Padre Gary Zender

Dear Parishioners, For those of you wondering where would be a good place to donate money to help with Texas disaster relief beyond the typical donation sites, might I sug-gest this terrific charity? The Knights of Columbus Galveston-Houston Chap-ter is a voluntary association of Knights of Columbus parish and college councils that work together for the larger needs of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. They are the largest collection of Knights of Columbus in the State of Texas, with over 20,000 members. This Knights of Columbus Chapter has set up and is working at shelters all across Houston during this current disaster. One hundred percent of the donations you send to them will go directly to relief efforts. These relief efforts include providing immediate needs such as food, clean water, shelter and other necessities. To give online: https://www.kofc.org/un/en/secure/charities/disaster-relief.html To give by check: Make checks payable to: "Knights of Colum-bus Charities" and kindly specify "United Disaster Relief" on the memo line of your check. Mail to Knights of Columbus Charities, One Columbus Plaza, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966. We are all deeply concerned for the people whose homes and livelihoods are devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Even if you are not in a position to donate, please keep all who are affect-ed by natural disasters in your prayers.

If you wish to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Com-munion (Eucharistic Minister), or even just to review what you already know, come to the training Saturday, Sep 9, 10:30AM-noon in the main church.

At the end of the EM training will be a training session on how to best use the new automated ministry scheduling system – Ministry Scheduler Pro. If you’re an EM we’re already using MSP fully. If you’re a MOW, we currently use MSP to send you automatic reminders and make it easier for you to schedule a replacement. Finally, if you’re a sacristan, you’re going to start using MSP in the near future. If you’re interested in finding out more about how to best use the system, join the last half of the session starting about 11:15AM

Three Minute Liturgical Catechesis Article 10: Who's the Most Important?

Have you ever wondered why we sit for the first two readings at Mass but stand for the Gospel? This is one of several ways that the liturgy indicates the special significance of the portion of the Bible that is found in the four Gospels. We believe, of course, that Christ speaks to us in all the readings. Because he is the Word of God made flesh, whatever God says to us comes to us through Christ. Yet there is still something special about those four books that give us most of our information about Jesus himself. The Gospels reveal him to us, recounting his teaching and his miracles, his journeys and his encounters with people of his time, his death and his resurrection. It is in the four Gospels that we find the fullest picture of Jesus and his meaning for our lives. There are several ways that the liturgy reminds us of the preemi-nence of the Gospels. Before the Gospel is proclaimed, the deacon or priest expresses the hope that the Lord will be with us, and we respond in kind. This reminds us that the Lord is present in the Gos-pel in a special way. On special occasions, the minister will also in-cense the Lectionary or the Gospel Book to express our reverence for Christ. Many parishes use a special Book of the Gospels for this proclama-tion. Though this is not required, it is encouraged in the official docu-ments from Rome. The Gospel Book is carried in procession at the beginning of Mass and commonly placed on the altar until the time to proclaim the Gospel reading. The main expression of the Gospel's importance, however, is the Gospel procession after the second reading. Following our shared silence after that reading, we all stand and sing the Gospel acclama-tion. That music is designed to accompany the procession of the deacon or priest to the ambo for the proclamation of the Gospel. Asking for the grace to proclaim the Gospel well, the deacon receives a blessing from the priest (or if the priest will proclaim the Gospel, he bows briefly in prayer). If there is a separate Gospel Book, he carries that in procession, raising it high for all to see and acknowledge. He may be accompanied by servers with candles and with incense if that is being used. As the procession forms and moves, the whole assem-bly acclaims Christ and welcomes him in his word by singing the Alleluias (or another acclamation during Lent). All of this is intended to open our minds and hearts in a special way to the words of the Gospel. It clearly indicates that something im-portant is about to happen and that we should all be fully attentive. Of course, hearing the Gospel is only the first step. Once we have heard the words, then we have to figure out how to live them. Through the Gospel, Christ challenges us to imitate him and to walk in his ways. That's why the liturgy treats it with such solemnity and reverence.

Financial Peace University

Financial Peace University (FPU) classes begin the week of September 11. Registration is open to sign-up (http://tinyurl.com/ydhp5z8p). It’s first come, first serve on sign-ups. Classes are limited to 20 people. Even if you indicated an inter-est after Mass a couple of weeks ago, you now need to com-plete the registration process by signing up for the day and time you will attend. Classes are being offered on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings and Sunday late afternoon be-fore the 6PM Mass.

So you may wonder, “why is St. Louise offering FPU clas-ses?” The answer is really quite straightforward. God has a plan for us, even our relationship with money. This 9-week course helps couples better understand that plan and how to build it into their method of handling finances. There are lots of statistics about Americans’ level of debt and the trouble people have in making wise decisions about how to save and spend their money. This course teaches biblically sound princi-ples and provides very clear steps on how to reach your goals of financial freedom. Like any material, you have to practice, to understand and apply it. FPU connects to our parish’s strategic plan through our application of the “treasure” part of the stew-ardship triad (Time, Talent & Treasure).

One of our recent graduates is on track to be debt - free by 2018. That’s quite an accomplishment for a 9 week course. It shows that when we work with God’s plan, nothing is impossi-ble.

You can help in several ways: 1. Make an ongoing or one-time financial contribution by sign-

ing up on St. Louise Giving site – selecting St. Vincent de Paul as the recipient of your gift. You can also drop a marked envelope in the collection basket.

2. Become a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul – training is available.

3. Drop off food and personal care products in the church vestibule.

One very rainy Friday afternoon, a grandmother and the two preschool aged children who lived with her in a small RV came in seeking food assistance. We gave them two bags of nonper-ishables and a grocery card to purchase fresh milk, meat and produce. The woman was grateful to also receive directions to the New Bethlehem Center where she and the children could shower, do laundry, get assistance in finding housing from a caseworker and simply share a meal and play!

Stewardship of Treasure Commitment Renewal Annually we are invited to make a personal commitment to giving a portion of our treasure in response to God’s blessings in our lives. As of July 26 we have received: 893 pledges for 2017 (in 2016 we had a total of 922 – we

have about 2,600 registered families) $1,524,101 pledged to date for 2017, reaching 89% of our

goal of $1,715,000 (in 2016 the total amount pledged was $1,573,711)

Stewardship Reflection

September 3, 2017 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” - Matthew 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

Around the Archdiocese

Are you being called to serve others in a deeper, more meaningful way?

Our full for-mation program consists of 20 weekly classes from October-March; our “Listening Heart” pro-gram is 10 weeks, October-December; and this

year we are offering a one-day workshop in Seattle on Satur-day, September 16, called “Accompaniment.” Details can be found at www.cabriniministry.org or by calling 206-760-0583.

Climate Science, Laudato Sí and the Northwest: A Response of Faith for the Future. How are we called to care for God’s creation?

How does our faith tradition combine with the latest scientific research to suggest actions we can take? Join us for an even-ing with Jeff Renner, retired Chief Meteorologist for KING-TV and member of Mary, Queen of Peace parish. Jeff will discuss the changes he has seen in our climate, the latest science, and the compelling call of Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ to care for Earth, our common home. Thursday, September 14, 7PM, Wyckoff Auditorium, Seattle University. There is no cost for this event. Co-sponsored by Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center, Seattle University and Earth Ministry. For further infor-mation, contact [email protected].

Laudato Sí – A Mass Celebrating the Season of Creation. Pope Francis has called on

Catholics to observe the Season of Creation, from September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Crea-tion, to October 4, the Feast of St. Francis. Join us for a spe-cial Mass to Celebrate the Season of Creation, Saturday, September 30, 10:30AM, St. James Cathedral. We invite all people of faith to celebrate the joy which the Earth shares with us. Let us come together to thank God for the richness that is in the Creation which we share. Fr. Michael G. Ryan will pre-side at the Mass. A lunch and resource fair will follow. All are welcome. For further information, contact Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center, [email protected].
