DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The department is primarily involved in the process of developing human resources adept in the holistic management of land resources. Papua New Guinea is endowed with enormous land resources (vis-à-vis population), which are grossly under-utilized. Here is the relevance of the department that produces the entire gamut of land professionals – starting from the discipline of ‘Surveying’, Geographical Information Science / Systems to the property management / valuations experts.
The human resources developed in the department have a wide exposure to the state of the art technology (e.g. recent developments in the field of Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS, use of latest Total Stations and allied implements of the digital era) in their respective disciplines. The application of technology is emphasized, as is the role of the professionals in the development of PNG. The Department has been producing graduates for about four decades and many graduates occupy senior positions in Government and the private sector in PNG and the Pacific Region.
The courses of the Department are specific but considerable overlapping of discipline areas is encouraged with the aim of producing broader based graduates. The Department has good facilities including a comprehensive digital mapping, geographic information systems and remote sensing laboratory, state of the art global positioning systems technology and software, a spatial information science / cartographic processing laboratory and automated surveying systems in addition to the traditional surveying and mapping facilities.
The department is also involved in a number of research programs including measuring crustal deformation to establish a geocentric datum in PNG, GIS, remote sensing, and cartographic communication through development of thematic maps for PNG, property valuation and land management research programs as well as student projects.

SURVEYING PROGRAM
The Bachelor of Surveying is a four (4) year undergraduate degree program. It has the following aims:
To provide a sound grounding in the principles and practice of surveying and mapping - spatial measurements and analyses.
To prepare graduates in the application of modern surveying systems and techniques etc. to activities such as geodetic, cadastral, engineering & construction, mining and hydrographic surveys and as well as land administration and property development.
To develop an appreciation of the factors affecting land use decisions in Papua New Guinea.
To prepare graduates to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals and the community.
To prepare students for further professional and academic development.
To educate students so that after a period of training they can play an effective role in the practice development of the surveying profession in Papua New Guinea and the Small Island Nations of the Pacific.

SURVEY DEGREE PROGRAM
The first two years of the Bachelor of Surveying degree program covers adequately the foundation subjects of the course and the introduction to the fundamental principles and practice of plane surveying and mapping.
While traditional equipment and conventional techniques of doing field surveying and computations are still the bases for teaching/instructing of the course in the first two years, students also instructed and exposed to automated surveying systems (hardware and software) – through motorizing of the most modern state of the art total stations and GPS/GNSS equipment.
The last two years of the course focuses more on the advance aspects (principles and applications) of surveying and mapping – such as the teaching of geodesy and theory of errors/statistical analysis/lease squares adjustment which are very much needed in the modern practice of geodetic, hydrographic, mining, cadastral, topographical, engineering and construction surveys. The course also introduces the final year students to professional practice in surveying. The Bachelor of Surveying degree program is recognized by the Association of Surveying Papua New Guinea (ASPNG), the professional body in surveying in PNG.

In particular, more emphasis is now placed on the use of computers for such activities as report generation, computerized property appraisal, statistical and financial analysis, property development and investment analysis and automated property management and maintenance.
Basic instruction in geographical information systems and remote sensing is incorporated in the course to give students an appreciation of the range of technological tools available to assist in decision-making processes for effective property management and development.
PROPERTY STUDIES DEGREE PROGRAM
A four-year degree course leading to a Bachelor of Property Studies. The program includes one semester of industrial training in the first semester of the fourth year of studies.
The first two-years of the program set the foundation for streaming into two areas of specialization namely, Property Valuation/Property Management and Land Administration/Property Management.
The degree course prepares students for a variety of vocations whose interests center on the real property and real estate.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entry to the course requires either B level passes or better in English, Minor and Major Mathematics and Social Science subjects.
Students taking Science subjects are also encouraged to apply.

The three fundamental activities of geographic information science are: Development and management of geographically referenced
database. Analysis and modeling of geographic data. Development and integration of specific disciplines in remote sensing,
photogrammetry, surveying, mapping and cartography, and technologies in geographic information systems, computing, global positioning systems for the first two activities.
The discipline aims at integrating the emerging state-of-art technologies of data acquisition (remote sensing and digital photogrammetry), digital

The graduates are GIS professionals who will be basically GIS as well as CAD / CAM users and operators. Also they will be involved in the surveying and GIS data capture, data manipulation, data display and production of quality output. All in all the degree course will prepare students for GIS management positions. The course focuses more on GIS design, development and management. Excellent employment opportunities for GIS graduate exist in the traditional sectors (surveying and mapping) and other areas such as education, engineering, agriculture, forestry, environmental science, legal arena and business.
