DECEMBER 2006 PAGE 2 SYSCO NEWS

One of the goals of both the outgoing Board and the new Board of Directors is to have you as a member involved in SYSCO, on and off of the race course. That focal point for being involved is the monthly general membership meetings (January 15 is the next meeting). They are searching for ways to attract you to non-race club events and to expand the social element of the club. They feel that each of you have something to offer to the group, and you will be enriched by the offerings of others.

We learned a lot from our “First Annual Chateau SYSCO Wine Tasting” last year and this year we have plans for the “Second Annual Chateau SYSCO Wine Tasting,” February 17. This will be an opportunity to come greet and share ideas in a social setting with those who for most of the season we only wave to while on the river. And, at the same time, it is an opportunity to tell Board members what would draw you to non-race SYSCO events. Make this a Winter Time must do event.

The Oregon State Marine Board is trying to get all boaters to have an Oregon Boater Education Card. For 2007 the minimum age is 60 to be allowed to operate a boat without the card, and I think that a majority of SYSCO members are below that age. The Card involves a knowledge test and a small fee, but not having the card involves a $97 fine and you will still need to pass the test and pay the fee. All Pancho III operators must have the card.

Looking at the race schedule I see that the SixPac has not been scheduled for 2007, so those looking for a downriver sail are always welcome to join the SYSCO Delta Cruisers. We will be meeting Saturday, July 29, 2007 at Martin Island for those needing to schedule vacation time.

On a personal note, I am going to end 40 years of going to the shop and will retire this month. Vicki and I hope that each of you can share this season with friends and family and we want to wish each of you a Happy Holiday and prosperous New Year.

See you at the Boat Show

MEMBERSHIP:Membership renewals will be sent out by the 15th

of December along with an information page regarding new and upcoming general meeting programs.

NEW BUSINESS:We are working on different ways to increase

participation at the general meetings. Karen had an idea about including door prizes at the meetings. We’ve been asking for some entertainment, like sailing video’s, personal sailing adventures, or back to more of an instructional venue. We want to know if you, the members, have any suggestions. Please talk with any of the new officers and give them your ideas or, better yet, volunteer to help us line up the entertainment for the meetings. There will be a program set up for every general meeting in 2007.

Does anyone have any great sailing related videos they’d like to share? Please let us know.

Karen has set up the January general meeting with Rich Jones and Edie Felix. It will be about their sailing experiences from Hawaii to Seattle on a 30 foot sailboat without a motor, please come and join us. They always have a great presentation. Sandy is working on getting Allison the surveyor to share her experiences with us. Maybe we could learn a thing or two.

DON’T FORGET ---- If you will be 60 or younger in 2007, you will need to carry a Boater Education Card when operating your boat if it’s greater than 10 hp.

BOAT SHOW:Alan said the booth setup is ready to go. He is still

looking for volunteers. Have you signed up yet.?Meeting adjouned, M/S

Commodore’s CommentsPHIL CAMPAGNA

The Christmas tree is up and the decorations are hung. The only thing left to do is write my last Commodore’s Comments for this newsletter. My time with SYSCO began when I decided to purchase a J24 out of the Oregonian in late ‘98. Since I was planning on racing her, it seemed logical to join a club for which members can race their events for free. So in 1999, I joined as a racer/owner, but never would have guessed that the years to come would see me as banquet chair for

two years, Vice Commodore for two years and most recently Commodore for the last two years.

My personal time spent addressing the duties these positions offered was a small price for the relationships formed with my fellow members of this sailing club. What was enjoyed most was the relations shared with fellow board members, being on the same team whose ultimate goal is pleasing its membership. This sailing club is heading in the right direction and I’m pleased to see new leadership on our 2007 board. Please support them however possible and see the success of SYSCO shine on for another 28 years!

Oh, by the way, don’t forget our annual social and membership drive on Feb 17th at Rose City Yacht Club. Stay tuned for details.

Enjoy your holiday season.

Boating Safety Cards required for all 60 and Younger

Beginning in 2007, powerboat operators 60 and younger will be required to take a boating safety course and carry their boater education card when operating boats greater than 10 hp.

There are about 36,000 registered boat owners between 51 and 60 years old who will need boater education cards in 2007, according to MariAnn Koloszar, Education Coordinator for the Oregon State Marine Board. So far the Marine Board has issued almost 150,000 cards and has one of the top compliances for mandatory education in the nation. The fine for not carrying a card, along with other law

enforcement violation fines, was increased in 2006 from $94 to $97.

While taking the test online is an easy way to get the required certificate, boaters can also boaters.” Koloszar adds. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, Oregon State Marine Board Volunteer Instructors and other private providers offer such classroom courses.

The local Sheriff’s office offers free equivalency exams that are designed for the experienced boater. Approved Internet courses are also available and course information can all be found at the Marine Board’s website at www.boatoregon.com. Prices for the different education options range from free to around $45. Classes and equivalency exams are scheduled to fit boaters’ needs.
