The Smith Center launches its first sensory friendly performances for audiences with sensory deficits

Being on the autism spectrum, Michael Martin takes special care when seeing a live show.

This can include bringing earplugs or sunglasses, if a performance involves strobe lights and abrasive sounds. These can impact his sensory deficits, affecting how his brain receives and responds to information through his senses.

But this hasn’t prevented Michael from developing a passion for the arts, including watching live theater.

“Michael enjoys the performing arts,” says Desirae Wingerter, program services and support manager with Grant a Gift Autism Foundation. “A lot of individuals on the spectrum have deficits in language and communication. This doesn't mean they don't want to express themselves, however, or engage in social environments.”

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Southern Nevada’s leading perform-ing arts center, advocates for making live productions accessible to all.

That includes individuals on the autism spectrum, like Michael.

That’s why for the first time ever, The Smith Center will present sensory friendly

productions this year. These are presentations of live theater

shows that provide special accommoda-tions for audiences on the autism spectrum and with other sensory deficits.

This important step for The Smith Center even includes presenting a sensory friendly performance of a highly anticipated show in its Broadway Las Vegas Series, Tony win-ning musical “The Lion King.”

“Everyone deserves to experience the joy and magic of live theater, including Broad-way productions,” says Candy Schneider, vice president of Education and Outreach. “The Smith Center considers it a high pri-ority to open up the performing arts for everyone, in an environment that is safe and welcoming.”

Creating a Comfortable EnvironmentSensory friendly performances involve

a number of unique elements, Schneider says.

These include lowering sound and light levels, organizing designated quiet areas for guests who need breaks during the show, and providing specially trained staff.

Melanie Jupp, Education and Outreach program manager at The Smith Center, is leading efforts to coordinate community organizations on these many factors.

“I’m consulting with autism organiza-

tions across Southern Nevada on the best approach to sensory friendly shows,” Jupp says. “We are taking into account every detail to provide the best guest experience for all.”

From Shh to a Lion’s RoarFamilies can look forward to The Smith

Center’s first show to include a sensory friendly performance, the family produc-tion “Shh, We Have a Plan” on April 21.

A completely nonverbal show featur-ing magic, music and puppetry, this pro-duction by acclaimed theater company Cahoots NI from Northern Ireland is spe-cially designed for young audiences.

It has often been performed for families seeking sensory friendly experiences.

“Audience members with sensory deficits can enjoy this with their entire families,” Schneider says.

Schneider expects many families to make memories together at the sensory friendly performance of “The Lion King” this November.

“I can’t think of a more thrilling show that people of all ages will truly enjoy,” Schnei-der says. “It makes a memorable start to what I hope will become more opportu-nities to offer sensory friendly shows of highly acclaimed productions, when they are available.”

National Infant Immunization Week is April21-28, 2018By Dr. Joe Iser, Chief Health Officer, Southern Nevada Health District

Each year, the Southern Nevada Health District joins with its local, state, and federal partners to

highlight the importance of protecting infants and children from vaccine-pre-ventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements immunization programs have made in promoting healthier com-munities. Since 1994, National Infant Immunization Week has been a time to celebrate the critical role vaccination has played in protecting our children, families, and communities.

As parents, you want to do what is best for your children. You research the best car seats, baby gates, and the most up-to-date health information. These are measures that are important for protecting your chil-dren. However, ensuring your children’s vaccinations are up-to-date is one of the best ways to protect them and keep them healthy. Here are five important reasons to vaccinate your children:

1. Immunizations can save your child’s life. Some vaccine-preventable diseases that once caused serious long-term health issues or killed thousands of children are no longer common in the United States – primarily due to safe and effective vac-cines. Polio is one example of the positive impact that vaccines have had in our coun-try. Polio was once one of the most feared

diseases, causing death and paralysis across the country, but thanks to vaccination the U.S. has been polio-free since 1979. Inter-national vaccination efforts have helped eradicate wild poliovirus from all but a few areas of the world today.

2. Vaccination is very safe and effective. All vaccines that are given to children are carefully reviewed by scientists, doctors, and health care professionals. Serious side effects following vaccination, such as severe allergic reactions, are very rare. The disease-prevention benefits of getting vac-cinated are much greater than the possible side effects for almost all children.

3. Immunizations protect others you care about. Vaccine-preventable diseases still exist and circulate in the United States, and we are experiencing a resurgence of some viruses such as measles and whoop-ing cough (pertussis). When babies are too young to be vaccinated, or children cannot be vaccinated because of certain medical conditions, they are protected when those around them are appropriately vaccinated against these diseases. We call this “herd immunity.” To protect those most at-risk, it is important that you and your children who are able to get vaccinated are fully immunized.

4. Immunizations can save you time and money. If a child becomes ill with a vaccine-preventable disease, he or she can be excluded from school or day care until there is no longer a risk for infecting others. More importantly, some vaccine

preventable diseases can result in pro-longed disabilities that lead to lost time at work, medical bills, or long-term disabil-ity care. Getting vaccinated is a long-term investment in the health of your children, your family, and your community.

5. Immunization protects the future. Vaccines have reduced diseases and in some cases eliminated diseases that killed or severely disabled people. Today, children in the United States are vaccinated against rubella (German measles), dramatically reducing the risk that pregnant women will acquire the virus. Birth defects associ-ated with this virus are now seen in only rare cases in this country when a pregnant woman who was never vaccinated against rubella is exposed to someone who con-tracted it in another country.

This is not an exhaustive list of the rea-sons why you should protect your children by making sure they are appropriately immunized. We are making it an easy and fun occasion for the whole family by join-ing with our partners to once again host this year’s Baby Bash Immunizations and Health Fair. The event is Friday, April 27 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., at our main loca-tion at 280 S. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89107. Admission to the event is free. There will be family resources, free or low-cost immunizations for eligible infants, toys, clothes, and raffle prizes for families in attendance. For more information go to the Health District website at www.SNHD.info/niiw.

Arrr! Can you feel the ocean spray in your face? Can you smell the salt air? No?? Well can you see Pirates at Craig Ranch Park! That’s right, it’s that time of year! Pirate

Fest returns April 21st and 22nd. We covered this fun and unique family friendly festival last year. If you missed it, now is your chance to experience it for yourself!

Pirate Fest is a family friendly themed festival that is based on its own Legend! How else can you explain Pirates in the Desert? Maybe the puppets know! New this year, the Las Vegas Family Puppet Theater will present puppet shows depicting the Legend! This will explain why there is pirates, faeries even mermaids here in the middle of the desert!

What makes Pirate Fest so fun and unique is summed up in its motto, “Don’t just watch the pirates…BE the Pirate!” This is a festival where you are invited to “do”! You are involved the minute you cross through the portal and enter the Pirate Realm! Your first stop you receive a Treasure Map and get a Pirate Name! Bobby and Mary are on the outside, here you may be Barnacle Jack and Salty Dog!!

The Treasure Map has red X’s on it. You must follow the map and find the Red X’s. At each, you must accomplish tasks. Every-thing from walking a plank to swabbing the deck to making a piece of rope. Complete the tasks and you get a Letter of Marque becoming a “real” pirate and of course you plunder “pirate booty”! (while supplies last!)

Pirate Fest has everything you would expect of a fun family fair. There are vendors, entertainment, activities and games. The ven-dors are mainly craft style artisans and there is a great variety of some of the best displaying here. You may never see some of them outside Pirate Fest! Such is the case with the games.

The games at Pirate Fest are activity oriented, you must DO something. The games were all handcrafted specifically for them. A couple of the games were even invented by Pirate Fest, so you won’t see them anywhere else! The kids can play the games, devel-oping a few skills in the process, collecting doubloons for their successful play. Amass a pirate’s booty of these doubloons and you can redeem them for prizes and treasure!

The Pirates of the Sea Monkeys also make Pirate Fest their favorite port. They provide several reading opportunities through-out Pirate Fest. This band of pirates has visited many of the valley schools providing assemblies to showcase the importance of read-ing! All decked out in their finest pirate garb, they work with the kids, acting out the stories they present. See even pirates think reading is cool!!

Speaking of garb this brings us to another feature of Pirate Fest over other festivals. You are encouraged to immerse yourself, dressing up like one of the many characters you can find here. There are pirates, steampunk, fairies, renaissance even mermaids at Pirate Fest! But you say you don’t have a pirate outfit! Not to worry, pirates are one of the easiest costumes to create. There is a whole section on their website to assist you. Many people already have a pirate costume stored somewhere in a back closet. If not, a quick rummage through that closet with maybe a trip to a local second-hand clothing store will reveal an abundance of pirate pos-sibilities. It is fun to look around the park and see so many families get into the “pirate spirit”.

While Pirate Fest is very family friendly, it features a lot of fun and activity for the adult pirates too! Many people do not know that Las Vegas is actually the home of Sail Windjammer Tours! They provide cruises through the Caribbean on a real Tall Ship the SV Mandalay. With only 50 passengers on board you get very special treatment and get to go places no big cruise ship has ever ventured. You can qualify to win a trip for TWO with Sail Wind-jammer!! You can qualify through their sponsors or register at the Sail Windjammer booth at Pirate Fest. Qualifiers will be picked and on Sunday one of those will be the winner!

New this year is a special Whiskey and Rum Tasting Event. Pirate Fest will be visited by Master Mixologist Bobby Gleason from Jim Beam. You can pay for a class where you will sample and be taught about the differences in whiskies. There will no doubt be a rum in there somewhere….pirate! All proceeds from the Tasting will go to the local charity Paradise Ranch Foundation. So, you are only tasting to help the charity!!

Paradise Ranch Foundation is a wonderful local charity that works with mentally challenged kids and adults through programs that utilize horses and other animals. Paradise Ranch has been participating in Pirate Fest since its inception. They bring out some of the animals and horses so the kids and see them up close. They are but one the few select organizations that exhibit here.

Pirate Fest Invades Craig Ranch!

They too like the fact that at Pirate Fest is based on involvement! It is something that must be experienced.

Pirate Fest is a totally immersive experience. You walk through the façade and you are magically transported into their pirate/faerie realm. You have a funnel cake, grab a beer (or a rum) perhaps kettle corn for the kids, watch the puppet show, meet a mermaid, maybe dance a pirate jig and forget about the world outside the realm. Maybe just for today, you are off the couch, out of the house and doing something unique. As their motto states, “Don’t just watch the pirates….BE the Pirate!” For this day, you are out of the ordinary. Today, you and your family ARRRRR the Pirates!!!

Pirate Fest is at Craig Ranch Regional Park. Dates are: Saturday April 21-10am to 8pm and Sunday April 22-10am to 8pm. Pricing is variable. Adults $15 per day. Kids, Seniors (65 and older) and Service personnel (active and retires w/ID) $10 per day. Kids that are 5 years or younger...bonus you are free with a paid adult! Discounts are available through Smith’s Food & Drug, Green Valley Gro-cers and Sonic Restaurants.
