What are the qualities of an IB student?

The 10 aspirational qualities of an IB student provide a statement of values and define what is meant by the goal of being internationally minded. IB learners strive to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective.

Earn high school credit in middle school!

Students in years one to three can earn high school credit (Foreign Language, Earth/Environmental Science, Algebra I and Geometry). The high school classes are all taught at the Honors level in years four and five. If a student continues in the IB Programme for grades 11 and 12, all classes are taught at the college level and can possibly earn college credit.

How are standards maintained?

The International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, monitors IB schools around the world to ensure the integrity of its high standards.

Paisley students do well on N.C. End-of-Grade tests for middle school students. The high school students have the highest percentage of passing the End-of-Course tests in the school system. Paisley sophomores typically score 25% higher than their peers in both the state and nation on the PSAT.

Why IB and not some other highly accelerated school?

Data shows that fewer than 25% of high school students who take the ACT college-entrance exam possess the academic skills necessary to pass entry-level college courses. However, the Educational Policy Improvement Center found the IB curriculum to be highly aligned with the expectations of university faculty.

Wake Forest University Partnership

Wake Forest University actively supports our program through faculty development, classroom support, WFU library access, tutoring and participation in artist/lecture series.

Who can attend?

This challenging program demands the best of motivated students. Classes are taught at the most advanced level. Though many of our students are

certified Academically Gifted or Highly Academically Gifted, Paisley is open to all students, based on the belief that all deserve the best educational practices.

A Rigorous Program for Students in Grades 6-10

Paisley IB Magnet School is the only school in Forsyth County offering the prestigious International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) for grades 6-10, which are called years one through five at IB schools.

Colleges and universities all over the world recognize “IB” as the most rigorous and relevant education a student can receive.

What is IB?

International Baccalaureate (IB), founded in 1968, works with more than 3,000 schools in more than 140 countries. It was established to standardize curricula and promote the strongest instructional practices in schools attended by the children of diplomats and military personnel. The IB programme continues today, encouraging students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens.

How is the curriculum different?

IBMYP provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and to become critical and reflective thinkers.

Courses are taught using an interdisciplinary framework, Socratic Seminars and five unique lenses known as the Areas of Interaction: Health and Social Education, Environments, Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, and Human Ingenuity.

In year five, students complete a personal project, which is the culmination of the student’s experiences. It may be an artistic production, an essay or other form of expression, with the topic chosen in consultation with a faculty member who serves as a mentor. Students also perform at least 150 hours of community service during their five years at Paisley.

What do past students say?

The Paisley IBMYP Programme equipped me with the critical

thinking skills and the international perspective necessary to

be accepted in and excel at an Ivy League college, while

serving as a family that supported me along the way.

— Rafael Grillo, Princeton University

I became a more intelligent student, because of the skills,

habits and personal qualities Paisley helped me develop. The

IBMYP, along with the great faculty and staff, helped me take

those traits beyond Paisley and into high school and college.

— Julio Alvarado, Stanford University

Above all else, my Paisley MYP experience prepared me to

succeed. I learned to write effectively, think analytically and

work with all different people to accomplish a goal. The

opportunity to develop these skills early in my life has been

invaluable to me.

— Hannah Bagely, Brigham Young University

Studying with the talented students and teachers at the IB

Programme at Paisley gave me the confidence and direction

that I needed to succeed in the classroom and in my

community that I still carry with me today.

— Michael Jones, Yale University, City Alderman

What do college admissions directors think about IB?

Colleges appreciate the intense academic rigor that hallmarks

International Baccalaureate and celebrate a curriculum

that stresses curiosity, open-mindedness and creativity.

IB stretches students beyond their comfort zone and prepares

them for the demands of the college classroom.

— Martha Allman, WFU Director of Admissions, Parent of Paisley/Parkland IB Students
