Own A Life Foundation

Own A Life (OAL) Foundation is a Non-Profit organization working for social development of Pakistan since 2009. Currently it is working in 9 districts of all provinces of Pakistan. In addition, the Foundation has carried out substantial relief work in areas of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces through its two offices (including a head office at Lahore and a Liaison office at Karachi). OAL started its journey with prime focus on Education and provision of medical facilities at micro level by strengthening community level schools and dispensaries in suburbs of Lahore, Karachi and Abbotabad. Once OAL mobilized enough resources the organization started expanding its programs for realization of its vision. The organization is currently working in the following sectors:

Orphan Care

Environment & Infrastructure

Basic Health Education and Services

Disaster Response

Education

Agriculture & Food Security

Livelihood

The organization is managed by a Board of Directors, a President, a Vice President, a General Manager and a Manager/In-Charge for each core program. The organization has a team of 03 engineers, 03 Doctors and 14 paramedic staff. Own A Life Foundation is registered as a Non-Profit Community Development Organization with City District Government Lahore under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 through Registration Number RP/7821/L/S/12/1206

OAL was established by a group of social activists who committed to bring positive change in the lives of marginalized communities. The organization started its journey as a community level organization. Education being of core importance to the development of Pakistan was the first sector to be launched by OAL. The first step was the establishment of “Own School System”. Ultimately, the management of OAL Foundation, following a strategic vision expanded its areas of operation for poverty alleviation. The next step was the establishment of Human Rights, a core program at OAL. Soon after that was the realization of OAL’s dream to establish another program, the Environment & Infrastructure program. This is the core program at OAL with current geographic spread in six district two provinces of Pakistan. The organization has a mandate to respond in emergencies / disasters. So far, the organization has actively responded after the Pakistan Floods 2010, Balochistan Earthquake 2008 and in conflicted areas of Mardan, Swat, D.I. Khan and Bajour Agency.

Today, OAL is gradually adopting an integrated approach. This implies that instead of working in larger geographical spreads, OAL intervenes in smaller focused areas with an integrated model where community physical infrastructure, WATSAN and Education etc. are all provisioned together. This model has proved successful so far. In short, OAL is a dynamic organization which recognizes the practical constraints communities face while developing themselves and has a capacity to respond to the diverse needs of the communities. It also draws its strength from the through understanding of the culture and local context of communities in different areas of Pakistan. The organization does not believe in “One size fits all”. Innovation & Customizations are our keys to success. Our strength lies in our team’s collective experience and insight accumulated over years of working in development sector. Having a good understanding of the work dynamics, policy framework, management structures and practices of the development sector, we are well-positioned to take up diverse and challenging assignments.

Pakistan is located in a region that is prone to a number of natural disasters. Due to its diverse range of terrain, the country is susceptible to wide-ranging hazards from droughts to floods and earthquakes to cyclones. The country is home to the world’s largest refugee population from Afghanistan (over 3 million people). Geographically and demographically the country as a whole is exposed to Natural Disasters and Manmade Calamities, following are the types of disasters:

Seasonal / Flash floods

Droughts

Earthquakes

Sectarian violence

Terrorism

Internal conflicts

Epidemics

OAL Foundation has developed expertise in Disaster Response & Management and preparedness. The organization specializes in relief and rehabilitation operations. Coordination is given prime importance while responding to a disaster. Coordination here refers to coordination at two levels. Coordination among OAL’s sections (Emergency Response, Environment & Infrastructure and the Education section) which ensures optimal response and the coordination with the stakeholders (other organizations, donors and

Accessing the most vulnerable is the thumb rule for Own A Life Foundation. OAL mainstreams Protection in all of its interventions. The staff is regularly capacitated on Protection issues. The entire OAL staff signs a code of conduct for ensuring protection of beneficiaries, eliminating biases and ensuring impartiality.

The number of children becoming orphans has increased exponentially in Pakistan, mainly due to ongoing war on terror coupled with number of natural disasters taken place in the recent past. According to a UNICEF

estimate the number of orphan children in the country has reached a startling figure of 4.2 million. To deal with this huge humanitarian catastrophe, the country has no compatible program, facilities, or resources. OAL Foundation has taken up the challenge and is determined

to reach out and provide assistance to maximum number of orphan children, in “Own Orphan Homes” for their care.

In “Own Orphan Homes” The children are given basic life facilities including health and education against average monthly expenses of Rs. 4, 850 per month per child. In ‘Own Orphan Homes’ children are given quality education.

We feel this will help them obtain employment and assist them in gaining independent living and better quality of life. Your contribution by sponsoring / owning an orphan can give him a bright future and you in return an eternal contentment and divinable reward. Against your contribution, a complete bio data and credentials of your sponsored orphan is maintained at www.ownalife.com and will also be provided to you to maintain direct contact with the child.

The concept revolves around the core idea of 'Privileged Education for the Underprivileged'. OAL Foundation offers a hope to the children of the less privileged yet equally ambitious families to grow in socio-academically conducive and enabling environment. In OSS students are given two sets of free uniform and books and stationary on joining to support quality education compatible to any elite school in Pakistan.

End objective is "to enable them to emerge as positive agents of change in the family and the society at large“. We look forward for your support & encouragement to consolidate our humble initiative thus enabling us to undertake wider responsibilities in the future. Scholarships. The Program has been established to support academically outstanding students who without financial assistance would not be able to continue their studies, in the field of medicine, engineering and commerce amongst the top colleges in Pakistan. Eligible students must secure a minimum A grade in their Matriculation Exams.

Own A Life Foundation is also actively involved in the improvement rural Education institutions. The program aims at improving the status and standard of formal Education while significant interventions have been taken for non-formal Education also. OAL has established specific standards and guidelines for working in this sector the most important of which is that we recognize this program as value driven rather than incentive based.

The program addresses the Education related problems at four interlinked but distinguishable level:

Student (Applying modern learning techniques, access to information, reduction in corporal punishment)

The Community (Parents, Social Mobilization, Involvement)

Teachers (Strengthening, Capacity building)

Physical Infrastructure (Strengthening of WATSAN facilities in schools, provision of furniture etc.)

Whereas the interventions are designed under one or more of the above mentioned levels, OAL has recognized the importance of incorporating all of the above mentioned levels in an intervention. The organization is currently working with the support of following donors in the Education sector.

For quality delivery and sustainability OAL works on widely accepted standards such as the “UNICEF’s Education Supplies Standards” with little customizations to suit local & cultural needs. The standards are followed specially incase of classroom supplies, student supplies and recreational supplies etc. In addition to this OAL has identified most economical means for catering the supply based needs of schools for ensuring program success.

The main concept of ‘Own Dispensary’ program is to establish various small sized health centers across the country to provide free basic medical facilities to poor people.

OAL foundation under ‘Own Dispensary’ Program has opened a modern health centre in Lahore which is equipped with medical, dental and minor surgical support facilities.

The centre is administering an average 300 patients per day and has hired three professional doctors for the purpose.

OAL believes that Environment, Community Physical Infrastructure and Water are the main neglected areas of Pakistan which needs special attention. Thus the E&I program of OAL was launched in 2009. Being potentially need based, it is now the core program of OAL.

Provision of Community Physical Infrastructure, Drinking Water Supply Schemes, Water Management, and Sanitation schemes on sustainable basis in rural areas and urban suburbs of Balochistan is the prime objective of this program while environmental considerations are the corner stone of all interventions. Due importance is also paid on conservation of natural resources.

For implementation under the E&I program, OAL, over the years has developed and adopted culturally tailored and environmentally sensitive development models. Bottom-up development methods combined with comprehensive Community Mobilization strategies, the organization has been able to produce good results.

If it’s said that communities are central to each intervention or communities are at the core of every intervention or communities are the most important stakeholders of an intervention, its all one and the same for OAL. Community Participation is ensured at all levels of an intervention.

When OAL intervenes in an area, development work is initiated after formation of Community Organizations (COs). A CO is formed at community level. It is a democratic organization of individuals (men and women) of an area. It passes a resolution for initialization of development scheme.

The CO collects its share from the CO members which is used as a CO share in a development scheme. The share is also used for maintenance of provisioned schemes. Thus from beginning to finalization of a scheme, the CO leads in all phases. OAL’s role is then to provide technical guidance and assisting communities in overall management. This ensures transparency and that the targeted beneficiaries own and sustain the provisioned development scheme.

Most poverty stricken communities in

Pakistan have limited access to safe

drinking water, resulting in various water-

borne illnesses. Thus ,OWN-A-LIFE

foundation has been actively involved in

providing access to safe water across the

country to poor communities.

In June 2011, OWN-A-LIFE foundation

began its safe drinking water campaign in

the slum areas of RAWALPINDI. The

project included the distribution of a

water-purifying agent known as PuR. This

water-purifying agent comes in a sachet,

and when mixed with dirty water, removes

99% of germs and bacteria, leaving the

previously dirty water now drinkable.

From June 1 to July 30, OWN-A-LIFE

foundation distributed 1.2 million sachets of

PuR.

Demonstrations were also held to show

the community members how to use PuR and

emphasize the importance of safe and clean

drinking water. Buckets, coolers and spoons

were also distributed to the families.

In 2010, when floods struck the country,

millions of people were left homeless.

OAL foundation has made efforts to provide clean water

Under Community Mobilization Program, it has been perpetual endeavour

of Own A Life Foundation to bring awareness among the masses to develop

habits of living in clean and healthy environments. Apropos, since 2009, we

To keep up with the ever emerging development challenges, we have established an exercise to discuss, review, orient and redirect our strategic vision on annual basis. During this exercise (usually held towards the end of an year), OAL establishes short and long term strategies for realization of its Vision. Following is an overview of OAL’s Future Strategies:

Shifting towards an integrated approach. (OAL intends that instead of thinly spreading geographically, the organization will focus on deprived areas (ideally union councils as units) and will deliver with an integrated approach whereas Community Mobilization, WATSAN, CPI, Education and Health etc. will be delivered in a specific area to increase sustainability and for brining visible positive change)

OAL also intends to initiate a Basic Health & Education Program. (The program is a requirement for OAL’s integrated approach also)

Strengthening of Disaster Response by strengthening the communities for disaster preparedness and mitigation.

OAL has two offices through which all of its programs are managed. Its head office is based at Lahore. Following is a detail of our offices:
