2018 Edition No 9 – Wednesday 27 th June Dear Parents, Carers and Students, The Lord listened and had pity. The Lord came to my help. For me you have changed my mourning into dancing, O Lord my God, I will thank you forever. In next weekend’s Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus restoring health and wholeness to the ‘untouchable’ woman who was shunned by society. The woman is remarkable for both her courage and for her unswerving faith that, by simply touching his clothes, Jesus would be able to heal her. The story raises two questions for us: Do we consider some in our community to be ‘untouchable’? and How strong is our faith? END OF TERM A reminder that our term is drawing rapidly to a close, with Friday, June 29 being the last day of school for Term 2. Both our students and staff have certainly earned time to recuperate and rejuvenate after such a busy term. Students return to work on Wednesday, July 18 th . I wish all members of our community a safe and fun filled break. I will be taking a few extra weeks of leave at the start of Term 3. I would like to thank Ms Sally O’Dea who is sitting in the Principal's chair until my return on August 6.  REPORTS Reports can be picked up from the Office on the afternoon of Thursday, June 28 th or Friday, 29 th June. Any remaining reports will be sent home on Friday with the eldest child in the family. If you wish to discuss your child’s report with the teacher, please ring the office and make an appointment time for next term. This allows the teacher time to focus solely on your child and your questions. SCHOOL FACEBOOK PAGES A reminder to parents and carers that the school has a private Facebook Group, and also a public page for updating the community on the good work going on at St Joseph’s. 2018 Edition No 9 – Wednesday 27th June

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

The Lord listened and had pity.

SCHOOL FEES As advised in the Newsletter each fortnight and in text messages sent recently, by this time of the year, everyone is expected to have at least made a start at paying off their fees. If you have not and you are experiencing problems meeting your commitments, you must make an appointment with our Bursar Natasha Butcher to discuss a payment plan. All fees are payable by Term 3 and may be paid off in one lump sum or in installments agreed upon with you and the School. If you have a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card (PPS) you may be entitled to a discount off your fees. To claim the discount, you must bring your current card to the Office to be copied and fill in a claim form before the end of term. KINDY 2019 If you or other family members or friends have a child ready for Kindy next year and would like them to attend St Joseph’s, please call the School Office or drop in and place their name in our Kindy 2019 list. Interviews for Kindy 2019 will be held early next term so it is important to put your child’s name down early. Children born between July 1st, 2014 and June 30th, 2015 are eligible to attend Kindy in 2019. SCHOOL ENTRANCES

For safety reasons, we would ask families not to walk their children across the corner block of Kintore and Clinch Sts, as this is now our bus driveway. We would also ask that parents and children come though the main gate on Kintore Street when entering and exiting the school grounds, or the gate at the back of the school next to the carpark. For duty of care purposes we would ask that the gate at the front of the Convent is not used for entry/exit in the mornings and afternoons as it is not supervised.

God bless,

Therese Bandy

Principal

FACTION CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL On Thursday 14th June, St Joseph’s held their annual Cross Country Carnival. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, and was great to see so many parents come to support their children. The students did themselves proud and ran their little hearts out, many crossing the finish line with nothing left in the tank! The focus for the day was doing your best, regardless of whether you are a runner or not. I believe this was evident throughout every race. The sportsmanship shown on the day was fantastic; many students either choosing to help their peers finish the race or to cheer them on from the sidelines. Congratulations to the following champions and runner-up champions on the day:

Year 1: Heath Moltoni, Tom Adams, Georgie McPherson and Keely Beard. Year 2: Oliver Lefroy, Thomas Monaghan, Libby Crombie, Sarah Tonkin. Year 3: Byron Prior, Ethan Greay, Holly Bezuidenhout, Kayla Wall. Year 4: Eddie Dodd, Gary Bezuidenhout, Molly Lewis, Bekah Upton. Year 5: Lachlan Crombie, Ashton Prior, Milla Carter, Hannah Douglas. Year 6: Darcy Cocking, Adrian Murphy, Isla Harris, Holly Butcher.

I would like to thank Mrs Bandy for her help in coordinating the fitness training this term, it has definitely paid off and the students have enjoyed the challenge. Training will continue until the end of term. I would also like to thank the parent helpers and spectators who attended, for the support and encouragement they provided to the students. Finally, we would like to wish the Interschool Cross Country Team the best of luck in Dandaragan on the 29th June. You guys will be awesome!!

Mrs Katie Monaghan

Waste Free Wednesday The Environment Ministers, Jasmine Plunkett and Murray Pienaar, have come up with a great idea on how to promote sustainability at our school. They have named it ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ and this will start in the first week of Term 3 and continue on every Wednesday for the rest of the year. Students are encouraged to pack their recess and lunches in reusable containers and bring reusable utensils to reduce the amount of waste that is discarded. Hopefully, this initiative will encourage students to bring less waste on other days as well, not just Wednesdays.

International Mud Day Friday June 29th, the last day of term 2, is International Mud Day and the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students (and staff) are looking forward to getting involved in some mud-based activities. International Mud Day aims to promote kids getting outdoors and connecting with nature. We will definitely be posting photos on SeeSaw and Facebook to show you how much fun we had!

Holiday Reading Challenge The Holiday Reading Challenge will take place in the July school holidays to encourage students to develop strong reading habits and read for enjoyment. The students have helped me with some more ideas about how we can make reading fun and there is also some free spaces for the children’s own ideas. Look out for the note that will go home this week. If you have left for holidays early, this will also be available on the school Facebook pages or at Front Reception. Year 6 Resilience and Well Being Expo On Monday 23rd July (Week2, Term 3), the Year 6 students will be attending a Resilience and Well Being Expo at the MPAC. Notes with more information about this will be going home early next term so look out for these. This forum will focus on issues such as: * Improving young people’s knowledge of the harm that drugs and alcohol can cause to self and others. * Improving knowledge about how behaviours can affect others. * Developing an understanding of the law and the consequences of criminal behaviour. * Increasing awareness of the available support networks for students in the Moora community. * Increasing awareness of wellbeing strategies. * Improving students understanding of good decision making and goal setting processes. ICT NEWS

This term, St Joseph’s students have been learning about digital systems, in particular computer systems. They

have explored peripheral devices, data types and the difference between hardware and software, and inputs

and outputs.

The senior students are investigating the binary number system and have discovered that this is how computers

transfer data. They wrote their own names in binary, decoded a secret message and created images using pixels

and represented them in a digital format (binary numbers). Try decoding the following message written in

binary:
