Dear parishioners,
While many people’s favorite Advent hymn in the English-
speaking world is “O Come O Come Emmanuel,” and mine as
well, another one I very much appreciate is “On Jordan’s Bank,”
which I hope some of you all get to here this weekend. It speaks
of the message of St. John the Baptist, preparing the way for
Jesus’ ministry among the people.
When we think about it, this Advent focus on John the Baptist is
somewhat strange for this particular season. We usually think of
Advent first in terms as a preparation for Christmas, the celebra-
tion of Jesus’ birth, rather than His adult ministry. If we go deep-
er, we look at Advent in terms of preparing for Jesus’ second
coming at the end of time. His adult ministry, however, doesn’t
really fit into either of those easy categories.
What this attention on John the Baptist’s preparation for Jesus
does, then, is to remind us that Christmas is about the reception
of Jesus as King and Messiah and Savior. It encompasses not just
His conception, incarnation, and birth, but also His ministry and
kingship. The overall focus of Advent is learning to open our
own hearts to Jesus, to His salvation and His kingdom.
Our first reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah tells us of
how the Lord’s anointed, or Messiah, will bring about a time of
tremendous peace when “the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
and then leopard shall live down with the kid; the calf and the
young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide
them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their
young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall
play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s
lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all My holy mountain; for
the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water
covers the sea.” However, this peace comes about after the Mes-
siah “strikes the ruthless with the rod of His mouth, and with the
breath of His lips… slays the wicked.” This resembles what John
the Baptist says at the end of our Gospel reading: Jesus’
“winnowing fan is in His hand. He will clear His threshing floor
and gather His wheat into His barn but the chaff He will burn
with unquenchable fire.”
John the Baptist and Isaiah are referring more to Jesus’ second
coming, when He comes to judge the living and the dead, than to
His first. It may strike us as frightening or even troubling that
Jesus will treat the wicked – all of those who reject Him in their
earthly lives – so ruthlessly. Why is this necessary to bring about
a kingdom of peace?
Jesus’ offer of salvation comes with the first coming. He taught,
performed miracles, and suffered, died, and rose for us to open to
us this kingdom of peace in heaven and at the end of time. But
the Father created us as persons, persons who can freely give
ourselves as a gift of love in relationship with God and each oth-
er. A large part of the seeming hiddenness of God in this life is
that, if we saw God face to face in our human weakness, we
would have no choice but to love Him and give ourselves to
Him. That is why no human being in heaven changes his or her
mind – God is too wonderful for them ever to reject Him. This is
also why the fulfilled kingdom will be eternal. Meanwhile, offer-
ing us the kingdom in the meekness of not forcing us to accept
Jesus by forcing our wills in this life preserves our freedom. We
must open our hearts to Jesus and be willing to accept Him and
His kingdom. There will be peace in the final kingdom because
all in it will be those who have freely and joyfully chosen love
and peace through Jesus Christ, and all those who did not love
peace and freely rejected it will not be part of the kingdom by
that self-same choice.
Bulletin column December 08, 2019 “From the Pastor”
In this way, Jesus respects our human freedom while also offer-
ing us the fullness of peace.
This ought to help us understand while not all people will be part
of Jesus’ kingdom, and to be at peace with that, but should more
importantly spur us to make sure that we are saying yes to Jesus’
kingdom in all aspects of our own lives. St. Paul, in our second
reading from his letter to the Romans, speaks of God being a god
of “endurance and encouragement.” God strengthens and en-
courages us to stay close to Him, to continue to live according to
Jesus’ kingdom of love with endurance. As we know, accepting
Jesus also means that we persist in consistently obeying His
commands – to love God with all of our being, to love our neigh-
bor as ourselves, to forgive, and to refrain from judging others.
Paul’s prayer is that God will help us to “think in harmony with
one another,” in a unity of agreement as to matters of faith and
morals, which means that we must accept and believe what the
Holy Spirit has taught us through the Church in these matters.
We must love people and use things, not the other way around,
and when we stumble in any of these matters, we must seek
God’s forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation. May the
God of endurance and encouragement help to keep us all in har-
mony in our journey to the fullness of the kingdom.
I want to thank all of those who chose to attend our quarterly
meeting last week. We had a good discussion on our proposal to
change the Wednesday evening Mass from English to Spanish.
We have decided in light of the discussion to postpone that move
for now. We have an idea in the hopper that may resolve our
dilemma. Please pray that we make the best decision in this mat-
ter and all decisions that concern the good of St. Michael
Church.
As announced at our Sunday Masses, the Solemnity of the Im-
maculate Conception is not a holy day of obligation this year.
Interestingly, it does not displace the Second Sunday of Advent,
which shows us the tremendous importance that the Church ac-
cords to those Sundays of preparation for Christmas. Rather, that
Sunday moves the Solemnity to Monday. While we are not go-
ing to have our usual holy day schedule, our usual Monday even-
ing Spanish Communion service will be replaced with a Spanish
Mass.
This week also brings us on Thursday the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, which is so special to our Latino community, but
really should be special to all, since she is the patroness of all of
the peoples and lands of the Americas as well as of the cause of
life. I would encourage all to check our schedule of activities for
the week and attend as many as you can. I would especially ask
everyone to plan on attending our Guadalupe Festival next Sun-
day, a special annual event into which we place a great deal of
work and preparation. Thanks to all who are giving of their time
and talent for the Festival!
As most of you all are aware, I am gone this weekend for the
Spanish-language Marriage Encounter in Bellevue. We have 21
couples scheduled to attend, and over half of them are from the
Siouxland area (most of these being our parishioners). Please
pray for the success of this event, which is a great blessing to
couples and families who really need that blessing! In the mean-
time, be assured of my prayers for all of you.

A few reminders:
1. It is very important that students arrive to school in time to pick up their breakfast, unpack their backpack and be in their seat by the 8:00 am bell. Students that

schedule appointments outside of academic time.
2. Tuition is due the 15th of every month. It is important to make your monthly payments. We have to keep up with financial responsibilities of the school also and your timely tuition payments
ensure we do. Thank you.

Unos Recordtorios:
Gracias.
