Rush Lake and the North Branch of the Thunder Bay River are found in this compartment. Rush Lake currently has a healthy panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike population. The primary focus of wildlife habitat management will be to address the habitat requirements identified for the listed featured species found in this compartment. These species include ruffed grouse, black bear, and white-tailed deer. Based on the selected featured species, some of the most significant wildlife management issues in the management area are the maintenance of young forest, the retention of large, over-mature trees and snags and the maintenance and expansion of hard mast and mesic conifer components. Surface sediments consist of coarse-textured glacial till and lacustrine sand and gravel. The glacial drift thickness varies between 200 and 400 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Devonian Antrim Shale and Traverse Formation. The Antrim is quarried for cement products and the Traverse for limestone. Gravel pits are not located in the area, but potential is good. The compartment has an older Niagaran well drilled just to the north, a dry hole. This area has very limited potential for the Antrim Shale. There are no oil and gas leases in the compartment. Fair access. Many forest roads are seasonally wet, partially closed, or are flooded. To provide for the protection, integrated management and responsible use of a healthy, productive, and undiminished forest resource base for the social, recreational, environmental, and economic benefit of the State of Michigan. Harvests prescribed will help balance the age classes of aspen and promote forest health within northern hardwood cover types through salvaging beech from stands infected with beech scale.

Topography is flat to mildly rolling. Upland soils are predominantly loamy sands, especially Millersburg. Lowlands are various mucks. The LTA map shows this as a drumlin field—½ upland, ½ wetland.

Adjacent land is mostly other state land. There are a few hunting and seasonal residential properties around the compartment and Rush Lake. The Jones subdivision sits in the middle of the compartment within section 20.

Activities must follow Best Management Practice (BMP) guidelines when conducted within the areas that are significantly wet and/or adjacent to the North Branch Thunder Bay River and Rush Lake.

Recreational Facilities and Opportunities:

Fire Protection:

Additional Compartment Information:

The area is primarily used for hunting and fishing.

This compartment is located in the protection area of the Atlanta DNR and the Hillman Fire Department. Hillman Fire department would most likely be last on scene of any fire in the area due to their distance from the area. The Atlanta DNR has mutual aid agreements with Hillman Fire Department and also supplies them with GSA 6x6 fire unit. Fires in this area have a low potential to becoming very large due to the lowland areas. There have not been the frequency of human caused fire here as near some other subdivisions.

The following reports from the Inventory are attached:

Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class

Cover Type by Harvest Method

Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors

Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors

Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested)

Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas

Site Condition Details

The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps:

Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers

Proposed treatments

Site condition boundaries

Details on the road access system

Critical habitat areas are established via a consultative and cooperative process between the DNR and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service for the recovery of threatened and endangered species, as governed by Part 365, Endangered Species Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, and the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. This is an active program, with proposed species plans in various stages of review. As of now only two exist, Kirtland Warbler Habitat and Piping Plover Habitat.
