The Coconut palm is a tree which has long been the symbol of the tropics. Well-known for its versatility and the high-utility of its various parts, the coconut palm is considered a ‘tree of life’ in many cultures. Widely cultivated all along India’s coastal belt, including in Goa, the coconut tree and its many products have been an integral part of several cultures. Used in food, construction, toiletries, boat-making, house-hold products, decorative articles and more, the coconut palm is valued and utilized from top to tip. In spite of its value as a tree, the many products, by-products and parts of the coconut tree are not always used to their best potential. For example, coconut wood, which has been used to make canoes or architectural elements, is often overlooked as a choice for making more mainstream products like furniture. The straightness of its trunk, its resistance to salinity and good strength make it a great substitute to endangered hardwoods that are typically used for furniture-making. This workshop endeavors to re-look at the coconut palm in a contemporary context and redefine and refresh its reputation as a zero-waste, high-utility natural resource. The 10 day long workshop will focus on developing products using many of the products of the coconut palm such as, coconut wood, coir, palm fronds, coconut shells, etc. using various techniques in carpentry, weaving, inlaying, etc. The workshop will have a hands-on approach where participants will conceptualize ideas that combine various parts of the coconut tree and create products that are relevant to present-day users. These ideas will then be realized through the making of full scale prototypes.
