Resistivity: A measure of a material's ability to oppose the flow of an electric current. Inverse of conductivity. Insulators normally have resistivity values> 1011

Ohm.cm. Affected by temperature and environment.

Rutile: An ore of titanium (a form of titanium dioxide) .

s Sialon: Acronym for silicon aluminium

oxynitride. A development of silicon nitride. High strength, good thermal properties, high wear resistance. Uses: wear-parts, jigs and fixtures. Electrically conductive grades have a titanium carbide (TiC) addition.

Silica: Silicon dioxide (Si02).

Silicate: Any substance which is regarded as being formed from silica together with other oxides with an extended polymeric anionic structure built up from linked (Si04) tetrahedra.

Silicon Carbide: A range of materials produced by several manufacturing routes. Good thermal properties, hardness, poor electrical insulator. Many engineering applications.

Silicon Nitride: A range of materials produced by various processing routes. Good thermal and mechanical properties. Widely used for engineering applications.

Sillimanite: A silicate of alumina. Occurs in slender rhombic prisms or in fibrous masses.

Shock Resistance: The ability of a material to resist sudden changes in condition without failure, e.g. impact loads. See also: Thermal shock.

Slip/Slip casting: A liquid slurry that is poured into a mould. Absorption of water by the mould cause the slurry to begin to harden at the mould surface, the remaining liquid slurry is decanted, leaving behind a thinwalled ceramic casting.

Soft magnet: Ferromagnetic material that has a small hysteresis loop and low energy loss in alternating fields.

Sol-gel process: Production method for ceramic materials. A polymerlike solution (sol) containing metal ions and oxygen is prepared; the solid oxide (gel) precipitates from the solution and is fired.

Specific heat: The energy required to raise the temperature of unit mass of a material by one degree Celsius.

Spinel: A group of natural oxide minerals divided into three series: spinel (MgAI204); magnetite; chromite. Crystallizing in the cubic system. Applied to any of a large number of artificial minerals having similar structures. Magnesium spinels have similar properties to alumina. Uses: refractories.

Spodumene: A silicate of aluminium and lithium. Variable colour.

Steatite: A massive variety of talc, normally of a grey or grey-green colour with an greasy/soapy feel (soap-stone). Applied to MgO.Si02 compositions, with a low clay content. Uses: technical ceramics (electrical, chemical, milling).

T

Tensile Strength: The stress that corresponds to the maximum load in a tensile test.

Thermal conductivity: Rate at which heat is transferred through a material.

Thermal emission: Emission of photons from a material due to excitation of the material by heat.

Thermal shock: Failure of a material caused by stresses introduced by sudden changes in temperature.

Thermal stresses: Stresses introduced into a material due to differences in the amount of expansion or contraction that occur because of a temperature change.

Thoria: Thorium dioxide (Th02). Used for gas mantles and in special refractories; radioactive.

Titanates: A family of compounds widely used in the electronic industry as 'functional ceramics' for their dielectric, piezo-, pyro-, or ferroelectric behaviours. Capable of being modified, doped or blended to produce a wide range of characteristics. [See also: Barium Titanate, Bismuth Titanate, Lead Titanate, Lead Zirconate Titanate, Magnesium Titanate).

Titania: [See: Titanium dioxide).

Titanite: A mineral composed chiefly of calcium titanosilicate; also called 'sphene'. Varying Iron content, often also Manganese and Yttrium.

Titanium Diboride (TiB2): A hard, strong ceramic of growing interest for its good chemical resistance, mechanical and thermal properties.

Titanium Dioxide: Rutile (Ti02) with low additions of other oxides. Uses: electronics, low-friction parts (threadguides). Conductive grade (partially reduced) for discharging static electricity (textile processing).

Titanium Carbide: Used in the ceramics industry as an addition. Other uses: powder metallurgy wear-parts.

Transducer: A device that receives one type of input (such as strain) and provides an output that may be of a different type (such as an electrical signal).

Transformation toughening: A means of improving the toughness of ceramic materials by taking advantage of volume changes that accompany a polymorphic transformation (induced by cracks). Zirconia grades are commercially available.

INTRODUCTION

The conversion factors listed here have been used throughout the book. Data originally supplied in a variety of metric and imperial units has been presented in a standardised set of units based on the Systeme Intemationale d'Unites (S.I.), taking into account the differences between UK and US quantities. Multiple units and prefixes are also given.
