NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Train for

“Ever-Changing Times”

Many of us received our training decades ago but the message of training for the unexpected prevails

in our nursing process, thoughts and actions. 2015 will find health care reaching the final phases in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (“Continuing to Implement the ACA in a Careful, Thoughtful Manner,” n.d.). The ACA has brought about many changes within the structure of health care. Surgical centers, “minute clinics”, paramedics making home visit (“Community Paramedic Program,” n.d.), telemedicine and electronic health records allowing integration of hospital information; although these changes have been identified to assist in the promotion of health care equality, they have come with a price, leading to layoffs and restructuring of medical care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) study of health care quality resulted in the report Crossing the Quality Chasm and resulting recommendations to health care organizations, including support of nursing education and promoting patient centered care. As nursing professionals, it is imperative to stay in alignment with these visions in educational change in nursing and health care. Five identified areas of education are in patient-centered care, work in interdisciplinary teams, evidence based practice, quality improvement and informatics (“Crossing the Quality Chasm: The IOM Health Care Quality Initiative - Institute of Medicine,” n.d.). MNDAKSPAN’s commitment to component members is actively demonstrated through support of these recommendations. Maintaining and refreshing website information, providing biannual education including research and informatics, use of social media, and providing scholarships to allow members to attend conferences, along with providing financial assistance supporting research. MNDAKSPAN’s Board of Directors continues to support the mission to provide quality education and offer opportunities for professional growth. Conference Report Spring 2015

“Ever Changing Times” was the theme for the spring conference held February 27 and 28, 2015 in Bloomington,

Minnesota at the Ramada Mall of America. Even though it was still winter, we designate it as our spring conference,

following a tradition of having a spring and fall conference every year. The theme reflects that we live and work in a fast

paced world of continuous change where there is often not enough time in a day.

Outstanding volunteers make our conferences possible. The committee chair was Wanda Osland. She was assisted by

Ann Foran, Theresa Vest, Sarah Jerabek, Michelle Sears, and Robyn Avery. Melanie Polansky volunteered to be the

emcee for both days and did a fantastic job introducing the speakers and announcing the day’s events. The committee

arranged several unique door prizes, and random attendees won prizes to help them adapt to “Ever Changing Times.”

Thank you to the committee members for sharing your precious time with us!

The Friday session was designed for the nurse new to perianesthesia, someone considering certification, or someone

looking for a general review of perianesthesia nursing. The day began with Jason Heuer, CRNA, from Abbott-

Northwestern in Minneapolis. Time to Sleep – Anesthesia Review was an overview of the medications and care of the

surgical patient, during the anesthesia phase. He reminded us that individual, cultural, environmental and genetic

factors influence every patient. Time to Think – PACU Challenges, by Julie Oppold, discussed some of the challenges in

caring for pediatric, older adult patients and chronic pain patients. Great comments and questions generated lively

discussion.

MNDAKSPAN president Ruth Novack presented Time to Act – PACU Emergencies, a review of some of the emergencies

we may encounter such as malignant hyperthermia, airway issues, cardiovascular emergencies, lipid rescue and stroke.

She added some humor and one question she posed was, “Is guppy breathing a medical term?” Our last speaker of the

day was Kristin Siepkes, RN, BAN, PCCN, CPAN presenting Time to Study – Becoming a Proficient Perianesthesia Nurse.

Kristin works at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Kristin discussed various ways to study and become a

skilled perianesthesia nurse. Kristin recently certified as CPAN and she shared some of the study plans she found helpful.

She also discussed some of the resources available through ABPANC.

This no-cost Friday conference was a new option offered by MNDAKSPAN. 122 people attended. With the positive

response, we are planning to offer it again next year, although a nominal fee will be added to defray a few of the costs.


Saturday morning our clocks were set for an early start. We enjoyed a hot breakfast buffet and social time before the

speakers started. Generous meals, beverages and snacks were served in an adjacent conference room with large

windows and plenty of sunshine. Thank you to the very attentive hotel staff. Various vendors were present and

attendees were able to visit with them before the conference and during breaks. The Saturday conference attendance

was 180.

Our conference service project was Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative. They partner with congregations in the

Twin Cities metropolitan area to end homelessness through housing, shelter and public advocacy. Thank you to

everyone who made a cash donation. The contribution amount was $505.

The first speaker was Adam English, RN, BSN, and soon to be DNP. He is the Orthopedic Joint Coordinator for Cuyuna

Regional Medical Center in Crosby, MN. Adam discussed Rapid Recovery in Total Joint Replacement. Joint replacements

have progressed from long painful hospital stays to short stays with improved multi-modal pain control. He said the

most common question asked by the total joint patients is “when can I return to work?” The one-year marker should

reflect improved mobility, comfort, confidence and competence.

Faith Pollock, APRN, BSN, CNS, CDE, presented Diabetes Management: Different Treatments for Different Times. Faith is

the Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Abbott Northwestern. She reminded us that pre-diabetic patients are often at

greater risk of high blood sugars post op than the people who are known diabetics. She reviewed the wide variety of

oral diabetic medications and challenged us to be familiar with the names of those drugs during the preop interview.

“Inhaled insulin is coming to a market near you”--a glimpse of the future. She gave an overview of insulin pumps and

reminded us to tell the patient to bring extra supplies with them, due to the wide variety of pumps.

Advances in Bariatric Care was the title for Jonathon Gipson, MD, FACS. He is a partner at Specialists in General Surgery

in Maple Grove. His surgical practice incorporates minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of general surgical

diseases, with a special focus on weight loss operations and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. He reminded us to be

sensitive to the bariatric patient, and noted that it is the one disease that “is still okay in the eyes of many to be

judgmental”. It is a disease process afflicting the lives of many. ” Surgery is a tool, along with a diet and exercise

program, that improves the health of an individual struggling with obesity.

Patient Care in Vascular and Interventional Radiology was the next presentation. Dr. Maria Gomes works with

Minneapolis Radiology Associates at North Memorial Medical Center. She is a well-known and respected researcher. Dr.

Gomes gave us an overview of some of the common procedures done in interventional radiology. “Interventional

radiologists are pioneers of many of the common procedures done in medicine today. We are basically plumbers and

your health is all about the pipes.” One of the newest innovations is the ability to remove a large vessel DVT without

using a continuous TPA drip.

Announcements were made throughout the day:

Newly elected board members--Robert Davidson, Director of Publication and Peggy Forstner, Secretary. Deb

Moengen was introduced as the new vice president/president elect. Deb has been serving as the MNDAKSPAN

secretary.

Thank you to outgoing board members Karissa Brinkman and Mary Briggs.

The winner of the national conference for 2016 was Kay Carlsrud. Winner of a free MNDAKSPAN conference

was Jill Thurston. The winner of a free ASPAN membership was Ellen Douville.

A special presentation was made to the winners of the ICPAN (International Conference of PeriAnesthesia

Nursing) scholarship. Darin Prescott and Mary Esser Olson were the first recipients of this MNDAKSPAN award.


After lunch, we heard Doris Nordbye, RN, MA present Infection Control in Perianesthesia. Doris is the Infection

Preventionist at Abbott Northwestern. She serves as the clinical resource for infection control. She discussed some of

the common infectious organisms we seeing in our facilities. Doris focused on some the most important issues related to

perianesthesia patients. She stated that patients need to follow the preop instructions and urged us to remind the

physicians to reinforce the preop teaching that will take place. “Listen to everything the RN tells you to do in preparation

for surgery in order to prevent a surgical infection.” She predicts that in the future there will be showers in the preop

areas and weight-based antibiotics.

Stephanie Gingerich RN, BSN, B-C and Sasha Sakurets RN, BSN presented Smoother Transitions for Improved Care.

They work together at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. They described some unique details of their

new facility and the planning that went into those details to provide an exceptional experience for their patients.

Stephanie and Sasha wondered, “What are we doing to make their nursing care exceptional? Can we improve our work

flow?” They gave the example of a “broken clock” that was on the wall. All the staff knew it was broken and were used

to it. It was mentioned that the families would notice and wonder why a broken clock hung there. What about the other

things that were broken and needed repair? They collaborated with the pediatric postop units to develop a team to

improve communication and work flow. “Small changes go a long way” they discovered. “Never lose the focus that it is

all about the patient.” A similar process was implemented in their adult units. Stephanie and Sasha shared several

examples of successful transitions for improved care.

The day closed with Dr. Cory Martin and Leading in Challenging Times. He is a family practice physician at Allina –

Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo, Minnesota. He is a physician leadership development speaker, specialized in adaptive

leadership training. Dr. Martin shared several inspiring videos. He reminded us that we are ALL leaders in our work. ALL

of us can influence people around us. Adaptive leadership is the model for future leadership development in healthcare.

“We always need more than one viewpoint; somewhere in the middle is the right answer.” Dr. Martin challenged us to

share positive strength that will touch the lives of our patients, coworkers and families.

We want to express a sincere thank you to those who attended our “Ever Changing Times” conference. Thank you for

giving us your valuable time to network with other perianesthesia nurses.

In other education news, plan now to attend the fall conference. “Elevating Healthcare to a New Level” will be held in

Duluth, Minnesota on September 26, 2015. The conference will be held at The Inn on Lake Superior. ASPAN speaker

Kim Noble has accepted an invitation to speak for us. We look forward to welcoming her to our region.

The spring 2016 conference is tentatively being planned for the last weekend in February. Feel free to contact me if you

MNDAKSPAN Certification Report

January 2, 2015--I have spent most of this second day of the New Year working on the MNDAKSPAN Shining star

application for 2014 and it has given me a chance to see how our component has done in the past year. Our

Membership is down a small amount so we hope you all will continue reading about and participating in the advantages

of being a MNDAKSPAN member.

Our percentage of the component that is certified has risen from 62 to 66 percent. In the time that I have been keeping

track of these statistics, I have also noticed we have had a significant increase in members of our component who hold

dual certifications in Peri anesthesia. We currently have nineteen. That, of course, is not to slight our members who are

certified in other areas including CEN and CCRN.

We have two certification coaches, Rosanne Johnson and me, who would be happy to work with you to develop a plan

for certification. There is information on certification on the MNDAKSPAN website, in each of our quarterly newsletters,

and on the ABPANC web site. I also have a table at each of the MNDAKSPAN conferences which shows our newly

certified members. I would love to talk to any of you and answer questions. I would also like to meet and congratulate

those brave people who have taken both tests at the same time!

MNDAKSPAN offers two conferences a year one in spring, usually in the Minneapolis area and one out in the state or in

North or South Dakota in the fall. Each offers about seven contact hours and provides a great opportunity for our

members to network.

We celebrate Certified Nurses Day March 19 with a drawing at the conference of CPAN/CAPA merchandise. I look

forward to seeing you there!

Component Excellence Award

ICPAN Award Winners to attend International Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark

In her tenure as president, Karissa Brinkman set a goal for MNDAKSPAN to achieve the ASPAN Gold Leaf Award, because

the award helps component boards to focus their efforts on improving their service to the membership, especially in the

areas of education, certification, and research. One of the elements of the Gold Leaf application process is to encourage

and support excellence in perianesthesia nursing and participation in the work of the component. Karissa championed

and shepherded this cause through the board, with the result of the first Component Excellence Award*, given on

February 28, 2015 to two active and deserving MNDAKSPAN members, Darin Prescott and Mary Esser Olson. This award

supports attendance at the International Conference of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ICPAN), which will be held in

September 2015 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Mary Esser Olson, RN, is a longtime active member of MNDAKSPAN who has served 4 two-year terms on the Board of

Directors (2 terms in the former position of Public Relations, and 2 recent terms as Director of Governmental Affairs).

Mary has been a recurrent conference organizer and planner for several of our MNDAKSPAN Spring conferences with

her PACU colleagues from Gillette Children’s Hospital.

Darin Prescott, RN, MSN, MBA, CNOR, CASC, has presented at MNDAKSPAN conferences on 2 occasions (on the topics

of patient positioning and evidence based research), and has been a conference planning member. Darin works at the

Lower Sioux Indian Community in Morton, MN as Director/CEO of Health, Social Service and Clinic; and at the Mayo

Clinic Health System in New Prague, MN as a staff RN.

Congratulations to these award winners, who have both expressed gratitude for this recognition and opportunity.

Our current president, Ruth Novack, continues to lead the substantial efforts required to achieve the Gold Leaf Award.

The Component Excellence Award represents just one element of the Gold Leaf application process.

The recipient of this award will be announced at the MNDAKSPAN 2015 Spring Conference and every Spring Conference

biennially thereafter. MNDAKSPAN will evaluate the expenses (conference registration and hotel fees, coach airfare)

involved on a biennial basis to attend the International Conference of PeriAnesthesia Nurses and reimbursement for

conference registration fees, hotel costs, and coach airfare will be granted based upon MNDAKSPAN’s current financial

status and budget for that year. The Component Excellence Award application and information can be found on our

Maura McCabe took over the Director of Membership position in February after a recent resignation. Maura submitted

this statement: “I feel honored to step in and help with this role and work with the MNDAKSPAN organization. I have

been a member of MNDAKSPAN and ASPAN since 2011. My work experience includes working in perianesthesia since

2008, first at Mayo Clinic Rochester- Saint Mary’s campus as a RN, then at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville as a Perianesthesia

Clinical Nurse Educator, and currently at Mayo Clinic Health System-Lake City as a Nursing Education Specialist. I have

been a nurse since 2004, and really felt that I found my passion in perianesthesia nursing. I love the ever-changing,

challenging environment and patient populations!

My goals for the next year in this position are to really listen to our MNDAKSPAN members and find out what

your needs are. There are so many benefits to membership in ASPAN and MNDAKSPAN, and I want to make sure

members and potential members know everything that is available to them. I’d like to hear more from members about

what I can do to serve you better. Truly know that I am here to serve you! Please contact me if I can ever be of service,

Another aspect to my role is helping with membership marketing. We’d like to get our organization out there

more and become more active in social media. Of course, we want to increase our membership, and find others ways to

Laurie Ann Rezac, RN, BSN, CAPA passed away from cancer early this year. Her husband generously shared her photo and the following obituary with our MNDAKSPAN membership:

Laurie was born on December 27, 1960 to Obel and Betty Knutson of Volga, SD. She grew up on a farm near Arlington, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1979. Laurie acquired her RN degree and later her BS in Nursing Management from Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD. She married Michael Rezac, of Dante, SD on January 7, 1983. They were blessed with three children: Nicholas, Joseph, and Laura. She enjoyed 35 years of nursing at Avera McKennan Hospital and instructed CPR for many

years as well. Laurie was a Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse, a recent accomplishment and a first for Avera Hospital. In addition to her passion for healthcare, Laurie enjoyed watching her kids play sports, time boating and skiing, playing cards, and gathering her family and friends by the fire pit. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Michael; her children, Nicholas, Joseph and Laura; three sisters, Renae (Darrel) Hoyer, Sioux Falls, Mary Lundin and LeAnn (Bud) Fenske, both of Volga; two brothers, Jim Knutson, Volga, Lenny Knutson, Brookings, SD; her mother in-law, Mary, of Dante, SD; numerous nieces and nephews, sisters and brothers in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends. Ruth found 2 that published in JOPAN. Improvement is needed to

be more aware of this example when it comes to applying for the

Gold Leaf Award.

Scholarships: 50% use of awards. Question if this is available to


board members. This may be in the bylaws.

Increase marketing of scholarship: Board members are eligible for

certification scholarship as clarified in the bylaws.

A letter was sent to inform members that scholarships are available

to recertified and certified. Two applicants for this spring applied.

Motion to state 2 applicants for certification for initial or renew, by

Julie / Mary seconded.

A potential motion regarding the website for the voting members

that will be placed in a drawing. It should be state “Those who vote

in the election will be eligible for the drawing.” Discussion followed

that a motion was not necessary for this clarification and the

wording on the website will state: “All MNDAKSPAN members who

vote during the annual board of election will be entered into a

drawing for a trip to the national conference up to $1500.”

ICPAN scholarship: Develop a numbering system for choosing the

winner:

Mary Briggs will develop a point sheet for the board to review for

future candidates. Discussion to market in the media.

Institute a maximum amount roughly $3500 for 2016.

This will be discussed at the board meeting each year to determine

the amount.

Strategic plan & goal: Hand outs included for review: “Promote

outreach to social media and improve component voting process”

Component Concerns MNDAKSPAN wants to thank component members for their feedback to the board with concerns. Conference evaluation comments are collated by the Director of Education and reviewed by all of the board members, and member suggestions are considered in conference planning and board communication and outreach efforts. The fall 2014 conference brought one such concern: handouts for conferences. In response, instructions for printing power point slide shows as handouts are available on the website under “Go Green Printing Instructions” located at http://www.mndakspan.org/conferences.php. Mary Briggs, Director of Publication

I’d like to welcome Robert Davidson to the Director of Publication role, starting a new 2-year term on May 1. I also wish to thank the board members and state that it has been a pleasure to serve on the MNDAKSPAN Board with this group of very dedicated volunteers who donate substantial time and energy in support of the MNDAKSPAN mission to support educational and professional growth of the membership. Volunteerism is the at the heart of this organization, and strong leadership is required for success in achieving the mission. One of the rewards available to board members is the opportunity to represent MNDAKSPAN at the national meetings and conferences of ASPAN. The presence of our board and other members at these events contributes to the growth and stability of both MNDAKSPAN and ASPAN, and is personally and professionally rewarding to those who attend. We maintain a strong organization in providing education because of this participation. Rewarding some of our star volunteers and leaders with trips to our professional specialty conferences, such as to the upcoming International Conference of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, also contributes to the strength and mission of MNDAKSPAN.
