What is the state of Mental Health amongst Young Muslims? The Muslim Youth Helpline recently conducted and published a new survey with more than 1,000 young British Muslims questioned on the status of their mental health, as well as on the access they do or do not have for mental health help.

Worryingly, the report found that 32 percent of of young British Muslims have suffered with suicidal thoughts, 52 percent have suffered with depression, 63 percent have struggled with anxiety whilst 40 percent of young men said they had spoken to no one about their latest mental health issue.

The organisation sought real data from public health and academic resources to help them map out the needs of young British Muslims.

Unfortunately, they found that currently no such research exists, therefore, they set about asking the question: ‘What is the state of mental health among young British Muslims in the UK?’

With this as their core aim, they developed this survey, spread it as far and wide as they could on social media and via their network of contacts, received over 1,000 responses.

It is hoped that by generating this data, a benchmark can be set for future research and for dedicated professionals to build on these findings.

Zohra Khaku, a Director of the Muslim Youth Helpline believes the report is a vital data point in tracking the mental health of young British Muslims along with the fact that respondents did not reach out for help highlights the need to tackle stigma.

However, she also highlighted Islamophobia as a possible key factor which could have been a contributing factor for many Muslims who developed mental health issues.

“The link between Islamophobia and Muslims’ mental health has also been recognised. Muslims do not openly discuss their fears and concerns regarding mental health because of

potential Islamophobia, so they are less likely to seek mental health services,” Khaku told Paigaam.

“In general, there is a fear held by many Muslims of being “doubly stigmatised”, both by the Muslim community for having a mental illness and by the rest of the population for being non-white and Muslim.

“The current political climate has created a great deal of negative debate and the stigmatisation of visible Muslims has surely affected the mental health of many young Muslims.

“Faith based data is currently not available in the field of mental health yet there is a clear need for better access to mental health services. We call on future mental health surveys to build on these findings.

Khaku also lamented the lack of positive Muslim role models along with youngsters succumbing to peer pressure and bullying.

“Societal pressures along with youngsters who are verbally and physically abused for their religious beliefs whilst certain elements within the media portray Muslims as terrorists can be very disheartening, whilst many graduates find it rather difficult to find a job and this can also have a detrimental effect on the individual along with their families.”

IMWS Deputy Chair, Mohammed Laher believes the figures showcase an enormous need for the Muslim community to support mental health support initiatives.

“Many young British Muslims, even if acknowledging their own mental health issues, then struggle with finding help or finding a community willing to discuss ways to help support those suffering from mental health issues.

“As shown in the collected statistics, this feeling of hopelessness can often lead to having nowhere to turn to when experiencing low mental health. Many spoke of the long waiting lists for therapists, as well as poor cultural sensitivity from their GPs in many

cases.

”With new reports like these highlighting the importance of discussing and providing help with mental health issues, let us hope that our community becomes more open about discussing mental health in general.

“As this generation of younger Muslims make their way to adulthood they are faced with all the same challenges of growing up as their peers, combined with the added complexity of their unique cultural and contextual factors.

British Child and Adolescent Mental Health Surveys also found that 1 in 10 children and young people under the age of 16 had a diagnosable mental disorder.

With such a significant incidence in the formative years of these young people’s lives it is not surprising that 50% of mental illness in adult life (excluding dementia) starts before age 15 and 75% by age 18.

The long lasting effects of poorly treated mental health disorders and its significant impact on adult mental health has led to the development of many advocacy groups and support services but unfortunately, there remains an average of a 10 year delay before young people are able to access effective services and up to 75% of young people are still not receiving treatment.

Whilst all these statistics remain relevant to the wider population, what of the mental health of young Muslims in the UK? The unfortunate answer is we simply do not know. Apart from the survey conducted by The Muslim Youth Helpline, there is no published data addressing the incidence of mental health amongst this community in the UK, reflecting a wider research gap.

The Chief Medical Officer’s report on young people’s health also stated that despite the censuses showing a further increase in the diversity of black and minority ethnic (BME) groups in the UK there remains relatively little research on the relationship between ethnicity and child mental health.

South Asians are the least likely to be referred to specialist services, even in regions where they form the BME group most frequently consulting primary care providers.

Whilst the gap in BME research is slowly being corrected, there remains a great deficit of research regarding religion and mental health.

The existing literature shows that in the UK some Muslims can experience a higher prevalence of common mental health disorders, which are more chronic than in the general population.

A spokesperson for Muslim Youth Help told Paigaam, they hoped this report provides some insight into the state of young Muslims’ mental health.

“Muslim Youth Helpline is always open to collaboration. If we can help with our insights in any way, or for further questions or insight on this report, please do get in touch at [email protected]. You can also reach out on Twitter @muslimyouthhelp or LinkedIn.”

Naeem Valli, who works for Chart Kirklees, an organisation which offers a free and confidential drug and alcohol recovery service for adults in Kirklees, believes substance abuse is also a major issue within the community.

He told Paigaam: “People need to understand that substance abuse definitely has an effect on mental health as drug and alcohol use can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental health.

“It definitely is an issue within our community and there any many people who have been affected.”

Naeem also decried the presumption that Cannabis is a safe or low-level drug, citing research suggesting otherwise.

“The use of Cannabis and mental health are intertwined. Cannabis use has links to schizophrenia, paranoia and agoraphobia. When I first started 13 years ago, there was no evidence to suggest this. However, now the evidence Is there, and it is a fact.”

Multifaith cemetery clean up billed a great successA difference of faith has not stopped a number of individuals taking part in a multi faith graveyard clean up.

Cemetery Project 2020 teamed up with The Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery Group and transformed Dewsbury Cemetery into place where people from a plethora of backgrounds can pay their respects to beloved family and friends who are no longer on this mortal coil.

Mohammed Javed, just one of the dedicated volunteers told Paigaam about how multi-cultural members of the public chipped in and dutifully cleaned the graveyard on the 2nd of February.

“We started the group in order to tackle the concerns of residents who were concerned with the state of the graveyard,” said Mr. Javed.

“Going to the grave is a reality that we all have to face and the formation of the group was a long time coming but it has been very positive thus far.”

Mohammed explained how Cemetery Project 2020 has the backing of The Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery who have welcomed them with open arms.

“Christine Leeman of The Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery has been very welcoming. She told us about how they would only get around a total of three people to help them clean up and understandably it just was not enough to make a difference as they have very limited resources and time

“However, Christine has appealed to the non-Muslim community as a whole and although previously people did not seem to want to engage, many people from an array of backgrounds worked together to make a difference.

“We work alongside them well and its nice to see the community coming together. It has been a long time coming and it is good to see a fundamental multi faith and multi-cultural element to this and its good that we all work together to look after these places.”

The clean-up itself was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction with all who attended greeted with smiles and nods of appreciation from other

people who also attended, not to mention one kind-hearted individual who turned up in a mini van full of gastronomical delights.

“We saw a van at the top of the hill, and we thought it was someone who wanted to sell food to us as many people had toiled for hours,” said Mohammed.

“However, the brother simply opened up and fed everyone, giving out samosas, kebabs, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks along with hot and cold snacks, I was just overwhelmed with the generosity.

“In the past people have donated over twenty tonnes of gravel along with ten tonnes of soil in order to make sure graves are not left looking unkept and we try to make it easy for those who have lost their loved ones.

“We’ve also had over two large skips with 4 transit vans – all helping to transport the rubbish out of there along with a local breakdown company and stonemasons providing their services to people putting benches and bird boxes in to make a real improvement.

“But on this particular occasion, we somehow superseded the last clean-up as so many more people turned up to help, providing even more skips, transit vans and anything else you can name.”

Mohammed said Cemetery Project 2020 appealed to the entire community to help via Facebook and other channels.

He could not help but say how proud he was how the clean-up unfolded along with the camaraderie and positivity amongst the diverse group of volunteers.

“It was really good to see people coming over from as far as Huddersfield, Bradford and Heckmondwike and Batley to help us out and try to enable us to make a real difference for people who visit the cemetery and allow them to pay their respects in an environment which is befitting of nonchalance and remembrance.”

This however is only the beginning for Cemetery Project 2020 with the

team discussing extending the project throughout the area and possibly beyond.

“We have plans to extend the project in Batley, Heckmondwike, Huddersfield and beyond as it is a very noble cause. People are donating and I am proud that the Muslim community has come together and made a real difference.

“May I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who took part and gave their time to us, may the almighty reward you all in this life and the hereafter.”

Anyone who would like to take part or get involved with the project can call Mohammed Javed on: 07714837167.

Learning success at IMWS!IMWS delivers a range of ESOL and confidence based courses at the Al-Hikmah Centre. We have an experienced ESOL specialist to deliver courses such as Driving Theory / Life in the UK with ESOL support, A2/B1 exam preparation courses for visa extension and indefinite leave, and ESOL classes from beginners to higher levels.

In October we had a very successful open day working with partners from Learning Curve, WEA and our IMWS Women’s Committee to get people interested in trying news courses. We had an overwhelming demand for Childcare and ESOL courses. To meet this growing need we have started to deliver a range of courses which include:

ESOL A2/ B1 Preparation courses: The A2/B1 Exam offered in Leeds by Trinity College London is the official exam that needs to be passed for anyone who wants to apply for Visa extension or Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

The speaking and listening exam is daunting and our preparation courses have proven most effective in building confidence and knowledge to pass the exam first time.

Lots of students have completed the course and thoroughly recommend it to others! We have new classes starting in January – contact us for more details.

Talk English and ICT pilot: On this beginner’s ESOL course 15 learners joined the course and are half way through their learning. They have also mastered the basics of using a computer and using the internet using some great resources by Learn My Way.

JAM’E MASJID HOLDS 9th ANNUAL YOUTH CONFERENCEWith the grace of the Almighty, Jam’e Masjid, Henry Street, Batley hosted their Ninth Annual Youth Conference in January. The Conference is arranged for people of all ages to acquire the true and beautiful teachings of Islam in the environment of the Masjid.

Starting from Asar namaz the Conference attracted hundreds of people from vaious towns and cities of the UK.

This included the young, old and many Ulema with hundreds more mothers and sisters tuning in at home, there was a sign language service provided too.

Between Asar and Maghrib, there were three bayans starting with the Imam of Jame Masjid Maulana Mohammed Mota Saheb where he discussed the importance of making dua and effort for hidaayah (spiritual guidance).

Thereafter Maulana Abubakr Diwan Sahib gave an interesting insight into what life was life for the earliest

pioneers and settlers back in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

He is currently working as part of a team who are compiling this early history and the lessons that current and future generations need to take from these pioneers.

Finally, Hadhrat Maulana Abdurrauf Saheb shared his words of wisdom with the gathering.

After Maghrib, Maulana Dr. Mahmood Chandia Saheb from Bolton talked about the importance of learning and holding onto our Islamic values citing Imam Abu Haneefah (RA) example of philanthropy and honesty in business.

The second speaker after Maghrib was Maulana Abdul Haleem Saheb from Bradford, in his customary and forthright manner, Maulana talked about the dangers and pitfalls of young people who become embroiled in “Thug Life” and the best way to counter such influence was to keep in the company of the Masjid and the pious.

After Isha Salaah, the final bayaan was by the guest speaker Hadhrat Maulana Muhammad Saleem Dhorat Saheb (DB) from Leicester, Maulana is well known nationally and internationally for his work and efforts for the rectification of people’s lives.

Maulana Saleem Saheb gave an inspirational talk. He mentioned how we should be concerned about correcting/improving our past, present and future. One can do istighfaar (seek repentance) for the past and to improve our present and future by practicing Sabr and Shukr (Patience and Gratitude).

Finally, the ICWA Management Committee would like to thank all the speakers and all the volunteers who assisted in any shape or form.

We pray to the Almighty that he grants everyone Hidayat, accepts everyone’s efforts and grants sincerity and longevity (Aameen).

Letter: Our Children Need our HelpFor several years now I have worked with young children (pre-school aged) who have additional needs.

These are of varying complexity, ranging from mild to severe and can be emotional, psychological or physical.

As I work in the local community, the majority of my families are from the Indian/ Pakistani ethnic group, like myself.

Over the years, my role has left me feeling extremely frustrated and demoralised - today I feel I wish to share with you some of the reasons why.

I am not doing this to vent, rather to raise awareness of what is happening in our community, right under our very noses, in the hope that maybe I can have a small positive effect.

Even if one person changes their outlook, this article will not have been in vain.

So, without a doubt, the parents I visit, whose children have additional needs, are truly unsung heroes of a special ilk.

Often, they are providing round the clock medical care, without any respite for themselves.

People fail to realise that for many of these parent carers, they likely will not remember the last time they had time to themselves, or had a full night’s sleep, a meal in peace or even something as simple as a relaxing bath.

Small things which we take for granted.

Small things, which if left unchecked, soon become the BIG things. What soon becomes apparent is the pervading LACK of any support from family, friends or the wider community.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not every family I visit.

However, it pains me to say, this is the case many many times.

The difficulties faced by these families is then confounded by a truly distressing amount of stigmatising, by the community, of such families.

The parents are made to feel as though they have done something ‘wrong’ to warrant having such children.

Do they not see, what a gift from the creator these beautiful special innocent souls are?

Think about it, the last time you attended a local wedding, how many children / adults with additional needs did you see /interact with? Why have they become the hidden community within our community?

What have they done to deserve this?

What answer will we give when we are questioned how we helped our neighbours, how we made life easier for someone who was struggling? Wake up brothers and sisters.

Stop hiding behind prejudices and narrow minded cultural barriers. We are the ummah of a Prophet (PBUH)who showed us the essence of true love and service in the path of others.

Let’s honour that calling and show compassion and lend a helping hand wherever we can.

American billionaire philanthropist George Soros has Lambasted Narendra Modi’s BJP led government, labelling the Indian Prime Minister’s attempt to create a Hindi nationalist state as a the biggest and “most frightening setback.”

Whilst while addressing an event at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where he addressed a plethora of global, political and technological issues, Hungarian born Soros lamented the rise of nationalism making headway in India.

He was referring to two controversial decisions made by Mr Modi’s Hindu nationalist government.

The first was to strip the disputed Kashmir region of its semi-autonomous status and place it under virtual lockdown.

The second is the introduction and passage of a controversial citizenship law that critics say is discriminatory towards Muslims.

It seeks to fast-track Indian citizenship to non-Muslim minorities from three nearby Muslim-majority countries.

“Nationalism, far from being reversed, made further headway,” said Soros.

“The biggest and most frightening setback occurred in India where a democratically elected Narendra Modi is creating a Hindu nationalist state, imposing punitive measures on

Kashmir, a semi-autonomous Muslim region, and threatening to deprive millions of Muslims of their citizenship.”

The billionaire investor also hit out at Donald Trump and his government labelling him as the “ultimate narcissist”.

Speaking on Trump, George Soros said, “President Trump is a con man and the ultimate narcissist who wants the world to revolve around him. When his fantasy of becoming president came true, his narcissism developed a pathological dimension. Indeed, he has transgressed the limits imposed on the presidency by the Constitution and has been impeached for it.”

He also accused Trump of ‘overheating the American economy, pouring scorn on the President’s economic ideals.

“An overheated economy can’t be kept boiling for too long,” he said. “If all this had happened closer to the elections, it would have assured his re-election. His problem is that the elections are still 10 months away and in a revolutionary situation, that is a lifetime.”

The philanthropist who made his billions in the markets, also reiterated his criticisms of other alleged autocrats. He branded as dictators both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary - Soros’ native country.

The businessman - who is a major donor to the US Democratic party – also

said Beijing and Washington posed the biggest threat to “open societies” despite the fact that the US and China recently struck a deal to de-escalate a major trade war which has seen both sides impose tariffs on billions of dollars worth of exports.

“Xi Jinping is eager to exploit Trump’s weaknesses and use artificial intelligence to achieve total control over his people.

“Both [leaders] try to extend the powers of their office to its limit and beyond.

However, Soros also said that he is injecting $1 billion into a new university network that the 89-year-old billionaire investor calls the “most important and most enduring project of my life,” which it is hoped, will help tackle intolerance.

“And I would like to see it realised while I am still around,” he told journalists on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The move will be seen as a response to Hungarian President Victor Orban, who has repeatedly tried to shut down the Central European University, a private institution set up by Mr Soros in the country in 1971.

Mr Orban’s right-wing nationalist government claims Mr Soros has a secret plot to flood Hungary with migrants and destroy the nation, an accusation Mr Soros denies.

Billionaire George Soros’ attacks Narendra Modi’s Hindu Nationalist vision for India

American troops left with traumatic brain injuries after Iran air base attackThe Pentagon has said that 34 US troops were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) following an Iranian attack on their base in Iraq.

Seventeen troops are still under medical observation, a spokesman said.

President Donald Trump had said no Americans were injured in the 8 January strike, which came in retaliation for the US killing of an Iranian general.

Mr Trump had cited the supposed lack of injuries in his decision not to strike back against Iran.

the Pentagon said service members had been treated for concussion symptoms from the attack.

Asked about the attack by the Iranians, Mr Trump said: “I heard that they had

headaches, and a couple of other things, but I would say, and I can report, it’s not very serious.”

“I don’t consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries I have seen,” he said.

The Pentagon says no Americans were killed in the Iranian missile strike on the Ain al-Asad base, with most sheltering in bunkers as missiles rained down.

Defence department spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters that eight of the affected soldiers have been sent back to the US for further treatment, while another nine are being treated in Germany.

Sixteen troops were treated in Iraq and one in Kuwait before all 17 were returned to active duty, officials say.

Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, a non-profit organisation, slammed the Trump administration for taking so long to reveal the extent of casualties.

“This is a big deal,” its founder Paul Rieckhoff tweeted. “The American people must be able to trust the government to share information.”

TBIs are common in warzones, according to the US military.

They are classified as mild, moderate, severe or penetrating. A mild TBI is also known as a concussion, and can be caused by a blast’s “atmospheric over-pressure followed by under-pressure or vacuum”.

Iraq’s parliament has urged foreign fighters - including the US - to leave.

Adult’s Puzzles

FOUR’ is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same num-ber of letters as the number itself.

Americans called mathe-matics ‘math’, arguing that ‘mathematics’ functions as a singular noun so ‘math’ should be singular too.

From number 0 to 1000, the letter ‘A’ only appears in 1000 – ‘one thousand

The equal sign ‘=’ was in-vented by an English mathe-matician in 1557. In his book Robert Recorde explains: ‘…to avoid the tedious rep-etition of these words: “is equal to”, I will set (as I do often in work use) a pair of parallels, or Gemowe lines, of one length (thus =), because no two things can be more equal.’

The only number in Eng-lish that is spelled with its letters in alphabetical order

Brexit: What to expect Some people will celebrated when Brexit finally took place at11pm on January 31.

Others would have been a little upset, whilst for others, they were just glad it’s all over.

However, what does Britain leaving the European union mean for you?

Transition

During the transition period, the UK will continue to have full access to the EU’s single market and customs union, just as we do now. This is important, because it allows UK-based businesses to continue trading with the EU without restrictions.

It also means that the UK will have to continue to obey EU rules and regulations.

The real change will come once the transition period ends. That’s when the UK will begin a new trading arrangement with the EU.

The transition period is currently due to end on 31 December 2020, and while it could in theory be extended in theory, Mr Johnson has said he will not agree to any delay.

A few things, will change straight away.

No more MEPs

The UK no longer has any Members of the European Parliament - MEPs. The three North East MEPs (two from the Brexit Party and one from Labour) have lost their jobs.

And British government ministers, including the Prime Minister, will no longer be invited to attend the European Council or other EU meetings.

It does mean that during the transition period we will be stuck with EU rules that we no longer have any control over.

However, there’s no reason to think anything dramatic is going to change between January 31 and December 31.

New passports

If you get a new passport, it will now be solely a British passport - and will no longer state “European Union” on the front. Eventually, the UK is toreturn to the old navy blue passport design that was in place before the EU introduced Burgundy passports (though the EU only “recommended” that member states use Burgundy, and didn’t actually force us to change).

Negotiating trade deals

And Brexit will mean the UK can begin talks about a trade deal with other countries in earnest.

Under EU rules, we weren’t allowed to hold detailed talks with nations such as the US about trade treaties.

While it’s clear that discussions have been taking place on some level, it’s only after we leave that official negotiations can begin.

Government spending spree

The Government is expected to embark on a bit of a spending spree.

The Chancellor, Sajid Javid, have been talking about spending billions on infrastructure in the Midlands and the North.

But it’s had to wait until after Brexit, which has been the focus of attention within Downing Street and Parliament up to now.

Will Myanmar Comply With The U.N. Court’s Order to Protect The Rohingya? The United Nations’ top court ruling against Myanmar is sure to increase international pressure on the country to protect its much persecuted Muslim Rohingya minority.

However, it was still unclear as to what the country’s response would be as the government’s rather conspicuous silence on the issue apart from a few murmurs to deny the widely documented killing and persecution of the Rohingya by Myanmar’s military amounted to genocide, whether they will implement the ruling, remains to be seen.

The question now is whether Myanmar will comply.

Myanmar’s military has systematically targeted Rohingya in the western state of Rakhine, which since 2017 has driven more than 700,000 people across the border into Bangladesh. Rights groups documented mass killings, rape and the burning of entire villages.

More than 100,000 Rohingya have been forced into camps within Myanmar, many of them in waves of violence that predated the 2017 campaign.

Brig. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for Myanmar’s military said in a brief interview that they would “cooperate with the government and will work under the guidance of the government” in response to the ruling. He did not elaborate further.

Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry issued a short statement after the ruling on Thursday that did not address the court’s order, but repeated the government’s denial that the Rohingya had been subjected to genocide.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s de facto civilian leader — a Nobel Peace laureate who has defended the military against the genocide accusations — has also more often that not – remained silent on the issue.

Lawyers for the African nation of Gambia, which brought the case, said the undisputed decision by the 15-judge panel had gone beyond even what Gambia had asked for.

Tellingly, Myanmar and Gambia were each allowed to appoint a member of the panel, with Myanmar’s very own representative — Claus Kress, a German law professor — siding with Gambia.

“This is an important ruling for a number

of reasons,” said Carla Ferstman, a senior lecturer at the Human Rights Center at the University of Essex. She said the decision “means it won’t be enough for Myanmar to just avoid doing bad things. It must take active steps, and then prove it has done so, with a clear timetable for reporting.”

But for all of the condemnation by the United Nations, rights groups and various governments, the case brought by Gambia is actually the first international court ruling against Myanmar since the atrocities began.

“The court confirmed that no matter where genocide occurs, it’s a matter for the entire international community, and that a state does not have to be connected or affected by the genocide in order for them to take action to prevent, end and punish it,” said Akila Radhakrishnan, president of the New York-based Global Justice Centre.

Gambia, which brought the case on behalf of the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation, has asked the court to declare that Myanmar has violated the Genocide Convention. That decision could be years away.

But in its ruling, the court ordered Myanmar to take steps to prevent acts of genocide against the 600,000 Rohingya estimated to remain in the country, and to prevent the destruction of any evidence of genocide.

Going further than Gambia had asked, the court also ordered Myanmar to file a report every six months until the case is resolved, spelling out what it has done to protect the Rohingya. (Gambia had asked only for a single report.) The first report is due in four months.

The court has no enforcement powers, but the United Nations Security Councilcan act on its findings. The world body’s secretary-general, António Guterres, welcomed the ruling and said he would transmit it to the Security Council.

Ms. Radhakrishnan said that if Myanmar disobeyed the order, it could mean an end to the “shocking level of leniency” she said the country had enjoyed on rights issues since its transition to partial democracy.

“Now, the failure to comply with such a clear legally binding order would have the potential to change this dynamic and have Myanmar face real consequences,” she said.

The genocide case has pit predominantly Muslim Gambia, against Myanmar, which has yet to fully emerge from decades of military control.

“It is a very strong decision and it has given hope to Rohingya around the world,” said Arsalan Suleman, who was a diplomat in President Barack Obama’s State Department and is now an attorney on Gambia’s legal team. He praised Gambia’s “moral leadership” at a time when, he said, it often seems lacking on the global stage.

“You have a country in Africa, not an extremely well-developed country, but a country that really cares about human rights and dignity, and it has made it a national concern to fight for the Rohingya,” Mr. Suleman said.

Dr. Ferstman, of the University of Essex, said the ruling amounted to “a good day for smaller nations, for less powerful groups, who doubt they can also achieve justice.”

“Today, we have seen that the system can work for all and Gambia — a country with no direct link to Myanmar — should be applauded for bringing this case,” she said.
