Eniola AYODELE Results: AAAbReading Medicine at the University of Manchester“The medical school application process can be quite convoluted and isdefinitely extremely competitive. Bosworth has provided me with exceptional support in this journey, from arranging talks with leadinglocal Doctors, to multiple full mock medical (MMI) interviews. As a result, I was as best prepared for my real interviews as I could have been,which may not have been the case had I been a student elsewhere.Bosworth is the best thing that has happened to me.”

Individual Support, Advice andFeedback• Our students have one to one meetings with our MedicCoordinator. Students are given individual support andguidance throughout their medical preparation and UCASapplication. This can include exploring students’ strengthsand areas for development, advice about work experienceand voluntary work, choosing the right university andcourse for them, and discussions about any extra researchthey need to carry out to strengthen their application.

Our students are set their own individual targets to maximise their chance of success; activities to prepare foradmissions tests (UKCAT or BMAT), further work experience or voluntary activities, a specific research project or EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), participation in competitions such as the Chemistry or Biology Olympiad and Maths Challenges.

• Every student is offered a practice interview within college with a senior member of staff. These are formal interviews lasting 20-30 minutes followed up by individualfeedback on performance and areas to improve.

• This year we are also offering a practice interview with aMedical Admissions Tutor from Nottingham University. Thiswill take the form of a 20 minute formal interview with individual feedback. The interviewers will apply the criteriathey use in assessing and selecting their own medical students, and so will provide students with a realistic assessment of their performance at interview.

• Many universities are now introducing a ‘multiple mini interview’ (MMI) style of interview. Here, students have aseries of several mini-interviews lasting 5 minutes, eachwith a different tutor, designed to test a range of skills.These could include things as diverse as; subject knowledge, dealing with ethical dilemmas, data analysis andassessing students’ empathy. This assesses their ability todeal with challenging situations, remain calm and confident, and to ‘think on their feet’. In College, we aim to simulatethis experience as closely as possible. All students receivefeedback on their interviews.

orough Preparation for Admissions Tests (UKCAT andBMAT)Students applying for medical courses usually need to takeone or more admissions tests; the Bio-Medical AdmissionsTest (BMAT) or UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). Thesetests help the universities choose between many highly academic applicants. A student’s score in these tests is akey piece of information used to select candidates for interview. We can help you improve your score. BMAT isused by some of the top universities in the UK; Universityof Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College, UCL,Royal Veterinary College, and the Brighton and SussexMedical School. Over 20 UK universities ask students tocomplete the UKCAT, including the universities of Warwick, Edinburgh, Manchester, Nottingham and King’sCollege, London.

• Introduction to UKCAT / BMATAn introductoryseries of seminars to increase familiarity with the types ofquestions asked, and to provide tips and strategies for answering them.

• Action Plan Students are helped to develop their ownindividual action plan to prepare for BMAT or UKCAT. Thisincludes regular practice of past test questions, taking testsunder timed conditions to develop time management skillsand development of critical thinking skills.

• Critical Thinking Both the UKCAT and BMAT testsrequire students to read and critically evaluate passages oftext. They might be asked whether a particular conclusionis valid, or whether there is enough reliable evidence tosupport a conclusion. The college offers a 12-week “criticalthinking” course to increase students’ ability to analyse andevaluate information in this way. This builds skills and confidence in answering UKCAT and BMAT questions.

• Practice Tests Students complete past test questionsunder examination conditions to help develop time management skills and assess their level of preparation. Theresults of these tests are used to focus their preparationon key areas.

Valuable Work ExperienceRelevant work experience and long term voluntary workin the community are essential for students choosing Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry. Both of theseare key pieces of information which universities look forbefore they will consider their application for medicine.The skills and experiences that students develop from taking part in work experience and voluntary work willhelp them write a strong personal statement and performbetter in an interview.

At Bosworth Independent College, these are organised byan experienced and dedicated member of staff, and include;

• Support with application for a full week of work experience at our local NHS hospital. Students workalongside doctors and other healthcare professionals, visiting several departments. They are able to observe first-hand the typical day of a doctor, and witness minorprocedures in action.

•Voluntary work in a local care home, charity shops andour local school. This helps potential medical students todemonstrate a long-term commitment to their communityand a willingness to give up their time to help others. Theywill also develop key skills vital for a medical student; theseinclude leadership, teamwork, reliability, resilience and anability to communicate effectively with a wider range ofpeople such as, children and older people.

• Opportunities to volunteer, help at other events in thelocal community and to raise money at charity events.These help demonstrate a desire to help the local community and further develop their skills and experience.

• Students can participate in a First Aid training course organised by St John’s Ambulance, and are awarded a certificate.

Intensive Classroom SeminarsMedical students meet regularly as a group during Year 12and 13. These seminars are organised by an experiencedteacher who leads discussions on a variety of topics;

• Preparation and practice for interviews. From making agood first impression, to dealing with the most challengingquestions, these interactive seminars help prepare medicalstudents for their all-important interview. We share tips ondealing with commonly-asked questions, as well as performing well with more difficult ethical questions, suchas ‘Do you agree with euthanasia?’, or ‘Should our hospitalemploy a doctor who has Hepatitis C?’

• How to get the most out of work experience and voluntary work. Medical students are expected to be reflective. We encourage students to keep a diary, thinkabout their experiences and ask questions about thingsthey have seen or done. This helps prepare them for interview questions which will explore their work experience in detail.

• Understanding the NHS and the role of a doctor, dentistor vet. Students research and discuss the aims and principles of the NHS, the importance of any changes taking place, as well as its structure and organisation. Theaim is to provide a realistic view of working in the NHScompared to a private healthcare environment.

• Current medical and healthcare issues and their ethicalimplications. Students research, give presentations on, anddiscuss a range of issues such as healthcare rationing, diabetes, the obesity crisis and the implications of patientchoice in the NHS. The aim is to develop an awareness oftopical issues, as well as to develop our students’ skills andvocabulary in discussing them. This knowledge is vital forstudents in writing their personal statement and in performing well at interview.

Visits and SpeakersOur students benefit from a wide range of other eventsdesigned to help them prepare and apply for medicalschool, from writing a personal statement to developing arealistic understanding of the challenges and rewards of acareer in medicine.

• Students attend the ‘Oxford and Cambridge Conference’,held last year in Birmingham. They have the opportunity toattend workshops on Medicine, Dentistry or VeterinaryScience to gain a realistic understanding of what admissions tutors are looking for in their applicants. Thesession on ‘Making a Competitive Application’ helps themto understand how to make their application stand out,and what steps they need to take to strengthen their application.

• We invite professionals into college, such as doctors andnurses, to talk about their experience of working in healthcare. For example, in a recent workshop with anurse, students were able to ask questions about her experience of working in an NHS hospital alongside doctors. This enabled them to see the role of a doctorfrom a different perspective.

• Previous Bosworth students who are currently studyingat medical school come back to visit us and talk to students about their courses and universities. They answerquestions about the application process and their experience of medical school. This helps to develop a realistic understanding of what it is like to be a medicalstudent.
