People who follow Christ do not listen to "prophets of doom," silly horoscopes or sermons that frighten and divide people. Christians persevere in hope and love -- no matter what upheavals and difficulties arise. This is important to distinguish the word of wisdom that God speaks to us each day from the shouting of those who seek in God's name to frighten, to nourish division and fear." ~~ Pope Francis

IN THANKSGIVING FOR BLESSINGS Unknown God our protector, God our hope,

We turn to you in times of hardship, but in our struggles and fears, we often forget to thank you

for the grace you have given us to overcome hardship, for countless unknown blessings... we give you thanks.

For waking with us as we have prepared for storms and for sharing our joy when disaster is averted…

we give you thanks. For wars that never happened, where tempers flared but reason and mercy prevailed… we give you thanks.

For the crops that have flourished, and the child who now knows nothing of hunger… we give you thanks.

For all the nights we spent in fear, but by your grace saw mornings filled with hope… we give you thanks.

For all the joys of this year, the moments when light shone through the darkness

when angels stood triumphant when we saw past our sin and strife

and glimpsed beyond the veil at what the kingdom of God truly could be…

we give you thanks. Amen

Dear Friends,

This week is a busy one! At all the Masses we will be celebrating COMMITMENT SUNDAY - the culmination of our Capital Campaign - Strengthen and Grow: The Path to our Future. Today is truly a celebration. You may have noticed the pathway lining the wall in the vestibule of the church with the footprints signed by members of our community. This is a visual representation of the progress we have made in our efforts to renovate and improve the school and church buildings. It is your generous giving that makes this all possible. Thank you for all of you who have pledged and who will pledge today.

In the Liturgical Calendar, this week is the Feast of Christ the King, the final Sunday in our liturgical year. In particular, today marks the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. I have been reflecting on this past year, and the challenge for the Church to be “the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy.” (excerpt from Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy). The Socktober collection for the homeless, our ongoing support of the local foodbank, the work of St. Vincent de Paul, and the ministry of our Cabrini Ministers who reach out to the sick and homebound are all excellent examples of our successes. But I cannott help but look critically at my own participation and my everyday encounters—with co-workers, neighbors, strangers and beggars. When we are honest before God, we see the work yet to be done in our own hearts. Thanks be to God that the end of the Year of Mercy is not the end of our efforts to live mercy - as recipients and vessels.

Finally, this week we will celebrate Thanksgiving. For many, this is a time for family and friends to gather together to enjoy good food, fun, (football) and laughter. Our St. Vincent de Paul will be busy this week delivering food to families in need and individual meals to residents at Patrick’s Place. Thank you for your contributions that make this all possible. We will gather for Mass on Thanksgiving at 9:00 AM and pray for our parish, our community, our nation and our world. We will also be collecting food for the foodbank and sending you home with bread, blessed at the Mass to share at your dinner table later that day. It is a living reminder of the one meal that we share through faith.

I am grateful to all of your for the ways you live out your faith right here in Wallingford! Together we are accomplishing more than we could ever do alone. Let’s continue to pray for one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Marti Lundberg, Pastoral Coordinator

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Today’s readings paint a somewhat frightening picture of the end of time. But the Gospel ends with the assurance to faithful stewards that those who persevere will be saved.

ST BENEDICT GIVING TREE — COMING NOV. 27TH

The Giving Tree will be in the vestibule beginning Sunday, November 27

th. Our parish is well known for our generosity through the years

regarding the Giving Tree. As in the year's past there will be gift requests from people served by the following groups: St. Martin de Porres: providing safe shelter for homeless men over 50, Mary's Place: providing a welcoming and accepting environment for women, children and families, King County Juvenile Detention Center: providing services for youth awaiting to go through the court system or for sentencing, Columbia Lutheran Home: provides care for the whole person in a skilled nursing facility with long term nursing care, St. Francis House: providing services for men, women and children in need , St. Vincent de Paul: striving to provide assistance to the poor and finally Friends of Limulunga: part of the St. Benedict Parish Family that assists our sister parish of St. Lawrence of Brindisi with scholarships for high school, college or trade school.

When you take a tag off the Tree, you make a promise to buy the gift listed on the tag or to provide scholarship monies and to put that unwrapped gift, with the tag securely tapped or stapled to it, under the Giving Tree no later than 5:00 PM on December 11

th. Thank

you in advance for blessing a special person in need this Christmas! Let us continue our great tradition of generosity with our annual Giv-ing Tree.
