After the December 19 meeting between the Con-gress leadership, in effect the Gandhis, and aclutch of so-called dissenters (the G-23), neither

side appears to have come away with satisfaction. It isnecessary to maintain form and not be carried away bynoise, especially in the media whose fundamental pur-pose these days appears to be to discomfit the oppo-nents of the ruling dispensation. And yet, what havethe Gandhis done?As usual, they do not speak to the people. They haveeagerly embraced the vice of non-communication,which in politics is like popping the cyanide pill. Theydo not take the country into confidence about whatthey think of the current state of the Congress, the go-ings-on in the party, possible plans for its rejuvenation, and plans for the country. It is said the process is on to elect the party presidentafter about 20 years. But what’s happening on thatfront? No one seems to know. Isn’t the matter of inter-est to India? Angry tweets or two-line criticisms of thePrime Minister or the BJP government made by someof the Gandhis, even when valid, have failed to enthusebecause these lack gravitas. These are not efforts in awider ecosystem of consciously working toward build-ing a political and an ideological momentum by theOpposition to take on the ruling dispensation. The Congress may well be the only all-India challengerto the ruling dispensation, if that is by now not a hyper-bole, considering how few the elected representativesof the party are in the country. But does the party de-serve that tag when it does not let on how it proposesto go about the task of challenging? And what of the G-23? In the main, these appear to bea bunch of time-servers who whine because, when theparty is in the Opposition, they cannot get to high-sounding posts. They have been out of power six yearsand fear the worst in the next election. So, they seem tobe angling to throw Rahul and Priyanka out of theequation and get to be in positions of decision-makingthemselves. Barring Kapil Sibal, none amongst themraised the question of party elections and inner-partydemocracy when the Congress was in power and thegravy train chugged along. Most of them are a liberal, educated lot. But not many amongst them, barringShashi Tharoor and possibly Manish Tewari, can hopeto clear the field in any election where there would belakhs of voters. The G-23 grumble about leadership.

Literature & HealthAnxiety among majority of

people due to COVID-19, findsJapanese govt survey

AJapanese government survey hasfound that there is anxiety amonga majority of people due to

COVID-19 pandemic. The online surveydone by the country's health ministry inSeptember covered over 10,000 people,in which the government asked themhow the pandemic affected their mentalhealth, NHK World reported.

The results released earlier thismonth show that nearly half of the par-ticipants were concerned throughout thesurvey period between February andSeptember. The number reached its peakbetween the month of April and May.

According to the Japan BroadcastingCorporation, this trend is in "tandemwith the pace of infections."

On a question about what worriedthe participants throughout the pandem-ic, over 60 per cent expressed fear thatthey and their families could be infected.

Answering a question about any changein lifestyle, as many as 39.1 per centsaid they have been exercising less sincethe start of the virus.

As per the country's public broad-caster, the survey supports argumentsthat the COVID-19 has put a psycholog-ical strain on the public. In view of theimpact caused by the pandemic, thecountry's health ministry said they willstep up measures to provide psychologi-cal care.

According to Johns Hopkins Univer-sity, there 218,453 cases of infection inthe country. Starting Monday, Japan willsuspend entry of foreigners to containthe spread of a new strain of virus firstdiscovered in the United Kingdom, theKyodo news agency reported.

On Friday, Japan has registered thefirst cases of the new strain of the coron-avirus.

Edical workers, nursinghome residents andpoliticians are set to be

vaccinated against the coron-avirus across the EuropeanUnion on Sunday, part of aneffort by the bloc's 27 na-tions to roll out shots in a co-ordinated and equitable fash-ion.

European CommissionPresident Ursula von derLeyen released a video cele-brating the vaccine rollout, calling it a touching momentof unity in the battle to pro-tect the bloc's nearly 450million people from theworst public health crisis in acentury. As it turned out, some EU immunisations be-gan a day early in Germany,Hungary and Slovakia. Theoperator of a German nurs-ing home where dozens ofpeople were vaccinated onSaturday, including a 101-year-old woman, said everyday that we wait is one daytoo many. The rollout marksa moment of hope for a re-gion that includes some ofthe world's earliest andworst-hit virus hot spots Italyand Spain and others like theCzech Republic, which werespared earlier in the yearonly to see their health caresystems near collapse in thefall. It also should ease frus-trations that were buildingup, especially in Germany, asBritain, Canada and theUnited States kicked off theirinoculation programs withthe same vaccine weeks ear-lier. Altogether, the EU's 27nations have recorded atleast 16 million coronavirus

infections and more than336,000 deaths huge num-bers that experts still agreeunderstate the true toll of thepandemic due to missed cas-es and limited testing.

The first shipments ofthe vaccine developed byGermany's BioNTech andAmerican drugmaker Pfizerwere limited to just under10,000 doses in most EUcountries, with its mass vac-cination programs expectedto begin only in January. Each country is deciding onits own who will get the firstshots. Spain, France and

Germany, among others, arevowing to put the elderly andresidents in nursing homesfirst.

In Italy, which has Eu-rope's worst virus toll at over71,000 dead, a nurse inRome's Spallanzani Hospital, the main infectious diseasesfacility in the capital, will bethe first in the country to re-ceive the vaccine, followedby other health personnel.Poland is also prioritisingdoctors, nurses and others onthe front lines of fighting thevirus. The central Europeannation was largely spared the

surge that badly hit WesternEurope in the spring, but hasbeen hit by high daily infec-tions and deaths this fall. EUleaders are counting on thevaccine rollout to help thebloc project a sense of unityin a complex lifesaving mis-sion after it faced a year ofdifficulties in negotiating apost-Brexit trade deal withBritain. It's here, the goodnews at Christmas, said Ger-man Health Minister JensSpahn. This vaccine is thedecisive key to end this pan-demic ... it is the key to get-ting our lives back. Among

politicians who plan to getvirus shots on Sunday, as away of promoting a wideracceptance of vaccinations, are Slovakian PresidentZuzana Caputova and Bul-garian Health MinisterKostadin Angelov.

Meanwhile, the first cas-es of a new virus variant thathas been spreading rapidlyaround London and southernEngland have now been de-tected in France and Spain. The new variant, whichBritish authorities said ismuch more easily transmit-ted, has caused European

countries, the United Statesand China to put new restric-tions on travel for peoplefrom Britain. The Germanpharmaceutical companyBioNTech is confident thatits coronavirus vaccineworks against the new UKvariant, but said further stud-ies are needed to be com-pletely certain. The Euro-pean Medicines Agency onJanuary 6 will be consider-ing approving a second coro-navirus vaccine, this one byModerna, which has alreadybeen approved for use in theUnited States.

Historic day in virus fight

Areview and a pooleddata analysis has foundthat smartphone fitness

apps and wearable activitytrackers do help boost physi-cal activity levels.

The review published on-line in the British Journal ofSports Medicine.

The size of the effect issmall to moderate, but it maybe worth offering them onprescription to motivated pa-tients, given the importancefor the health of increasingdaily physical activity by anyamount, say the researchers.

Globally, more than aquarter of adults don't meetrecommended physical activi-ty levels. Physical inactivityrepresents a leading cause ofdeath worldwide and isthought to cost billions of dol-lars every year.

Some of the most effec-tive strategies to increasephysical activity include be-haviour change techniques, such as self-monitoring andfeedback, which smartphoneapps and wearable activitytrackers can provide.

Smartphone ownership iswidespread, with activitytrackers and fitness apps usedby around a third of US andUK adults. But the reviews todate of theses apps and track-

ers haven't produced consis-tent findings. Nor have theyfocused on healthy adults andon state-of-the-art technology. To plug these knowledgegaps, the researchers trawledresearch databases looking forrelevant studies published be-tween January 2007 and Janu-ary 2020, involving healthy18-to-65-year-olds with nolong term conditions.

They found 35 suitablecomparative studies, involv-ing a total of 7454 people,2107 (28 percent) of whomwere women. The interven-tion period lasted between 2and 40 weeks, averaging 13weeks.Pooling the data from28 of these studies showed

that compared with other ap-proaches, smartphone apps oractivity trackers increasedphysical activity by an aver-age of 1850 steps a day. Sevenfurther additional analyses ofthe data also showed thatsmartphone apps and activitytrackers significantly in-creased physical activity lev-els. The apps and tracker pro-grammes that also includedtext-messaging involvingprompts and cues, and tailoredfeatures, were more effective. And certain components, suchas goal setting, planning, andtasks graded by degree of dif-ficulty, were significantly as-sociated with greater levels ofeffectiveness.

Is there, as some have suggested,a developmental period early inlife when the brain is especially

receptive to musical training? Theanswer, according to new research,is probably not.

"It is a common observation thatsuccessful musicians often starttheir musical training early," saidLaura Wesseldijk, a researcher at theKarolinska Institute in Sweden andthe first author on the paper. "Onemuch-discussed explanation is thatthere may be a period in early child-hood during which the brain is par-ticularly susceptible to musicalstimulation. We found, however, that the explanation to why an earlystart matters may be more compli-cated and interesting than previous-ly believed." While the new studysupports the idea that an early startis associated with higher levels of

musical skills and achievement inadulthood, the underlying reasonsfor this may have more to do withfamilial influences -- such as genet-ic factors and an encouraging musi-cal family environment -- alongwith accumulating more total prac-tice time than those who start laterin life.

To untangle these effects, Wes-seldijk and her colleagues recruited310 professional musicians fromvarious Swedish music institutions, such as orchestral and musicschools. The researchers also useddata from an existing research proj-ect, the Study of Twin Adults:Genes and Environment (STAGE).Participants from both studies weretested on musical aptitude andachievement. They also answered aseries of questions that gauged howoften they practiced and the age of

onset of musical training. TheSTAGE data also provided geneticinformation on its participants.

By comparing the results fromthese two independent studies, theresearchers were able to show thatan earlier start age is associated withmusical aptitude, both in amateursand professional musicians, even af-ter controlling for accumulatedpractice time. They then evaluatedstarting age in a manner that ac-counted for the genetic data fromthe STAGE study.

The results indicate that geneticfactors -- possibly related to musicalinterest and talent -- have a substan-tial influence on the age individualsstart music practice and their futuremusical aptitude. When controllingfor familial factors, namely sharedgenetic and environmental influ-ences, such as a home environment

that is steeped in music, there wasno additional association betweenan earlier start age and musicality.

A possible explanation for theseresults could be that children whodisplay more talent in a particularfield, such as music, are encouragedto start practicing earlier. Anotherpossibility is that a musically active, interested, and talented family pro-vides a musical environment for thechild, while also passing on theirgenetic predispositions to engage inmusic.

"I think we have really investi-gated effects of the age you startmusical training to the fullest," saidWesseldijk. "Personally, as someonewho practices music, it is alwaysgreat to shed light on some of thefactors, within the gene environ-mental interplay, that influences mu-sic skills."

Why an early start is key to developing musical skill later in life

Himachal ZP polls: Quandary cloudshover over BJP, INC in Hamirpur

UNIHAMIRPUR, DEC 27

Though the filing of nominationpapers for the PRI (Panchayatiraj institutions) elections in thedistrict will start on December31, yet fissures have developedin both the BJP and theCongress party over theselection of the candidates forthe Zila parishad seats.

The BJP has alreadyannounced the names of itscandidates for all the seats but agroup in the party has stronglyopposed the way, the candidateswere selected from the Badsararea of the district. However, Vinod Thakur, thestate spokesman of the party anda close pal of the Chief Minister,Jai Ram Thakur have stronglyopposed the selection ofcandidates alleging that the

locals people and the partyworkers were not taken intoconfidence while naming thecandidates to the press. The proThakur group has also released alist of four candidates from theBadsar area and they were boundto create problems for theofficial candidates if they filedtheir papers.

The district BJP chief haseven refused to recognizeThakur saying that he knew

only one Vinod Thakur who wasin the Congress party and noneelse. It’s worth mentioning herethat Vinod Thakur had left theBJP before the last assemblyelections and had joined theCongress party. He rejoined theBJP once Jai Ram Thakurbecame the Chief Minister.

local MLA, Sukhvinder SinghSukhoo are not recognizingthose having relations with theDistrict party chief, RajendraZar who is the close friend ofthe state party chief, KuldeepRathore.

While the DCC haddeclared the names ofcandidates for all the areas itdidn’t release names of itscandidates from the Nadaunarea as they knew that if theydeclared the names, SS Sukhoowould reject them and onceagain the show of unity in theparty would be in jeopardy.

There are reports thatworkers of leaders of bothparties are going to discuss thedissension in their respectiveorganizations with their statelevel/top level leadership so thatthere was no problem to theircandidates in the coming PRIand CIVIC body elections in thedistrict, the results of whichwere bound to play a major rolein the 2022 Vidhan sabha pollsin the state.

Event shown through LED in Una oncompletion of three years of BJP govtPANKAJ KATNAUNA, DEC 27

On the completion of three years ofthe BJP government in Himachal, the program shown through LED inUnna, Satpal Satti encircles theCongress on celebrating Black Day,Congress is misleading people byconsidering it as Black Day. Oncompletion of three years ofHimachal government, this programwas shown live through LED inUnna today, which was seen bymany people including BJP leaderSatpal Satti. There has been a lot ofdevelopment in the state in the yearsand there will be more developmentin the next two years and in 2022,they will form a government on the

same basis, they have targeted theCongress for celebrating the blackday for these three years. Congressleaders make such statements tokeep themselves in the headlinestoday, the Congress itself is dividedinto groups, Mukesh Kush isspeaking and State President Kush is

speaking and the people of the statehave elected and the government isformed but the Congress iscelebrating Black Day on this, it isnot right, thus, by throwing dust inthe eyes of the people of the state, they are misleading and doing theirpolitics.

Congress observes Black Day, holdprotest at Bangana Chowk

JOGINDRA DEV ARYABANGANA, DEC 27

Congress has transformed thecelebration of the completionof three years of the BJPgovernment into a Black Day.On Sunday, the KutlehadCongress held a protestagainst the Jairamgovernment at BanganaChowk, celebrating BlackDay. Activists led by VivekSharma, Block President ofthe Kutelahad CongressCommittee, reported on thefailures of the Jayaramgovernment at BanganaChowk and made the publicaware. Vivek Vikku said thatthe BJP government isimmersed in the celebration ofcompletion of three years andthousands of people in thestate have become victims ofCorona virus due to the

negligence of the government.Everyday people are dying inthe state. The farmers in Delhiare sitting on the movementand dying every day, but thegovernment has to celebrateits celebration. He said thatthe State Government has notdone any work in these threeyears, on which the people ofthe state or the people ofKutlehad can take pride.

Vikku has alleged that bysensing a 3-year unsuccessfultenure, the state governmenthas issued a reservation rosterin closed rooms as per itschoice. He said that thegovernment shouldremember that the people ofthe state are naive andmodest, but not illiterate, whodo not understand theintention of the government.

He said that the public isaware and the intentions ofthe government will never befulfilled. He said that theslogan of 'unsuccessfulgovernment, poorgovernment' is echoingamong the people, becausethe double engine could notjoin the battle of the state andthe central government andthe state government engineis running out of fuel, due towhich the development worksare stalled. He said thatalmost all the big projects areswinging in this court like aball between the state and thecentral government. Morethan 30 projects are awaitingthe approval of the centralgovernment. Not one of the69 national highwaysdeclared by the centralgovernment is operational onthe ground. He said that

despite the BJP's nationalpresident from Himachal, theUnion Minister of State forFinance, his MP being a partyof double engine, it showsthat the Center is not takingthe state governmentseriously. There is a disputebetween the organization andthe government and the MLAand the minister are alsooutside the direction of thehead of the government. Thisis the reason why thegovernment is adopting everytactic for the panchayatelections, because thegovernment has come toknow that there is a wave ofpublic dissatisfaction withtheir failures. Fearful of this, the government also broughtreservation to suchpanchayats where it was noteven needed to fit theirfavorites.

Thefarmer asked me to explain whatkind of magic is it?" said Gandhiduring his speech in Lok Sabha.

"I asked the farmer as to whatdo they think is the reason behindit. To this he said, if the farmerswere able to sell their producedirectly to the factories, which are

far away from them, then themiddlemen will not be benefittedand the farmers will get the entireamount," he added. The Congressleader further asserted that this isthe "thinking" behind the foodpark. "This is a fight of the farmersand labourers from a few districtsof Amethi and Uttar Pradesh," headded. A mega food park hadreportedly been proposed to be setup in the Amethi district.

Bedi threatens legal action, demands immediate removal of his name from Kotla standNEW DELHI, Spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi has threatened to take legal action against the DDCA if his name is not removed from a spectators' stand at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground with immediate effect. On Wednesday, Bedi had shot a letter to the Delhi and District Cricket Association, lambasting it for installing a statue of its late former President Arun Jaitley at the Kotla. In the absence of any response from DDCA, Bedi wrote another letter to the cricket body on Saturday."It's been a few days since I wrote to you ... While within minutes of my letter going public I had an overwhelming support of the cricket fraternity across the globe. But I'm sad there's been no reaction from you," Bedi wrote in his letter addressed to DDCA President Rohan Jaitley. "... I hope in our country people still have a right to decide as individuals what they wish to be associated with & where their name plates can hang with dignity. Please don't push me to take a legal recourse." Bedi had also decided to renounce his membership of the DDCA. In his scathing letter, Bedi questioned the DDCA president's "ill advised" and "inexplicable" silence. "Your seemingly ill advised silence to my letter that has triggered a public debate about perpetuating politicians at sporting venues exposes your naivety," he wrote."Your inexplicable silence also underlines guilt of occupying a position of power solely because of your family name, which, you obviously wish to promote, come what may.
