Panaray® SystemDigital Controller II Upgrades

Firmware Upgrade InstructionsThis application note describes the �rmwareupgrade procedure for the Panaray SystemDigital Controller II (PSDC-II). Bose ProfessionalSystems Division periodically releases �rmwareupgrades for system electronics components toaddress bug �xes or to update the equalizationcurve library. To �nd the latest version of�rmware and equalization curve library, go towww.pro.Bose.com and select the Panaray SystemDigital Controller from the list of products.

Before You BeginPrior to performing the upgrade procedure, makesure you have the following:

• Windows PC with serial port

• Serial (DB9) cable, male to female with straight-through (pin to pin) wiring

• The �rmware upgrade .zip �le

At this time, each �rmware release includes a Boseloudspeaker EQ database �le which describes equal-ization curves for currently supported products in aformat speci�c to the Panaray System DigitalController II. If you are updating your controller tosupport new loudspeakers, you must also upgradethe host �rmware.

For more information on current and past �rmwareversions, see page �ve of this application note.

To con�rm that the upgrade is necessary, check the�rmware version currently installed on your PanaraySystem Digital Controller II before beginning theprocess. This information is displayed on the con-troller’s front panel LCD during start up.

Connecting to the Panaray SystemDigital Controller IIThe following steps assume that you have down-loaded the Panaray System Digital Controller II�rmware and have extracted the .zip �le to yourlocal hard drive.

1. The �rmware upgrade process resets defaultsettings for items such as output gain level and EQ.It is recommended that you record the current set-tings below before initiating the upgrade. Use thisinformation to accurately restore settings once theupgrade is complete.

2. Connect the serial port of the PSDC-II to the serialport of the PC using the straight-through M-F DB9

3. Using the front panel power switch, power onthe PSDC-II while pressing and holding both the leftarrow and Select/Load buttons.

4. The words “Bose PSDCII 1.0 Firmware Update”will appear on the front panel LCD. The unit is now

5. A total of �ve HyperTerminal settings �les areincluded with the upgrade. Select the �le match-ing your PC serial connection COM port.

For example, if your PC has a built-in serial port,use the �le PSDC-II_via_COM1. If you are using aUSB-to-serial adaptor, �rst identify which COMport the adaptor is using, then select the appro-priate HyperTerminal settings �le before begin-ning the upgrade process.

In the PSDCII_1.49_Upgrade directory, double-clickthe appropriate HyperTerminal settings �le.

When the HyperTerminal �le is opened, theHyperTerminal program will initiate a connectionwith the PSDC-II.

Once communication is established, the status“Connected” is displayed in the lower left corner.

If “Connected” status is notdisplayed, click the “Call”icon (telephone icon in thenavigation bar at the top).

The connection status willbe displayed at the lowerleft corner of the mainapplication window.

Panaray System Digital Controller IIFirmware Upgrade The following steps assume that you have estab-lished a working serial connection between your PCand the PSDC-II using the provided HyperTerminalset-up �les.

1. From the Transfer menuselect “Send File.”

2. The Send File dialog willappear. Under the Protocoldrop down list, select “Zmodem.”

3. Click the “Browse…” button to locate and selectthe desired PSDC-II �rmware �le. (a40000.basic1.49.bin)

4. Click the “Send” button.

CAUTION! DO NOT unplug the cable, turn off the unit or cancel this program. Doing so could damagethe PSDC-II making it unrecoverable.

You can monitor the upload progress in the �letransfer dialog screen (below), or by checking thefront panel of the PSDC-II.

During the �rmware update process, the �le name,size, and progress will be displayed on the PDSC-IIfront panel LCD. Meter numbers will change, asshown below. Once the transfer is complete, thedisplay will return to the Firmware Upgrade screen.

5. Press the front panel “Standby” switch twice(OFF and ON) to cycle the power. The PSDC-II is nowready for the required EQ database upgradedescribed on page 4.

Bose Product Equalization Database Upgrade InstructionsBoth the �rmware and EQ �les must be updated inorder for the upgrade process to work properly. The following steps assume that you have alreadyupgraded the PSDC-II �rmware using the instruc-tions on page 3.

1. From the Transfer menuselect “Send File.”

2. The Send File dialog willappear. Under the Protocoldrop down list, select

3. Click the “Browse…” button to locate and selectthe desired PSDC-II �rmware �le (a60000_yukon1.16.bin).

4. Click the “Send” button.

If you cannot establish a connection between thePC and PSDC-II, check both the serial cable and theCOM port settings using the Device Manager.

The COM port settings will vary with the systemused, and must be enabled in order for this proce-dure to work. From within the Device Manager, youcan determine which COM ports are available andchange COM port assignments if necessary.
