels with foam inserts. This is ideally suited to the requirements of most horses and ponies and is thus particularly beneficial with regard to the sensitive spine.

Freedom Panels – the Great FreedomFreedom Panels – the Great Freedom

These saddle panels with optimized wither clearance developed by Passier are excellently suited to horses with wide or particularly sensitive withers. The special way in which they are made means wither contact will be sustainably avoided. As a result of the broader contact surface the saddle fits the horse’s back perfectly. The panels are available for all new Passier saddles.

For horses with particularly sensitive backs Passier has developed divided freedom panels, i.e. panels with optimized wither clearance which are divided at the rear in order to permit even greater freedom for the spine. The special design also means that these panels are particularly suitable for horses with short backs. These panels are available for selected Passier saddles.

Wider Channel The front third of the channel is especially wide, thus creating more freedom of movement for the horse’s spine in this area.

Lowered Channel Seam More space is created to the right and left of the horse’s withers, thanks to the lowering of the channel seam by 2 cm (3/4”). Contact of the sadd-le panels to the sides of the horse’s withers is virtually impossible.

Divided Panels In addition to greater wither free-dom, the horse also has greater freedom of the spine due to the individual attachment of the panels in the rear part of the saddle. This makes the channel wider throughout.

Passier not only relies on its over 140 years of experience making saddles, but also on professional riders. It is therefore also a natural consequence that many profes-sional dressage riders have now been placing their confidence in Passier products for many decades. Furthermore, for example, the Dressage Team World Champion Hubertus Schmidt, the Danish Champion and Grand Prix Winner at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Andreas Helgstrand, the top-level French riders Remy Issartel and Julia Chevanne as well as the highly successful Italian dressage rider Anna Paprocka-Campanella put their know-how as riders into the develop-ment of Passier dressage saddles. The very latest experiences from equestrian practice at international level combined with top saddle-making craftsmanship based on tradition made in Germany: this makes each individual Passier dressage saddle a top-class product, a truly impressive result.

Gusseted PanelsThe wedge-shaped piece of leather is sewn onto the panel leather in the back-third of the panels. Thanks to the increased panel volume, the surface is enlarged and the fit to the horse’s back is improved. It is easier to make changes later if necessary.

Flocking/Foam InsertsPassier saddles are filled with syn-thetic flocking. This means the saddles remain in optimum shape for many years. The new foam inserts ensure a particularly soft, smooth contact area with the horse’s back – which is especially important in the case of sensitive horses.

Deep SeatPassier dressage saddles either have a normal seat depth or, as is the case here, they are made with a cantle which is 2.5 cm (1”) higher, the so-called “deep seat”. Only especially soft, non-slip seat leather is used at Passier.

Supports These differ according to the saddle model. Generally, the thigh supports and knee blocks support the opti-mum leg position of the rider without restricting this in any way.

Adjustable Gullet PlateThanks to the short sides of the Passier gullet plate, a large degree of shoulder freedom is permitted. The horse is not limited in its freedom of movement. As a result of the adjustable gullet plate, all Passier saddles can be fitted to any horse and can be adjusted re-peatedly. The channel is at least 5 cm (2”) wide on all Passier saddles.

Narrow TwistThe particularly narrow twist means the rider has very close contact with the horse on all Passier saddles.

Antares Dressage Saddle

Comfortable Riding in Top FormOn this exclusive dressage saddle, made of particu-larly smooth and supple leather, the saddle pommel is ground down 1 cm (1/2”) lower providing more freedom of movement for the hands. The smaller thigh supports mean the rider has maximum freedom of movement. Naturally, as an option, the Antares is also available with a deep seat and larger and thicker thigh supports. The Antares is a classical dressage saddle which is extremely comfortable for the horse and with which horse and rider can cut an exceptionally good figure.

Safety in Every RespectThis modern dressage saddle with pre-formed knee inserts offers the rider particularly close and direct contact with the horse. Furthermore, the saddle is completely slip-proof in the leg area because the small as well as large saddle flaps are covered with Calf leather. The thicker thigh supports also make it particularly easy for the rider to keep the legs in place. Care ProductsCare Products

Every quality product should be cared for properly so that its high quality is maintained for as long as possible. Passier recommends treatment at least every five days after riding, cleaning and greasing the saddle all over, including the saddle panels. In order to protect the quality leather and prevent damag-ing it, only Passier Saddle Soap, Passier Lederbalsam and Passier Bridle Cleaner should be used to care for Passier saddles and bridles. This will ensure that all Passier pro ducts remain in first-class condition for a very long time.

Saddle SoapPassier Saddle Soap is an effective cleaner for all types of leather because of its low solvent content. Moreover it helps to mini- mize color loss. Art. no. 915

Passier examines the product itself in these cases. There is a special warranty on all Passier saddle trees. Passier guarantees – for five years on all PS saddle trees and for ten years on all synthetic saddle trees, starting from the date of purchase – that there are no concealed defects. This warranty covers all defects that could not be detected at the time of transfer, and which are not the result of improper handling, care, or repair work by third parties. Correct MountingCorrect Mounting

In order to maintain the high quality of a Passier sad-dle, it is important to mount correctly. The wide-spread practice of reaching for the saddle cantle to pull oneself up with the right hand inevitably leads to a twisted saddle tree. Therefore, when mounting one should reach the right hand over the seat of the sad-dle while on the ground. Even better is the use of a mounting block so that the back of the horse and the saddle are not strained.

The Perfect Saddle-FitThe Perfect Saddle-Fit

Only a saddle with a perfect fit can ensure that a horse can move optimally and perform at its best. If the saddle does not fit correctly, then the horse is limited in its freedom of movement and may develop painful pressure points. Passier saddles therefore can be made to fit any horse. The precise measurement of the horse’s back and three informative photos are important for this. For the pictures, first saddle the horse without the saddle pad and ride it for about ten minutes before you take the photos. Then move the horse to a level surface and have it stand straight, holding its head high.

1. Please photograph the horse from the left side with the saddle.

2. Now take a picture from the front into the chamber so that the distance between withers and the chamber can be seen.

3. Now remove the saddle from the horse and photograph the horse from the left side without the saddle.

Measuring Made EasyMeasuring Made Easy

Important for the perfect saddle-fit is the precise measurement of the horse’s back and the lengthwise line of the spine. A flexible piece of wire is suitable for the measurement (recommended is baling wire, about 2 mm (1/10”) in diameter and 50 cm (20”) long). The wire must lie closely on horse’s back so no space is left between the wire and the horse’s back.

The Crosswise Measurement | The wire is placed across the spine of the horse at the three points marked on the sketch, at a distance of 15 cm (6”) each. The first measuring point is two to three fingers behind the scapula. After measurement, the wire is placed on the template and traced using a fine point pen.

The Lengthwise Measurement | The wire is placed along the spine so that both ends extend past the three points marked for the crosswise measurement on each end. The shape of the wire is traced on the template. Afterwards please mark the places in the drawing where the lengthwise measurement inter-sects with the three crosswise measurements.

Then deliver this form after it has been completely filled out, the photos, and the saddle to an author-ized Passier dealer or send them directly to G. Passier & Sohn GmbH, Am Pferdemarkt 8+10, 30853 Langen-hagen, Germany. It takes about ten working days to make the changes.
