Eighty-six-year old Violette Bragg is losing her eyesight to glaucoma. She has lived in the same Palo Alto house for the past 47 years and feels fortunate that she is so accustomed to

the space and that she lives with her son and daughter. Even with these advantages she says that she used to fall a lot. “I

was in Stanford four times,” she said. Bragg’s experience with falls is typical. Studies show that more

than one-third of all adults over 65 suffer a fall each year. Forty-six percent of Stanford’s emergency-room visits are older adults.

Many of these accidents could be avoided by taking pre-emptive remodeling action at home. Some of these actions are simple and intuitive and fall into the category of “why-didn’t-I-think-of-that?” Others involve some knowledge of design.

The Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Palo Alto assessed the safety of Bragg’s home.

The first thing they suggested was to remove all the scatter rugs, she said. “I had three in the bedroom and I once tripped and almost broke my foot,” she said. If throw rugs are used they should be secured with double-sided adhesives.

“The inspector got down on his hands and knees to make sure that there weren’t any loops in my living room rug,” Bragg said. He also recommended grab bars in the bathroom, a mat in the tub (“It feels nice and soft,” she said) and a hand-held shower hose.

Other bathroom suggestions include using a mounted liquid-soap

dispenser, plastic shower seat and non-shatter glass. Large blue and red buttons over the faucets can help distinguish temperature. Set-ting the water heater at 120 degrees will help avoid scalds and is probably a good idea for those with young children as well.

Of course, in the best of all worlds, a senior would have a curb-less shower and a bathtub with a rim wide enough to sit on to help ease into the water. Comfort-height toilets are a minimum of 18 inches high, and bars can either straddle the seat or pull down from the wall.

Bragg is very glad that she lives in a ranch-style home with easy access. For seniors who have to deal with staircases, suggestions include putting a light switch at both the bottom and top, securing rails and installing non-slip skids. Carpets of solid color are prefer-able to confusing patterns.

to distinguish, say, the edge of the kitchen counter (from the floor) or the edge of a chair (from the carpet).

“Ideally you want to have a color contrast between the wall and the floor because this helps with depth perception and balance,” Wolford said. “And the bottom molding should blend with the wall, not the floor, to avoid the perception that the floor level is higher than it is.”

If you’re not starting from scratch, a sim-ple “fix” for similarly colored floors and walls is to choose a contrasting color for the bottom molding.

“Look through a piece of yellow cello-phane and you’ll get an idea of how the ag-ing eye sees,” Wolford said. “The warmer colors — red and yellow — are seen more truly,” and the most difficult colors to dis-tinguish are blue and purple. Blue, laven-der and pink may all appear to be the same color.

Glass coffee tables with their poorly perceived edges are a hazard, especially if those edges are not rounded.

“Dark counter tops make it difficult to see things on them,” Wolford said. She also advises avoiding speckled patterns because seniors could lose their pills. Wolford points out that matte or textured are preferable be-cause they minimize glare, which is harsh on sensitive eyes.

“Most older homes don’t have good light-ing,” Wolford said. Not only is adequate lighting critical, it’s also important to make sure that it’s distributed evenly. “Avoid dark corners and drastic changes,” she warned.

Many seniors live with most of the fur-

niture they’ve accumulated and this can create narrow passages. Wolford advises weeding out, as well as simplifying furni-ture arrangement to create wider paths of travel. She also suggests using multi-func-tional furniture such as an end table that includes storage.

Cords and other tripping hazards must also be removed from traffic areas.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of re-orga-nizing. Bending down and/or using a stool could be inviting an accident, so things that are used regularly need to be within reach. The turkey platter that’s used once a year can be stored less conveniently.

Wolford recommends furniture with firm seats, sturdy arms and sufficient height to aid seniors in sitting and rising. Rugs, also, should not be plush because this inhibits walkers and wheelchairs — and just plain walking. Further, a thick carpet on stairs allows for less foot room.

“They’re now making thinner box springs,” Wolford said. This can help elim-inate the height issue imposed by a thick mattress. “Bed frames should not be on wheels and the headboard must be stable. And don’t use too many pillows because they tend to get thrown on the floor,” she added.

In order to achieve wider doorways — 36 inches and wider best accommodates a wheelchair — you can remove the door or get off-set hinges. Lever door handles and faucet handles are easier to manipulate than knobs. Similarly, rocker light switches are easier on arthritic or less supple hands.

“Do what you can,” Wolford said. “You don’t have to do everything. Doing some-thing is better than doing nothing.”

Dear Readers,

The turmoil in our financial markets is unsettling for a lot of would-be buyers. Many readers want to know how the situation will affect their ability to secure a home loan. Below are a few tips for obtaining a mortgage.

Before you meet with a mortgage broker: 1) Obtain a credit report, three years tax returns, and proof of current employment. 2) Pay off credit cards & car loans if possible. 3) Have at least a 25% down payment. 4) To get the best rate possible, give your loan package to at least two mortgage brokers and make sure they use local home appraisers. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Princeton Financial have plenty of funds to loan and offer excellent service.
