Todays Readings First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 The Lord wants all people to love and honor his name. He says that those who honor him by obeying all of his laws will be “made joyful in my house of prayer.” Second Reading: Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Paul describes his hopes that his fellow Jews will follow the example of the Gentiles he has been preaching to. He claims that just as God has mercy for their disobedience, he wishes to show mercy to the Jews as well. Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 A Canaanite woman begged Jesus to help her daughter, who was being plagued by a demon. Jesus at first refused her and said that “My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The woman was so persistent that Jesus said she had great faith and then he healed her daughter.

Life Memorial on the hill between the two parking lots There is a growing number of Catholic Parishes that have erected memorials / monument stones, commemorating all the children who

have died because of abortion. While I find this a noble thing to do, I must admit, they leave me little puzzled. There is more to the sins against life than abortion.

While not wanting to make light of the abortion problem, the sins against life are

not just about that one issue. That understanding is very myopic. We need to look at the whole of history, to see the bigger picture, and not just one kind of sin endemic to our modern times. The sins against life include the sins of war, slavery, genocide, ethnic cleansing, child abuse, elderly abuse, prejudice of race, creed and sex. There are the sins of domestic violence, pornography, human trafficking, euthanasia, the death penalty, the numerous addictions that enslave people, along with our failure to be good stewards for the gifts of the earth – ranks high in humanity’s sins against life - to name but a few. These sins against life are as old as history itself, they far out number the sins of abortion, and they are just as deadly to humanity and our relationship with God. My reason for having the crucifix as the focus of this memorial for life, and not the usual image of Mary holding the child Jesus, is also a theological one. Jesus Christ is Life. In rejecting and murdering him, we tried to destroyed life itself and it’s author. And yet, his love for us is so fierce, in spite of us rejecting his love and murdering him, he holds out to us a promise of a new beginning. Because of his loving forgiveness, he restores life to us in full by his death and resurrection. Hence the prayer stone…

FATHER FORGIVE US

FOR THE SINS AGAINST LIFE

I want to thank our Parish Knights of Columbus for their generosity in donating the prayer stone at the foot of the crucifix. Thanks also to the Knights for their donation in getting several problems with concrete around the church property fixed, making it safer for all and for calking the pavements making them water proof and preventing problems in the future. I also want to thank John Jackson for all his days of hard work in getting the sight for the memorial prepared and for making the foundations for the crucifix and prayer stone as well as the placement of the shrine itself. Thanks too, to Tim Yoder for your help in getting the shrine put in place. With prayerful wishes and thanks to all,

Fr. Rich

In prior weeks, we provided information on the 1st Degree of the Order, Charity; the 2nd Degree of the Order – Unity: the 3rd Degree – Fraternity and the 4th Degree – Patriotism. This week we will cover the topic of The Color

Corps Since the establishment of the Patriotic Degree in 1900, the Color Corps have provided honor guards for religious and civic functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus. They are distinguishable by their official regalia of tuxedos, capes, chapeaux, and swords. The Color Corps of the Knights of Columbus are the uniformed members of the Fourth Degree. They are the ones that are most noticeable at church and public functions, parades, etc. They also act as Honor Guards at funerals for deceased members. The Corps Uniform basically follows a naval theme with ranks and insignia. Note that the chapeaux, which are never called hats, are similar to the old naval uniforms. Cape colors are an indication of rank: • Vice Supreme Masters wear blue capes and chapeaux. • Masters wear gold capes and chapeaux. •District Marshals (District level Color Corps Commanders) wear green capes and chapeaux. • Faithful Navigators (the leader of the 4th Degree Assembly) wear white capes and chapeaux. • Color Corps Commanders wear purple capes and chapeaux. • Other Color Corps members wear red capes and chapeaux.

Former District Marshalls, and Past Faithful Navigators are all permitted to wear their respective capes and chapeaux when they finish their term of office. You will occasionally be seeing Color Corps members participate in the Masses on Saturday and Sunday. Their duties will include escorting Father Rich and Deacon Joe to and from the alter. They will also escort the parishioners that will present the gifts during the offertory. It should be noted that there has been a recent change in the Color Corps Regalia. When the new uniform has been finalized we will point out the changes to everyone.

Remember we are always seeking the fellowship of Catholic men and their families. Please see a Knight for more information on our social and charitable works or check the Bulletin for additional contact information. Please be on the lookout for information regarding our upcoming social events including a family game and pizza night, and a holiday program that will be held in conjunction with the Breaking Bread Committee.

The Healthy Family 2017 New for 2017 we began a series of articles, at least once monthly, to encourage healthy marriages and family life. Too often couples and/or families fall into a rut within daily living and aren’t sure where to turn for advice. The Catholic Church celebrates the sanctity of life, marriage and families and there is a plethora of knowledge to be had, right at our fingertips. We will feature different material from many sources; some weeks peaking your interest greatly and others you may not feel pertain to you now, but could in the future. The series will also be kept on our parish website (stjohnsfamilyoffaith.com), for reference, along with many more articles too long for the bulletin. We hope this series will find you rejuvenated in your personal life and struggles, with your faith right beside to assist. Happy 2017 to "The Healthy Family"!

Volunteer with Convoy of Hope Convoy of Hope was founded in 1994 by the Donaldson family in gratitude for all the help they received after their father was killed by a drunk driver in 1969. Through collaboration with churches, businesses, government agencies and other nonprofits, Convoy of Hope has served more than 80 million people throughout the world who

are impoverished, hungry and hurting. Convoy of Hope is a nonprofit organization that serves guests of honor–in dozens of communities throughout the world–by providing them with free groceries, health and dental screenings, haircuts, family portraits, meals and much more at their signature, one day events. They were in Reading 10+ years ago, and now they’ll be coming to Norristown, PA. Volunteers are an important part of this community event and JAM members plan to participate to help bring guests of honor a poverty-free day. Saturday, Sept. 23. A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH NURSES MINISTRY... Talking with Your Doctor You can play an active role in your health care by talking to your doctor. Clear and honest communication between you and your physician can help make smart choices about your care. It is important to be honest and upfront about your symptoms even if you feel embarrassed or shy.

Tips that can help you talk with your doctor:

• Write down a list of questions and concerns before your appointment

• Consider bringing a close friend or family member

• Take notes about what the doctors says

• Learn how to access your medical records

• Remember that nurses and pharmacists are also good sources of information

• Provide a list of all of your medications including any natural supplements that you may be taking
