What Career Coaching Is

“Career coaching is an interactive process of exploring work-related issues – leading to effective action – in which the coach acts as both a catalyst and facilitator of individual and, in turn, organizational development and transformation.”

Career Coaching vs. Career Counseling

Similarities:

Both deal with job search and career design

Both use assessments Both help people with

career-related issues Neither works with mentally

ill people unless counselor is so trained

Differences:

Billing/venue: Counselors bill by the hour, work face-to-face and in one-hour segments; Coaches bill by the month, work by phone and in half-hour segments

Focus: Coaching focuses more on results and action than counseling; Counseling is more directive

Credentials: Counselors usually must have counseling degree; coaches should have coach certification
