Public Forums Scheduled For Study PIERRE — Three public forums seeking input on a South

Earlier in July, the state departments of Human Servicesand Labor and Regulation selected Health Management As-sociates to carry out a study on the treatment of autismspectrum disorders for children in South Dakota.
A public forum will be held at the Ramkota Amphithe-ater II, 3200 W. Maple St., Sioux Falls, at 5-6:30 p.m. Aug. 21.
The public forums will offer a chance for families, advo-cacy groups, legislators, policy leaders and others affectedby autism spectrum disorder to provide input. Interestedindividuals may also provide information via e-mail [email protected]. State officials have previouslystated that public input will be critical to the success ofthe study.
The study, prescribed during the 2014 legislative ses-sion, will analyze the availability and certification ofproviders, accepted treatments and outcomes, and thecosts and benefits of autism services for children as well asthe impact of requiring insurance plans to cover the vari-ous associated services. A report will be issued to the Gov-ernor and Legislature by Nov. 15.

PHOTO: YANKTON PRISON CAMPThe last surviving American Elm tree from the Yankton College era at FPC Yankton, which was planted sometime between 1954 and1964, was recently a Dutch Elm disease casualty. In the process of cutting down the tree for removal, alternative uses were considered.A local inmate who takes part in education based art classes said he would like the opportunity to carve an eagle depiction from thetree. The project displays a returning eagle delivering a fish to the nest, which is constructed of wood trimmed from a variety of otherlocal trees and will need to be replaced every five to six years as it decays. The project was recently completed with additional habitatplants added to surround the tree.
