Chloride and Trophic Status Index (TSI) are two of the parameters measured that have fluctuated in recent years. Shown below, chloride in Paradise Lake has essentially doubled, which is relatively consistent with other lakes in the region. Sources of the increased chloride could be from natural erosion, but the increase is likely from road salt application during the winter. When in water, the most common salt application on roads and in municipalities (sodium chloride, NaCl) breaks down in to sodium (Na + ) and chloride (Cl - ) ions. There does not appear to be immediate harm of increased chloride levels. However, chloride can be an early indicator of changes in the lake ecosystem. Trophic status index (TSI) is a measure to describe the biological productivity in a lake at the time of measurement. TSI takes into account water clarity and chlorophyll-a concentration, the base of the food chain in a lake. TSI values range from 0 to 100: Below 38 = Oligotrophic, very clear water, very low nutrients and productivity 39 to 49 = Mesotrophic, good water quality, moderate productivity 50 and greater = Eutrophic, relatively poor water quality, high productivity (increased algal growth). When in water, the most common salt application on roads and in municipalities (sodium chloride, NaCl) breaks down in to sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-) ions.

Paradise Lake is historically and in 2017 still in the mesotrophic category .

PARADISE LAKE “ICE-OUT”

Starting March 1st, register your 2017 official “Ice-Out” guess at the Carp Lake Post Office or on the PLA

website www.paradiselakeassociation.org. The definition of “Ice-Out” by PLA rules is “all large pieces of ice

gone from all parts of the lake”. Just a little bit of fun in Carp Lake in the winter. Put your scientific skills to

work and win FAME if you are correct. Maybe you can convince spring to come a little sooner!!

SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED BY THE PLA The annual scholarship offered to graduating seniors from Mackinaw City and Pellston Schools and those Carp Lake Township resident seniors attending other schools, has been increased to $1000. The restriction of environmental studies only to receive the scholarship has also been changed to all fields of study covered, with extra consideration given to those in environmental and water quality fields. An application is contained in this newsletter on page 6. Visit the PLA website: paradiselakeassociation.org for instructions on filling the form and additional attachments required. LOOSESTRIFE BEETLES Your PLA board has voted to purchase and release 105 Loosestrife Beetles next summer on Sommers Road between the gravel pit and the shore of our lake. These control insects have been extremely successful containing the Purple Loosestrife plants. 2016 was limited to only a half dozen flower heads which were picked and destroyed because each head can contain 5000 seeds to form more plants. 2017 there were a few more, thus the board’s decision to add more beetles. If the plants reach a lake front they can be much harder to control. The goal is to keep them away from the lake. If you see pretty purple flowers along Sommers Road in late summer, DO NOT transplant them!! The purchase source is through Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. “MEET MACKINAW” The PLA has partnered with the Mackinaw Chamber in a new program called “Meet Mackinaw”. It is a way for the chamber to promote and recognize non-profit organizations in their area. They will be promoting the breakfast and parade for our summer festival “A Summer Day in Paradise”. PLA FACEBOOK PAGE A Facebook page for the PLA has been created and will be maintained by Maddie Michaels. It has been created primarily for announcement and promotion of PLA activities and events. Find us on Facebook. In the search area of your Facebook page type: “Paradise Lake Association of Carp Lake”. PLA WEBSITE

The PLA website is www.paradiselakeassociation.org. Visit there for updated information about our lake and

community. There are a number of beautiful photos submitted by PLA members. If you have photos you

would like to share, send to [email protected].

CHRISTMAS BASKET DISTRIBUTION

The PLA used donations and PLA funds to make up four “Welcome” baskets, one “Thinking of You” and one

food basket for area residents who were thought to need a little extra cheer this Christmas season. Thanks to

Annie Coffin, Cathy Freebairn, Terry Burge and Greg Torsky for filling and delivering the baskets. Also many

thanks to those who donated money and non-perishable food items to make the project possible.

WORKING TOGETHER TO PROTECT WILDLIFE AND SAVE LIVES

In 2017, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council prevented approximately 7,800 pounds

of unwanted and unused medications and personal care products from ending up in

our precious waterways. Nine community collection events held in the counties of

Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet properly disposed of more than 700

pounds from approximately 300 participants and more than 7,000 pounds were

collected at permanent drop-off boxes located at law enforcement offices

throughout Northern Michigan. This is the most we have collected in any year since

the POD program began back in 2008. In total, almost 35,000 pounds (over 17 tons)

of medications have been properly destroyed since 2008!

Editor note: Local POD drop off sites include: Mackinaw City Police Department, Harbor

Springs Police Department, Cheboygan Department of Public Safety, Cheboygan County

Sheriff, Petoskey Department of Public safety, and Emmet County Sheriff Department.
