Fellow Rotarian,

I welcome you to the month of August designated as Membership and Extension month. It is a time to redefine our membership in

Rotary, the prospects and challenges. The membership committee at club and district level have lined up several activities to mark

the month and I want to encourage us all to key into all these activities. Be reminded that membership represents the pivot on

which the core values of Rotary stands.

On the first day of August our club in partnership with other corporate organizations again made a difference in our community

through a well executed free medical mission which have a total of seven hundred and ninety (790) beneficiaries attended to (free

consultations, free medical examinations & tests, free drugs and other medical supplies). Thanks to all members for this success

story.

My dear Rotarian the countdown to the induction of the 14th Hope president continues. I want to request that we should all assist

and cooperate with the induction committee. I wish to remind us that the induction ceremony is that of all members of Rotary Club

of Maryland, let us all join hands in making the day successful in terms of attendance and income.

Let us continue to BE A GIFT.

Rotn (Dr) Femi AKODU

Best Class President.

Presidential message

K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran President 2015-16

August 2015

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wood-en sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its sig-nature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest stand-ards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's com-pany history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: "It's been a good day today, Dad. We've earned a little more." "Oh," said Dad, "what do you mean?" "Well, I've just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it's for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money." He looked at me in dis-may. "Godtfred, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You're not going to bed until the work's done – and you'll do it all on your own." There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant.

Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber humans 86 to 1.We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's busi-ness practices – its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of the standards ex-pected. TO BE CONTINUED.......

PARENTAL GUIDANCE .

School holiday is here again, the children want to travel outside their domain, they want to have fun, play around and exhaust parents’ reserve fund, hmmmm!

For some parents the school holidays are a respite time with a relaxed routine. However, it can be a nightmare for others and so requires a lot of planning and management. As par-ents we learn quickly that when raising children it is im-portant to have as many options and resources as you can possibly gather. Managing childcare over the summer months can be a challenge and early planning is the key. Below are 10 ways to manage school holiday.

1. The arrival of the holidays doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Encourage your children to study during holiday

2. Please let the safe and sound of our children during holi-day be paramount interest

3. Research what summer class are running in your area. What are their price ranges? Children love to engage with their peers. These interactions help them to develop their confidence and learn new skills. They may need a little sup-port to attend at first.

4. Co-ordinate with other parents to find out if any of your child’s friends are attending summer class. It is always nice to know somebody.

5. Monitor their movements during holiday, don’t send them

THE IMPORTANCE OF WEARING THE ROTARY PIN BY Sakuji Tanaka, PAST, Rotary International

President

I am a Japanese businessman, and I wear a suit almost every day. The Rotary

pin is always on my lapel. It is there because I am proud to be a Rotarian.

Anywhere I go, people will see the pin and know who I am. Other Rotarians

will see it and know that I am a friend, and people who are not Rotarians will

see it as well. I want to be sure that all of them also understand the meaning

of this pin. This is why I am asking all of you to wear your Rotary pin and to

raise awareness of what the pin means. I believe having that pin on your

lapel changes you. It makes you think more before you speak and before you

act. It makes you remember, all the time, that you are a Rotarian – and that

as Rotarians, we are here to help.

All of us should be ready to talk about Rotary. When someone asks you

about that pin, you should be ready to answer them. What is Rotary? What

does Rotary do? These are questions that each of us should always be pre-

pared to answer.

We cannot go to prospective members and ask them to join Rotary only be-

cause we want more members. We have to show them that Rotary is a won-

derful organization, and that they will be happier because they belong to a

Rotary club.

When we ask people to join Rotary, we are doing this to help them as well. I

think all of us are grateful to the person who asked us to join. I know that my

life is much happier, and has been much more productive, because of Rotary.

It is clear to me that the day I joined the Rotary Club of Yashio was a day

when I took my first step down a different path in life – a path of greater

connection, greater satisfaction, and a deeper sense of fulfillment and peace.

This is a feeling that I want to share with others. And I know that one way to

do that is through bringing in new members. But we must also do it by raising

awareness of Rotary and Rotary’s work, by focusing on our public image and

wearing our Rotary pins every day.
