ICMP is regarded as part of the network layer. ICMP packets transmit error, controlpackets, and query results. They are used by protocols at network layer or higher layers,

such as TCP or UDP. Ping operates by sending ICMP echo request packets to the target host and waiting for an

ICMP reply packet. If an echo reply packet is sent back to the source host within thespecified time period after the echo request packets reach the target host, the target hostis reachable. If the source host fails to receive an echo reply packet within the specifiedtime period, a timeout is displayed at the transmit end.

Ping sets the identifier in an ICMP packet to the procedures that sends the ICMP packet.This helps to identify at the peer end different ping cases that run at the local end.

Sequence Number is incremented by 1 when Ping sends an ICMP echo request packet. Thenumber of echo request packets sent varies with different types of device.

Advantages of UDP Ping

The ICMP packets might be recognized as attack packets by the router and be

discarded. But the bearer networks consider that the UDP packets and servicepackets are same, the UDP packets will not be recognized as attack packets bymistake.

Though the ICMP packets use the same priorities with the service packets, itsforward path is different from the service packets’. The UDP packets can simulatethe service path better.

For ICMP Ping, the NodeB’s flow control will result in failure of the PATHdetection; The UDP Ping packets are processed on the forward plane, and it willreduce the failure caused by the NodeB’s flow control.

The UDP Ping:

The UDP Ping is used for the connectivity check of the user plane on the Iub

interface.

Add the parameter of “IP path check type” during the configuration of IPPATH. 

IP path check type: UDP, IP path check flag: ENABLED(Enabled).

The statistics and other parameters are the same with the ICMP detection.

The UDP Ping is recommended for the Iub interface of the new office.

The realization of this feature needs the RNC and NodeB to cooperate. When both theRNC and NodeB are RAN13 version, the UDP Ping can be used, if not, use ICMP Ping.

The ICMP Ping is used for the Iu-CS/Iu-PS/Iur interface with the first priority.

TTL is short for time to live. The TTL field in an IP header specifies the time period whenthe data packets live and the maximum number of routers to traverse. TTL is configured

on the source device that sends data packets. Its value decreases by 1 when the datapackets traverse a router. When the TTL value decreases to 0, the data packets arediscarded, and an ICMP timeout packet is sent to the source device as a notification.Under normal circumstances, the TTL value is set to the number of routers to traverse.

The source IP address must be the local IP address of the PPP link of thePEUa/POUa/UOIa(IP)/POUc board, the local IP address of the MP group of thePEUa/POUa/POUc board, the IP address of the Ethernet port of theFG2a/GOUa/FG2c/GOUc board, the IP address of the Trunk group of theFG2a/GOUa/FG2c/GOUc board, the local IP address of the IPoA PVC of theAOUa/AOUc/AEUa/UOIa (ATM)/UOIc (ATM), or the device IP address of the board.

After running this command, do not run it again until the result is returned. This command is unavailable on the standby port.

To stop the running of the PING IP command, press Ctrl+Q.

As part of the network layer, ICMP packets transmit error, control packets, and queryresults. They are used by protocols at network layer or higher layers, such as TCP and UDP.

The TTL field in an IP header specifies the time period when the data packets live and themaximum number of routers to traverse. TTL is configured on the source device that sendsdata packets. Its value decreases by 1 when the data packets traverse a router. When thevalue decreases to 0, the data packets are discarded, and an ICMP timeout packet is sentto the source device as a notification. Under normal circumstances, the TTL value is set tothe number of routers to traverse.

First, the source host sends to the target host three UDP data packets whose TTL value is 1,a port whose ID is greater than 32768 is randomly used as the port for receiving the datapackets at the receive end. When the data packets reach a router, a timeout occurs, andthe source host receives an ICMP timeout packet from the router. Then, the source host

sends again three UDP data packets whose TTL value is 2, and receives an ICMP timeoutpacket from the second router that the data packets traverse. This continues until thetarget host receives the packets.

The packets that the source device sends contain the destination port ID. If the port is notused on the target device when the ICMP packets are received, the target device sendsICMP port unreachable information back to the source device, indicating that the targetdevice is unreachable and the Tracert operations are performed. The route is also shown inthe results displayed on the source device.

The maximum value of TTL in a data packet is 30. If no response packet is received by thesource host within the time specified, timeout information is displayed on the source

device. If timeout information is still displayed when the TTL value is 30, the packetscannot reach the target host, and the test fails.

If the IP address at the local end of an IP route equals the source IP address of Trace Route,the IP address at the peer end of the IP route equals the destination IP address of Trace

Route, and ping detection is enabled, the Trace Route results are inaccurate. This situationis normal.

If the source IP address is not specified, the system selects the most appropriate interfaceIP address based on PHB and uses the IP address as the source IP address. Ensure thatroutes to the source IP address are configured for intermediary and destination devices.

Standby port doesn't support the command.

This feature is realized in RAN13 version.

The Outer Intercept Length or Inner Intercept Length parameter specifies the length

of each Ethernet frame (especially the long packet) to be captured. Only the packet of thelength specified by the parameter is intercepted and the part exceeding the specifiedlength is not reported. If the actually captured packet is shorter than the specified length,the length of the actual packet is used.

Packet capturing is used to obtain and analyze external packets.
