Haryana Government’s continuous ef-forts to empower women has beenpaying off as women in the state arenot only well educated, tech-savvy butalso are well aware of their rights.

This can be gauged by the numer-ous tweets made by both women andmen of the state regarding variouswelfare schemes started by the Stateand Centre Governments. In fact, thestate government has been continu-ously working for upliftment ofwomen, be it their education, safetyand welfare.

The implementation of e-gover-nance in the state has ensured that theChief Minister's Office is just a clickaway from the people.

Chinese exports surge as globaldemand recovers from virus

China's exports surged60.6 per cent over ayear earlier in the

first two months of 2021,after factories reopened andglobal demand started to re-cover from the coronaviruspandemic.

Exports rose to USD468.9 billion, customs datashowed Sunday, accelerat-ing from December's 18.1per cent gain and nearlydouble the growth expectedby forecasters. Importsjumped 22.2 per cent toUSD 365.6 billion, up fromDecember's 6.5 per cent in-crease.

Chinese authoritiescombine trade data for thefirst two months to com-pensate for fluctuations dueto the Lunar New Year holi-day, which falls at differenttimes each year in Januaryor February. Factories shutdown for up to two weeks, then restock after they re-open.

Exporters benefitedfrom the relatively early re-opening of China's econo-my after the ruling Commu-nist Party declared victoryover the disease last Marchwhile foreign competitorsstill face anti-virus controls.

Forecasters say the Chi-nese export surge shoulddecelerate as demand formasks and other medicalsupplies eases and overseascompetitors return to globalmarkets. Trade officialshave warned that the globalsituation still is grave andcomplex. Exports to theUnited States soared 87.3

per cent over last year toUSD 80.5 billion in Januaryand February despite for-mer President DonaldTrump's tariff hikes im-posed in a fight over trade, technology and security. They have been left in placeby his successor, Joe Biden, who took office in January.

Economists and politi-cal analysts expect fewchanges under Biden due towidespread frustration inWashington with China'strade and human rightsrecords and complaints

about technology theft andspying. On Friday, China'stop economic official, Pre-mier Li Keqiang, an-nounced plans to acceleratetechnology developmentand reduce reliance on othercountries. That threatens toworsen strains with Wash-ington and Europe, whichcomplain Beijing violatesits market-opening pledgesby shielding its suppliersfrom competition. The lat-est trade figures look espe-cially dramatic comparedwith early 2020, when the

ruling party shut factories tofight the virus and tradeplunged.

Then, global exportstumbled 17.2 per cent in2020's first two monthsfrom the previous year. Ex-ports to the United Statesplunged 27.7 per cent. Liannounced an economicgrowth target of "over 6 percent this year, which shouldhelp to propel demand forforeign oil, iron ore, food, consumer goods and otherimports. Beijing promisedto buy more American soy-

beans, natural gas and otherexports in the Phase 1agreement last Januaryaimed at ending the tariffwar. The two sides agreedto postpone more tariffhikes, but penalties on bil-lions of dollars of each oth-er's goods remain. Chinafell behind on meetingthose commitments butstarted to catch up as de-mand rebounded. Thisyear, China's global tradesurplus for January andFebruary was USD 103.3billion, compared with a

USD 7.1 billion deficit inthe same period last year.Imports of U.S. goods rose66.4 per cent to USD 29.3billion. China's trade sur-plus with the United Statesnarrowed by 17.7 per centfrom the same time lastyear to USD 20.9 billion.Exports to the 27-nationEuropean Union rose 62.6per cent over January andFebruary last year to USD73.7 billion. Imports of Eu-ropean goods gained 32.5per cent to USD 45.9 bil-lion.

Literature & HealthHigh fat diets may lead togreater risk of heart attacks

Blood tests can act as early indicator of extreme COVID-19: Study

Pak blasphemy law does notprotect Hindus

Astudy led by a team of re-searchers from the Universityof Reading uncovered that

consumption of high-fat diets mayover-activate destructive heart dis-ease protein, increasing the risk of aheart attack. In a paper published inBiochemical and Biophysical Re-search Communications, researcherslooked at the effect of feeding micea high-fat diet on oxidative stresslevels on heart cells. The team fromthe University of Reading found thatcells from the mice had twice theamount of oxidative stress, and ledto heart cells being up to 1.8 timesbigger due to cardiac hypertrophywhich is associated with heart dis-ease. Named first author Dr SunbalNaureen Bhatti, from the University

of Reading said, "Our researchshows one way in which a high-fatdiet can cause damage to the musclecells that make up our hearts.

It appears that a switch happensat a cellular level when the micewere fed on a high-fat regime whichcauses a normally harmless protein,Nox2, to become overactive.

The precise nature of how theNox2 protein goes onto cause oxida-tive damage and set off destructivehypertrophy is still being re-searched." "We are really justscratching the surface of how theprotein Nox2 responds to diets, butour research clearly demonstratesthat high-fat diets have the potentialto cause significant damage to theheart," Bhatti added.

The way Pakistani mem-ber of the National As-sembly Aamir Liaquat

Husain used the image ofHindu deity to mock PakistanMuslim League-Nawaz(PML-N) Vice PresidentMaryam Sharif recentlyshows that the country's blas-phemy law does not protectHindus in the country.

According to scribe Kun-war Khuldune Shahid's articlefor The Diplomat, the in-stances of using the doctoredimages of Hindu goddesses isthe "latest reminder of the Is-lamist double standard ofPakistan's stance on blasphe-my and the correlated blood-thirsty laws."

"In Pakistan, lives havebeen derailed, individualsburned alive, and entirecolonies torched over false al-legations of blasphemyagainst Islam. Unlike Husain, who didn't even have to faceany criminal inquiry for opensacrilege against Hinduism, those accused of blasphemingagainst Islam aren't affordedthe privilege of a retraction orapology," Shahid wrote in hisarticle.

The scribe further pointedout that at least 75 have beenextrajudicially killed, andhundreds imprisoned, overthe intangible and victimless"crime" of sacrilege againstIslam in Pakistan.

Islamabad has been em-broiled in an embarrassingdiplomatic brawl with Parisfor last six months over therepublication of Charlie Heb-do's caricatures on Islam andthe anti-separatism bill, cul-minating last week in theFrench foreign ministry issu-ing a reminder to Pakistanthat all of France's laws, pastand present, are equally appli-cable to all religions. "Pak-

istan's diplomacy currentlyappears to be orchestrated byradical Islamist groups likethe Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pak-istan (TLP), which in No-vember had convinced thegovernment to "boycottFrench products" and "expelthe French ambassador" ow-ing to blasphemous carica-tures against Islam," Shahidsaid. He added that the resist-ance against the constructionof Islamabad's first-ever Hin-du temple is rooted in the in-stitutionalized anti-Hindubigotry in the country, whichcontinues to be preachedthrough school curricula andmosque sermons.

Aclinical report drove by thejournal 'Blood Advances' hasclaimed that a progression of

biomarkers, or organic signs, relatedto white platelet initiation and obesitycan anticipate extreme outcomes inCOVID-19 patients.

When patients with COVID-19arrive in emergency rooms, there arerelatively few ways for doctors to pre-dict which ones are more likely to be-come critically ill and require inten-sive care and which ones are morelikely to enjoy a quick recovery. How-ever, this study focuses on biomarkersthat can help predict severe outcomesin COVID-19 patients.

"Patients with high levels of thesemarkers were much more like to re-quire care in the intensive care unit, require ventilation, or die due to their

COVID-19," said Dr Hyung Chun, the lead author, an associate professorof medicine in cardiovascular medi-cine and pathology and director oftranslational research at the Yale Pul-monary Vascular Disease Program.

Previously, a few laboratory stud-ies had identified possible indicatorsof severe COVID-19, including D-dimer levels, a measure of blood co-agulation, and levels of proteinsknown as cytokines, which are re-leased as part of inflammatory re-sponses in the body. However, untilnow, no laboratory marker could pre-dict which patients with COVID-19would eventually become critically illprior to showing clinical signs andsymptoms of severe disease. For thenew study, Yale researchers used pro-teomic profiling -- a screen for multi-

ple proteins within the blood -- to ana-lyze samples taken from 100 patientswho would go on to experience differ-ent levels of COVID-19 severity. Inall cases, the blood samples were col-lected on the patients' first day of ad-mission. The researchers also ana-lyzed clinical data for over 3,000 ad-ditional patients with COVID-19within the Yale New Haven Hospitalsystem. They found that five proteins(resistin, lipocalin-2, HGF, IL-8, andG-CSF) that are associated with neu-trophils, a type of white blood cell, were elevated in the COVID-19 pa-tients who later became critically ill. Many of these proteins had previouslybeen associated with obesity but notwith COVID-19 or other viral illness-es. Notably, the elevated neutrophilbiomarkers for patients who would go

on to experience more serious symp-toms were evident before those symp-toms appeared. All COVID-19 pa-tients who were admitted or trans-ferred to the ICU had elevated neu-trophil activation markers, while thesebiomarkers remained low for patientswho never developed severe illness.None of the patients with lower neu-trophil biomarker levels died.

"This is one of the first demon-strations that a set of biomarkers inthe blood of COVID patients can pre-dict eventual ICU admission, even be-fore such patients become criticallyill," said study author Dr Alfred Lee,associate professor of medicine inhematology, director of the Yale Med-ical Oncology-Hematology Fellow-ship Program, and a member of theYale Cancer Center.

EDITORIALWord games: 'creative'mantra for the govt

One of the greatest talents of the politicians inpower at the Centre is their ability to infuse oldwords with new meanings. ‘Freedom’, for ex-

ample, seems to mean something other than what wasgenerally understood so far. They have now becomecreative with the word, ‘creative’. There is to be a cre-ative writing contest for teachers and parents ofKendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya schools beforethe prime minister’s discussion with students on ex-amination stress. The idea of the prime minister as thestudents’ friend is creative enough, particularly whenhe mentors them about examination stress. His ownyouthful experience must be the source of his wisdom. That the prime minister, who is not noticeably fond ofacademics and students who speak their mind, shouldinsert himself directly into young people’s thinkingand mould their attitude to examinations is the veryacme of creativity. But the Bharatiya Janata Party-ledgovernment wants more. More inventiveness than thegau mata examination entailed. The topics for the cre-ative writing contest, which pupils in higher classescan join, indicate immediately that the word ‘creative’means something new. Shorn of its association withfreedom, creativity for parents is a kind of homework:lessons in the way they will reduce their children’sstress. “Your words make your child’s world — en-courage as you have always done”, for example, hasthe government placing itself between parents andchildren and trying to regiment their attitudes with in-structions about the child and parent writing each sen-tence in turn. “Be your child’s friend — keep depres-sion away” is an order, not a creative writing topic; theparent is instructed to write the child a postcard say-ing why he or she is special. But to have parents joina contest — test, in effect — is a sign of the govern-ment’s creativity about its own rights. And do its aid-ed schools teach that segment of students alone inwhich all parents are able to participate in a writtencontest? The topic given to teachers is about the ben-efits of online teaching and how to make it better. Thisis designed to stifle all descriptions of the problemsfaced by an enormous number of teachers and stu-dents all over India which deeply affect inclusivityand achievement, while condemning children to themonotony of screen communication without dynamicengagement with teachers, peers and physical sur-roundings. To write about the benefits alone would betruly creative; it is the kind of creativity underliesmost of the government’s favourite agendas.
