Parish Articles & Insights

Looking Ahead a Few Days

to a Great Solemnity

by Fr. Walt Wainwright

Today, I will be departing from writing something

about Lent to focus on one of the great solemnities of

our faith. On this Wednesday, March 25th, the church

will celebrate the solemnity of the Annunciation of

the Lord. I hope you don’t mind but I just can’t help

letting this wondrous event of the foretelling of the

Birth of the Savior pass by without sharing some

thoughts and words about it with you.

The greatest one in the writings for this feast is the Lord Jesus, but He does not yet appear among us,

rather it is the promise of His coming because the young maiden listened to the message of the angel and with

full faith simply said, “Let it be done to me as you say.” The two other focal figures of today’s celebration

are the angel Gabriel and the maiden Mary. The meeting is truly a mystical one and one that assures that the

Savior of the world will bring to fulfillment the Father’s will.

Let us look for a moment at what this scene might have looked like. Some artists have pictured Mary as

the young maiden at prayer, others as a busy young woman making preparations for the home she would share

with Joseph once they were married, weaving cloths to be used in that home. Others have chosen to depict a

scene much more mysterious with Mary and the angel in hidden veiling. Whatever the scene that took place,

there is the wondrous proclamation by the angel Gabriel and the faith-filled response of the maiden Mary.

For us, we are given to draw what kind of scene we might depict but more than that to capture all that this

Annunciation brought to us. We can turn to Mary and consider what the great gift it was that she brought to us

by accepting the will of God to her. The mystical writer Caryll Houselander describes it beautifully in a little

work she wrote around 1945 entitled, “Lift Up Your hearts.” I would like to leave you with some of the

priceless lines she left to us in that little work.

“Our Lady gave God a human heart. She made it possible for Him, for Christ to love me.

She gave her life to be His life. She gave Him her body, what He asked for.

She gave Christ His capacity for pain. Giving Him life, she gave Him death.

She was made for Christ and then literally her life became His life.

She gave birth not only to the Christ in history, but to the Christ in all of us.

She gave her simple life to be the substance of His life in us.

Her love for Him always radiated always went out, to the whole world; always touched all sinners. When she

held Him to her heart, she took all broken sinful men to her heart.

Giving Him her life, she gave us her life. That is the great reality about her: she can truly say to Him, “I am,

that you shall have life and have it in every Christian heart!”

I hope these words give you much food for thought and reflection for your prayer on this wondrous feast

of the Annunciation of the Lord.

Fr. Walt

Reliquary in Adoration Chapel

Please welcome our new Reliquary to the Adoration Chapel on St. Casmir’s church campus. This is a

container to protect the over 200 first class relics it contains. The relics were gifted to us over ten years ago

by Mr. James Lynch. The reliquary has been at St. Joseph the healer chapel. The donor received these first

class relics from Pope John Paul II through the years when he was the lay director of the Secular Franciscans.

A relic usually consists of the physical remains of a saint or the personal effects of the saint preserved for

purposes of veneration as a tangible memorial. Relics are an important aspect of Christianity. Relic derives

for the Latin reliquiae meaning “remains.” The relics in the chapel are there to help us overcome the abstract

and make a connection with the holy. Saints do not perform miracles. Only God can provide miracles.

Come and spend some time as you visit the adoration chapel and pray. Let the saints be companions on

your journey.

Anointing of the Sick

What is Anointing of the Sick? Is it “Last Rites” or

“Extreme Unction”? When should someone receive it?

As an old car commercial used to say “it ain’t your father’s Oldsmobile anymore.” While Anointing of the Sick

(or just Anointing), Last Rites and Extreme Unction (final anointing) are all the same sacrament, our theological

understanding has changed and grown over the years.

Often, when we think of Last Rites or Extreme Unction, we think that we need to wait until someone is at the point

of death before we can call a priest and ask for the person to be anointed. In the “old days” a person who became

seriously ill rarely recovered. Not so today.

Today, modern medicine offers much more hope for recovery, so anointing is done earlier in a sickness and with

the hope of recovery. The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (note the name “of the Sick” not “of the Dying”) offers

prayers for possible physical recovery, and most importantly, for strength for the soul of the sick person.

The sacrament is rooted in the Bible in James 5:14 “Is anyone among you sick? Then they should summon the

priests of the church, and the priests should pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord…”

Who can be anointed? Anyone who is seriously ill or in danger of death, about to undergo a serious surgery, elderly

who are frail, and persons with chronic illness or disability, including mental and emotional illness. And, while the

sacrament is not meant for frequent reception, it can be received more than once if the condition worsens, or someone

has recovered and become ill again. People who have chronic conditions that are not life-threatening would be

encouraged to receive a couple times a year.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person

be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, there can be emotional and spiritual healing;

the sick person may receive the Holy Spirit’s gift of courage and/or peace to deal with the difficulties that accompany

serious illness or the frailty of old age. There is an option during the sacrament for the person to receive the Sacrament

of Penance, including, of course, absolution for any confessed sins. For those unable to go to Confession at the time,

the Sacrament of Anointing also can absolve any previously unconfessed sins which the person would have confessed.

(The Sacrament of Penance component is why only priests can validly administer the Sacrament of Anointing.)

You may see someone, surrounded by a small group of friends, anointed privately after Mass, or the priest may visit

them in their home or a medical facility. Occasionally, there is a scheduled Mass of Anointing where the anointing rite

is incorporated into the Mass. Our parish has two Masses of Anointing each year.

Regardless of the place of the sacrament, during the Anointing Rite the priest lays hands on the person’s head while

praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit. He then uses the Oil of the Sick, one of the three holy oils blessed by the

Bishop during Holy Week, and anoints the person’s forehead and palms. As with other sacramental anointings, such as

baptism and confirmation, the oil is a sign of being chosen by God.

If you are aware of a family member or friend who is seriously ill or about to undergo a serious operation, please

call the parish so that an anointing can be arranged.

Icon Retreat

April 13-17, 2020

St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel,

555 St. Joseph’s Blvd. Elmira

Iconographer: Peter Pearson,

Author of “A Brush with God”

This year we will be writing St. Michael or other

Angel Icon. The retreat is an invitation to be open to

the presence of God in the writing of the Icon. Peter

will walk us through the basic method that all icon

painters use. We will discuss technical methods and

questions, historically pertinent considerations,

theological principles and the essential role of prayer

in creating icons faithful to the canons of iconography

based upon Peter’s 50 years of the study. An Icon is

an image of a person or event taken directly from

Christian Scripture or tradition. For almost two

thousand years Christians have created images that

record the faith of those gathered around Jesus and His

followers. Painting is praying when we are doing an

icon. All you really need to do is to learn how to work

in a way that carries you toward God. Writing an icon

is a way to the Sacred. There is nothing you need to

bring; just your prayerful self to St. Joseph’s on April

13th. If interested and have questions or you want to

join us, please call Deacon George at 607-731-6170 or

email at [email protected]. I need your name

and contact information and your commitment to join

us. The cost of the retreat is $225. You may bring the

registration to the first day April 13th. Peter has been

joining us now for over ten years. There are 15 spaces

available. Register early; mail your intention to join

us to 48 Dry Run Rd. Pine City NY 14891.

with

Catholic Relief Services

(CRS) Rice Bowl

A good education allows us to pursue our dreams and

use our gifts and talents to help people in our community.

Maria Ana is an elementary school student in

Honduras where her favorite subjects are math, science,

and physical education. She dreams of becoming a

nurse. Her father, Don Cristobal, works hard and makes

sacrifices to earn money to pay for school for Maria Ana

and her two younger brothers.

The Catholic Relief Services school lunch program

provides nutritious food for Maria Ana and the other

students at the school and they are able to bring some

of the nutritious food home to share with their families.

Adequate and nutritious food is essential for children,

helping them have enough energy to learn and keeping

them healthy. Learn more about CRS Rice Bowl:

Annual Catholic Relief Services (second collection) this weekend—March 21/22

This weekend our parish will join with Catholic

parishes across the Diocese and the country to take up the

annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) collection. This

annual second collection used to be called the Bishops

Overseas Appeal and helps support the U.S. Catholic

community’s global social ministry carried out in our

name by six U.S. Catholic agencies, including Catholic

Relief Services, Catholic Migration-Refugee Services,

U.S. Bishops’ Justice, Peace and Human Development

Ministry, and the Holy Father’s Relief Fund.

These agencies touch the lives of more than

100 million brothers and sisters all over the world

annually. This annual second collection is different from

the Lenten Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl program.

The alms we contribute through Rice Bowl provide

funding for specific projects while the annual CRS

collection provides basic funding for the Catholic

agencies named above.

Thank you for your generous spirit.

Fasting Rules

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition,

Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When

fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a

full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Catholic Church

from age 14 onwards. “How to Go to Confession” materials available in all churches during Lent

Faith Formation Lenten Challenges

This month our Family Ed program is putting Jesus’ call to visit the sick and lonely into practice. Our

families have four opportunities to visit with residents at Villa Serene and Woodbrook. They are learning

about the value of companionship and compassion. It is wonderful to see them living their faith in this way.

Our Faith Formation Lenten Challenge of collecting 1000 rolls of toilet paper for our parish Food Pantry,

is proceeding with great gusto. Our toilet paper tower is growing bigger and bigger. We are making great

progress on our goal. We have great expectation of meeting or exceeding our 1000 roll challenge.

Our children are also joining in with the parish’s long-standing Lenten tradition of the Rice Bowl

collection. So they have the opportunity to contribute to a worldwide need with the Rice Bowls, while

supporting a local need through the toilet paper challenge.
