Five Leadership areasThe FBLA-Middle Level High 5 Program takes you on a leadership journey through activities and exploration in fi ve Leadership Areas. You’ll practice skills and gain experience essential to successful business leadership.

Five Leadership activitiesEach of the fi ve Leadership Areas asks you to complete fi ve Leadership Activities. The fi nal activity is a more rigorous leadership challenge designed to test the skills and experience you’ve mastered in a leadership area.

As you complete each leadership activity, you’ll develop a variety of skills and talents essential to great leaders. You’ll work alone and in teams, and communicate through speech, writing, presentations, and projects. You’ll network and meet new people, serve and contribute, create and conduct research. You’ll plan and prepare, use technology and experience innovation. And after each activity, you will have grown as a leader worthy of many high fi ves!

Use the “Active!” box to record when you start and complete each Leadership Activity. Advisers should approve each activity you successfully complete and help identify which challenge to take on next. This is your chance to lead yourself to the great opportunities that await you as a Future Business Leader of America!

RecognitionAfter you complete each area, you’ll qualify for a certifi cate of recognition from your adviser.

Leadership activity #1: activateBecome a dues-paid member of FBLA-Middle Level by March 1. Attend at least two chapter meetings. Recruit three people to chapter activities.

Leadership activity #2: Smart phonePretend you are designing a smartphone mobile app. The app is based on YOU and what you bring to your FBLA chapter. Design a mock-up of your app, including the following information: App Name, App Logo, three traits about your leadership style, two of your leadership skills, one dream for your future career, and a tag line. You may design your app on card stock, construction paper, or a computer. You’re an original so make sure your app refl ects original work!

Leadership activity #3: Everybody inWork in a team to recruit and motivate participation in FBLA. Create a poster, fl yer, brochure, bulletin board, video, media presentation, or radio or TV announcement promoting FBLA to fellow students. Work with your adviser to upload your presentation to YouTube or SlideShare so others can be inspired by your creativity!

Leadership activity #4: Basic TrainingKnow the FBLA basics. Recite the FBLA Pledge at each meeting, and in a group, conduct one of the FBLA ceremonies.

Leadership activity #5: FBLa Online -The FBLa chapter Leadership challengeVisit fbla-pbl.org to select one of the many FBLA programs, partnerships, conferences, or competitive events that interest you. Research this program on the FBLA website and write a three-paragraph essay sharing what this program is, why you are interested in it, and what you need to do to start participating in the program. Leadership activity #1: Sparkle and ShineChoose a target market (a particular group of people you’re trying to reach: i.e. athletes, parents, students, males, females), to deliver a presentation about the positive benefi ts of FBLA-Middle Level at your school.

Leadership activity #2: School interviewWith a partner, interview a school employee (teacher, faculty, administrator, support staff, volunteer, etc.) and write a three-paragraph article about them. Include their picture and be creative with your questions. Here are some samples to get you started: “What is your education background?”, “What do you do in your job?”, “What’s the best part of your work?”, “Where else have you worked?”, “What are your goals?”, “What’s one piece of advice you have for students who want to be successful?”

Leadership activity #3: FBLa impactWork in a team to create and deliver a presentation to school leaders about the positive benefi ts of FBLA-Middle Level (presentation may include PowerPoint, Prezi, video, report, brochure, etc.). Work with your adviser to upload the presentation.

Leadership activity #4: School volunteerVolunteer to support another school project, performance, activity, or teacher for fi ve hours. Remember to get approval from your adviser for the activity you have selected.

Leadership activity #5: We’ve Got Spirit -The School Leadership challengeWork in a team to complete a technology based activity that contributes to the positive spirit, climate, and environment of your school. Be creative! Here are some samples to get you started: design a series of inspirational school announcements, create a video highlighting a cool aspect of your school, create a catalog explaining opportunities at your school, create a brochure highlighting features of your school, provide audio-visual services for a school recognition event, or design logos for your school departments.

Leadership activity #1: Business Know-howResearch a local business and identify its mission and the year it was founded. Describe its target market (the specifi c group of people it’s trying to reach), and identify at least two competitors. Determine the number of employees, describe the services/products it offers, estimate the cost of at least one product/service versus the sales price. Finally, obtain a quote about business success from someone who works there. Use technology to present your fi ndings during an FBLA meeting or in class.

Leadership activity #2: Great place for BusinessIn a team, design a promotional poster answering, “Why is your town a great place for business?” You may use technology, poster board, etc. Upload your poster to social media (consult with your adviser on the most ideal media: Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Google+, etc.).

Leadership activity #3: Top LeadersDevelop your own Top 3 list of business leaders you admire from the worlds of business, athletics, entertainment, or politics. Use technology, share key highlights of their careers, contributions, stories, and why you admire them. Continued on next page...

Leadership activity #4: Let’s Do This ThingWork in a team to develop a fi ctional product or service. Create/draw a mockup of the product/service and develop a project budget. Identify a price for the product and determine how many items need to be sold to break even and become profi table. Identify the specifi c target market for this product/service.

Leadership activity #5: Winner’s circleThe Business Leadership challengeCompete in an FBLA-Middle Level Competitive Event. Participating in competition at your school, at a regional/state event, at the FBLA National Leadership Conference, or through the FBLA Online Tournament qualifi es. Provide a one page essay on your experience outlining your preparation, what you learned, and at least three skill areas (i.e. math, typing, public speaking) you will work to develop in the future. Work with your adviser to upload your essay.

Leadership activity #1: Service TimeSupport a community service effort/project of your choice that requires a minimum of fi ve service hours. Remember to get approval from your adviser for your selected activity.

Leadership activity #2: FBLa LetterWrite a letter (using proper business format) to a community leader or your local newspaper about FBLA, its benefi ts, and how it positively impacts the community. Your adviser should approve the letter before you send it.

Leadership activity #3: community promoWork in a team to create a video that promotes a great aspect of your community and highlight fi ve reasons others should experience it (consult with your adviser on the most ideal media to use to share your video like Vimeo, YouTube, SchoolTube, etc.).

Leadership activity #4: Meeting UpAttend a civic, business, service, or government meeting and present a 60-second report during class or at an FBLA meeting about your experience. Examples of meetings include, but are not limited to city council, Chamber of Commerce, booster club, Rotary, PTA/PTSA, C-SPAN, etc.

Leadership activity #5: Make your MarkThe community Leadership challengeWork in a team to select a local landmark that is named after someone. Examples include a bridge, street, building, airport, stadium, shopping center, hospital, etc. Prepare a presentation, using visuals, about this landmark that describes how it got its name and at least one contribution the landmark or its namesake made to your community (consult with your adviser on the most ideal media to use like Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Google+, etc.).

Leadership activity #1: character hiredIn a team, choose a movie, video game, or TV show you all like (and that your parents approve!). Have each team member choose a character. Create a group presentation highlighting each character and at least three strengths and one weakness they each possess. As a group, pretend you are employers or starting a business. Identify which character you would want to hire to be on your team, and explain why at a chapter meeting.

Leadership activity #2: Game OnIn a team, create a game designed for elementary students to have fun learning about the world of business, careers, and leadership. Be creative! Some examples include a board game, card game, slogan identifi cation using clips from videos, scavenger hunt, word puzzles, etc. Give the game a name, design a logo, create instructions, and design the materials needed to play. Lead a group in playing the game at least one time.

Leadership activity #3: Tweet ThatSelect a book, magazine, blog, or video on leadership, careers, education, or an aspect of business. Create fi ve 140 character messages (the length of a Tweet) that highlight or summarize key points you fi nd valuable.

Leadership activity #4: career interviewInterview a person that works in business or industry (can be parents, family, FBLA professional members/alumni, etc.). Ask them about the top fi ve skills, attitudes, and expectations they have of employees or coworkers. Provide a brief biography of who you interviewed and a summary of what you learned.

Leadership activity #5: Reverse career DayThe career Leadership challengePick a dream job and prepare a presentation that uses technology (i.e. PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, etc.) and outlines the job position, skills required to advance in this position, and the educational requirements needed to accomplish this dream job. Determine the cost of required education, and the estimated salary of someone in this position.
