Server roles allow an administrator to split the functions of anExchange server and place each role, or a combination of
roles, on different servers in the organization. This can be done for performance reasons, managementreasons, or any other reason necessary by the organization'spolicies. With current Exchange servers you can make a server aFront-End server or a Back-End server.
Exchange 2007 introduces five roles to the Exchangeorganization.
MailboxClient Access (CAS)Hub TransportUnified MessagingEdge Transport (Gateway)

The Hub Transport role is responsible for allinternal mail flow.Inbound mail is accepted from the Internet orEdge Transport and passed on to the user'smailbox and all outbound mail is relayed fromthe Hub Transport to the Internet or Edge
Transport and out to the Internet. The Anti-Spam and Anti-virus features can beconfigured on the Hub Transport in order toreduce the number of servers required.

Edge Transport server role is deployed as a stand-aloneserver or as a member server of a perimeter-basedActive Directory domain.Designed to minimize the attacks , the Edge Transportserver handles all Internet-facing mail flow, whichprovides Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) relay andsmart host services for the Exchange organization.Additional layers of message protection and securityare provided by a series of agents that run on the Edge
Transport server and act on messages as they areprocessed by the message transport components.
These agents support the features that provideprotection against viruses and spam and applytransport rules to control message flow.
