* BREAKING NEWS *

I am away this weekend attending the Ordination of Deacon Alex Boucher in Biddeford. He completed his studies at St. John’s Seminary in Massachusetts. Deacon Alex was assigned to me one summer in Houlton while he was a seminarian. I am proud of him and I thank the Holy Spirit for guiding him to the Altar.

To paraphrase St. John Mary Vianney, “God calls men today to lay down their lives so that others may have life.” The priesthood is not a career, it is a way of being. It is a life of sacrifice and service because it is the life of our Lord. No man deserves to be a priest. Like every grace, this vocation can only be accepted as an unmerited gift from God. There is no certain type of man who is called to be a priest. In fact, God calls men with different backgrounds, personalities, temperaments, and gifts to be priests. What they all share in common is the one priesthood of Jesus Christ, serving all people with the heart of Jesus.

Every ordination makes me reflect on my own journey to the priesthood. It was not an easy one, but nothing worthwhile is easy. Unlike Alex, I was what they call a ‘late vocation’. My first vocation was as a public school teacher. But like him, the call came from God through my family and dedicated priests and nuns. I was also blessed with a supportive parish community who encouraged me. Did I resist the call? Yes, for many years. Why? For the same reason as most men called; not feeling worthy enough, not feeling holy enough, not feeling smart enough etc. Sound familiar? When the Holy Spirit calls anyone to step forward in service, whether it is to serve as a lector, extraordinary minister of holy communion, usher, or catechist, most have had the same doubts. What I learned is that God calls imperfect people. A Christian blogger, Jarrid Wilson recently wrote, “I can only imagine how confused the Pharisees and religious leaders must have been while working as a team of people the Savior had gathered together.” Christianity is not reserved for the “worthy”, nor does God limit himself to the spiritually pious.

Please pray for vocations to the priesthood. Pray for our newest priest and pray for me.

An important request: I ask that everyone wishing to attend Mass on Saturday or Sunday during this time of Co-vid, to register by calling the appropriate number on Page 4 of this bulletin. Family Catechesis Starts in September!

Parish of the Precious Blood is excited to announce that we will be offering a NEW faith formation program called "Family Catechesis"

starting in September. This is a bi-monthly program that is more streamlined than previous programs and allows for flexibility to fit the

dynamics of individual families. However, we are in need of site coordinators for Holy Rosary, St. Mary's and St. Denis to be part

of a core team. You will be working with dedicated and seasoned catechists and will be given direction from our parish catechetical

leader on the lessons for each month . Gatherings will be bi-monthly and last for one hour each.

If you are interested in being part of this team and helping this program to grow, please contact Fr. Dave at 498.2536 or

Stella at 554.7086.

Gospel Meditation

The only way to know God is to love God. Our minds will never fully grasp the mystery of God, but our hearts and souls can learn to love the

mystery. Years ago, when life had a more innocent quality to it, we believed what we were told or witnessed, unless there was direct evidence

otherwise. This was especially true if the information came from someone in authority. In a sense, we were a bit more gullible on one hand but also

more trusting on the other. The latter is an admirable quality that sadly can be eroded when we realize we have been duped. With education and

technological advances, we find ourselves more skeptical and less likely to too quickly accept and believe what we see and hear. For all of the

good that social media can do, it can also easily distort reality and truth. Photoshop and a myriad other technological truths can add to, fabricate,

and make even the non-existent seem real. It is amazing. How far do we allow this obviously justifiable skepticism to take us? Questioning and

doubting are healthy elements of any good relationship as long as we don’t allow them to turn us away from a deeper experience of love and

encounter. If we cannot get our minds around something or empirically justify or prove it, we tend to declare it a hoax, untrue, or unauthentic and

walk away. The very same trust that can quickly be eroded is exactly what is essential for all of our relationships, especially our relationship with

God. With all things and people that make a profound claim on us, we have to trust in the absence of knowledge. Full self-investment involves

plunging completely into the unknown! Simon Peter said to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Peter came to this knowledge,

which is not “head knowledge” because of the relationship he shared with Jesus and what God was able to reveal in and through that relationship.

Peter simply “knew” because of love that this is who Jesus really is. The silent exchange of love between friends, and not an intellectual exercise

of the mind, brought Peter to this place. When we stop and think about it, there are many things in life that we simply know but do not completely

understand. When someone sacrifices their own well-being for another, it may not make intellectual sense when examined. But it makes a world of

sense when it is carried out. The vastness of reality and an encounter with incomprehensible mystery all lead us to profound silence where we

simply know something to be true. Have you trusted enough to allow your relationship with God to bring you to this place or are you still too

skeptical?

St. Mary’s Church in Presque Isle is in need of volunteers to ensure we can

provide access to the celebration of Mass to those in attendance at the Church

as well as to those who join us daily through livestreaming.

We need ushers to greet people and provide assistance with finding hand

sanitizing stations and seating, Saturday and Sunday. We are in need of

volunteers on Saturdays and Sundays to assist with sanitizing the church after

these masses.

We are urgently in need of people who can commit to at least one day a week;

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to livestream the Mass at

St. Mary’s to the parishioners who are unable to attend in person.

The Church Council of St. Mary’s asks for your consideration regarding these

roles. You may contact Theresa Fowler at 764-3928 or by email at

[email protected] for more information or to volunteer.

Thank you.

Greetings from the Missions Office!

As you know, we are in the middle of a global pandemic that has affected not

only those of us in the United States but our neighbors in towns and villages

around the world. As a result, we are unable to host in-person missionary

appeals in parishes this summer. Understanding, however, that the need

remains, the Diocese of Portland has decided to continue the Mission

Cooperative Plan, just in a new way.

The Society of African Missions (SMA) is a worldwide organization of Catholic

missionaries made up of priests, brothers, and laymen and women. Their more

than 1,000 missionaries hail from five continents and joyfully witness to the

Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout Africa and to people of African descent

wherever they are. They currently serve in 17 countries, both in Africa and in

other parts of the world, including the United States. The Diocese of Portland is

pleased to have two SMA priests assisting here.

If you would like to support the mission of the Society of African Missions,

please visit the Parish of the Precious Blood online giving page at the link

below.

We know the economic challenges resulting from the pandemic have made it

difficult for many to provide help at this time, but your generosity has never been

needed more. The struggles of our brothers and sisters in Christ are great, and

whatever you can give will be humbly appreciated by our missionaries and those

they serve.

Please consider a donation to your parish’s missionary group along with your

prayers for our missionaries, and may God bless you and keep you well.

Jesus, I trust in You!

Dear Fr. David Raymond,

and parishioners of the Parish of the Precious Blood, First of

all, I thank God for bringing me to the Parish of the Precious

Blood in Caribou. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to

see, learn, and experience the beauty of the culture and the

life in Northern Maine. Indeed, I have had peaceful and

happy time in this historic and cultural region. Unfortunately,

COVID-19 took away the opportunity from me to serve you

better. I pray that the pandemic will end soon so that the joy

of activities in the communities will return.

Secondly, I offer my deep thanks to Fr. David Raymond who

is the pastor of the Parish of the Precious Blood. I thank you

for welcoming me to your parish during this difficult time.

Thank you for your lessons and empathy. Thank you for your

prayers, spiritual guidance, and the encouragement that

motivated me to move forward in the priestly vocation.

Next, I thank the parishioners in each community. Somehow,

you have been praying for me and encouraging my priestly

vocation. Do you know that each one of you who I have met

is a gift that God sent to me? God is showing me His love

through you. God is teaching me through you. I owe you so

much. Please continue keeping me in your prayers, and be

assured that you are in my heart and in my prayers.

I wish Fr. David Raymond and all of you many blessings from

God and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

God bless you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Lam Vo
