EASTER VIGIL Although celebrated Holy Saturday evening, it is the dramatic Easter Vigil Liturgy that marks the beginning of Easter. We are awaiting our master's return with our lamps full and burning, so that he will find us awake and seat us at his table (cf. Luke 12:35ff). All Catholics should try to attend this beautiful service. The vigil is divided into four parts:

Service of Light, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of Baptism and the Liturgy of the Eucharist

Service of Light - The atmosphere in the church is very different: the holy water fonts are drained, all the lights are out, the tabernacle is empty. Our service begins outside the church. A new fire (the Easter Fire) is lit and blessed. The Paschal Candle is prepared with these words while the priest marks the candle: Christ yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and the Omega. All time be-longs to him and all the ages to him be glory and power through every age and for ever. Amen. The priest inserts incense into the candle in the form of a cross, saying:

By his holy and glorious wounds, may Christ the Lord guard us and protect us. Amen.

The priest lights the candle from the new fire, saying:

May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

The candle is then processed through the church, with the deacon lifting the candle at three different times, singing: The Light of Christ. (or Lumen Christi) and the congregation sings in reply: Thanks be to God (or Deo gratias). Everyone lights their candle from the Easter candle and continue in procession until the whole church is alight. The Paschal candle symbolizes Christ, the Light of the World.

Liturgy of the Word Three Old Testament passages are read. These readings help us meditate on the wonderful works of God for his people since the be-ginning of time. The Gloria is sung before the reading of the Epistle of the Romans, and the Alleluia is sung before the Gospel.

Liturgy of Baptism During this time the Easter water is blessed, new members are brought into the Church through baptism, part of the liturgy includes the Litany of the Saints. Afterwards the faithful are blessed with water and all renew their baptismal promises.

Liturgy of Eucharist So resumes the Mass, with the special prayers inserted during the Eucharist Prayer. The whole church is called to join at the sacrificial table that Christ prepared for us through his death and resurrection. The Mass ends with the glorious:

V. The Mass is ended, go in peace, Alleluia, Alleluia. R. Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Dear sisters and brothers: Blessed Palm Sunday to you all….a day we recognize Jesus as the true Messiah and King while also preparing to celebrate his ultimate sacrifice, death and Resurrection. We all struggle to see Him working in our lives but this week, I want to share with you an amazing ex-perience I had last week at the VA Medical Center where I saw the face of Christ and realized how deeply he can use us to serve those in need when we surrender. Every Thursday I try to spend three or four hours doing communion visits at the VA but two weeks ago, I got there late and couldn’t find anyone in the office to give me a roster of the Catholic patients I could visit. So, having skipped lunch, I headed up to the cafeteria (or mess hall for your military types) to find a hamburger. As I stood in the hamburger line, I met a man standing in front of me who was a soldier, a Ranger, and we started chatting. I soon learned his name and that we had a mutual friend! So we sat down for lunch and he began to disclose more and more to me. To make a very long story short, he was AWOL from the PTSD treatment program at the American Lake VA south of Tacoma and he was very depressed and contemplating suicide. By God’s grace, I recognized his great need and paged Father Charles, the full-time VA chaplain I work for, who came up to help me find care for this Wounded Warrior. We spent the next two hours talking with him, never leaving him alone and he agreed to be readmitted to the psychiatric unit at the VA for help. This was truly a moment of grace for all three of us…..a moment made possible because God put a person in need in front of someone who could help with a compassionate ear. This was a “God moment” for sure as another one of my formerly homeless friends would say. This Easter I pray that you and your family have many God moments as you encounter the Risen Christ in your lives and surrender to his grace, his living presence in the Holy Spirit that comforts and strengthens us all. Peace to you and thanks for your prayers for all of our Wounded Warriors. Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue that I may know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them,” says Isaiah in today’s first reading. The gifts God has given us are likewise given for the good of others. How am I using my gifts?

THE GOOD FRIDAY FUGUE The sideways music is the theme to the so-called Good Friday Fugue, from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier. This sounds eerie enough when played, but Bach intends it to be a visual reminder of the crucifixion; it’s a painting made with notes. At the top (the alto clef) is Pi-late’s sign: Jesus, King of the Jews (Jesu Rex). The sharps underneath that are the crown of thorns.

The C# is his head, the sharp on the B# is his pierced side. The stems on the half notes are his arms out stretched, the D# is his bent knee. Very mysterious, and even more so: the music sounds like the painting.

HOLY WEEK REHEARSALS If you are an Altar Server and scheduled to serve for a Triduum service, please note, it is mandatory for you to attend rehearsals. If you are a Eucharistic Minister and attend any service, please see the sacristan before Mass if you can serve if needed.
