A Message from Advisory Board Chairman, Jeff Reynolds

Isn’t it great to live in South Texas where we can play golf and tennis almost every day with only occasional rain, cold and frost delay? We are heading into 2020 with the New Year only a week away. January 1st starts the tenure of a new Board of Advisors here at The Club at Sonterra, including the start of my own two-year tenure as Chairman. We have several new members, some holding At-Large positions and others representing the Leadership positions of the various golf, tennis, and social organizations.

In one way or another, you, the members placed us in these positions to represent YOU! Each of us has a network of constitu-ents that elected us to represent their views to the management of the Club and in turn to the ownership. It works the other way also. The other side of our role is to gain a clear understanding of where Management wants to take the Club, then advise on how that direction contributes to the desires of the members and the health and future growth potential of the Club. While I have seen and experienced the occasional disappointment of not getting the answer desired, the majority of suggestions and requests not only are listened to but are incorporated into the changes and direction of the Club.

By the time you read this, hopefully general communications will have been distributed to all members defining what the Club’s future looks like. Our Board of Advisors received a preview and I daresay all are excited at what we have heard is coming. I trust you will be too

Hopefully, after you receive this communication you all will agree that we are at the beginning of an exciting re-invention of The Club at Sonterra. There are significant improvements that have been funded and further improvements that are still in the design phase. I trust that we will, in a good way, not recognize our Club after 3 to 4 more years.

In the meantime, of course, we all have day to day aggravations and instances where things don’t go as well as they should at the Club. I ask you to be in communications with your Board Members (and the Management through open doors or written communications), giving feedback, good and bad, and trust that it will be heard, and a response given. We will be a better Club the more of us that are vocal, active and involved. And… It goes without saying that all of us appreciate an occasional pat on the back for things going well. Don’t be bashful!!

Happy New Year!!

Jeff Reynolds

I trust this message finds you well after a great Holiday Season spent with family & friends! For sure I wanted to wish you a very Happy New Year and start the New Year taking some time to review the last 24 months, talk about some upcoming operational improvements and some even more exciting re-invention enhancements for 2020. The last 24 months have been nothing short of challenging but for the most part very rewarding. We have been able to do a lot of great things over this period, too many to mention really, but here are a couple that stand out to me. We’ve been fortunate to be able to spend over $2MM in Capital dollars to include a complete lake renovation, 4 water wells renovations, Wellness & Kids Club renovations and major upgrades to Tennis and the Pool area. Increased payroll & expense budgets over $280K, developed and began working our agronomic plans and for sure the entire staff is immensely better from top to bottom side to side. But for me, most importantly and the one thing I’m most proud of, we have the trust & faith of ownership! 2020 will continue to be a year of great change with some needed operational changes/upgrades. Again too many to list but the biggest highlights are listed below.

• Increased payroll & expenses an additional $215K from 2019

• Beginning January 1, 2020 all non-banquet servers, bartenders, beverage cart attendants and Sports Grill/Pool servers will receive all of the 20% gratuity

• We will hire an additional F&B manager mainly focused on daily member service

• Have received and will continue to receive some crucial pieces of Maintenance equipment

• Outsourcing all Clubhouse grounds to include mow, edge, trim, chemical & fertilize, blow and removal of all debris

• We will again be taking 3 teams (1 Membership, 2 Golf) to the annual CBIGG event in November AND this year it will be held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

As you can see we have been able to some great things the last 24 months and are slated to do even greater things in 2020. Again due to the tremendous support of ownership we have been awarded substantial additional owner investment funds! The need is great and getting started is always the hardest part but these funds will set in motion our path to upgrade and even re-invent our Club. With that said below are the upgrades we’ll be working on for 2020.

• Repair all 4 waterfalls on the North Golf course

• Replace/Upgrade some golf course(s)/range amenities

• Conversion of 2 Clay tennis courts to 8 Pickleball courts

• Resurfacing of 7 Hard tennis courts

• Resurfacing of 2 Clay tennis courts

• Conversion of 2 Clay tennis courts to 2 Hard tennis courts

• Finish replacing remaining windscreens

• Repair all roofs

• Replace multiple A/C units

• Minor Clubhouse tree work In addition we will be in the planning, design and development stages for the items listed below. We will be working with John Cochran of Club Design Associates on this re-invention as well as preliminary plans/drawings for future upgrades. I’ve known John for some time and he’s not only a friend but a true recognized award win-ning professional in our industry. But better than that he’s a boot wearing Texan from Fort Worth, University of North Texas alumni, member and Board member at Colonial Country Club, member of the Tournament Committee for the Charles Schwab Challenge Invitational at Colonial Country Club and an owner of Five Oaks CC in Tennessee so he gets what we do and how we like to do it.

• Conversion of the Terrace Room (naming contest coming soon) into our new daily member dining room, eliminating the current 19th Hole as that function

• Addition of a large composite deck including fire pits and an outdoor grilling area on the current Terrace Patio grounds (naming contest coming soon)

• Adding a putting green in the area adjacent to the new deck and have it lighted for night entertainment

• Connect the Tavern on the Green to the new member dining area and new deck with expanded hours of operation

I’m sure not everyone agrees or understands why we do things the way we do but I do want everyone to know we are always listening and like you want to be better today than yesterday and will always work hard striving to be the best. These are very exciting times for our Club, more details to come but for now thank you for your support, for being a member and friend of The Club At Sonterra! Respectfully, Hagen Cleek, General Manager

Hope your holidays were joyful and that the New Year finds you full of hope and peace!

2019 was once again a wonderful year for SWGA and we had a lot to be thankful for and celebrate at the Holiday Luncheon on December 11, which was well attended by the SWGA ladies. The chef, catering, kitchen and wait staff ensured that the menu was fantastic and the service was excellent! We want to thank Ryan Luna and the Pro Shop staff for all their help with the events over the season. Their guidance and assistance with our events over the course of the year was greatly appreciated.

Thank you to our 2019 outgoing officers:

Men’s Golf Association (MGA) The MGA Board is looking at ways to increase participation by all MGA eligible members. We want to hear from you, so please send an email to [email protected] with your ideas, comments, concerns, etc.

MGA NEWS The Sonterra Cup is the season ending tournament for the top 40 points winners through the season plus the top 4 points winners for the last 3 tournaments. The teams are captained by the top 2 points winners through the season and this year’s captains were Tommy Harrison for the Red Team and Greg Drott for the Blue Team. The Blue Team prevailed.

The Sonterra Cup is meant to be a premier event and an incentive to play and win or place in as many tournaments as possible to qualify for the tournament. Accordingly, each participant receives a $300 credit to spend on Titleist/Footjoy merchandise prior to the event in addition to 2 team shirts and a team hat. There is a social the evening before the tournament (open to all MGA members). It’s a great event so play often and play well so you can enjoy it next year.

We’re pleased to announce that the MGA will be giving back to the entire Sonterra membership by providing some upgrades to the course that will benefit everyone. Specifically, the turn-out areas on holes # 12 and #17 that are now dirt and mulch and deeply rutted will be paved at MGA expense. The board feels this is justified to give back to the Sonterra members who do get inconvenienced each month when we take over the course for either a one or two day tournament.

For 2020 we want to continue doing a majority of the tourna-ments as ABC or ABCD events where teams are chosen by computer rather than choosing your own teams. We’ve heard loud and clear from many of you that those are the types of events you want to play so you can meet and play with new people.

We’re looking at some fun new formats for the 2020 season. Again, with an eye to making these events a fun and fair competition for everyone and to give all of us the opportunity to play with new people and hopefully make some new friends in the process.

We’d love to have the MGA membership grow and we’re looking at ways to incentivize people to join and give the MGA a chance. The more members we have the better it is for all of us to have bigger and better tournaments.

More information will be coming out shortly on the formats for 2020 and incentives to help grow the MGA membership.

The MGA Board election was held in December with Darin Anderson, Paul Larson and Johnny Naranjo being elected to replace outgoing members Shaun Shoaf, Andrew Richard and Nick Vanderpool. Tommy Harrison was elected by the board to be the new MGA president for the 2020 season.

The other 2020 board members are Chris Castillo – past president, Roger Hopkins, Jimmy Bourne, Ron Graham and John Gick.

We’re looking forward to a great 2020 MGA season.

‘Trigger Your Focus’

Find a trigger, such as securing the Velcro on your glove or adjusting your hat, to signal when it’s time to focus on your next shot.

This will get you out of “leisure mode,” when you might be chatting with your playing partners or enjoying the scenery, and sharpen your concentration -

On the Course with David Gonzales

Course Superintendent

Happy New Year’s!

We had one roller coaster of a year in 2019. 24 inches of rain in the first 6 months, and only 10 inches for the last 6 months. 6 inches coming all in one evening October 24th into the early morning on the 25th leaving the course closed for the day. Golf courses across the world are always at mother natures mercy, its how it will always be . Unless… “They build golf courses indoors” We plan daily for the future and always have a back up plan for the just in case events. Being proactive and not reactive will only get us further ahead of our competition.

We had a good growing season and finally began doing all the agronomics that this course had been lacking for so long. We have slowly given the both golf course the strength to survive another year. With each year’s agronomic practice, the course conditions will only get better. With all the dates being set for our Agronomic practices (weather permitting) I cannot express how excited we all are for this upcoming growing season.

I know everyone has heard for years things are as good as they can get or that we will give you better. I am here to assure everyone that we are do everything within our power and knowledge to make that possible. We must follow through with our goals and plans with proper execution if we are going to be successful. This all starts with my crew and myself. I must ask that all members do their best to follow golf course signs they are not in place to slow you down or make your life miserable they have been put in place to protect the turf from desiccation.

With all that we must look forward to this upcoming year, I would like to take the time to thank all memberships in such a warm welcoming onto the team this past year. The Smag group that put on wonderful lunches for the Agronomy team and the Christmas gifts they received. Thank you to all members that take the time to stop and say thank you to the team for their hard work.

We will see you on the course.

See you on the course,

David Gonzales

Thanks to all who participated.

December's challenge is how many pushups. Winners will be announced in February

It’s no secret that come January 1, many Americans name weight loss as their number one New Year's resolution. And, as it goes, just one week into the new year, people begin falling like flies when it comes to sticking to diet and exercise.

The point is that we put so much pressure on ourselves, creating lofty goals and tackling them at full force, only to burn out or become immediately disappointed when we don't see instantaneous results. But there is an effective approach to getting your body into gear without completely losing your mind (and intentions) along the way. It just requires a little patience—and maybe a little attitude adjustment.

Turn the odds of commitment in your favor by choosing a workout that you actually enjoy. Just because Pilates doesn't promise the same afterburn as a Boot Camp class doesn't mean it's not the superior choice in your case. After all, if you're still hitting the mat consistently in June while your interval watch has been gathering dust since February, is there really any question as to which workout is more effective?

Or Consider Shaking Things Up

If you feel that you're plateauing or bored consider trying something different. Not only might this make your routine a little more interest-ing, but it'll challenge your body and muscle memory as well.

Try One Session With a PT

…especially if you're one of those people who only go to the gym for the classes or the cardio machines. Just one intensive session with a personal trainer can help you better understand how to approach your personal goals, not to mention tweaking your form, which alone can be the difference between a fat-blasting, muscle-sculpting routine and a recipe for injury.

Or Enlist Your iPhone

Because there's an app for that—several hundred, in fact.

Forget the Scale

Focusing on hard-and-fast numbers isn't just torturous, it's often inaccurate. Factors like water retention and your menstrual cycle can make your weight fluctuate up to 10 pounds in a single day. There's also the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, meaning you could be whittling your waist without seeing the needle on the scale move at all.

Instead, track your progress in a fashion that's far less ironclad and way more upbeat. This could be noticing how your clothes fit, or even taking weight loss out of the equation entirely and instead noticing how much stronger you are, how much easier that last run was, or even how you can now carry your groceries up the stairs of your five-floor walk-up without breaking a sweat.

Give Up One Indulgence

Cutting out every questionable part of your diet just isn't sustainable or healthy—not to mention that crash diets tend to have a less-than-ideal impact on your personality.

Instead, pick one vice you could probably do without and nix it, even if just temporarily—chocolate, diet soda, your nightly glass of wine, whatever. Maybe even switch out different indulgences every month to balance things out. The point is that you're maintaining a reasonable sense of control without feeling deprived.

Target Small Habits

Have a tendency to take the elevator? Vow to hit the stairs instead. During your next Netflix binge, do sit-ups or jumping jacks during the show's opening credits. Not only are you sneaking in mini workouts but making yourself more active in general is likely to foster healthy habits on a grander scale in the long run.

Give It a Rest

It's not all go, go, go. Giving yourself a break is just as important in order to avoid burnout or injury. You might be tempted to throw your-self into a daily workout routine but easing your way into it might be a smarter route. Feeling sore but still itching to get moving? Opt for active rest, like a gentle yoga class or an easy walk. Change Your Attitude

Why look at getting in shape as a necessary evil? The first step is to stop looking at working out as a means to something and instead see it as a fun, daily adventure. Focus on the awesome instructor, the gym's great community, or the newfound energy and focus you have to tackle the day. Toned, strong muscles? Well, that's just a nice side effect.

They are traveling worldwide telling their story and signing books translated in 8 different languages. The recent Netflix series, Narcos, was the story of Pena, Murphy & Escobar.
