When you live in a home that was designed by Dallas favorite Charles Dilbeck and updated by I.M. Pei protégé George Woo, you can’t help but absorb the creative forces that resonate in the walls and woodwork.

Brenda Bogart is no stranger to the world of design and beauty. She spent 27 years as an interior designer, starting at Wilson Associates where she designed premier hotel properties. During that time she also emerged as a children’s clothing designer, whose colorful B’s T’s were the hit of the playground set across Texas and in eight countries.

“I’ve enjoyed every design project I’ve ever worked on, but for as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to paint,” says this Park Cities resident, who rst picked up an artist’s brush in 2003 when she joined daughter Stephanie Stephenson for a portfolio class. “ at day something came alive in me. It was truly one of the best days of my life.”

Like the home that has evolved from Dilbeck ranch to mid-century modern to contemporary chic, Bogart has continued to transform her creative medium. She now produces colorful abstracts, whimsical landscapes and gurative renderings that celebrate children in idyllic play and put a quirky spin on recognizable faces. Her “Art for Albert” portrait shows a giggling Einstein and is one of her most popular prints. e “Gangsters & Other Men” series recalls an FBI Most-Wanted list of hapless characters. You might even recognize a few from history books and presidential elections.

“I think it was a er the economic meltdown in 2008 that I suddenly realized I want to create happy art,” says Bogart, who paints daily in a color-stained home studio that is hidden behind a secret door built into a wall of book cases. Her years of interior design work helped her cra the perfect

art space, complete with walls of windows and a spiral staircase that leads to a roo op perch.

Not surprisingly, this contemporary home that has housed so much creative energy also has inspired two of the six children that make up Bogart’s blended family. Daughter Stephanie Stephenson is a collage artist who also designed the Joseph Albers-inspired brick replace that is the centerpiece of the home’s large dining area. Stepdaughter Rebecca Bogart Lavoritano is a jewelry designer who combines both old and vintage materials to create fresh pieces of wearable art. Although the kids are now busy with their adult lives, the family still convenes regularly for Monday night dinners that o en include up to eight people.

Active in many charitable efforts, the Bogart home is an artistic backdrop to events, such as a recent art showing that benefited the SPCA of Texas and Compassion International. Together, with her husband, Bill Bogart, managing director of JP Morgan Chase, this artist in residence also will step out of her studio long enough to chair the upcoming American Heart Association Côtes du Coeur scheduled for April 6, 2013.

“Whatever I do I try to keep in mind three things—to be inspired, to be happy and to be aware of God’s hand in everything,” she says.

Bogart’s happy art is available on her website brendabogart.com and at Blue Print Gallery, and seven vibrant paintings liven the walls at Center for BrainHealth.

Changing the way a nation of children learns about nature, sustainability and environment started with one acre of barren land on an urban school ground in 1996.

“We need to touch every child and bring them up with a set of values that they need to live on this planet,” said celebrity chef and local-grown food advocate Alice Waters. “Number one is stewardship of the land, number two is nourishment and number three, from my point of view, is communication.”

She began the Edible Schoolyard Project at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California, working with administers and educators to turn the once blighted land into a thriving garden where food and children could grow together.

Her idea grew like wild pumpkins, and now students all over the world are actively involved in all aspects of the food cycle through the program, which gives them hands-on experience in an organic garden and kitchen classroom. Per the ESY mission, the curriculum is “fully integrated into the

school day and teaches students how their choices about food a ect their health, the environment and their communities.”

Waters is no stranger to connection between good food and happy people. Her Chez Panisse restaurant ignited the local-grown movement and has garnered international accolades, including “Best Restaurant in America,” according to Gourmet magazine in 2001

In 2009 Ms. Waters convinced First Lady Michelle Obama to plant an organic garden on the White House grounds. e e orts she has made on the local food movement was so impacting that it is a main topic of Mrs. Obama’s new book, American Grown: e Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. According to the Associated Press, the garden has produced more than 1,000 pounds of food.

IncrEdible Learning

Award-winning chef Alice Waters has taken her local-grown message from restaurant to schoolyards across the nation.

e Edible Schoolyard program has taken root locally at Moss Haven Elementary in Lake Highlands. Set on the former site of the Moss Family Farm, the program includes lessons about bugs, composting, growing and harvesting.

Moss Haven second-grader Wes Walker said, “I like all the kids out there learning through local farms. If you live on a farm, you already know it. But here you can learn it.”

Napa-based Hall Wines, owned by local entrepreneur Craig Hall and his international powerhouse wife, Kathryn, is known for award-winning wines that have Cabernet fans around the world raising their Riedels. Now it’s time for Pinot Noir drinkers to rejoice. The Halls have just launched Walt Wines, showcasing their Gap’s Crown Pinot Noir, featuring a contemporary twist on an Old

World taste. Kathryn Hall says that the hillside location and marine influence make the grapes struggle, which creates a full-bodied taste that explodes in the mouth.

Flavor notes: Blueberry, blackberry and violet for an elegant little spice.

Serve it with: Steak, Tex-Mex or any other bold flavors that can stand up and be noticed.

Love the label: The logo represents the wine’s four vineyard sites, Santa Rita Hills, Sonoma County, Anderson Valley and the Willamette Valley.

For more information on these wineries, visit bfsirfall2012.com.

Gina Puente calls her showcase acreage in historic, downtown Grapevine her “petting vineyard.” It’s where people like to linger over a glass of chardonnay or merlot while watching grapes ripen in the Texas sun. Other fans enjoy her vintage offerings a few miles away at DFW Airport. Her

La Bodega Winery, which caters to international travelers, is the first airport winery in the world. “At both locations, the goal of our wine selections is to showcase what we do well in Texas and introduce a new crowd to our industry,” says Puente.

What’s special: I love the “a-ha moment” when someone realizes we have a good thing going here in Texas.

Serve it with: Paella and any other flavorful Spanish dishes.

What’s in the name: Enjoy whimsical blends named Red-Headed Stepchild Sangria, Blonde Bombshell and Scarborough Mead.

Twenty-five years ago Dallas entrepreneur Jack Seifrick and his wife, Ann, took a short vacation to the Wine Country of Northern California where they rode bikes, drank great wine and dreamed about what it would be like to have kids. Fast forward to 2011, and the last of the kids has been dropped off at college. Jack and Ann quickly boarded a plane to Napa, and six months later they

owned a vineyard. “The timing was perfect. The kids were off doing their own thing, vineyard prices were down and we were ready for a new adventure,” says Seifrick. He explains that CAST vineyard is financed by no fewer than 18 Dallas neighbors who consider Sonoma County their new backyard. The first vintages will hit Texas wine stores in 2013.

Flavor notes: A 100% Petite Sirah that is inky, red, luscious and flavorful.

Serve it with: Great friends and your favorite meal.

What’s in the name: Every morning when the fog lifts and the view materializes, we are reminded of the spell this place cast on us when we first laid eyes on it.
