Secretary, ASME Design Theory and Methodology Committee, July 2003-present Dr. Stone is currently an Associate Professor in the Basic Engineering Department and the Director of The Student Design Center in the School of Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He joined Basic Engineering, a service teaching department, in January 1998 after completing his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. In addition to teaching fundamental engineering mechanics courses, Stone has utilized his design background to develop an undergraduate interdisciplinary design methodology courses and a graduate course covering and implementing cutting-edge product design methods. Recently, Dr. Stone has led a planning grant effort to transform the department into the degree granting Engineering Systems and Design Department. Dr. Stone’s research interests are design theory and methodology, specifically product architectures, functional representations and design languages. He has received multiple awards related to his research in product design and has authored a chapter on product architecture in a new product design text (Otto and Wood, 2001). Prior to initiating his graduate work, Dr. Stone worked in the Missions Operation Directorate of NASA-Johnson Space Center as a Space Shuttle Flight Controller. • Teaching innovations: This semester, I am in the process of introducing design team JPL’s Team-X approach to design, used in early space-mission design, into our senior design course. Through the Team-X approach, NASA was able to reduce project costs by a factor of 3 and project duration by a factor of 15 by having design members work synchronously using networked design tools. Through this technique, I hope to greatly improve students’ team skills and design quality.

SUMMARY Dr. Terpenny’s research interests are at the intersection of engineering design and information technology with the primary goal to revolutionize how engineered products and systems are conceptualized and configured. Integral to this goal is research impinging information and knowledge sharing in collaborative distributed environments and solution synthesis methods to automate and speed the consideration of design concepts in light of life-cycle considerations. This has included investigating design process and methodology, domain-neutral and interoperable formats for information and knowledge sharing via the Internet, a function-based customer-driven design paradigm, and synthesis methods utilizing genetic programming and learning. Dr. Terpenny has prior industrial experience at General Electric (GE) where she completed a two-year corporate training program in information systems and received a management recognition award for outstanding performance. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Dr. Terpenny was an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts, where she was the site director of the NSF Center for e-Design, a multi-university National Science Foundation industry-university cooperative research center. She has been the principal or co-principal investigator on more than $5 million in contracts and grants. She has been a leader in increasing information technology and industry participation in research and in engineering education. She has published 2 book chapters, and 48 peer reviewed journal and conference proceedings. She has served on numerous review panels for NSF in engineering, education, and small business. She has been a reviewer for 11 journals and numerous conferences related to engineering and engineering education, and an invited participant of several NSF workshops. She has supervised 4 Ph.D. students and 9 M.S. students and has been active in programs and research to increase the number of women and underrepresented minorities in engineering. EDUCATION

Dr. Krishnamurty's research spans in the area of simulation-based mechanical design under uncertainty focusing on theoretical and practical issues of applying decision analysis principles in engineering design. Currently, he is an active member of the NSF-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) on “e-Product Design” involving the departments of mechanical and industrial engineering, computer science and management at UMass-Amherst and the University of Pittsburgh. Here, Dr. Krishnamurty’s research focus is in the development of ontologies and tools for supporting decision making in engineering design. He has authored several Journal articles, and he has complemented these publications by conference articles presented at well-known national forums. Dr. Krishnamurty has been an invited speaker and a panelist at the NSF-sponsored Decision-based Design workshops, and was an invited participant at the Gordon Research Conferences on Foundations for Engineering Design. He is an active member of the ASME Design Division, and has been session coordinators for several ASME Design Technical Conferences. Last two years, Dr. Krishnamurty has been the organizer of the special sessions on Simulation-based Design under Uncertainty. He was also an invited participant at the 1995 NSF sponsored workshop on Future of Engineering Design. Dr. Krishnamurty has been on several NSF review panels dealing with engineering design. Dr. Krishnamurty is now an editorial board member of the International Journal of Reliability and Safety (IJRS).

Synergistic Activities

Technology Development and Transfer: Rensselaer’s Scientific Computation Research Center(SCOREC) has a long history of developing and transferring advanced automated, adaptiveand parallel simulation technologies to industry and government laboratories. Forty two com-panies have supported work in the development of automated adaptive finite element software.Several of them have commercialized the components of technologies developed. SCORECgraduates have also generated a start-up company, Simmetrix Inc., that is now providing simu-lation automation software components for simulation-based design that are being used byCAD, CAE and manufacturing companies.

Educational: Developed three graduate level courses on finite element methods and a project levelinterdisciplinary undergraduate/graduate course in computational science.

Biography Wei Sun is currently appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, with an affiliate appointment in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems. Sun’s research and education interests are in an interdisciplinary filed of Design and Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Biomedical and Tissue Engineering, in particular, in the development of a new field of Computer-Aided Tissue Engineering. Sun is currently elected as Section Editor for Tissue Engineering for Journal of American Society of Artificial Internal Organ (ASAIO), and Guest Editor for Special Issue on Bio-CAD for Journal of Computer-Aided Design (CAD). Sun has published over 120 technical papers related to his research areas, developed and taught new courses in CAD/CAM and Computer-Aided Tissue Engineering, and has applied seven patents to the design and fabrication of biopharmaceutical and tissue products.

D. Synergistic Activities

The following examples demonstrate the impact of Dr. Gupta’s professional and scholarly activities:

1. Dr. Gupta has played a leadership role in organizing conferences in the area of computer-aided design and manufacturing. He has served as Papers Chair in 1999 ASME Design for Manufacturing Conference, Exhibit Chair in 2000 ASME Design Engineering Technical Conferences, Program Chair in 2002 ASME Design for Manufacturing Conference, and Conference Chair in 2003 ASME Design for Manufacturing Conference.

2. Dr. Gupta is the vice-chair of the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Technical Committee of ASME’s Design Division. As a member of this technical committee he plays a key role in establishing communication between academia and industry and identifying actions that need to take place to transfer DFM knowledge to industry.

3. Dr. Gupta is participating in a mentorship program called ESTEEM (Engineering Science and Technology to Energize and Expand Young Minds). The goal of this program is to expose high school students to research in the university laboratories by giving them well-defined research projects. Last year, he mentored a student who learned CNC machining and machined simple molds to study dimensional accuracy of interfaces in bi-material objects.

4. Dr. Gupta has developed a new undergraduate course titled Manufacturing Automation. This course covers fundamentals underlying contemporary manufacturing automation technologies. Two aspects of manufacturing automation are emphasized: (1) computer-based systems for automating and controlling manufacturing processes such as numerically controlled machines, industrial robots, rapid prototyping machines, coordinate measurement machines, and programmable logic controllers; and (2) the use of software in facilitating information exchange between different components of manufacturing decision support systems.

5. Dr. Gupta has participated in the development of a generative process planning system that reduces the process planning time for a typical sheet metal part from several hours to few minutes. This planner has been successfully tested with more than one thousand industry parts and is being used in a number of sheet metal job shops. He has received a patent (U.S. Patent 6,233,538) on the setup-planning algorithm developed as a part of this project. He also received SME's Robert W. Galvin Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award in 2001 for his contributions to this project. He has also received Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research in 2000, CAREER Award from NSF in 2001, and Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists an Engineers (PECASE) in 2001 to carry out further research in computer aided manufacturing area.

At Bucknell he teaches the capstone senior design course, mechanical design, and mechatronics. His research interests involve information management for design and the design of mechatronic systems and products. Integral to this research is the exploration of approaches for the capture, storage and retrieval of product development information. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania and has been the PI on numerous projects with industry involving new product development and the design of production infrastructure. During the summer of 1997 and the year of 1998/99 he was a research faculty fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the Design Engineering Technologies Group where he developed knowledge-based protocols for a multi-university-based project called the Open Assembly Design Environment. Prior to graduate study he was a Process Engineer for Sony Corporation where he contributed to the start-up of their first compact disc manufacturing plant. He has consulted extensively with the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to assist entrepreneurs with new product development enterprises. He developed and implemented an award-winning product development process adopted by all 17 of the state SBDCs. During the academic year 2002/03 he was a Visiting Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He is currently a PI on a multi-university NSF ITR project to explore information management approaches for product platforms and mass customization. Education

d. Synergistic Activities

[1] SAE “eTool” Automotive Working Group Co-chair of this SAE working group which is developing guidelines for on-line vendor CAD catalogs. Has developed some of the key quality definition documentation. The working group has about 15 member companies from the automotive industry, including Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and Visteon.

[2] Course Development and Teaching • Design Automation Course – Developed and teach this graduate level course, which covers basic

CAD topics (data structures and algorithms, object-oriented programming, the Internet, geometric modeling) and some advanced topics (features, knowledge representation). Many students have found it useful in their current work and in finding new work.

• Teach the senior-level Computer-Aided Design course. Introduced advanced topics such as systematic top-down design using Master Models. Introduced modern CAD topics such as geometric constraint solving and variational vs. parametric CAD.

[3] SAE Clean Snowmobile Competition Enterprise Instructor for this Enterprise. The Michigan Tech Enterprise program allows students to participate in large-scale, multi-disciplinary design experiences that run from sophomore through senior years. This program substitutes for senior design and results in a minor. In the SAE Clean Snowmobile Competition students design quiet, low-emissions snowmobiles that maintain high performance. Currently introducing systematic design practices.

[4] Software Framework for CAD and Simulation Developed and maintain this software, which is used at Michigan Tech and Clemson University. This software provides a testbed for CAD and simulation research. It has been used at Michigan Tech University, Arizona State University, Clemson University, Bristol Aerospace and the Canadian Space Agency.

Synergistic Activities • Industry Collaborations: Working with (1) engineers at Boeing and Lockheed Martin Space

Systems to develop and evaluate effective strategies for metamodel-based visualization for design optimization; and (2) Durametal, Flowserve, Ivalo Lighting, Unique Mixer, and Whirlpool to investigate their product platform implementation strategies and the practical implementation of web-based strategies for promoting customer interaction during product platform customization.

• University Collaborations: Working with Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory and the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute to develop web-based frameworks for web-based data management and simulation-based design of complex systems using metamodels and visualization.

Dr. Chen is currently the director of the Integrated DEsign Automation Laboratory (IDEAL- http://ideal.mech.northwestern.edu/). Her research goal is to develop rational design methods based on mathematical optimization techniques and statistical methods for use in complex design and manufacturing problems. Her current research involves issues such as robust design, reliability engineering, simulation-based design, multidisciplinary optimization, and decision-based design under uncertainty. Dr. Chen is the recipient of the 1996 US National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Award and the 1998 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal achievement award. Dr. Chen is a member of ASME, AIAA, INFORMS, and SAE. She is an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering Optimization.
