Our students have been busy both in their classes and in their clubs and activities, and what very recently seemed like a new school year has settled into a familiar but rewarding routine. One highlight of the Fall is that our students are going out on job shadowing and internship opportunities. We are encouraged by many of our community partners who’ve already stepped up and opened their doors. When rising UD Engineering senior, Brandon Dabney, has faced challenges, his philosophy has always been “to persevere and get the best education possible.” Since his mother passed in 2010 when Brandon was just 15, he decided to honor her by pursuing a legacy of achievements. He started by enrolling in the Engineering Technology career pathway at Ponitz Career Technology Center in Dayton Public Schools. “Engineering has been one of my passions ever since I was little. It became a true calling when I began getting involved in FIRST robotics. I chose Ponitz Engineering to expand my knowledge about engineering and to see if I really wanted to make it my life-long career.”

Under the direction of instructor, David Andrews, Brandon not only found that he enjoyed engineering but also that he could compete against his peers at other high schools and win. During his education at Ponitz, Brandon

used his experience in FIRST robotics league to compete in an annual Battlebots competition. With his team of peers and industry professionals at Ponitz, he was able to design, build, and perfect his skills in robotics to calmly and methodically defeat the other robots that competing teams sent his way. At the same time, he defeated any doubt that he could approach the challenges of higher education to earn a degree in the engineering field.

Ponitz Career Technology Center instructors work with industry partners in order to

place students into job shadows and internships in their fields

of interest while they are still in high school. Some of these internships turn into paid jobs. Brandon so impressed local engineering firms

Custom Manufacturing Solutions and Lord

Corporation, that he was able to add them to his resumé before

exiting high school. He was exposed to roles in machining, CNC work, maintenance, shipping and receiving, and documenting

and sorting sensitive files alongside career engineers.

Knowing that academics alone would not prepare him for the challenge of being a valuable team player with future colleagues, Brandon joined his high school’s baseball, soccer, and wrestling teams. Maintaining a busy academic schedule, and balancing that with extra curricular activities taught him valuable skills in time management and earned him great friends along the way.

As he entered his senior year of high school, Brandon applied to University of Dayton’s esteemed engineering college and was accepted. During his tenure at the University of Dayton, he has stayed on a relentless course of success in academics, on-the-job training, and extracurricular activities. As President of the Wrestling team and Vice President of the Robotics team at UD, Brandon is making good use of his time and continuing to make strides in his education and social life. Best of all, because of the multiple scholarships he received for his many accomplishments, he won’t have any student loan debt upon graduation.
