Welcome from the Camp Manager

Thank you for choosing the City of Berkeley Echo Lake Camp for your summer camp experience! You’re giving yourself and your campers a wonderful gift- the opportunity to experience the natural world, make new meaningful friendships and rediscover yourself in a beautiful High Sierra environment. We are looking forward to a safe and fun summer that brings you great experiences and wonderful memories. Just think of it…no cooking, cleaning or shopping…just time to enjoy the peaceful, beautiful mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and pine scented air. We are looking forward to our upcoming week of fun! Our 50 & Better Camp programs take place at the tail end of our summer program season, and many of our staff will have departed back to their academic studies. For that reason, most of the activities during 50 & Better Camp are camper led and based on the activities of campers. Likewise, our staff truly appreciate the support our 50 & Better Campers provide by assisting with dining hall cleanup after meals, and helping ensure our facility is clean and orderly. If you have activities you would like to lead, or ideas about how to make 50 & Better Camp even better, contact Joan Adams at [email protected].

For registration questions, please contact the City of Berkeley Recreation offices at (510) 981-5140 or [email protected]. I am available via phone at our City of Berkeley Offices at (510) 981-6642. Once our camp season begins in early June, you can reach me at (530) 659-7539. At any point, you can reach me by Cell: 510-292-8123 or via e-mail at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces at camp this year, and to meeting some new friends. I hope this guide serves as a useful tool in preparing you for your camp experience. For more information about Echo Lake Camp, you can visit our website: Echo Lake Camp Website Kind Regards,

General 50 & Better Camp Information:

Do you want to keep your boots in your suitcase, completely relax, enjoy a good book or just be by yourself? We invite you to do exactly as you please during your stay at camp. We are certain you are going to have a wonderful time.

Most activities at 50 & Better Camp are camper led. Before camp, please make a note of any activities you would like to lead on the volunteer activity sign-up sheet provided at registration. Check the Activity Board (outside the Dining Hall) for announcements and schedules of planned camper-led activities. Activities will be announced at meals, and additional information may be posted in the Dining Hall.

Meals are served at: 8:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 6:30 PM. The Dining Hall is open 24/7, and will always have fresh fruit, bread, peanut butter and jelly, hot coffee and tea available. Some campers may wish to bring along additional snacks and food items. Bear proof Bear Boxes are available throughout the camp property. Small amounts of ice (to cool beverages, ice bags for injuries, etc.) will be available at the Dining Hall upon request however, large amounts of ice (fill coolers, etc.) may be purchased from the Echo Lake Chalet just a 15 minute walk from camp.

If you are planning to leave camp for hiking or out of camp excursions, please notify the kitchen staff on the bag lunch sign-up sheet. Lunch fixings will be set out before breakfast (~8:00 AM) in the Dining Hall area each morning. Pack a lunch and mark it with your name. Think green! Although paper bags, Ziplock baggies, and paper napkins will be made available, we recommend bringing along a plastic sandwich container, a cloth napkin and lunch bag to help reduce waste if you plan to leave camp regularly.

o If you want to leave camp early (before 8:00) in the morning, check with the Kitchen staff about preparing a lunch for you. If you choose, you can bag up some dinner left-overs for lunch the next day. There is also peanut butter & jelly for sandwiches, cereal, milk, fruit, coffee and tea available at all hours.

On the first and last evening of each session at 5:45 PM, Echo Lake Camp Staff will host a SOCIAL HOUR. Light Refreshments and Hors d’oeuvres and punch will be provided. Meet on the Observation Deck.

Echo Lake Camp is frequently visited by bears. Do not keep food in your tent or car. We have had car break-ins at camp. The camp recommends that you store food products in the bear food storage lockers located throughout camp. Please label your belongings.

If you have medication that needs to be refrigerated, please let Echo Lake Camp staff know. We will store it in a safe location for you.

Important! Echo Lake Camp is located at 7,450 ft. elevation! During your stay at camp, it is important to stay hydrated. Some campers may notice mild fatigue, headaches, and dehydration. In addition, the sun is more intense at this elevation. Please plan accordingly. Take extra water bottles on your hikes, pack sunscreen, and pace yourself.

Out of camp adventures abound! See the separate attachments for additional information on regional golf courses (check in with our office for special discounts at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course), Lake Tahoe’s many sandy beaches, Desolation Wilderness and hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and rentals. There are several special events taking place within the Lake Tahoe Basin over the course of the week, including the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and the Tahoe Music Festival. The health and safety of our campers is of primary concern. To ensure our camp health care providers have the information necessary in advance, please contact our camp office if you have any special medical needs or have any notable concerns that might impact your stay at camp. Illness and Accidents Echo Lake Camp employs Camp Medical Staff who will be on-site during your stay at camp. They will always be available via phone or radio. Our Medical Staff will be available 24 hours a day in case of emergency. In addition to our on-site medical staff, most of our staff hold CPR and First Aid certifications. If medical treatment beyond first-aid is required, staff will make every effort to ensure appropriate care is provided, and emergency services are contacted as needed. In case of illness onset at camp, our camp’s health hut has limited capacity to keep campers in extended isolation. In our experience, campers recovering from medical conditions feel more comfortable recuperating at home. In such situations, the camp staff may help campers make arrangements for early departure.

General Camp Information

Environment and Weather Echo Lake Camp is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at around 7,400 ft. elevation; such elevation can have an effect on the body. High altitude means thinner air, which could lead to shortness of breath and dehydration. Please be aware of the physiological effects altitude may have on you during your stay, and ensure you are consistently drinking water and taking care of your body. As camp is located in the High Sierras, weather changes occur quickly. During the day, temperatures range from 70 to 80 degrees, dropping to the low 50s at night. The sun is stronger at higher altitude and the wind picks up quick. Rain and thunderstorms can occur at camp, and mosquitoes are present during dawn and dusk. Make sure to pack sunscreen, bug repellent, and rainwear. You can find a more in depth packing list at the end of this packet.
