Year 11 Predicted Grades We worked hard last year to improve the accuracy of our predictions. We will never get them all right, but we can probably get better. After our recent GCSE results, we have asked departments to reflect on how good they were at predicting and to amend predictions for this year accordingly. These will be reviewed again in early November. It is important that predicted grades are accurate rather than just hopeful, as a student’s plans and our interventions are all based on these predicted grades. Thus, when you receive the predicted grades on the mid-November grade sheets, they might vary from the Year 10 summer predictions. This may, of course, be as a result of a change in your son or daughter s work ethic. You will be able to discuss this with your son or daughter’s teachers at the subject review day on the 27 th November.

Parking Please could parents picking up students after school not park in the bus lane. The convention is that, on entering the car park, parents should not drive alongside the bus bay but should turn right into the second parking lane and wait there. Complaints Procedure Occasionally we receive complaints when parents feel that a matter has not been satisfactorily resolved in their discussions with a teachers or Tutor. There is a complaints procedure and a hierarchy to follow. First the complaint should be addressed to the member of staff then to the Headteacher it is not resolved, then to the Governors. We have had a few complaints sent direct to the Chair of Governors. This just caused extra work as it is sent back to me and the matter has to be explained to the parent concerned. The full complaints procedure can be found on the VLE, Parent Portal and under ‘Policies’ M F Jackman Headteacher Diary Dates

STRING ENSEMBLE – INVITATION FOR NEW MEMBERS I run a small string group in school on a Friday lunchtime at 1pm. This is a small friendly group who perform at school concerts, as a group. We would welcome more players of the violin, viola or cello to join us. If you have a son or daughter who can play one of these instruments I would be grateful if you would tell them about the group and send them in with their instrument on a Friday. There is a school cello which can be borrowed for the lunch time if any cellists would like to join us. Mrs Taylor, Violin Teacher

BATTLEFIELDS TRIP 2016 This year the History Department are organising a fantastic opportunity for Year 9 and Year 10 students from the 11th July 2016– 13th July 2016. The chance to visit World War One battlefields and memorials in France and Belgium to gain a deeper understanding of the events of one of the most important events of the 20th Century. This will build on Year 9 History lessons and link to Year 9 English lessons on Poetry. This is taking place during the centenary commemorations of World War One, a chance to reflect on the events that still have a lasting impact today, our trip will be during the Centenary of the Somme assault which took place in July 1916, an event we will be looking at closely during the trip. Many families have a link to the First World War and taking part in this trip will be a fantastic way to see and further our understanding of the conditions in which our relatives lived and fought in as well as why they fought. This is an amazing opportunity for students in year 9 and 10 and one worth considering. For further details a letter will be sent via SchoolComms, there will also be a limited number of letters that can be collected from the History Department.”

Mrs F Parkes, Assistant Headteacher Design Ventura – Live video chat with Design Museum and Editor of Design Week As part of our Year 10 Resistant Materials course we start with Design Ventura which is a National design competition led by the Design Museum and sponsored by Deutche Bank. We have done this for the past three years and the purpose of it is to encourage our Year 10 students to really start thinking like designers and to respond creatively to a real brief. Last year we had great success and the students who we entered were shortlisted into the top 10 out of over 400 entries, as a result they were invited to London for a workshop and to pitch their ideas and eventually they won the award for Sustainability. This year we were given the chance to have a live webchat with the Editor of Design Week (http://www.designweek.co.uk/) Angus Montgomery. In their teams students were able to show Angus their work and to get live feedback. The students involved really did themselves, the school and their families proud. The feedback was very positive and when Angus summed up his experience of seeing the student’s work he said: ‘Well done, you have lots of different ideas that are imaginative, creative, thoughtful and unexpected’: high praise indeed! I will be keeping a visual log of the students design journey on our department blog (https://yateleytechblog.wordpress.com/) and on our Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/DesignTech_ys ), so if you want to see how they go on to develop their ideas further then head on over! Design Ventura Club for Year 9 Are you in Year 9 and interested in having a go at this project too? Head along to BW0 Friday lunchtimes for the Design Ventura club – bring your lunch for a prompt start at 12:50.

ROCK CHALLENGE DANCE COMPETITION 2016 What is the Rock Challenge? Rock Challenge is a performing arts event involving students in primary and secondary schools and colleges around the globe. It is an opportunity to celebrate young people being their best without the use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, respecting and protecting their bodies. Yateley School has been competing in the Rock Challenge Dance Competition for ten years. Last year the team achieved winning their regional heat, winning their Southern Open Final competition and then scored enough points to go to the National Finals in June. Obviously, we were very proud when our school were crowned National Champions! This year the school will now compete in the Premier Division (no pressure then!). Audition date: The audition for Rock Challenge will take place on Saturday 17th October from 11.15am until 2.15pm. Students who wish to perform in Rock Challenge must sign up on the audition sheet next to the House Dance information. We will then allocate a time that your child will need to attend their audition. The audition will take place in the dance studio and we expect all students to be dressed in suitable dance clothing (no midriffs, shorts, baggy clothes, jewellery etc.). Rehearsals: Rehearsals for Rock Challenge will be on Thursdays (3.10-4.30/4.45pm) in the Dance Studio. Rehearsals for the team will start on Thursday 19th November (after House Dance finishes!). Nearer to the competition and showcase dates we will hold some Sunday rehearsals that we expect all students to attend. We will confirm these dates as soon as possible. Important dates: We will be showcasing our piece at Portsmouth Guildhall during the week commencing Monday 14 March 2016. At this event, the team will not be competing, but will be showcasing their piece as a premier team in an open regional heat and have the opportunity of being awarded certificates of excellence in the different categories. The date of the Premier Dance competition is Saturday 25th June 2016 at the Portsmouth Guildhall. Cost: Each year we ask students for a participation fee to take part of the Rock Challenge. This money goes towards participating at the events, helps fund travel expenses, costumes, set and props. We also encourage all team members to help fundraise throughout the year, starting with a Christmas Raffle! Other roles: Within the dance competition we will also be looking for a large number of students to be part of our stage crew, to help move set and props when the performance is shown on stage. These students must have good team working skills, be reliable and patient! Stage crew members will be expected to attend certain rehearsals. If your child is interested in being part of the stage crew they need to let their dance teacher know and I will be in touch. If you have any further queries, please contact the dance department on [email protected]

A DAY OF PRAYER What have Lego, African drums, sand, rope and ribbons got in common? Well this Saturday they are just some of the ways in which the community in Yateley is invited to come and pray for family, friends and our town. St Peter's Church is opening its doors to host a day of prayer in the Church building as part of the National Prayer Weekend. The church will be open from 10 until 4 on Saturday with a variety of prayer spaces available for people to come and explore. Each prayer space will allow people to think about something different and be creative - for example there will be a map of the town available with post-it note to stick on streets, businesses, schools and services we all use and can pray for. Lego bricks, rope and ribbons can all be used to help people think about things they would like to pray for. The event is open to everyone and includes more formal prayer and worship times at 10 and 12 noon as well as plenty of time to experience the different spaces. After the quietness of the day things get a whole lot louder with a drumming circle led by the Psalm Drummers at 3pm. This noisier approach to praying will allow people to use African Djembe drums and will ensure the day finishes on a high note. The National Prayer Weekend is taking place across the country between the 25-27 September, during which churches are joining together to pray for their community. Rev. Mike Griffiths said: "We believe that prayer changes things, on a personal, local and national level, but we also believe prayer is about saying thank you and appreciating the fantastic aspects of our community here is Yateley. We warmly invite everyone to come along this Saturday and take part in our day of prayer." For more information please contact Rev. Mike Griffiths [email protected]
