BOOK (PASSAGE) REPORT

A book report simply summarizes the book's contents, with

personal evaluation by the reviewer kept to a minimum. For

example, a book report on a biography of Indonesian

President John F. Kennedy would review the key events in his

life as addressed in the biography. The report presents thesefacts clearly enough so that someone who has not read the

book will have a good idea of what is covered.

Things to include:

1. What is the book about? What is the main subject or focus of

the book?2. Why was the book written? Does it succeed in explaining,

proving, or disproving what it set out to explain, prove, or

disprove?

3. What is the style of the book? Is it easy to read?

4. What are the highlights of the book?

BOOK (PASSAGE) REVIEW

A book review is more substantial than a book report, because

the writer usually argues for a thesis, e.g., that the book's authorhas an excellent understanding of the hip-hop music scene, but misunderstands the relationship of hip-hop to music history ingeneral.

A book review also requires to examine the author's arguments. In short, you judge the quality of the book.

1. What is the purpose of the book? Is the author trying toentertain, persuade, or inform the audience?

2. Are the author's statements based on facts, opinions, or experiences?

3. Has the author presented information objectively? Are other opinions fairly or equally considered?

4. How well-written is the book? Are the examples clear, and is thetext easy to understand?

5. Finally, the most important questions: Would you recommendthis book? Why or why not?
