NEW DELHI, June 22:
India today said it was inconstant touch withInternational Red Crescent inIraq, countries of the region andall other concerned who canoffer help in securing release of39 Indian construction workerswho were kidnapped fromMosul, the second largest Iraqicity seized by Sunni militants.
Sources said Governmentcontinued to be in activeengagement and was doingeverything possible to ensurerelease of the Indians.
40 Indians were abductedfrom Mosul and one of them hadfled from captivity and hadshared various details about thecaptors to the Indian authoritieswhich yesterday indicated thatthey had come to know aboutthe abductors.
Government has alreadysought help from a number ofcountries in the region besidesIraqi authorities, the UNAssistance Mission in Iraq(UNAMI) and various otherhumanitarian agencies workingin the trouble-torn country toresolve the crisis.
Iraq is witnessing seriousstrife with Sunni militants,backed by al Qaeda, capturing
two key cities and marchingtowards Baghdad.
Hundreds of thousands ofIraqis have been displaced in thefighting that broke out on June 10.
The sources saidGovernment was also in con-stant touch with the 46 nurseswho are stranded in a hospital inTikrit, another violence-affectedcity which also fell to the Sunnimilitant group ISIS (IslamicState of Iraq and Syria).
It has already taken over sev-eral parts of Iraq and wasadvancing towards Baghdad.
The nurses are in a hospitaland food was being provided tothem.
A total of 120 Indians werein violence-hit areas in the oil-rich Gulf nation out of which 16have already been evacuatedand one of those kidnapped hasfled from captivity.
Now 103 Indians remainedin the conflict zone including 46nurses and 39 Indians in captiv-ity.
The sources said securingrelease of the kidnapped Indiansand moving remaining othersfrom the conflict zone wasGovernment’s top priority.
Sources said Governmentwas offering assistance to agroup of Indians, which, accord-
ing to Amnesty International,was stranded in Najaf. TheIndian Embassy in Baghdad wasin touch with the companywhich reportedly refused toreturn passports to the Indianemployees.
They said places like Najaf,Basra and Baghdad were freefrom any violence but noted thatIndian embassy will provideassistance if Indians living inthese areas also want to leavethe country.(PTI)
