Official Pumpkin Race rules have been established to promote fair play and inspire creativity. Take note these rules apply to everyone: Rule #1Craft your Pumpkin Racer using a single pumpkin. Gluing to pumpkins together or using a different

object painted to be a pumpkin will not qualify! Rule #2Every entry must have two independent axels inserted through the pumpkin, with wheels attached to the axles. Other than that, you are free to express your creative flair in your pumpkin design and decorations.

Rule #3Pumpkins may not contain additional weights / concrete / rocks inside OR be attached onto any prefabricated chassis of any kind. Rule #4No propellants of any kind. Rule #5Gravity is the only allowed propellant. No pushing or

“helping” your Pumpkin Racer at the starting line with a last minute shove. Rule #6No cheater pumpkins. Any pumpkins found to be violating the rules run the risk of being pummeled to pumpkin pulp by our race officials!

By The Smith Center for the Performing Arts

Most weekdays around 2:30 p.m., students at Advanced Tech-nologies Academy can be found

fiercely focused on jamming. Some are organized in rock bands, learn-

ing electric guitar, drums, bass and vocals. Others pluck instruments for a budding acoustic section. Some pick up instruments for the first time.

Meet the members of Rock 4 Change, an after-school rock band program that’s the first of its kind in Clark County School District.

How can kids benefit from playing rock ‘n’ roll? In more ways than you know, says Rock 4 Change creator Jeff Hinton, winner of a 2017 Heart of Education Award from The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

“I’m trying to build skills that aren’t taught in the classroom. Things like lead-ership, responsibility, organization, com-munication skills,” says Hinton, also a his-tory teacher. “These skills are paramount in a band.”A New Idea

To this day, Hinton credits music with helping him through a troubled youth.

“I didn’t have a stable home life, let’s put it that way,” he says. “I immersed myself in

music. I’m a self-taught guitar player, and I never stopped.”

It eventually dawned on Hinton that playing an instrument provided more than just a distraction. It cultivated creativity and discipline, and provided a meaningful pastime to fill many difficult hours.

“I realized the importance of music edu-cation,” he says.

While joining the Marine Corps gave him the motivation to earn degrees in history and teaching, he feels that school would have meant more to him early on, if rock ‘n’ roll had somehow been part of it.

“As an adult looking back, I thought, ‘What kind of school would have grabbed me and hooked me?’” he says. “I was into rock ‘n’ roll, and that kind of program didn’t exist.”Music Meets Social Activism

He decided to change that.Creating a GoFundMe account, Hinton

raised $1,600 to purchase instruments and equipment for a rock band program. In just the first year, “it’s really taken off,” he says.

Roughly 30 kids now participate. Main-taining a student-led approach, the pro-gram focuses on teaching students instru-ments, songwriting and collaborating as a band.

“We had a couple opportunities for the

kids to play in front of the student body, and they really loved that,” he says.

Rock 4 Change is further organizing a benefit concert for Project 150, a non-profit supporting homeless and disadvan-taged students.

Hinton is also pursuing nonprofit status, to bring the program to more school cam-puses. “I didn’t just want to put instruments in kids’ hands. I want this to mean some-thing,” Hinton says. “This isn’t just changing students. It’s changing the community.”Well-Deserved Recognition

Hinton was “just floored” to be named a winner at the second annual Heart of Edu-cation Awards, recognizing outstanding teachers in Clark County School District.

He also enjoyed experiencing the red-carpet awards gala for finalists at The Smith Center. His $5,000 cash prize will help fund more instruments for his program, he adds.

“The Heart of Education Awards says, ‘I recognize teachers - that what you’re doing in your classroom really matters, the time and energy and effort,’” he says. “It’s a won-derful thing to be a part of.”Nominate a Teacher

The Smith Center will accept nominations for the next Heart of Education Awards through January 18, 2018. Nominate a teacher at www.TheHeartofEducation.org.

Think back to when you were in school. What is your fondest memory? Was it a field trip to

attend a concert or theater performance; was it playing a part in a class play, sing-ing in the choir, playing an instrument or having your work of art exhibited at school? Memories of arts experiences are often the fondest and most vivid memories of our school days. It is the mission of The Smith Center’s Education and Outreach Department to build simi-lar life-long memories by offering high-quality arts experiences for students, teachers, and the community. Student Matinee Performances

Students and teachers from public, private, and charter schools throughout southern Nevada are invited to attend mat-inee performances at The Smith Center. Throughout the school year, The Smith Center presents performances by local, regional, national, and international art-ists to inspire and engage students. Matinee performances represent a variety of arts disciplines and are specifically designed for young audiences of all ages. Support-ing curriculum related materials are sent to participating teachers to prepare students for the performances.

Through these performances, we are cultivating the next generation’s audience. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, participating schools are offered free admission to these performances.

Information about the student mati-nee performances is sent out to all CCSD schools through the School-Community Partnership Office at the beginning of each school year along with specific instructions for submitting a request to attend. Requests from schools are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis as seats are available.

Private, charter, and homeschool groups interested in attending student matinees may submit inquiries via email to [email protected] Development

The Wolf Trap Institute is an inter-nationally respected program that provides innovative arts-based teaching strategies and services to early childhood educators, through the disciplines of drama, music, and movement. Southern Nevada Wolf Trap places professional teaching artists in classroom residencies to partner with early childhood educators of children ages three to five years old.

A Southern Nevada Wolf Trap artist resi-dency is a partnership between a teaching artist and a preschool educator. Twice a week for seven weeks, the artist and educa-tor work together to provide children with developmentally appropriate arts experi-ences that are linked to early childhood learning guidelines and the curriculum. Together they create experiences that foster important skills and concepts critical to lit-eracy and long-term success in school.

Research has shown that the collabora-tive use of the performing arts techniques

“As we built The Smith Center, I was whole-heartedly set on making sure that Nevada’s young performers had an opportunity to be celebrated for their accomplishments. Last year it was magical to watch these kids blos-som from their school theater productions, to taking the stage here at the center, the home of the performing arts in Nevada, to having an opportunity to learn and perform on a theater stage in the heart of Broadway. I can’t wait to do it again.”

– Myron Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center and chairman of the advi-sory board for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards

About the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards

The Nevada High School Musical The-ater Awards is a community-wide celebra-tion that honors the future stars of the stage by recognizing students’ outstanding indi-vidual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance. Throughout the academic year, students vie for a spot to participate in the culminating competition in which the nominees perform in front of a panel of esteemed judges. To make it to the awards, participants must play a leading role in their high school production, and be rec-ommended by their respective school.

While in New York City, participants experience a five-day theatrical boot camp consisting of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with theater profes-

“When we started this project I had no idea that it would affect so many people at our school. In the beginning we started with such a diverse group, and through this pro-gram we became a family. We had some students who never missed a day of school or rehearsal and some who knew everyone’s lines. I was blown away when the students became mini superstars, and I still have new students come to me and ask about when they can join our Disney Musicals in Schools

program.” –Participating Teacher“Students who have not expressed any

interest in reading or writing are coming in early before school just to practice reading their scripts and are writing out their lines for extra practice!” –Participating Teacher

In April 2013, Disney Theatrical Group selected The Smith Center for the Perform-ing Arts as its second regional partner for Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS). A two-year $100,000 grant from Disney Citizen-ship will allow The Smith Center to offer this program in selected CCSD schools. The program is based on Disney KIDS musicals, which are written for elementary-aged students and designed to be produced in a school setting. These half-hour shows feature accessible music, ensemble casts, and classic stories of Disney.

The Smith Center’s Disney Musicals in Schools teaching artists partner with edu-cators in the selected schools to produce Disney KIDS musicals and create sustain-able theater experiences in CCSD elemen-tary schools. Together the educators and the teaching artists apply the magic of Disney to theater activities that address

imagination, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, and so many more goals of classroom learning in after-school settings. Each spring, The Smith Center selects participant schools to begin the program in the fall of the follow-ing school year. For applications or school eligibility inquiries, please contact [email protected]. Applications are made available in early spring.Camp Broadway

Camp Broadway offers summer camps, workshops, and performance opportunities to theatre-loving kids, aged 6-17. Offered in New York City and in select cities across the country, we promise that you will have an authentic, enlightening and joyous theatre arts experience taught by trained Broadway professionals. Inspired by Broadway’s cher-ished works and steeped in its grand tradi-tions, every program is designed to build confidence, inspire creative expression, and instill well-being in both aspiring artists and future audiences.

Camp Broadway Las Vegas will take place at The Smith Center, 361 Symphony Park Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89106.

By The Smith Center for the Performing Arts

Southern Nevada parents hoping to improve their children’s behavior and appreciation for reading might want to consider a trip to the theater. A University of Arkansas study reports that field trips to live theater performances — including musicals — heightens students’ literary knowledge, tolerance and empathy.

Nonprofit The Smith Center for the Per-forming Arts, Southern Nevada’s world-class performing arts center, strongly sup-ports this positive impact. The organization presents educational student matinees in its theaters to tens of thousands of students each year, at no cost to schools.

In addition, it will soon offer evening performances of three of these kid-friendly shows for families to enjoy together.

For those interested with introducing children and students to live theater, below are just a few examples of how they can benefit.A Spotlight on Reading

Many live productions, including shows

designed for young audiences, are adapted from popular books. Watching characters come alive on stage can entice children to pick up a book they haven’t tried before.

It can also help them connect with story-lines and characters on a deeper level.

The Smith Center will soon host stu-dent matinees of two musical productions adapted from the page. These include “How I Became a Pirate” based on Melinda Long‘s beloved book, and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” adapted from the classic novel by Richard and Florence Atwater.Lighthearted Learning

Who says learning can’t be fun? This especially applies when a child is removed from the traditional classroom setting and receives information through a perfor-mance on stage.

Absorbing information through creative forms such as puppetry, song, dance and storytelling allows children to experience lessons in an imaginative way, promoting engagement and retention.

The Smith Center is thrilled to present an educational student matinee in Octo-

ber that follows this very concept. Bring-ing life-size, interactive dinosaur puppets on stage, “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo” teaches children about prehistoric creatures with a show they won’t soon forget. Building Compassion

Live theater can even potentially affect children’s understanding of other people. According to the University of Arkansas’ study, hundreds of students who attended live performances scored higher in a test of students’ ability to recognize and appreciate what others think and feel.Bringing Your Children to the Theater

To help community families experience live theater together, The Smith Center will present an evening public performance of each of the student matinee shows men-tioned above.

This will kick off with a public perfor-mance of “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo” on Octo-ber 11.

For more information about these upcoming family shows and The Smith Center’s student matinee program, please visit www.TheSmithCenter.com.
