Something There: The Biology of the Human Spirit

by David Hay

For readers interested in the relationship between science and religion, Something There proposes a new biologically based theory of spirituality. The author, David Hay, a zoologist by training, applies scientific method to religious inquiry. In so doing, he offers a new account of the importance of spirituality for human well-being. According to Hay, the human species possesses a need for spirituality because of a development in the evolutionary process. Spirituality is hard-wired into our biological make-up and evolves through natural selection because it has survival value. Hay argues that spirituality is what enables people to relate ethically to other human beings and to their environment. Shelf list #204/HAY

Discerning Charisms Program Why STA is implementing this program? It’s Personal, Practical and Challenging! An insight into the role we can play in the Church. A liberating experience. Gives the time and the confidence to reflect on

your career path and your gifts. It is like going to the optician, it all becomes clearer

about how your gifts assist others and bring fulfillment to your life. You can feel more at home with your giftedness.

Last Saturday 19 parishioners attended the initial Call & Gifted workshop in preparation for bringing the Living The Mission: Discerning Our Charisms program to the entire STA community. Parish leadership has committed itself to this program and we know the process will be meaningful to many. The program has three components: 1) a Call & Gifted Workshop, 2) a discernment interview, 3) small group discussions and discernment. Our hope is that once we begin offering the program on an ongoing basis, many in the parish will embrace this program as a means of spiritual growth and personal insight.

God has determined…that I should reach that which is my greatest happiness. God looks on me individually. Calls me by my name. Knows what I can do, what I can best be, what is my

greatest happiness, and God means to give it to me.

John Henry Newman

It has been about 2,000 years since Jesus first called his disciples to follow him, a time when his Jewish society was essentially divided into two groups-those who followed each and every law of the faith and those who weren't so attentive to it. Today, we seem to have developed a knack for dividing ourselves among many other stark and diverse groups, whether it be wealth, politics, ethnicity, or religious affiliation, to name just a few. Matthew was a tax collector, and before Jesus called him, he was considered a part of the society of sinners in the eyes of the religious leaders. So why did Jesus call him, and not one of those who obeyed every law of the Jewish faith? Why did he sit down with Matthew and others who needed guidance in their lives? Very simply, as Jesus put it, one does not see a physician if one is healthy. So, too, are we called to sit down with Jesus. Matthew, and the others who followed Jesus, did what the Catechism calls "a radical reorientation of [his] whole life, a return, a conversion to God with all [his] heart" (CCC 1431). Because it is just not enough to say we are sorry for our past sins, the sacrament of reconciliation calls us to begin with a fresh dedication to living our lives each and every moment with the grace of God. Doing so, we will end worldly divisions and achieve the mercy he desires for us.

Sandbagging Training

The Story County Coalition for Disaster Recovery (CDR), in cooperation with the City of Ames, is offering a Community Sandbagging Training on Saturday, June 21st, from 12:00-3:00pm. The training will be located at 2008 24th Street, in the parking lot of First Evangelical Free Church. Anyone interested in attending must be at least 16 years of age and physically able to lift 35-40 pounds. Trainees will learn the basics of how to fill and pass sandbags correctly and safely, and how to build the most effective dike. Please bring gloves and wear closed toe shoes. The Coalition for Disaster Recovery is under the sponsorship of Story County Emergency Management Agency. Its mission is to strengthen the public's level of disaster preparedness. Local flooding is one of the most likely hazards that could occur in Story County. For more information, call 292-8890. Please turn in your CDR Volunteer form (place in collection, bring to parish office, or place in box on information table in Gathering Space) — additional forms at the information table - help us to compile a database of volunteers in case of a disaster or emergency.

Father’s Day … A Day to Celebrate the Men in Our Lives!

Ryan, my two-year-old nephew, is beginning to talk in sentences. Recently, he was asked, “Are you a mommy’s boy or a daddy’s boy?” He responded in a confident, very masculine manner, “Daddy’s boy!” From Ryan’s innocence, I discovered God, the Father, posing the same question to me. Do I belong to my earthly Father or my Heavenly Father? How do they reflect one another in earthly and spiritual ways? As a female, how do I reflect my masculine qualities in my personality and spirituality?

Father’s Day is a day to honor not only our father, but all men who play a significant role in our personal lives.

Men are challenged, and at times conflicted, to be positive role models in a self-centered, “all-about-me” secular world versus being protective, vulnerable and forgiving in the spiritual world.

In The Wild Man’s Journey – Reflections on Male Spirituality: Revised Edition, Richard Rohr, OFM and Joseph Martos discuss seven spiritual promises for men found in scripture.

I promise to seek Jesus as my teacher, my model

and the goal of my life. Without a Lord I am burdened with trying to be my own minister (Colossians 1:24).

I promise to seek union with the eternal Christ, who is both hidden and revealed in all people, and in all created things, especially in those who are wounded, rejected or outside my limited worldview (Hebrews 13:2).

I promise to pursue vital relationships with a few other men as the basic building block of the mystery of Church (Matthew 18:20).

I promise to pursue a regimen of spiritual disciplines in my life, a Gospel ethic in my private and my professional life, and unpaid service toward the needs of my community (Matthew 6).

I promise to support the mission of my parish, to unite my family in public prayer with my parish, and to model a positive attitude of love and justice in all parish efforts (1 Corinthians 1:10-13).

I promise to take personal responsibility for my actions, to be accountable for my commitments, especially those of husband, father, son, brother— fully active in the house Church (Ephesians 5:21-33).

I promise to be a truly Catholic man by retaining unity with the Bishop of Rome and the universal Church, by weekly participation in the Eucharist and concrete concern for those suffering throughout the world (John 13:1-20).

May we find time this month to affirm, remember and celebrate the gift of the “father figures,” living and deceased, in our lives. “Abba Father!”

Kris Egan
