Obituary

It is with regret that we announce the

death of Nigel Dalton at the age of 62 after

a long illness. Well known in the

woodworking machinery sector, he and his

brother Francis were the third generation to

enter the family business of A L Dalton Ltd.

in Nottingham. Nigel joined the company

over 45 years ago having first realised an

early ambition by working on steam trains

at British Rail's Nottingham depot,

including the famous "Royal Scot" which

led to a lifelong interest in steam. Very

much a family man, he leaves a wife and

three children. His eldest son, Alex, has

become the fourth generation of the family

to enter the business and is now a Director.

His other son is with the BBC and his

daughter is studying at Leeds University.

He was very proud of his family and, as

Francis puts it, split his time and interests

firmly between his family and the family

business.

As Director and joint owner of Daltons

with involvement in all aspects from sales

to service, he was when necessary a "hands

on" practical person who took a special

pride in ensuring that the company offered

the very best in aftercare, transport,

machine moving and installation.

Nigel Dalton will be much missed both

within Daltons and the wider woodworking

machinery community.

Blum’s Interzumdonation pays for 1,000eye operations

For the 13th time this year, visitors to

Blum’s stand at Interzum, Cologne, forwent

their gifts and signed the visitors’ book

instead. The fittings manufacturer donated

10 euros per signature to ‘Light for the

World’, an Austrian organisation that

operates on an international scale to help

people with eye disease, the blind and

particularly children in the poor regions of

the Earth. This year’s donation amounted to

30,000 euros which will finance operations

to restore sight to 1,000 patients. The

donation was presented to ‘Light for the

World’ in June.

EDITORS COMMENT

We are delighted to welcome our

readers, contributors and advertisers

to our re-launched and re-designed

magazine, Panel & Joinery Production.

In these challenging economic times the

industry has been through some tough

times over the last 12 months but there are

signs of recovery and with possible

movement in the housing market we can

begin to feel optimistic about increased

manufacturing opportunities in the

woodworking industry.

Mindful of the changes and requirements

to the industry we decided to open up the

magazine to include the joinery side of the

business in order to provide a full range of

information for all sectors of the market.

The magazine plans to keep the ‘old

favourites’ but we also plan to offer new

sections in the coming months. We will

feature installation stories and product

pieces and are always happy to receive

suggestions from readers.

12 months ago we went on-line and the

website has proved a huge success. The

website has also been re-designed to

compliment the new look magazine and we

are pleased to announce that we are

introducing a series of innovative video

footage from advertisers and contributors

displaying their products. You can access

contributors and advertisers websites via our

online Website Directory.

You can find the new website at

www.p-j-production.com

We hope you enjoy the new look

magazine which will continue to be

published on a bi-monthly basis.

Kind regards

& JOINERYPRODUCTION

- first choice for printed anddigital industry information

David Miller, well known and respected

in the laminating and finishing

machinery field, has embarked on a new

venture.

With 38 years experience in the supply and

service of laminating and finishing

machines, David has spent the last 25 years,

as Managing Director of Hymmen Miller

Ltd. his decision to embark on a new venture

was not taken easily.

Following a visit to the Spanish company

Barberan, who manufacture a full range of

Laminating, profile wrapping and finishing

machinery, and discussions with their export

sales manager, Horst Swessinger and owner

Jesus Barberan, David made his decision to

represent them in the UK

This decision was made easier as David

had sold the Barberan range 30 years ago

and had not lost contact with either Horst or

Jesus during the intervening years.

"I have always had a lot of respect for Mr

Barberan and the developments he has made

over the years whilst still maintaining a very

family orientated company"

Barberan have their own engineer based

in the UK who will continue to install and

service their machines and handle the supply

of spare parts, David will be responsible for

the sale of new machines.

Ligna was an exciting exhibition, proving

David's belief that Barberan would give a

broader customer base with a wide range of

competitively priced machines. The range of

flat laminating lines, including hot melt

systems, profile wrapping lines and a full

range of roller coating and printing lines that

were on the show resulted in some good

enquiries.

Trading as Miller Associates, from his

factory unit in Baldock, David will continue

to offer the Ernst range of sanding and

denibbing machines, Venjakob spray

machines as well as the full Barberan range.

With the growth in Leaderflush

Shapland’s Plasform® department

together with the installation of a

Stefani double-sided post forming

machine from the SCM Group,

Leaderflush Shapland decided to

enhance their CNC machining facility

with the addition of an SCM 5-axes

CNC Machining Centre, model Record

132NT TVN Prisma.

Leaderflush Shapland’s Barnstaple site

specialise in the manufacturing of

Plasform®, a postfomed fully encapsulated

doorset that is specifically designed to be

easy to clean and maintain. Damage

resistant and versatile, Plasform® doorsets

can be used in applications such as

hospitals, clean rooms, sports halls and

pharmaceutical companies.

Leaderflush Shapland’s Engineering

Manager comments: “With the investment

in the Stefani machine, it was necessary to

examine the preparation of the sheet

materials that go on to the post former and

also the machining processes after the post

forming operation, such as apertures, hinge

and lock recessing and pre-drilling in the

door and frame. It is not high volume work,

but in each door and frame there is a lot of

work to do, so it was essential that we

sourced a machine that was versatile and

easy to program and set-up between jobs,

capable of machining elements such as

door blanks, PVC and laminates.”

“Selecting a 5-axis machine against a

traditional 3 or 4-axis machine has proven

to be a wise choice. For machining lock

casings, we do not need to use aggregate

heads that lose power through their

gearing, but using the main routing head; it

can be driven harder and also produces a

far better quality cut. The number of tools

required and tool changes can be

significantly reduced, for example, we can

use the same tool for straight, angled and

mitre cuts.”

With a variety of CNC Machining Centres

on site, Leaderflush Shapland’s production

and project engineers decided to fully

assess the market and a number of existing

and potential suppliers were called in to

suggest CNC machines to meet the high

specification required.

After several meetings, discussions and

demonstrations, an order was finally placed

for the SCM Record Prisma 5-axis machine

with SCM’s Area Sales Manager, Mike Lee.

A 6300mm long bar and vacuum pod

machine table was specified so that 2 work

streams could be located on the table

together, i.e. the door at one end of the table

and the frame at the other end, so that both

could go on to the assembly department as

a matched pair after machining.

The Prisma has a true 5-axes movement

with a fully interpolating 11KW Routing

Head. The tools are fed and located to the

HSK spindle from a 12-station automatic

tool changer, which in turn can be fed with

additional tools from a supplementary 24-

station tool changer, enabling a full

compliment of tools to be stored on board,

avoiding any possibility of damage if tools

were continually removed and replaced.

Also large diameter saw blades and

machining heads can easily be employed.

Programming of the SCM is done off-

line using SCM’s “X-Door” and “Xilog

Plus” interface and full training was

provided by SCM’s experienced

CNC engineers.

According to Leaderflush Shapland’s

Production Engineering Manager “We are

extremely pleased with the SCM 5-axis

Prisma machine and the delivery,

installation and commissioning went very

well and was a credit to SCM UK’s service

engineers. We will definitely be looking at

further SCM CNC machines for

Leaderflush Shapland in the future.”

NEWSINSTALLATIONSaws

Installing a second Striebig vertical

panel saw has led to greater efficiency

at Dixon Timber Products, a leading

manufacturer of high quality, bespoke

panel-based furniture for the

institutional and health care markets.

Its new Evolution 6224 replaced an elderly

Holz-Her saw. The decision to purchase a

second Striebig was made because of the

consistent accuracy and reliability delivered

by the first Evolution, bought in 2005.

Both saws are used to cut MFC, MDF,

solid grade laminates and solid surfaces up to

20 mm thick, and up to 38 mm thick

chipboard panels used for worktops, with

diamond saw blades used to reduce

sharpening costs.

Dixon Timber Products’ managing

director John Dixon said: “He said there were

advantages of having two of the same models

side-by-side. User familiarity is very

important so it’s easy to switch operators

between the saws to provide cover for

sickness and holidays.

“We have improved our sizing efficiency as

the saws are ideal for handling lots of small

jobs. Because all our output is made-to-

measure, the Evolution allows for a quick

change-round when several jobs are going

through on the same day, which is quite

often.”

He said he was happy to buy another

Evolution “as the first has

been totally reliable with a

consistently high quality of

cut.”

An angle cutter supplied

with the first Striebig is now

used with both saws. This

optional unit, easily attached

to the left or right of any

vertical cutting point, is

adjustable to 1/10th of a

degree. It can be locked into

place and is for use with

panels up to 42 mm thick, producing angle

cuts which are totally clean and accurate.

The Evolution 6224 is the largest model in

the series with a maximum cutting area of

5,300 mm x 2,240 mm and a maximum

cutting depth of 80mm.

It represents the cutting edge in vertical

panel saw technology. Features considered

expensive optional extras in other saws are

included as standard, such as a digital

measuring system, accurate to 0.1 mm, and

an adjustable precision display that can be set

to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1 mm,

according to the thickness of the panels

being sized.

Numerous automatic procedures carried

out by the press of a button include locking

and releasing the beam saw, setting the

horizontal cutting height, plunging and

swivelling the motor, locking the support

rollers during sawing and fine saw

blade adjustment.

Dixon Timber Products was formed to

supply the medical furniture market. It’s now

one of the main players in the highly

competitive sector, manufacturing and

installing a wide range of panel-based

products at hospitals and primary care

centres throughout the UK and abroad.

Around 80 per cent of its output goes into

the medical sector, with the remainder

specified by schools, universities, hotels,

retail outlets, factories, offices and prisons.

Among recent contracts have been

installations for hospitals as far apart as

Brighton, Elgin, Plymouth and Stornaway,

furniture for one of the oldest hospices in

London and fittings for a gold mining

laboratory in Senegal.

With nearly 80 per cent of orders made up

of repeat business, the Doncaster company’s

turnover increased by 25 per cent last year

and its order book remains remarkably

healthy.

Both Striebig saws, together with Al-Ko

mobile extraction units, were supplied by

Striebig’s exclusive UK agent, T.M.

Machinery Sales, of Leicester.

Travis Perkins plc, a major company in

the builders’ merchants and home

improvement market, has over 1200

branches throughout the UK. Its

Canvey Island sawmill is the Group’s

premier operation in the south east,

and has upgraded its mill by recently

installing a new technology Weinig

Powermat 500 moulder with HSK

PowerLock tooling, PowerCom memory

and state-of-the-art tool room

equipment. This investment puts them

in the top joinery manufacturing

league, and sets them apart from

competitors who still use conventional

moulding techniques, and provides

many advantages for customers.

The Canvey sawmill is

steadily building an

enviable reputation for

joinery and increasing its

wide range of timber PSE

and profile mouldings. The

difference now is that the

service to customers is

faster, more accurate with

exact repeatability, and to

the highest standards of

finish – particularly on

‘specials’ and short runs, at

highly competitive rates.

Quality is guaranteed.

in Sweden and Finland. The best quality

grades are controlled from supplier to

customer, and a close working partnership

with suppliers ensures a common

commitment.

The new Weinig moulder is used to

produce architectural joinery – skirtings,

architraves, dado rails, cornices and

virtually any profile of moulding, in short or

long batches. ‘Specials’ present no problem

and are just as easy to produce as standard

profiles, because of the flexibility of the new

technology Powermat and new generation

tool room equipment - which comprises a

computerised template maker, Rondamat

profile grinder and computerised

PowerCom setting stand.

The new technology is attracting more

and varied customers. The mill’s

customers’ include: other branches in the

Group, house builders, construction

companies, ship manufacturers, the

growing garden shed and patio decking

industry, and recently, special orders in

hard wood for exterior cladding for colleges,

an opera house and the Millennium Centre

in Cardiff.

Said Colin Courtnell, Branch Manager of

Travis Perkins, Canvey Island, “The

investment in new technology will help us

to grow our moulding business and we

have been attracting more

enquiries and customers

because of it. We are in a

much stronger position to

respond more quickly and

are much more flexible in

production, to handle

‘specials’. Downtime on

job change overs has

dropped dramatically,

making our prices more

competitive”.

From order to delivery,

customer information,

including delivery dates, is

recorded on computer with

the aim of having an

efficient ‘paperless’ system.

Orders for ‘specials’, for

instance, are transferred to

the computerised template

maker for new profiles to be

made, then on to the

grinder for tooling, then to

the computerised setting

stand, after which tool

settings are transferred to

the Powermat control

memory, for fast and easy

setting up. No time

consuming chasing of

documents, less cause for

errors - all leading to

delivery on time.

In addition, the Mill’s

wide range of services

extends to cover full milling facilities: stress

grading, truss joints, I-beams, priming,

timber treatment and sheet materials. Add

to this the extensive experience of the Travis

Perkins organisation and the personal

attention they give to all customers – small

or large.

Svedplan is a fast emerging producer

of flat pack furniture that has

deployed a team of eight of the latest

ABB robots to improve competitiveness

and reduce risk to manual handlers. As

a result, production has increased by

45 percent from a line that will pay

back in less than three years!

As one of Scandinavia’s budding

producers of flat pack furniture, Svedplan,

that turns over SEK 300 million (Euros 33.3

million) needed to improve processes to

maintain competitiveness with low-cost

production and reduce the risk to handlers

in the packaging process. As demand and

production grew, Svedplan knew that

automation was the natural development in

the production process. Robotic systems

have been involved in loading and

unloading production lines, together with

automated processes for drilling holes. But

packaging the various components was still

largely a slow and costly manual activity.

To provide a solution, Svedplan turned to

Teamster AB, a specialist in automated

process technology, to create a concept that

was flexible enough to handle a wide range

of large products and allow for fast changes

to the line.

Teamster recommended automating half

of the manual picking line, creating three

stations with a total of eight ABB robots. As

a member of ABB’s Partner Network,

Teamster understood that ABB Robotics

would be able to provide the best robots for

the system. Three IRB 660 robots were

used to feed parts directly from pallets to

five IRB 4400 robots that pack the products

into boxes.

The IRB 660 is a dedicated 4-axis

palletiser, which combines a 3.15 metre

reach with a 250 kg payload. Indeed, the

IRB 660 has the versatility, reach and

handling capacity to meet the demands of

most palletising applications. Well-balanced

steel arms with double bearing joints, a

torque-strut on axis 2 and rapid

manoeuvrability makes the IRB 4400

perfectly matched for Svedplan’s needs,

where speed, accuracy and flexibility are

important. For economic operation, the

drive train is optimised to give high torque

with the lowest power consumption.

The Euros 2,268,000 (£1.5m) investment

has made a remarkable impact on the

production line. As a result of the

automated robotic system, production has

increased by an impressive 45 percent with

a return on investment estimated at just

two to three years! Automated lines now

prepare 10 to 15 boxes per hour, compared

with six to10 boxes per hour on the manual

lines. Payback is estimated at two years –

three at most. The new technology is also

vital for Svedplan future prosperity in the

highly competitive furniture market.

To accompany the new robots, vision

system software was installed. This enables

products to be saved as ‘recipes’ in the

system and changes to the product

handling can be made efficiently. New

products can be introduced quickly by

entering the pack size with details of the

new packaging position and station.

Worker attitudes towards automation

have also changed. Preben Ritter, Managing

Director of Svedplan, commented, “At first,

workers were extremely wary of this new

technology, but now they feel proud of it!”

Svedplan assured workers that, far from

threatening their jobs, it was the best way of

preserving employment in the face of global

competition and significantly there have

been no job losses as a result.

Svedplan started business in 1944 as a

traditional carpentry workshop, producing

solid wooden beds and couches. Today the

company specialises in the production of

flat-packed furniture units, manufacturing

as many as 50,000 products a week for one

of the world’s biggest furniture retailers.

These are freighted directly from the factory

to outlets and distribution centres around

the world.

the 10,000th machine to roll off its

production lines in Monaghan was

delivered to Weyerhaeuser, the world’s

leading manufacturer of engineered

lumber products.

Truck number 10,000 will be working at

Weyerhaeuser’s Parallam Mill in Annacis

Island near Vancouver, and it was officially

handed over to Chuck Antonides,

Weyerhaeuser’s Director of Lean Processes,

by Combilift USA’s President Tommy

Cadden. It is also the first 10 tonne capacity

Combilift to be operational at a

Weyerhaeuser site.

The majority of Weyerhaeuser’s products

are oversized loads which can be as long as

20m, and having identified the Combilift 4-

way concept as the answer to handling such

challenging products, it now operates 130

Combilifts across its sites in North

America. The trucks play a key role in the

company’s commitment to the safest

material handling

procedures and excellent

productivity, and were

designed specifically for

Weyerhaeuser’s

requirements.

Combilift MD Martin

McVicar: “Weyerhaeuser’s

case exemplifies how

customer feedback from the

wide variety of industry

sectors we supply has been

instrumental in helping us

to continually improve the

Combilift concept, to

become the world’s largest

supplier of long-load

handling equipment.”

“Product development was based on

close collaboration between the two

companies, with Combilift acting constantly

and quickly on feedback from

Weyerhaeuser personnel,” says Tommy

Cadden. “Chuck Antonides visited our

manufacturing facility in Ireland on a

number of occasions to liaise with the

management and engineers. Within a six

month time frame from August 2007 to

January 2008, Combilift designed, built

and delivered the first of the Weyerhaeuser

6 tonne units and throughout 2008

Weyerhaeuser ordered and took delivery of

a total of 108 of these models.

A raft of features designed to ease the

handling of extreme loads and to make life

easier for drivers are integrated into the

C12,000WSL and the C20,000WSL

models, such as a larger operator cab,

sticker boxes and containers for chainsaws

and tools fixed to the body of the truck, and

an integrated side shifting mast which

caters for the varying dimensions of

product. Combilift’s customized approach

has proved to be such a success that

Weyerhaeuser has embarked on a program

to phase out all other types of conventional

forklifts at its distribution centres and

replace them with Combilift models.

Ensuring that panels are correctly

bonded is a vital aspect of the

manufacturing process, with poor

adhesive selection or application likely

to impact heavily on overall quality,

durability and performance.

There is a vast array of adhesives on the

market – once specifiers have chosen

between a water-based or solvent-based

product, they must then decide on a

contact, single-part or two-part adhesive,

and whether it should be applied by brush,

spray or roller. But it is imperative to get

these decisions right to avoid costly

mistakes.

Commercially, there is a requirement to

strike a balance between adhesive cost, the

requirements of

production deadlines, and

the time needed for

products to reach the

desired bond strength. And

while it is generally true

that in terms of bonding

strength and quality, you do

get what you pay for,

overspecification can also

impact on performance,

with too strong a bond not

allowing the required

flexibility during usage of

the finished product.

Water-based or solvent-

based?

2009 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER Panel & Joinery Production 13

The benefits of solvent-based adhesives

have always been the speed of solvent

evaporation and the potential for high

strength, but increased environmental and

health and safety concerns are beginning to

have a greater impact on adhesive selection.

While solvent-based adhesives are still

the preferred option in applications

involving rubber, for almost every other

application, regardless of the combination

of substrates, there is usually a water-based

adhesive available which, if used correctly,

will deliver the required bond.

Water-based adhesives are non-

flammable when wet, do not emit toxic

fumes - meaning they are far less

demanding in terms of the personal

protective equipment (PPE) required - and

usually require less capital outlay for their

application within the factory. Conversely,

solvent-based or polyurethane reactive

(PUR) adhesives which contain isocyanates

require greater outlay to ensure safety in

the application area.

The speed with which the products must

be bonded will govern the type of adhesive

chosen. All adhesives will have a differing

‘open time’ – the time available to bring the

surfaces together before the adhesive sets –

as well as a ‘time to handling strength’ and

a ‘time to full cure’.

Where immediate bonding is needed –

either because of high throughput or

because further processing is required – a

contact adhesive is the best option.

Surprisingly, water-based contact adhesives

often outperform solvent-based products

when it comes to elevated temperature

applications. Otherwise, specifiers have a

choice between single-part PUR adhesives,

which are usually pre-heated and are then

applied to one surface, and a two-part epoxy

adhesive, comprising two separate

components which react chemically and

start to cure when mixed.

The properties of the substrates are key

to the specification process. Using a water-

based adhesive to join wood to metal will

require thorough drying of the metal before

application to negate the risk of corrosion.

Meanwhile, when bonding foam, heat-

applied products can melt foams, while a

solvent-based contact adhesive may contain

chemicals which can dissolve or damage

the foam.

The question of application

When selecting between application

methods, the total surface area to be

covered must be considered. Spraying

requires the preparation (and cleaning

afterwards) of a spray gun but is generally

more economical for larger areas and offers

better control over adhesive thickness. For

smaller areas, brush or roller application is

preferable as there is less waste and no

requirement for spray gun preparation and

cleaning. Apart from a few PUR adhesives,

the majority of modern adhesives are

suitable for spraying, although once again

with solvent-based contact adhesives,

potential health and safety issues can arise

as a proportion of the solvent will diffuse

into the air before the adhesive reaches the

product surface.

Where a contact adhesive is used,

pressure will be required after application

to allow the surfaces to bond. Flexible

materials can be treated with a hand roller,

while solid sections will require either a

hydraulic press (where the surfaces being

joined are relatively small) or, for larger

surfaces, a ‘nip’ roller, which consists of two

continuously rotating wheels with a space

between them through which the

workpiece is passed. This lends itself

particularly well to continuous operation

and thus to high throughput applications.

The subsequent processes required after

application can impact significantly on cost

– of both equipment and labour - and so

should be considered alongside the

adhesive costs when specifying.

Getting the advice of a specialist

adhesives supplier from an early stage will

go a long way towards guaranteeing correct

product selection – and once the decision

on adhesive type and application method

has been made, training operatives in

effective preparation, handling and usage

will ensure the product delivers to

expectations.

Elcon is celebrating its 60th year as a

leading technological innovator in

the manufacture of vertical panel saws

and is one of the major international

suppliers of the highest quality

machinery for cutting-to-size panel

materials.

It all began in 1948 in a wooden shed in

a small shipyard in Holland's’ lake district;

two brothers, Gerard and Frans Meijer,

started to produce a wide variety of

woodworking

machinery ranging

from circular saws,

moulders,

thicknessers, planers

and tenoners.

Production grew

rapidly so much so

that in 1953 they had to move

to larger premises. The

company continued to grow and in 1955

they moved to a large new and modern

building close to Schipol Airport and by the

end of 1980’s the next generation, Piet and

Peter Meijer, had taken over the

management and directorship from the

founders.

The third partner/director at Elcon is

Robbert J. Ledeboer, who is Commercial

Director and is responsible for new

developments. Robbert gained his

experience in the marketing and sales of

tele communications and brings a strong

ambition to further develop the position of

Elcon in the market.

The company’s very first vertical panel

saw was developed in 1971 and some of the

original models are still in daily use today.

Although they might look rather old

fashioned compared to today’s range of

sophisticated machinery they are still

reliable and functional.

Elcon have world-wide representation

and have developed a network of long-

lasting relationships with their overseas

distributors. A.L. Dalton Ltd, also a family-

owned company, have been representing

Elcon in the UK and Ireland since 1993.

Elcon can boast that it was the first to

develop and introduce touch-screen

technology for vertical panels saws. The

development of programmable control

systems was aimed at making the use of the

machines as easy to operate as possible,

especially at a lower skill level.

The software programme for the

optimisation of the cutting pattern,

supplied by Ardis, is an optimising software

especially developed for Elcon for use with

the Advance Quadra Beam Saw which

allows a directly controlled

7-axis machine positioning

for a most efficient saw. The

machine performs like a

conventional beam saw but

the floor space taken up is

considerably reduced whilst

the operator can control the

full process from complete

board to final end product by pressing only

one button.

The Advance

clamping system allows

the sawblade to cut

from the bottom. Two

clamps hold and lift the

material ready for the

reference cut, boards

are then repositioned

on the base where the horizontal cut

is performed whilst still holding the

above unused board and its weight, hence

eliminating the need to ever remove pieces

from the saw until cut to size so reducing

manual handling. By cutting from the

bottom, especially with thin, delicate

material, the cut piece doesn’t drop behind

when the sawblade has finished the cut.

Multiple panels can be loaded for cutting

when using the clamping system.

The Elcon ‘D’ type entry level vertical saw

provides exceptional value for money and is

available in cutting sizes of 3300x1550mm

or 1850 height and 3300x1550mm or 1850

height and 4300mm by up to 2150mm with

a maximum cutting depth of 60mm

incorporating powerful 4kW motors.

Health and Safety has been taken into

account with a most effective dust

collection system. The patented Limpio

system collects the dust from the front and

rear of the panel and because the sawblade

is completely enclosed, reaches the lowest

dust-emission with minimal airflow

requirements.

The Elcon series ranging from the D

through to the Quadra all benefit from

numerous optional features. Materials such

as manufactured board, aluminium,

composites, plastics and

acrylics can easily be sawn

by any machine in the

range. Elcon will also

produce custom-made

machines to meet

specific customer

requirements.

Elcon recorded a very

successful 2008 and gained market share

mainly within Western Europe.

The increase in market share is based on

the one hand upon the success of the new

automatic vertical beam saw, the Advance

Quadra and on the other hand the recently

introduced very economic entry level

model, the ‘D’.

The success of the D-series is based both

on quality and price; with its heavy, robust

frame construction and competitive pricing.

Firstly in Finland!

A worldwide industrial forestry company,

the Finnish mega-company UPM

KYMMENE, have just recently gone into

production with their new Schelling cut to

size plant type ASH with fully automated

Stacking.

The new Schelling angle plant was

installed in the veneer factory at Kalso in

Vuohijärvi / Finland. The yearly production

capacity of this factory is 80.000 cubic

metres of pine peel veneer which is used in

the production of parquet flooring.

The big challenge for Schelling was the

material the customer used. The Schelling

plant has to cut 2mm thick veneer in book

form and then stack this afterwards

automatically. Due to the production

processes of these veneers, they are very

wavy and a book of 80 veneers with a

thickness of 2mm can be up to 320mm

thick, which is double the thickness it

would measure if it were flat. Therefore the

material needs to be compressed, starting at

the first material take-over position before

the rip-cut saw and consequently at the rip-

cut and cross-cut saw cycles.

The Schelling Angle plant was especially

designed for this process and the

production on this machine has proved to

be a great success. Schelling are proud to

report that the customer is very pleased,

both with the installation of the plant and

the professional completion of the difficult

aspects of this project.

And Also In Italy!

After selling a large plant to the customer

IMAB in Fermignano, last autumn,

Schelling was able to continue their success

this spring by closing further machine

deals.

Firstly, the company ILCAM in Cormons

in the North of Italy - a prestigious

producer of furniture doors & panels, -

ordered a new Schelling ah6 430/230 angle

plant in March 2009.

Then two weeks after the LIgna

exhibition, a complete cutting line

incorporating a rip-cut saw - type fh 6 580

which includes an automatic stacking

system - plus a separate cross-cut saw, fh 6

180, was sold to Top Linea in Pieve di

Solgino.

And finally, at the end of June 2009, a

contract was agreed with our new customer

Friulpress to take delivery of a new ah 8

580/230 angle system with semi-automatic

stacking. Frilupress is a supplier to the

furniture industry and is based in

Pordenone.

Therefore during the last eight months, a

total value of nearly 4 million euros worth

of plant & systems have been sold in Italy

alone! Considering the present economic

situation in Europe, this is a fantastic

success for Schelling, which would not have

been possible without the outstanding

support of our agents in Italy.

For large-format panel processing applications, AXYZ International can provide a wide choiceof standard CNC routers. These are recognised as being among the most technically advancedand competitively priced machines available. However, there are many industries where there

is the need to machine larger and/or multiple sheets of material. This is a task that has invariablyproved beyond the capabilities of smaller routers supplied by other manufacturers and has resultedin the use of manual routing with all of its attendant variables in terms of increased production time, material wastage and exposure to human error. To resolve this situation, AXYZ Automation hastaken the lead in the development and installation of an increasing number of bespoke routingsolutions. These have now assumed benchmark status within those industries where a large- orsuper large-format production requirement exists.

SCM’s CYFLEX F900 CNC boring machine is now even more compact and has turned“PRO”. Designed for the small woodworking and panel processing workshops, butalso useful for prototyping for large companies, it is compact and flexible, for

machining with the worktable tilted vertically and is controlled by Xylog software similarto all SCM CNC machines. The new type of integral protection has further reduced themachine’s footprint, having eliminated the previous safety mats, which has given the newCYFLEX an improved design without distorting the original concept.

Practical and convenient, the main advantage of the CYFLEX F900 PRO is ease of use for theoperator both during the loading and unloading stages.

The control panel is built into the machine’s protection, allowing full control of operations withouthaving to move from the position adopted for panel loading.

Kelwood Machinery Ltd is pleased to

announce that they have been

appointed as agents in Yorkshire by

IWM to promote the range of

Traditional Solid timber and Panel

processing machines from Casadei

Macchine and the CNC Machine

centres from Busellato. They are also

able to offer high speed, heavy duty 4

side planer/moulders from Gau Jing

and CNC Window production

equipment from Soukup.

Director Kelvin Wilkins said

that he was delighted to have

formed the partnership with Ian

Brown of IWM

and that

customer’s will soon see the benefit of their

combined experience in the trade.

VC Industries, Leeds based panel

processors have, through the ‘Inside

Industry programme, opened their

doors to other manufacturers to

demonstrate how they have

successfully combined LEAN

manufacturing with enhanced ICT

systems to create sustainable

improvements.

The “Inside Industry’ programme

sponsored by the Manufacturing Advisory

Service (MAS), gives manufacturing

companies the opportunity to visit and

learn from other successful manufacturers

in the Yorkshire and Humber region –

allowing them to benchmark their

performance. The VCi factory visit was a

resounding success, with representatives

from 6 companies visiting the factory to

increase their knowledge.

“The factory visit gave us the opportunity

to showcase our ICT capabilities which

have helped VCi improve job tracking from

order through to delivery. With support

from MAS Consultant Neale Cook, we have

developed a customized production system

which has enabled us to plan jobs more

quickly and reduce non-conformances,”

stated Pauline Vernon, VCi Director.

The bespoke software system has been

developed to work via VCi’s existing web

browser, and interfaces with their existing

Exchequer operating system – enabling cost

implementation to be kept to a minimum.

Every panel produced by VCi now has a bill

of material, a preferred product route and a

panel specific drawing.

“Representatives on the visit were able to

see the next phase in the development of

our software system – implementation of

shop floor data collection. Each process

within the manufacture of a panel has an

individual bar code which is scanned as the

panel completes its process allowing the

panels to be tracked through the factory,”

continued Pauline.

The implementation of VCi’s shop floor

data collection system was funded through

a grant from AIDC UK’s Business Assist

Programme which aims to give SMEs in

West Yorkshire advice and guidance on the

guidance on the technology that is most

suited to their business needs.

Pauline concluded: “The aim of factory

visit was to demonstrate to other

manufacturers the benefits of ICT systems

within their manufacturing environments

and to demonstrate how their present

systems might be used as platforms for

further development. The inside industry

visits are very useful, giving companies the

opportunity to learn from others outside

their market sector. Hopefully visitors to

VCi will have taken away some ideas they

can implement to make improvements in

their own manufacturing facilities,”

concluded Pauline.

Dust Control Systems Ltd has installed

a new extraction system for a leading

Northern Irish manufacturer of vinyl-

wrapped doors for kitchens, bedrooms

and bathrooms which, somewhat

uniquely, combines a bulk storage silo

and a filter in a single unit.

Silverwood Doors is an operating division

of WC Guthrie Ltd, who have been

recognised as one of Ireland's foremost

manufacturers of fitted furniture for over 30

years. Today the company specialises

exclusively in the design and manufacture of

high quality, foil-wrapped, MDF furniture

components. Employing the latest CNC

technology and software, Silverwood offers a

standard door range, available in relatively

low order quantities, along with a 'contract

package' which provides a virtually unlimited

range of door designs and options.

Coupled with recent large-scale

investment in 'state-of-the-art' machinery,

Silverwood actively pursues a programme

of energy reduction and environmental

initiatives at its facility in Lisburn, Co.

Antrim. A waste-to-energy plant burns all

the company’s MDF waste and generates

heat for the 45,000 sq. ft. factory and hot

water for the offices.

Dust Control Systems secured the

contract to supply the new woodwaste

extraction system after demonstrating that

it could fully satisfy the stringent

requirements laid down by Silverwood. Ray

Townley of Dust Control Systems explains:

“The key demand was for an energy

efficient system that would fully integrate

with the waste-to-energy plant. Extraction

was to run automatically, without the need

for operator intervention, and bulk storage

was required to hold high volumes of

filtered waste – particularly at times when

space heating was not needed. Additionally,

extraction to each of Silverwood’s three

production lines had to operate

independently so, during night shifts for

example, when one or two lines may not be

required, they can be shut down without

affecting extraction on operational lines.”

The new extraction system installed by

DCS centres around a space saving unit

that combines a shaker filter and silo,

giving an airflow capacity of 45,000m3/hr

and 50m3 of waste storage. The filter

chamber incorporates a bank of tubular

polyester needlefelt filter bags, with

vibratory cleaning system, and waste

discharge is via a rotary valve which feeds

directly to the boiler feed transport system.

Each production line has its own high

efficiency fan set which operates

automatically on the starting of any

machine on the line. As automatic machine

dampers open and close, a DCS Dynamic

Drive System adjusts fan speeds to the

specific duty required.

Brian Guthrie, MD of Silverwood Doors,

says: “We now have an extraction system

that virtually looks after itself. Operators

don't even have to switch the extraction off

at lunch breaks; it stops automatically and

then goes through a cleaning cycle –

ramping up to full speed for a few seconds

to ensure ducts are clean. The silo gives us

plenty of waste storage so we can burn the

collected waste at a time to suit us and,

thanks to the variable speed control of the

fans, we only consume the precise kilowatts

required to do the job, so there’s no wasted

energy which has resulted in significant

cost savings.”

Leading dust extraction specialist

Wood Waste Control (Engineering)

has installed a new waste extraction

system at the High Wycombe campus of

Bucks New University.

The £43,000 extraction system replaces

an ageing unit that needed changing as part

of the University’s £62m campus

consolidation programme.

As part of a programme to construct new

buildings and car parking, and demolish

some older ones, the former system needed

to be relocated. The decision was taken to

renew the system at the same time.

“Bucks New University is one of the few

in the country that insists its furniture

design students are given the skills to make

as well as design their furniture ideas,” said

Ian Hunter, director of building and estates

at the University. “The old extraction

system was installed back in the 1960s by

Wood Waste Control and we have now

located its replacement closer to the

workshop, and further away from flats and

a hotel bordering our site,”

Following a specifying and tender process,

Wood Waste Control was appointed to

manufacture, supply and install the new

system. Wood Waste Control (Engineering)

Ltd is one of Europe’s leading waste extraction

specialists. The company is based in Bourne

End near High Wycombe and has hundreds

of successful installations across the UK, in

Europe, Russia and Africa. All Wood Waste

Control equipment is built to meet COSHH

legislation requirements and can stand alone

or be used in conjunction with total-extraction

return air heating systems.

Wood Waste Control managing director

Reg Gareppo said: “We specified a system

whereby waste is ducted from the workshop

to a WFS13/3HJ silo filter and then

transferred via a WRV100 rotary valve.”

The 36” P/B fan with 37.5kW motor sits

in an insulated case with a noise breakout

of 73dba at 1 metre.

Under the first phase of the replacement

programme the waste is transferred into a

bin which is regularly emptied by specialist

contractors. Ian Hunter said: “Our plans

for Phase II are for the waste to be burnt on

site in a biomass boiler system which will

generate heat for the campus.”

Wood Waste Control timed the

installation of, and switchover to, the new

system in such a way that student studies

were not disrupted in any way. “The

company performed well, “ said Ian

Hunter, “ and there was no production

downtime.

“The new unit is performing very much

better than the system it replaced.”

BOSE GP IRELAND, one the world’s

largest manufacturer’s of speakers and

home cinema systems has recently

invested in the purchase of a Talbotts

wood energy system to reduce their

wood waste Landfill charges and

energy costs.

The Talbott C6 1MW Warm Air system

provides factory space heating for areas up

to 50,000 sq.ft. whilst utilising

approximately 4800 kg per day of on site

generated wood waste.

Greg Tipping, Engineering Manager for

BOSE decided that investing in this

technology was one of the most effective

ways to reduce operational costs and with

project finance will achieve

a pay-back within 2 years.

After considering several manufacturers,

Talbotts were selected due to the company’s

established presence within the Irish

market and the assurance of the ability to

tailor the solution to satisfy customers’

needs in an efficient and cost effective

manner. The automated system

incorporates a 70m3 storage silo, Untha LR

1400 shredder, discharge and C6 warm Air

Heater, which has been integrated into a

dust extraction system provided by Air

Plants Dust Extraction of Leicester.

Greg Tipping comments “I am delighted

with the service given by Talbotts and the

quality of the system provided, we have

achieved consistent heat and wood waste

disposal since the unit was commissioned.

We have the added benefit of an SEI grant

towards the purchase of this

carbon-saving technology”

20-20 Technologies – Modular

Manufacturing Solutions have been

designed specifically for the cabinet

industry and cover a wide range of

products and services. They are

designed to provide an end-to-end

solution based on reliable and lean

manufacturing practices with software

implemented based on users’ business

processes, product configuration and

needs, versus an out-of-the-box

solution that requires businesses to

conform their processes to how the

software works.

New to the 20-20 Technologies range of

software is a ‘Integration Pack’ that works

in conjunction with 20-20 Product Planner

- a parametric cut listing program - which

facilitates the seamless importing of

products, both modular and custom sized,

included within kitchen and bedroom

design layouts created in the 20-20 Design

program.

The Integration Pack facilitates the

mapping of product information held in

20-20 Designs catalogue to those within

20-20 Product Planner which not only

enables details on the width, height, depth

and hinging of products to be automatically

passed across, but also other user defined

factors such as back-inset, quantity of

shelves, extended side left, right, both etc.

When products are imported into 20-20

Product Planner using the Integration Pack

they are placed in a Job tree, under a job

name with sub folders for, Base, Wall, and

Tall products etc. This enables designers to

specify different door styles, carcase types,

colours etc to groups of products, which is

extremely useful where door styles and

colours on wall cabinets are different from

those on base and or tall cabinets. This also

applies to carcase construction and colours.

With information imported from 20-20

Design into 20-20 Product Planner, the

smaller manufacturer will no doubt be

mainly interested in cut parts lists and door

requirements - be they manufactured in

house or purchased from a 3rd party - and

possibly the optimisation of parts from

sheets. Whereas the larger manufacturer

will no doubt want to batch jobs together,

produce cut parts lists by material type and

colour, list hardware by product, batch

optimise jobs, automatically produce

custom sized product drilling patterns for

parts, whilst producing product and part

bar code labels. All of which can be

achieved by implementing 20-20 Cut

Planner optimizer and 20-20 Drill Mate

programs, both of which have the ability to

link respectively to NC Saws and CNC

equipment from most all major

manufactures of this type of equipment on

the market today. Alternatively Nested

Based Manufacturing may well be preferred

which is also available when using 20-20

Drill Mate.

So what does this mean for the furniture

manufacturer? The beauty of these

programmes lies in their ability to reach out

to manufacturing operations of all sizes,

from the smallest to the largest factory, and

to streamline their design and manufacture

processes. The Integration Pack essentially

saves time by allowing users to stream

information from one programme to the

other without having to key in the same

information twice. This also cuts down on

labour and errors made during the re-

entering of information, which of course

reduces costs and increases profits. The

whole process becomes even more

streamlined where sales teams, retail

outlets and manufacturers all use the same

programmes – as designs can simply be

emailed to the manufacturer imported into

20-20 Product Planner with cultists created

and scheduled within minutes. It’s all about

using specialist computer programmes like

20-20 Product Planner to make the

business of manufacturing furniture

increasingly efficient and simple.

Factory Control Systems manages the

mushrooming information from CAD

systems to seamlessly manage your

factory.

The UK, like most of Europe, has seen

manufacturers offer more and more choice

to their customers in order to gain a

competitive advantage.

The cost of housing has risen

dramatically over the past 10 years leading

to homes becoming smaller. The current

recession is causing people to review the

available space in their current home and

consider redecorating their home where

they are unable to move house.

With area within the home at a

premium, storage needs to be maximised

with the use of custom sized cabinets to fit

every available space. This is valuable

opportunity for the fitted Kitchen,

Bedroom and Bathroom market targeted

by UK manufacturers. Manufacturers who

use Factory Control Systems software can

provide more customised furniture have a

real opportunity to substantially increase

their business while efficiently managing

the exponential complexity.

Once a Product name and possibly a

colour were sufficient to describe a piece of

furniture, now numerous pieces of

information are needed to describe each

item. This has caused a substantial quality

issue in ensuring this information is

accurate and complete as it moves from

CAD to manufacture. A typical fitted

furniture order will have a dozen or more

units each configurable for size, carcase

colour, door / drawer style and colour,

handing, handles, mirror type, lights etc to

name a few choices.

Having a method where options are

selected in a CAD system and transferred

Woodworking machinery suppliers and

installation specialists Daltons have

been awarded NICEIC registration for

standards achieved in their electrical

work when supplying and fixing

machinery in both industrial and

public authority arenas throughout

the UK.

The company have been working towards

this qualification for some time, their

preparatory work culminating in a series of

site work examinations together with

theoretical tests resulting in Daltons being

placed on the national register as an

approved contractor. This enables Daltons

to use the NICEIC logo which will be

applied to their fleet of service vans and will

be an important addition to the

company’s list of qualifications,

enabling them to

continue the

expansion of their

work in this area

nationwide.

The ever growing

Daltons service/ installation team, now

some 20 strong, together with specialist

transportation and machine handling

equipment take on installations,

commissioning and decommissioning of

machines and machine moving in addition

to their core business of supplying

woodworking machinery to both UK and

overseas markets.

The X-line ServoFlex 5 machine

launched at Ligna by Hoffmann is a 5-

axis saw, router and dowel drill.

The new machine has been designed to

optimise and rationalise the construction of

components in the most efficient way. The

operator can select machine cycles which

move machining heads to the determined

length position for processing. Both ends of

the workpiece are processed simultaneously

– sawing to length, angle routing of the

dovetail keyway lot and hole drilling for

dowels. Programming can be via manual

data input or download from a USB stick or

on-line network source.

The process is the same for any

workpiece profile – pre-cut blanks, flat

planed sections or profiled sections. The

fact that the ends are simultaneously

processed saves significant manufacturing

because the whole process only requires a

single clamping and the workpieces only

have to be handled once. A complete

machine cycle takes around 12 seconds.

The operator calls up machine cycles and

positions via an “intuitive” touch screen

control, heads move via a servo driven axis

over linear bearing guides which ensures

that all dimensions, angle and positions are

completely accurate. Router keyway slots

for the Hoffmann dovetail keys can be

individually selected for either one, 2 or

three slots as can the number of dowel

holes. The prepared workpiece is now ready

for the processing of the corner or frame

joint. Applications include all current

profiles for window manufacturing (butt,

mitre, dovetail/dowel, dovetail/screw and

dowel/screw joints). The new machine is

equally adept at producing components for

door and architrave sets, in-frame furniture

parts, Georgian bars and all simple or

complex mitre joints as well as butt joints.

The new Hoffmann X-line ServoFlex 5

can be easily modified and customised to

individual requirements and specifications.

If there were a prize on offer for a

company operating the widest variety

of Combilift models under one roof, it

would probably go to leading timber

supplier Timbmet’s site at Stanford in

the Vale in Oxfordshire, where 19

Combilifts are in operation.

The 200,000ft depot opened at the

beginning of 2008, and as Operations

Director Philip Trueman had had

experience of Combilifts working at other

Timbmet sites across the country, he knew

that these 4-way forklifts would be ideal for

handling the wide range of hardwoods,

timber, sheet materials, flooring and other

assorted products stored in the

warehousing areas. The more specific

choices facing him were which types of

Combilift to choose for optimum handling

of the very diverse nature and sizes of loads

and their respective storage systems.

The fleet comprises eleven five-tonne

trucks, ten of which were built with a

raised cab, three Combi-CB’s, three C3500

models, and two TeleCombis, fitted with a

telescopic boom. Common to all of these

according to Philip is their flexibility, speed

of operation and the ability to allow

Timbmet to maximise stock density by

operating in narrow aisles.

Timbmet was one of the first companies

to use Combilift’s latest product, the

Combi-CB, which is a very compact 4-way

counterbalance design truck, developed for

customers who deal with both palletised

and longer materials. Fitted with integrated

side shift, they come into their own when

handling Timbmet’s short width packs of

timber as well as longer length flooring.

They also work inside containers,

unloading around 10 of these on a daily

basis, before taking goods to cantilever

racking or the bulk store area. “The Combi-

CB’s have made all aspects of the

offloading, storing and reloading

procedure much quicker and easier,“

comments Philip.

Due to the volume of product passing

through the site, Philip was keen to find a

way of speeding up the transportation of

large packs of timber without

compromising on safety. Combilift

engineers developed a specially designed

C5000 with a higher than standard cab,

enabling drivers to have a clear line of

vision over a load of two packs of timber.

With 35 HGV’s to be loaded every day, this

has been of major benefit. Two of the high

cab trucks are also fitted with telescopic

forks for more stable handling of sheet

materials with a depth of 2.1m. The 4-way

ability of the Combilifts also allows block

stacking, which would not be possible with

a conventional sideloader.

The 3.5t capacity C3500 Combilifts work

in the picking area, and the TeleCombi

models are used primarily for offloading

continental tilt trailers. As the truck’s

boom can reach across the bed of the truck,

it can offload the complete consignment

from one side, again speeding up

operations and reducing waiting time for

delivery drivers.

All Combilifts are LPG powered – there

is a gas source on site, and refilling takes

just a few minutes. There is no issue with

fumes, as the closed loop exhaust keeps

emissions to an absolute minimum in

spite of a 24/5 working schedule mainly

indoors. “Considering the hours the

Combilifts put in, they have proved to be

extremely robust and reliable,” says Philip.

The range of trucks at Timbmet

exemplifies Combilift’s willingness to take

feedback from customers on board for

product development. Philip sums up:

“The nature of the products we handle is

changing - getting longer for example, and

Combilift’s customised approach, the

company’s attention to finer detail and the

ability to supply an extremely wide range

of attachments means that we have a fleet

perfectly equipped for the task in hand.”

Combilift 4-way forklifts are all designed

and built in Monaghan Ireland, where the

company also has its HQ and R&D facility.

The current Combilift range now

encompasses at least fifteen base models

with capacities ranging from 2.5 – 14

tonnes, with LPG, diesel or AC electric

power available. Combilift has won

numerous awards for its products since the

company was established in 1998, and

there are now over 10,000 units in

operation around the world.

Innovative products, flexible employees

and new services help company cope in

difficult economic environment

Fittings manufacturer Julius Blum

GmbH also felt the impact of the economic

downturn in the 2008/2009 business year

ended 30 June 2009. During this period,

the company achieved a turnover of 1,019.4

million euros. This is a decrease of 9% in

comparison to the previous business year.

Sales developed according to plan during

the first four months of the financial year.

They were on a par with those of the

previous year although certain markets

were a little weak. In November 2008 there

was a severe downturn in orders which was

unprecedented in company history in terms

of extent and speed. Aside from a few

exceptions, the slump affected all markets

and lasted until the end of the business year

in June 2009. The markets worst hit are

Spain, England, Scandinavia and the USA.

Even many markets in Eastern Europe and

Asia were affected by the decline in

economic activity.

Despite the difficult situation, it must be

said that the fittings manufacturer from

Hoechst did not dismiss any of its staff in

the last financial year. Nor did the company

resort to short-time working. On average,

the company employed 5,065 persons all

over the world throughout the year. Blum’s

vocational training scheme is also as

extensive as ever. 57 new apprentices will

start their technical apprenticeships with

Blum in September.

All investments carried outaccording to plan

Investments were neither delayed nor

postponed in the 2008/2009 financial year.

Building projects that were planned and

construction measures that had already

been begun were all carried out according

to schedule. The Zinc Diecasting

Department moved to the Plant 5 extension

in June 2009. From mid-August, Blum’s

new Plant 7 will accommodate Aventos

assembly lines and part of Dispatch. The

rail connection has also been finished.

Containers will be shipped by rail directly

from the plant to major ports.

Production facilities were expanded at

Blum USA to now comprise the full

assembly of Tandem (pull-out system for

wooden drawers). Two more sales offices

were opened in China, and another is

planned. Construction work was also

completed on the sales centre in France, the

fully automated high bay warehouse in

Milton Keynes (U.K.) and the new offices

and warehouse in Hungary. Work has also

begun on the new logistics centre in

Australia. Investments of the Blum Group

totalled 112.8 million euros in the

2008/2009 business year.

Innovative products are moreimportant than ever

Blum continued to focus on product

development in the last business year.

Thanks to customers’ excellent response to

fittings innovations, the company is

currently putting all its efforts into

implementing these latest developments.

“Perfecting motion” was the motto of

Blum’s presentation at Interzum, the

international trend-setting fair that is held

in Cologne every other year in May.

“Perfecting motion” describes Blum’s

efforts to perfect the motion of its pull-outs,

hinges and lift systems – in particular in

kitchens. In future, Blum will also

concentrate on electrically driven systems

that provide enhanced user convenience

and are currently all the trend.

Looking ahead to the2009/2010 business year

The 2009/2010 business year is likely to

be very difficult due to the unpredictability

of the global economy and the uncertainty

resulting from it. The situation on markets

has not yet stabilised, and it is extremely

difficult to forecast how things will develop

in autumn 2009. “In a good case scenario,

we believe that 2009/2010 development

will be flat because there is uncertainty

about how the economy will fair in

important individual markets,” underlines

managing director Gerhard E. Blum.

Nevertheless, the company hopes that its

innovations and international market

presence will somewhat compensate these

developments.

At a stroke, kitchen bedroom and

bathroom designers can offer all

customers floor to ceiling curved and

“S” shaped doors, now that Bellissimo

has brought out the UK’s first range

of full height vinyls in these options.

Bellissimo’s new range means full height

curves and “S” shapes are no longer

restricted to solid timber (which Bellissimo

also offers). The new doors are offered in

eight height options from the standard 715

and 895 mm right up to 2250 mm. All are

offered in Bellissimo’s |Saturn range of 50

finishes, ranging from high gloss and matt

solid colours to many varieties of

woodgrain – by far the widest choice in

the industry.

Also unmatched in the KBB sector is the

fact that Bellissimo offers wood finishes in

horizontal grain on curved and “S”

shaped doors.

Bellissimo managing director Warnock

Watson said: “I know the word unique is

over-used, but there is no other way to

describe these full-height curves for the UK

industry. The ability to finish a full-height

cabinet run with a pleasing curve, and to

insert ‘S’ shapes as a feature in a line of

doors, is significant for the designer in

terms of impressing the customer and

adding value. Until now these options have

been restricted to top-end solid timber

products. Horizontal woodgrain is another

distinguishing feature, which can totally

change the feel of a room. For example, the

visual impact of horizontal woodgrain on a

2250 mm wardrobe with curves at either

end is quite stunning – totally different

from a vertical grain – and a real

competitive advantage for the retailer.”

The curved doors are offered in 300 mm

and 400 mm widths, while the “S” shaped

doors come in 900 and 1200 mm widths.
