SPEAKER INFORMATION MEETING

Our speaker this month featured Joseph Grossman, a survivor of domestic violence as a child. His mother

was paralyzed from the neck down in a murder attempt for hire by her husband, Joseph’s father. Joseph was

then abused by his stepfather until his grandparents retired and began caring for him, his siblings and his

mother. Joseph shared how his mom, despite not being able to move at all, became proactive and formed a

foundation to help abused kids, won an award from President Bush, speaks about victims’ rights issues and

even as a paraplegic, raised 3 kids. She has also written a book now in the editing stages. And while she was

told she would only live 5-years or less, she has managed to make it to 20-years, largely because of her strong

will and determination to make something out of the tragedy she was thrust into. Joseph works on policies,

legislation and special projects for the County Attorney’s Office as his way of making a difference and firmly

believes that until every conversation regarding victims’ issues includes the voice of the victims, there will

never be true change. The system still needs to work toward humanizing their programs and services,

especially in the court process. He also expressed that it amazes him how few programs help victims with their

needs after crime changes their lives but the inmates always have access to services, and this must change. He

reminds us our stories, voices and experiences can be used to exact change and is grateful for organizations like

POMC and Arizona Voice for Crime Victims for helping victims.

We thank Joseph for sharing with us and answering questions about his journey through what life should

never be about and reminding us of hope and resiliency.

Poetic Poem Just For Today

Give me your help Lord, to live this one day.

One knot to unravel, one problem to weigh.

One path to discover and choose the right turn.

One worry to conquer; one lesson to learn.

One moment of gladness to overcome pain.

One glimpse of the sunlight, one touch of the rain.

No one can see what is coming tomorrow;

Nor tell if its hours will bring laughter or sorrow.

So I’ll turn to your love and with perfect trust say,

“Lord, give me your help to live this one day.”

Hopes and Dreams So Early Lost (Grandchild Loss)

My dear, dear grandchild,

Brought together at such a cost,

Hopes and dreams so early lost.

The moon and stars belong to you,

But I don’t know what to do.

Heaven shines your resilient love,

As I look for you above.

Wait for me by the garden gate,

I promise I won’t be late.

Our memories will be my guide,

Your bright love will be my light.

Remember, the one I adore,

Together, we’ll be once more.

(By Nana's Corner 2008)

September is National Grandparents Day. For our grandparents who lost their grandchild

we are thinking about you. Keep taking care of and being good to yourselves.

THE COURAGE TO GRIEVE (A Weekend Retreat of Hope and Healing in the Pines)

October 20 - 22 in beautiful PINE, ARIZONA

Our chapter is hosting our twenty-eighth, self-help, rewarding weekend of The Courage To

Grieve, to face the many overwhelming and difficult emotions that are the aftermath of murder and

are often compounded by the intrusion and frustration of the judicial process. Beneath the

explosive emotions of rage, hate, and revenge lay the more primary feelings of pain, fear and

helplessness. Unresolved, these emotions can cause survivors to feel they are losing their minds.

The isolation survivors feel from those who will not or cannot deal with the impact of the loss,

leave survivors alone with their grief or discourage them from grieving at all. An integral part of

this weekend will be an examination of love, tenderness and affection, relaxation techniques and

the encouragement to move forward, uncover and experience within a safe environment of others

who truly understand. The retreat has been designed to influence the reconstruction of a new life -

a life that has a renewed sense of purpose, though forever changed by murder.

The weekend begins with dinner on Friday night. Those attending will all meet at the cabin in

Pine, at 5:00 pm, with introductions to the group. This cabin was purchased by the Fornoffs

specifically for retreats; Christy Ann, Roger’s and Carol’s daughter, was killed in Tempe, in 1984,

while collecting money for her newspaper delivery route. Our chapter has hosted 28 retreats at the

Fornoff’s cabin, surrounded by the beautiful and peaceful pines.

The retreat cost is no charge to our families, as we work to obtain grant funds. Meals are home-

cooked and served family style as if you were at home. Roger is a very good cook and he loves

doing so. Space is limited to a maximum of 17, so reserve your spot now. *While no charge to

attend, we do need a deposit of $25 (per person attending). which will be refunded to you after your

participation that weekend. (check or cash, please)

Many of those who have attended the weekend retreats will tell you, though it is hard emotional

work, it is very beneficial and rewarding. Husbands and wives, siblings, all family members should

attend together and learn that while we each grieve differently and had our own relationship with

our loved ones, we all share the pain and the trauma of losing a loved one to murder.

Please sign me up for the grief retreat in Pine. Deposit - $25, check or cash)
