The apple (1) is a popular fruit today. However, modern (2) scientists have found evidence that apples (3) were grown in (4) ancient times. Carved representations of the apple (5) appeared on tombs (6) and buildings. The remains (7) of apples (8) that had been reduced to charcoal were found in villages of the (9) Stone Age. Indeed, the apple’s long history accounts for the many myths about (10) it. In folklore it was (11) thought that certain apples kept people young (12) forever. Dunking for (13) them was (14) originally believed to be a way to foretell the future. (15) According to another tale, the destruction of Troy was caused when Gods (16) violently quarreled over a (17) golden apple. Everyone has heard about a (18) mysterious man (19) who distributed apple seeds (20) during the 1800s. John Chapman, who was known was Johnny Appleseed, wore a tin pot for a hat (21) and carried a pouch of (22) those seeds that early American settlers had (23) brought for themselves so that they could grow trees. His act of (24) generosity spread trees across the country. (25) Well, apples (26) still exist after more than two million years of cultivation. (27) Yes, we certainly (28) enjoy the twenty-five varieties that are grown for eating (29) or for cider and (30) applesauce.
