The month of December has come and gone. For myself and others there was not much riding activity during the month. I know that even the monthly breakfast ride turned into a “going across the street for breakfast”.

By the time you read this the New Year’s Day brunch will have happened. I am really hoping for decent weather on January 1st to allow for the first ride of 2020. The next major event for 2020 will be our annual dinner/meeting to be held on January 19th at the Lakeside Bar & Grill in Reno.

For 2020 we will continue with our monthly Breakfast Rides, our monthly Street & GS Rides, April thru Septem-ber. Then following the riding season we will have our an-nual picnic in October.

But, first things first! We need members to take on the roles that keep our club functioning.

The roles deal with our Web Site, our Email account, and officer roles. Please consider serving our club. Appoint-ments and elections will take place on January 19th at our annual meeting.

For myself, I am looking forward to 2020 to put more miles on my GTL traveling to many new locations.

Ride Safe

Only Nick and Doug chose to ride to the December Breakfast Ride. But to be honest, they only rode to and from our Starbucks meeting site.

Maybe they can claim the ride from Starbucks to the Sunrise Cafe as the December Breakfast Ride even if it was only about half a mile. We High Beemers like to say that one of the things we enjoy about Reno is that we can ride twelve months of the year.

We were honored that our loyal leader Fred Barrie joined us for coffee. His loving wife Sandie had just passed after her battle with cancer.

With luck on January 1st we'll awake to dry pavement and 40°, warming to 55°, for a perfect January ride after our brunch at Mimi's. Remember, if you choose not to ride on the 1st you are still welcomed to come for the brunch. (In the past some have done this and even showed up in their riding gear.)

The 2019 Ride Nevada contest was designed to have riders visit the 23 State Parks in Nevada, either alone or in groups. From my experience, the parks in Eastern and North Eastern Nevada were great, and the incentive to visit them during the contest gave me some great spots to visit for future extended stays. Plus, I learned of the Senior Pass for the Nevada State Parks, in which for $35 per year, anyone 65 years or older who has lived in Nevada for at least 5 years can get ac-cess, camping and boat launching at any of the parks. Truly a great deal!

The results are in and the results have been tabulated – through this contest, club members rec-orded 241 visits to the parks all over the state. Six people (Ernie Barager, Sam Bexon, Jim Ed-wards, Roger Malone, Tracey McCormick and I) made it to all 21 parks! All of us ended up with memorable experiences, whether it was GSA’s getting stuck in the mud and falling over miles from anywhere, or interesting interactions with park rangers at the entrance stations who seemed to have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. Now that we’ve moved into 2020, the State Park ride is ancient history as the new ride will be to 38 museums and odd places around the state (this raises the bar for the overachievers in the club J). All but three of the museums are free (though donations are greatly appreciated), so in addition to getting a chance to explore our great state, and find lots of amazing roads, you’ll also get to soak in a bit of the culture and history of the state.

Full details and entry forms will be available at the annual dinner meeting on January 19th, after

which you can contact me ([email protected]), to join the contest. As always, the entry fee is $20, which is raffled off at the next club dinner. Good luck and Have fun!

Member’s Ride –THE TATw By Martin Barre

All characters and events depicted in this article are entirely fictitious. Any similarity to actual events or persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

“How about riding the Pan American highway?”, I said as we were sitting at the Landwer café, on a

wet Friday morning in November 2018. “I don’t know about that” said JP, “but if you are willing to

consider the TAT, I will gladly join you.”

“What’s the TAT?” I asked.

“The TAT stands for the Trans American Trail”, he answered, “It is a set of off-road trails that con-

nect the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. In 2014, I was packing up my GS in a motel in Eureka (NV)

when a large group of Dual Sport motorcycles pulled into town. Two of them who were riding DR

650s stopped to chat and told me that they shipped their motorcycles from New Zealand and were

on the last days of the TAT with the Shadows of the Rockies addition. When I asked them what it

was like, they stared down at my GSA800 and said that I wouldn’t be able to do it on this bike.

Some of the switchbacks were so hard that they had to pull the front wheel of the bike by hand in

order to negotiate the turn.”

Both of us grabbed our cell phones to dig up the basic information.

What I learned was that the TAT is the brain child of Sam Correro who mapped approximately

6000 miles of off-road trails that connect the two coasts from East to West with a few South to

North options. https://www.transamtrail.com/

I have done a few multi week trips with JP and he is an ok guy, but I got somewhat tired of the

slow road trips, so an off-road trip might be a good change.

Trouble was that neither of us rides in the dirt.

And so began about 7 months of preparation that culminated in the best trip of 2019.

Based on the Kiwis’ advice we spent many hours researching which motorcycles are the most suit-

able for this sort of trip. As it turns out, it is not enough to seek advice but also important to find the

right advisor, since almost every person that we spoke to had an opinion, despite the fact that

none of them knew the TAT.

In the end, our best advisors were:

Sam Correro (through his web site)- get a sub 300 lb bike that is street legal

Lane Swall – talk to Scott McKay

Scott McKay – get a DRZ 400.

In January, we signed up for an introductory off-road class which was called the VIP experience, 2

hours on 2 motorcycles with 2 instructors. The motorcycles that were supplied were Yamaha

WR250Rs and the lead instructor sang its praise. Compared to the DRZ, the WR comes with good

suspension straight out of the box, it is fuel injected (which should be helpful given the significant

elevation changes we will ride through), and doesn’t require frequent service.

We researched the bike some more and found that Cycle World had an article about

“adventurising “ the WR and we followed most of the recommendations that were in the article.

https://www.cycleworld.com/2014/09/09/yamaha-wr250r-adventure-bike-conversion-project/

There were also casualties in the process, The K1300 and R1200RS, two loyal steads, which car-ried us and others, on long trips through the west, were traded in for the two Mighty Yammies.

Goodbye faithful friends

The package that one can get from Sam Correro includes maps, roll charts and GPX files of the

TAT. Sam offers recommendation on how much to ride in each day, where to stay, where to get

gas and food– making planning very easy.

As we dug deeper into the plan it became clear that we couldn’t afford the time commitment that

the full trail requires and so we decided to settle for the western part-3000 miles starting in SE Col-

orado. And from that point we called our trip the TATw (w for west). We planned to start the ride

after Memorial Day, knowing that it may be too early for the higher elevation in the Rockies, but

hoping to avoid forest fire issues in the Oregon sections.

Over the winter and the spring, we practiced as much as we could, mostly on hard packed and

rocky terrain with the occasional patch of sand or pool of mud.

Reservations were made for accommodations along the way. Scott Stevenson who owns the 3

Step Hideaway resort, south of Moab, was very helpful in suggesting alternative routes to sections

that might still be covered in snow.

The logistics were quite complicated. The motorcycles were being prepared in Reno but neither I nor JP were able to inspect them, and they were supposed to be shipped from Reno to the Caths, JP’s family in Golden Colorado which served as our staging point. The first time we saw the com-pleted motorcycles was two days before we started the ride. Golden was also a staging area for the gear that we were accumulating; spare parts, tools, dehy-

drated food, maps, riding gear.

The Caths’ help was truly indispensable, not just in taking delivery of all of our stuff but also in the

two days of the final preparation of the motorcycles, picking us from the airport, feeding us, lodging

us, taking us again to the airport to pick up my riding gear which didn’t show when I arrived, and

finally driving us the 200 miles to our starting point near Ludlow, CO.

The bike preparation included:

• 4.7 gallon gas tank in lieu of the stock 2 gallon tank

• Change the rear sprocket from 43 to 48 teeth.

• Soft panniers

• Luggage rack

• Aluminum bash plate and radiator guard

• Pro Taper bars

• GPS Garmin GPSMAP 276CX

• More resilient mirrors (Diamond Back)

• Nifty hand and foot controls

• Modified seat (standard height for me and tall for JP)

• Two 1-gallon Rotopax for each bike for extra water

We spent a lot of time trying to decide which tires to install and to figure out how long we could ex-

pect them to last, we ended up with Metzler 6 Days Extreme tires with heavy duty tubes.

We scheduled service for the motorcycles in the Yamaha dealership of Twin Falls, ID which was roughly our halfway point.

Building the Long Distance Yammies- just add 2 standard motorcycles to the mix.

The day before the departure– loading the motorcycles, preparing our personal kit.

What was it like? Fantastic obviously!

Our off-road journey took us through 5 states (CO, UT, NV, ID and OR) but we actually only skirt-

ed the NV/UT border between Baker and Wendover so NV shouldn’t be included in the list. The

most impressive routes were through UT and OR, probably because the snow in the San Juan

mountains robbed us of the more spectacular aspects of CO.

The track goes through very easy gravel roads for the most part, with weather having the biggest

influence on the trail conditions. Since it was early in the season, I don’t recall a single stretch of

sand and there was just one miserable day in the mud and 3 days where we hit snow (having to

turn back every time).

In other words, we may have been able to complete most of the trip on a GSA 800, but those four

instances reminded us why the fully loaded Mighty Yammies were just enough. And in some of the

broken trail sections of Oregon a GSA would have required a much slower pace.

We planned on 6 hours of riding per day (assuming an average speed of 20 mph off-road), Which

turned out to be a smart decision as we were always able to get to town before dark, even when

mishap struck us.

We wanted to plan a rest day every 6 days but couldn’t afford to extend our vacation that much. If

you have a chance to ride a similar trip, you should consider this option.

Page 12: Page 1 Dim Bulb DIM BULB January 2020highbeemers.org/uploads/1/0/8/7/108729945/jan_2020_dimbulb_-_co… · Page 5 Dim Bulb Jan 2020 Volume 30 Issue 1 Now that we’ve moved into 2020,

They say that an adventure is a catastrophe with a happy ending, so here is a short list of our ad-ventures:

Snow

We were advised by Randy Peterson and John Proto to stay away from snow, but we had to learn

this lesson for ourselves.

The first time was on day 3, trying to cross the Marshall Pass in Colorado:

As we got close to an altitude of 10,000 feet, the trail was gradually getting covered in snow. Initially

there were tracks through the snow, so we were able to forge on, but it was getting more and more

challenging to push the motorcycles. And then we both dropped our Yammies. JP’s fall was espe-

cially spectacular since the combination of his stature, the large tank with the tank bag, the panniers

and the massive duffle bag in the back kept him firmly secured to the bike and he couldn’t get away

from it as it went down.

After half a mile the trail was completely covered in snow. We walked for another 1/8 of a mile and it

soon (if you can say that about walking in snow wearing MX boot) became clear that the pass was

nowhere near, so we turned back and fought the icy surface in the opposite direction.

Page 13: Page 1 Dim Bulb DIM BULB January 2020highbeemers.org/uploads/1/0/8/7/108729945/jan_2020_dimbulb_-_co… · Page 5 Dim Bulb Jan 2020 Volume 30 Issue 1 Now that we’ve moved into 2020,

Page 13 Dim Bulb Jan 2020

Volume 30 Issue 1

We rode back almost to our starting point and then crossed the mountain range through the Mon-arch pass, on pavement. The Klim Dakar Jacket with a sweatshirt underneath and a rain suit over provided very little relief from the cold. We were riding at just 28 degrees [F] and it was snowing near the pass, but fortunately it wasn’t accumulating.

After thawing our fingers at a café at the western bottom of the pass we continued off-road and

crossed our second pass (which was at about 7500 ft), had some navigation issues, and then, as

we were getting very close to our third and final pass for the day, the Los Pinos, we reached a

locked gate and had to back track 20 miles and continue on pavement. With the miserable cold,

we decided to forego our reservations in Lake City and stop at the first hotel we saw in Gunnison,

CO.

We came across snow twice more on days 7 (in the Wasatch Range in Utah) and 14 (a little north

of Crater Lake). I can say that on day 7 we were smarter and heeded the explicit instructions that

we got from Randy Peterson the night before.

On day 14 we decided to try and persevere a little more as the our improved navigation tools indi-

cated that we were about 150 ft from the top of the Windigo pass, and as it was just unfathomable

that in the middle of June we would be stopped by snow at 5200 ft.

Fathomable or not it seems that whomever didn’t want us to go over the pass, didn’t only lay down the obstacle of snow, but also brought over thousands of mosquitos to defend the fortifica-tions. As soon as we were stopped, they swarmed us and every second of being immobile was unpleasant.

Mud (and tools)

In a typical fashion as soon as we crossed into Oregon, it started raining and the trail became slimy.

I was doing alright but JP struggled and dropped his bike twice, so we slowed down. As we were

crossing a small stream, I noticed that my engine high temperature warning light was on, so we

stopped as soon as it became practical.

We quickly discovered the plastic radiator fan had broken from its shaft. We were concerned that

there could be further damage caused by the fan motor running in this condition and wanted to re-

move the fuse. Finding the fuse box wasn’t exactly easy, but even after we found it our 6mm

wrench wouldn’t open the box, and a 6mm socket is required. Interestingly, Yamaha didn’t provide

such a socket in its tool set and the kit that we had didn’t have such a small socket.

We stood in the rain trying to devise an alternate route and decided that I would ride as fast as pos-

sible, in order to have enough airflow to cool the engine and would, periodically, kill the engine and

wait for JP.

As luck would have it within 500 ft we emerged from the muddy section and before long we were on a paved Forest Service road, which got us to John Day before dark. The generous portions of single malt Scotch at The Outpost worked wonders in declaring the day as a great success.

Page 15: Page 1 Dim Bulb DIM BULB January 2020highbeemers.org/uploads/1/0/8/7/108729945/jan_2020_dimbulb_-_co… · Page 5 Dim Bulb Jan 2020 Volume 30 Issue 1 Now that we’ve moved into 2020,

Tires and Service

The combination of the load on the bike and the substantial stretch of pavement that we had to ride

wore out the rear tires in about 2000 miles. Finding tires in Nampa, ID wasn’t easy, but we found

some Dunlop D606s, which carried us through the rest of the trip. In hindsight we should have or-

dered tires and scheduled their replacement at our midpoint service stop.

Due to the fan failure we were uncomfortable riding off-road and had to ride to the nearest Yamaha

service in Bend, OR. The experience was bittersweet.

The bitter -Before we left for Bend we asked the dealership where we bought the bikes (and who

were aware of our expedition) to call the Bend dealership and explain what we needed so that they

can get ready with the part. When we arrived in Bend, we realized that nothing had been done to

help us. The service technician told us that they don’t have the part and won’t have it until after the

weekend.

The sweet – At some point the service manager intervened directing the technicians to remove a

fan from a bike on the show room floor and had us on our way by late afternoon.

The sour – Though we bought an extended warranty from Yamaha for the motorcycles, when the Bend dealership called the regional service manager, they concluded that the added radiator guard caused the damage and that it shouldn’t be covered by the warranty. When we spoke with the dealership that supplied and prepared the motorcycles, they were unwilling to take any responsibil-ity either. Yamaha said that because the shroud around the fan was removed when the radiator guard was installed, they wouldn’t respect the warranty. We didn’t have the time to stay and argue over this, and were thankful for the help we did get, but on the ride back to Prineville we had time to “stew” over this.

The WR has an induced flow system, and as such there is no merit in the claim that this allowed a foreign object to go through the fan and cause the bushing failure. On the other the removal of the shroud does hamper the cooling efficiency of the fan and should be looked at. So we are disap-pointed both by the workmanship of the dealership and by their quality of service, which is too bad because the WR250R is somewhat unique in the dual sport segment.

Best place to stay

The 3 Step Hideaway, near Moab was just great! It is a resort set up for off road riders and even of-

fers a workshop for minor bike maintenance.

I think that this could be a good base camp for rides in the vicinity of Moab. Scott, the owner, is a

wealth of knowledge when it comes to trails in the vicinity.

The second best place was the Diamond Lake Resort (north of Crater Lake, OR), not so much for its facilities but due to its location.

Parts to skip

Tremonton, UT to Nampa, ID - Some of the farm land is very pretty and we also found ourselves in

the middle of a cattle drive, but for the most part this whole stretch isn’t very interesting. It should be

noted that this is a recent change to the TAT track (a more southerly route) that was developed in or-

der to bypass areas in the Sawtooth mountains that tend to be very difficult when it rains. There is

nothing wrong in riding those parts but in hindsight we could have covered them on pavement in or-

der to provide for a rest day somewhere else

Most memorable events

Racing with a small herd of mustangs, the baby antelopes, bear cubs

Least used piece of gear

We were very well equipped and were fortunate not to have a single flat, so tools and spares should-

n't be on that list.

This puts either the Rotopax, the tent, or the drone that we carried with us as the least used item.

Since the tent was carried as a contingency and water is also very important, the award will have to

go to the drone. Between downloading and editing the footage from the helmet cameras, going

through the still shots and writing a daily report, we had no energy left to learn how to use the drone

or to stop and stage any footage with it.

Navigation

Other than the 6 mm socket the biggest mistake that we made in preparation was with our GPS. In

all the times that I bought a bike from Sierra BMW, paying for a dealer installed GPS unit meant get-

ting a unit with pre-installed maps. I was naïve to expect the same service for this trip as well, howev-

er the units were installed with very basic information. It took us a few days to get to a hotel with a

fast internet connection where we could download and install the topographic version in the mean-

time we were navigating according to bread crumbs on the GPS and Sam’s paper maps ( mostly ok

but not great). When we ran into trouble on the way to John Day the GPS (with the topographic

package) and Sam’s maps were not enough to devise the alternative route and the state map was

barely helpful (Sam’s maps are printed on regular paper and of course it was raining…). So if you

can, get better maps of the area. For us, there was no need in the roll charts that we bought from

Sam.

The most tiring thing to do

After a while, loading the bike every morning and unloading it in the evening gets old (as funny as it may sound).

Page 22: Page 1 Dim Bulb DIM BULB January 2020highbeemers.org/uploads/1/0/8/7/108729945/jan_2020_dimbulb_-_co… · Page 5 Dim Bulb Jan 2020 Volume 30 Issue 1 Now that we’ve moved into 2020,

Most memorable encounter

From my experience riding as a team of motorcy-

clists (as opposed to riding alone) reduces the in-

teraction with the people around you. The interac-

tion we did have were at the 3 Step Hideaway,

where we met other motorcyclists and had lengthy

conversations on … motorcycles (and world af-

fairs)

In Oregon we met Antonio, a Spanish welder who has been working all over the world for the last

15 years. He’s 38, no kids.

He was riding an old loaded bike, which looked like a KLR 650. Riding from Texas to Alaska and

from there doing the Pan American Highway all the way to the southern tip of South America.

Camping in a tent and splurging on a motel room every 4 days. Budgeted himself on $45 a day-

tight. Planning to spend 2 months in Alaska and then head south.

Most Ridiculous Moments.

I had the pleasure of contributing the most silly and unnecessary falls, both in attempts to place

the bike in hotel parking lots. The first came after leaning the bike but forgetting (?) to extend a

leg. My more impressive fall was riding, while standing, over a sidewalk and a parking block, los-

ing it and nearly taking JP's bike down with me. Making a hurried embarrassed exit couldn't hap-

pen quickly enough.

Final thoughts

It was a wonderful endeavor. It is a little disappointing that we couldn't do the full TAT but only

from a bragging rights perspective. The pace and the trail allows for a very different appreciation

of the West’s beauty.

We were pleasantly surprised that most of the logistics actually worked, but this is mostly due to the Cath family in Colorado who took wonderful care of us. The few challenges that we did have were mostly due to not having adequate time to try the motorcycles before going on the ride and our decision to do an early season ride (a calculated risk).

For those who are lucky enough to live in Northern Nevada shorter expeditions to the best sec-

tions of the trail are an easy alternative. It allows one to enjoy the best parts of the trail with much

simpler logistics and with a lighter bike.

We hope to do just that in 2020.

Gratitude

Many people made this trip possible. We can’t express our thanks enough first and foremost to our families for allowing us to go on this trip, and to the Caths for their immense physical (and lo-gistical) help.

Thanks go to Scott, Lane, Randy and John for their advice, our friends for following and encour-aging us, Piru for designing the trip’s logo, Sam for making the TAT available for the public and the all of the good people that we met along the way.

2020 High Beemer Rides ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are the planned dates of the rides for the upcoming year. If you would like to be the leader of any of the High Beemer SR or GS rides, let me know via email ([email protected]) or at the January 19th dinner meeting. Breakfast Rides (BR) are on the third Monday of each month, starting at Starbucks on Wedge Parkway. Doug Laird or his backup (Nick) will lead the rides. Destinations are determined by the riders in attendance. Usually back in Reno by 12-12:30pm. These rides are held year around and if the weather is inclement everyone is encouraged to show up in an alternate vehicle. Street Rides (SR) are road rides that occur on third Saturday or Sunday of each month. The ride leader will determine the ride date, gathering point, route, and lunch location. The ride leader shares the details of the ride with everyone via our club email and newsletter. On the day of the ride, the leader takes a headcount at the gathering point and then calls ahead to the restaurant to make a reservation for the group. The route is a road ride, usually several hours long, possibly with a break stop on the way to the lunch site. The return trip is often open, allowing riders the option of returning to Reno as a group, or on their own. Off Road Rides (GS) are on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month. The GS leader follows the same procedures as a Club Ride, except that the GS ride might include a “brown bag” lunch (rather than a restau-rant lunch) due to routing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- January 2020 Brunch and Road Ride: Jan 1 Annual Meeting/Dinner: Jan 19 April 2020 BR: Apr 20 SR: Apr 18 or 19 (President’s Ride) GS: Apr 25 or 26 May 2020 BR: May 18 SR: May 16 or 17 GS: May 23 or 24 June 2020 BR: Jun 15 SR: Jun 20 (Dinner at the Iron Door -Sara and Doug Laird) GS: Jun 27 or 28 July 2020 BR: Jul 20 SR: Jul 18 or 19 GS: Jul 25 or 26 August 2020 BR: Aug 17 SR: Aug 15 or 16 GS: Aug 22 or 23 September 2020 BR: Sep 21 SR: Sep 19 or 20 GS: Sep 26 or 27 October 2020 Annual BBQ: Oct 11

HIGH BEEMERS GROUP RIDE GUIDELINES:

The purpose of the High Beemer Group Ride Guidelines is to ensure a successful, enjoyable, and

safe group ride.

Ride Leader Responsibilities:

Determines the following:

1 - Where to?

2 – Distance & Time to complete the ride.

3 – Availability of gas/convenience stops.

4 – Lunch/Dinner location.

5 – Performs a pre-ride to validate distance, time, gas/convenience stops, lunch/

dinner location, and condition of roads.

6 – Enlists a member to act as Sweeper for the ride.

7 – Adjusts ride plan as required.

8 – Communicates ride plan to members.

Sweeper Responsibilities:

2 – Have a camera (optional).

3 – Have cell phone number of Ride Leader and at least two other riders.

4 – Ensures that they are the last rider. If another rider stops, the Sweeper is available to

provide assistance if necessary.

5 – Communicates to Ride Leader via cell phone to apprise him/her of any potential situa-

tion the Ride Leader needs to be aware of.

1 – Ensure that you have exchanged cell phone numbers with the Sweeper and have cell

phone numbers of at least two other riders.

2 – Distribute directions and an itinerary to all riders.

3 – Ensure that a first aid kit and tool kit are available.

4 – Keep groups manageable. An ideal group size is 5 – 7 riders. If more riders are availa-

ble, break the ride into groups, depending on total number of riders. Assign responsibilities

as required.

5 – Take a physical count on total number of riders.

Page 27: Page 1 Dim Bulb DIM BULB January 2020highbeemers.org/uploads/1/0/8/7/108729945/jan_2020_dimbulb_-_co… · Page 5 Dim Bulb Jan 2020 Volume 30 Issue 1 Now that we’ve moved into 2020,

Volume 30 Issue 1

Group Rider’s Responsibilities:

1 – Arrive prepared (full gas tank) and on time.

2 – Ride in Formation: (Highway – Staggered Formation) Ride Leader should be in left third

of lane. Next rider should be in right third of lane, next rider back to the left third of lane and

so on. Preferably there should be a two second gap between riders. Riders should ride sin-

gle file when the road conditions are curvy; there is poor visibility, and poor road surfaces,

when entering/leaving the highway or other situations when an increased space cushion or

maneuvering room is required. MSF recommends a minimum of two seconds between rid-

ers.

NOTE: Avoid side by side formation. If you needed to avoid a hazard, you would not have

room to do so.

3 – If separated from the group, don’t panic. Each rider should know before hand the desti-

nation and be provided with directions.

4 – For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situ-

ation warrants.

5 - If a rider plans to ride on their own and eventually meet up with the group, the ride lead-

er should be advised prior to departure.

6 - If a rider plans to break off from the group they should advise the ride leader at a rally

point or meeting location prior to leaving the group.

7 - All riders/passengers must obey state law and wear an approved helmet.

NOTE: No Alcohol should be consumed on a club ride.

8 - It is highly recommended that all riders/passengers wear protective clothing while on club

rides.

9 - We represent motorcyclists to motorists so PLEASE drive appropriately.

10 - This is a group ride that riders have chosen to participate in. Riders: please be patient, toler-

ant and respectful of others needs; please try to stay together and look out for the well being of

other participants.

11 – Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling be-

hind, slow down so they may catch up. If all riders in the group use this technique, the group

should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

12 – Each rider is responsible for the rider behind him. The rider should SAFELY pause at each

major turn to ensure the following rider stays on the route. The rider waits until the following rider

is able to continue.

13 - Someone from the ride should write a story of the trip for the newsletter editor.

Enjoy the ride!
